Side stories related to the series:

Contains the following tropes:

  • 10-Minute Retirement: In the wake of his defeat of Spencer towards the end of Season 1, Thomas, falling into a Heroic BSoD, vows never to duel again, saying he is afraid of how he was willing to win the duel even if Spencer was killed as a result. He snaps out of it by the end of the following chapter, but doesn't truly recover until his duel with Lady.
  • 20 Minutes into the Past: Seasons 1-4, Pyramid of Light, Night of the Living Slime, Santa Claws is Coming!, David Xadashi, and Lisa Drake (except the final two chapters) take place in 2009, even though they were released throughout 2016-2020. Seasons 5-6, Journey to Redemption, The Champion's Challenge, Red Rocket & Yellow Streak, and TRANSCEND GAME take place in 2010, despite released throughout 2019-2023. Legend of the Six Dragons takes place in 2012, despite being released in 2021-2024.
  • 11th-Hour Superpower: During the final turn of the duel with Diablon, Thomas Unity summons "Holactie the Creator of Light" herself to end it by fusing the "Three Egyptian Gods. He does it once again on Season 6 during the final battle with Zorc Necrophades, allowing him to win the Shadow RPG.
  • A Birthday, Not a Break:
    • Emily spends her sixteenth birthday with friends and family, but as she goes upstairs to try on a new shirt, Witty Phantom and his goons attack her. Thomas defeats Witty Phantom and kills him with "Obelisk the Terminator," and this causes Diablon's seal in his heart to be broken while Witty Phantom's goons drag Emily into the Duel Monsters Spirit World where she is imprisoned by the Court of Darkness.
    • In a deleted scene, Thomas feared going through this on his birthday. But in the end, he is happy to realize that he had been worrying for nothing, and seems to have opened up better when it comes to celebrations.
  • A-Cup Angst:
    • Diote, who is not completely flat chested, was quite jealous of Anastasia for having a large bust, using it as a means to slut shame her... although she was also attracted to Anastasia because of how well endowed she was, even claiming during the final duel that she enjoyed feeling the princess' breasts and wishes she and her to be together for always and always. However, it's hard to say how sincere Diote's angst really was, considering she's, well, Diote.
    • In Ride 33 of ''Yu-Gi-Oh! 6D's: Legend of the Six Dragons," Asagi and Mayura playfully tease and accuse Carlie of being this when they see her wearing a black undershirt with the new outfit she tries on at the mall to hide any cleavage the corset might have accentuated, claiming she's jealous of busty women like Sherry and Misty, something Carlie denies.
  • A Father to His Men:
    • Nathaniel to his monsters. He absolutely hates it when one of them is sent to the GY. In his rematch with Thomas, he surrenders by sacrificing all his LP to revive all his monsters from the GY.
    • As Pharaoh, Atem is younger than most of his troops, but is fiercely protective of them and his people. At one point, he heads into a potentially lethal situation with little firepower because his would've been killed by Montague otherwise.
  • A Man Is Always Eager: As most men in this universe want sex, Prince Randolph makes this painfully clear to Anastasia (just because they were arranged to be married) regardless of whether Anakin is present or not.
  • A Pirate 400 Years Too Late: Sailor John and his crew are "pirates" in the 21st century, and as such, no one believes they exist because the pirate heyday has long since passed, at least until they start publicly attacking.
  • Absurdly High-Stakes Game: Shadow Games plus Duel Monsters means the world is frequently at stake. also, Season 3 has the characters dying if they lose a duel at certain points, which becomes every single duel towards the end of the arc.
  • Abusive Parent: Gozaburo Gresley, Marik and Ishizu's father, and Frieda and Phillip's father (although not as much in the latter's case.)
  • Accents Aren't Hereditary: Frieda has a notable German accent, but her brother Phillip does not.
  • Accidental Murder: The side effects of Summoning the Pyramid of Light is to have both duelists life energy drained to feed Anubis whenever they lose LP. Spencer isn't aware of this (basically dismissing in it) but Thomas is. In fact, Spencer comes within 200 LP of killing Thomas without realizing it.
  • Accidental Pervert: In Ride 10 of Legend of the Six Dragons, during an infiltration of the NYPD's main headquarters, David accidentally slips on a small puddle on the floor while he, Lisa, Carlie, and Zack are avoiding security beams, causing him to crash into Lisa and fall onto the floor, thus triggering the alarm. While getting up, he thinks he placed his hands on the floor, but after hearing an angry yell from Lisa, he realizes he was groping her breasts. Lisa is not amused...at all.
  • Achilles' Heel: Some cards have deliberate weaknesses to keep things interesting and keep them from becoming too powerful.
    • Five-Headed Dragon is impervious to al elemental attacks (Fire, Water, Wind, Earth, and Dark) and hits hard, but a strong enough Light attack will finish it.
    • Discord's Deck relies on the Toon World Spell Card, which is necessary for his Toons to do what they have to do, but the fact they die when Toon World is destroyed makes it seem like like a big bullseye on your side of the field. The same can be said for the Spell Card, Cosmic Hand, which returns the stolen Monster if Toon World/Toon Kingdom is removed from the field. However, in some cases like Toon Dark Magician, they will stick around despite their star card being nuked into oblivion.
    • P.T. Boomer's Captain Lock prevents monsters from being set or Summoned from the hand. So if "Polymerization" or Special Summon from the Deck is used against him, it's useless as James found out.
    • The Earthbound Immortals are all very strong, unable to be attacked, and can attack the opponent directly. But they can destroy themselves if there's no Field Spell Card on the field. Also, there can only be one Earthbound Immortal on the field.
  • Acid Reflux Nightmare: Discord's first explanation for his prophetic dream in Pyramid of Light is too many white wine spritzers before bed.
  • Action Bomb: Several cards have powerful effects that can destroy monsters on the opposing side of the field, but require the cared itself to be Tributed or destroyed as well.
  • Adaptation Amalgamation: The story takes many elements from the first six Yu-Gi-Oh! series (Duel Monsters, GX, 5D's, ZEXEL, ARC-V and VRAINS) referring to the many mangas and animes, and blending them together, ranging from characters to plot points.
  • Adaptational Jerkass: Hong-Mei from Seasons 22-23 didn't show much character, but is quite loony, rude, and vengeful in this series - along with having a huge crush on Thomas. When she cameos in one of the final chapters of Season 6 and returns in Journey to Redemption, she significantly mellows out.
  • Adaptational Personality Change: Overlaps with Adaptational Nice Guy; while Shinji from ARC-V has an intense hatred of the Tops and is a bit of a Hypocrite and Sore Loser, here he is a much nicer and graciously accepts a Turbo Duel defeat at the hands of Mayura Labatt. That said, he does show a more aggressive and serious side when dealing with threats towards his friends however.
  • Adaptational Sexuality:
    • In this series, Nia and Rebecca are portrayed in a lesbian relationship/
  • Adaptational Villainy:
    • Sailor John, while not exactly pleasant in Sodor's Legend of the Lost Treasure, note  is much more sinister as such here: he secretly ruined the life of Commander (formerly Professor) Laura to get her to turn on her peers and join his pirate crew, manipulating Skiff much more than he did in canon, and organizing kidnappings and multiple assassination attempts on Thomas and his friends.
    • Diesel 10, being based more on his character from Thomas and the Magic Railroad than Day of the Diesels (and some added help from Marik Ishtar), he attempts to manipulate Rosie into befriending the Smelters Class and helping them take over Sodor High School, (so he could be principal), and even summons a gang he rules when things don't go in his favor. In addition, Diesel 10 also wants to kill Thomas for revenge, and even kidnaps Annie and Clarabel to ensure Thomas obeys his demands for a duel. He later sells his soul to Driote all out of his aforementioned hatred of Thomas.
    • Gozaburo (Kaiba) Gresley was already shown to be cruel, abusive, and all-around nasty in both Yu-Gi-Oh! and its Duel Monsters adaptation, ends up even worse here: after finding himself in the Duel Monsters Spirit World after jumping out of the window of the highest floor of Boxford Corp (which should've killed him), he meets the Court of Darkness and willingly agrees to help them revive Diablon. He becomes more and more unhinged as the arc goes on...
    • Frankie may have been...somewhat sympathetic in Journey Beyond Sodor, but here, thanks to being taken over and influenced by he previous incarnation at one point, she is one of the evilest and most Ax-Crazy villains Thomas ever goers against.
  • Aerial Canyon Chase: Emily and Knight of Dark Dragon both do this when the latter is hunting down the former in Chapter 188, with both riding their respective dragons: Seiyaryu (Emily) and Red-Eyes Black Dragon (Knight of dark Dragon). As they approach a dead end, Emily forges a path through the cliff with Seiyaryu's attack, one that is much too narrow for Red-Eyes, thus forcing her pursuer to pullup and attempt an ambush on her, only for Emily to ambush him instead.
  • Aesop Amnesia: After the battle with Anubis, Thomas starts acting like he did in Season 4. Needless to say, this causes friction between him and Emily when they enter the "The Couples cup."
  • Affably Evil: As a Dark Signer, despite being very angry and vengeful towards her over the death of her younger brother, Misty is still very polite towards Carlie, sometimes referring to her as "Ms. Carlie" (or "Carlie-san" in the Japanese version) and always (Japanese version only) using the Japanese pronoun "Anata" towards her. In contrast, Misty angrily uses "Omae" towards Azrael once she finally learns the truth about how it was him who killed her younger brother.
  • Affectionate Nickname:
    • Emily, as of Season 2, tends to call Thomas 'Tommy'.
    • Stanley and Rosie sometimes call each other 'Stan' and 'Rose' respectively.
    • Nia often refers to Rebecca as her 'cuddly cinnamon roll'.
    • Anastasia tends to call Anakin 'Ani', much to his embarrassment due to it sounding like a girl's name.
    • Lexi sometimes refers to Theo as her little 'Cinnamon Roll'.
    • James and Molly share cute nicknames for each other, too; James's being 'Splendid Ruby', and Molly's being 'Beaming Sunshine'.
    • Gabriella always refers to David as お兄ちゃん (O nīchan), the Japanese term that translates to "Big Brother", though is treated more as an affectionate nickname than a traditional term.
    • On the final day before departing America, Gabriella calls Lisa お姉ちゃん (O nēchan), which initially confused her due to it sounding so much like David's nickname, only for him to tell her the different pronunciation translates to "Big Sister".
  • After-Action Patch-Up:
    • In Chapter 167, Rosie tends to Stanley's injuries after he was brutally defeated by Gladiator Beast Spartacus.
    • In Chapter 194, Anastasia tends to Anakin's newly acquired scars following his fight with Prince Randolph, which soon leads to Anakin and Anastasia making love for the first time.
    • In Ride 44, Lisa patches up David's injuries, after which he returns the favor.
  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: Dark Marik starts begging for mercy after Marik regains control over his body.
  • Airborne Aircraft Carrier: "Dark Flattop". Fittingly, it allows you to Special Summon one "Reactor" monster from your GY, ignoring Summoning conditions, and if it's destroyed, you can Special Summon one Level 5 or lower Machine monster.
  • Akashic Records: Diablon uses a Spell Card called "Akashic Record". It allows the user to draw two new cards, which is always a worthwhile gain. However, the concept of going beyond the known to include the unknown means that if either drawn card has been used at any point in the duel, they're both banished.
  • Alas, Poor Villain:
    • Despite his crimes against them, Thomas, Discord, and everyone else feel sorry for Sailor John after finding him murdered at the end of the arc.
    • After being defeated in their only appearance in Season 3, the Harpie Lady Sisters bemoan that all they ever wanted was to be loved. The group, especially Thomas, feels sorry for them, with Thomas acknowledging that the three Harpie Ladies weren't evil—just misguided.
  • Albinos Are Freaks: Kisara's white hair and pale skin made the Egyptians shun her.
  • Alien Animals: The "Neo-Spacians" are clearly based on real-life creatures.
  • All Girls Want Bad Boys: Part of the reason why Anastasia eventually fell in-love with Anakin. While he was a very handsome, moody and strong man with a dark edge because of his position as Rondeval's most skilled warrior, Anakin's softer side as well as his good and selfless, if also troubled, heart was what attracted Anastasia to him most of all, as she knew the true Anakin and the personal, inner demons he struggled with better than anyone, as her and Anakin always confided in each other about their most personal feelings and issues.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: Kisara's white hair and pale skin made the Egyptians shun her.
