You Don't Take Shit From Any Demons! (or Angels)

You Don't Take Shit From Any Demons! (or Angels) is a Hazbin Hotel/Helluva Boss Crossover Fan Fic by RoyalGlasses.

Charlie Morningstar, in a moment of frustration and panic, strikes a deal with Adam. If she can prove to Adam that her plan for redeeming sinners is possible, then Adam would have no choice but to stop the yearly Exterminations and support her plan. If she fails, then Adam will continue leading the Angel Army and she'll be forced to give up her dream.

This fanfic provides examples of:

  • Adaptational Intelligence: Downplayed; while Adam is still far from being a genius to his canon counterpart, he's much more capable of rational thought and weighing the potential long-term consequences of his actions. A good example is his acceptance of Charlie's plan to rehabilitate and redeem Sinners in the first chapter (though on his terms of course), explaining to Lute that while he has no real faith in it, the Princess of Hell would only become a bigger problem in the long term if he outright rejected her plans. As one commenter in the first chapter puts it in DnD terms:
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: Downplayed with Adam; he's still a misogynist and Holier Than Thou asshole who revels in slaughtering Sinners indiscriminately from canon, but he's capable of showing plenty of Pet the Dog moments in comparison.
  • Adaptation Name Change: In the fic, Vaggie's original name is changed to Vagatha.
  • All Girls Want Bad Boys: Like in canon, Niffty prefers "bad boys" and that includes Adam. In the first chapter alone, Niffty gets really turned on by Adam casually dropping his suitcase on her (which is heavy enough to crack the floor) and threatening to "squish her like a bug" if she touches his stuff.
  • Better the Devil You Know: As Vaggie tells Adam straight to his face, she considers Alastor more trustworthy than him.
  • Bodyguarding a Badass:
    • I.M.P. serves as hired escorts for Charlie during their trip to the human world to make sure things go smoothly and hopefully not run into D.H.O.R.K.S. again.
    • Vaggie's wants to be this with her girlfriend Charlie. Adam discusses and deconstructs this dynamic as, despite Vaggie being a powerful former Exorcist, Charlie is much stronger in terms of power, being the Princess of Hell and all that. If there's a threat Vaggie can deal with, why can't Charlie just take care of it herself?
  • Broken Pedestal: In the past, Vaggie looked up to Adam after being comforted by him when she first ascended to Heaven, which led to her becoming an Exorcist. After being punished by Lute for sparing a Sinner child, she loses whatever warm feelings for the First Man as he leaves her for dead.
  • Commonality Connection: Charlie emotionally connects with both Moxxie and Blitzø for having a not-so-ideal relationship with their respective fathers.
Blitzø: Welcome to the Shitty Dad’s Club: where everyone needs therapy and the milk our fathers were supposed to get us. Members are given shades for their admission.
  • Dope Slap: After hitting her Rage Breaking Point with Adam in chapter 5, Vaggie angrily slaps him in the face. Though Adam easily NoSells the slap due to being far more powerful than her.
  • Did You Actually Believe...?: Similar to the canon show, Adam asked Vaggie if she really believed that he wouldn't recognize a former top Exorcist under his command just because she's out of uniform.
  • Due to the Dead: After recovering the body of the dead female Exorcist, both Adam and Lute intended to bring her back to Heaven to give a proper burial.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: While Adam is a Politically Incorrect Villain regarding Sinners as Beyond Redemption and sees them deserving of being slaughtered, he's not homophobic as shown by his rejection of Angel Dust's flirtations being that of annoyance rather than revulsion and sincerely (albeit in his own jerkass way) congratulating Vaggie of her relationship with Charlie as much as he finds it "hot as fuck".
    • He is also completely disgusted with Valentino's treatment of Angel Dust and even gets Val to free Angel Dust from his contract under threat of death. When Angel Dust asks why Adam helped him out, Adam very begrudgingly admits it felt like the right thing to do.
  • Grew a Spine: As seen in the title of the fic, Charlie learns to stand up for herself and what her Hazbin Hotel stands for in redeeming Sinners.
  • Hate at First Sight: Upon meeting Alastor for the first time, Adam quickly comes to antagonize the Radio Demon.
  • Heroic BSoD: After getting verbally demolished by Adam's harsh, but accurate criticism of her Missing Steps Plan, Charlie ran out of the Hazbin Hotel in tears before sitting on a bench somewhere to stool in her own emotional pain and humiliation.
  • Hero of Another Story: Justified with I.M.P. as their adventures and services run contrary to Charlie and the Hazbin Hotel's purpose of rehabilitating and redeeming Sinners.
  • Hypocrite Has a Point: While Adam is the last person to call Charlie an "ignorant and naive child" given his own childish, macho, and rather Ax-Crazy personality, he's still painfully accurate of Charlie having little idea on how to truly rehabilitate and redeem Sinners due to her sheltered upbringing, never mind solving the overpopulation crisis in Hell by using the Hazbin Hotel to replace the yearly Exterminations. Also, the hypocrite part is downplayed as Adam, despite his current personality, is still a Long-Lived human-turned-angel with the experience and wisdom that comes with it.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Invoked by Adam on Vaggie after learning his former Exorcist is keeping her girlfriend Charlie in the dark about her Fallen Angel status. He finds it hilarious that someone trying to help build "trust", Vaggie sure is bad at trusting others.
  • Ironic Echo: Invoked. After breaking herself back into the meeting room, Charlie throws Adam's claim of "never made a mistake in his life" right back at him if he were to disagree with what she had planned for the Hazbin Hotel.
Charlie: (to Adam) You said it yourself, ‘I’ve never made a mistake in my life.’ Well, I know that you’d be making a huge mistake to ignore my plan.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: While Adam is far from being a benevolent father figure of humanity, he often makes some painfully accurate points throughout the fic.
    • When being called out by Vaggie for leaving her for dead and being complicit in Lute injuring her in chapter 3, Adam justifiably defends himself by stating that 1) he wasn't there until the end of what Lute did to her, and 2) she was disobeying direct orders by sparing a Sinner.
    • By chapter 5, he pulls no punches with this trope:
      • When Charlie hits her Rage Breaking Point regarding Adam's cynic behavior at the Hazbin Hotel and the redemption of Sinners, the latter hits his own breaking point and easily retorts and fires back with the obvious flaws of her Missing Steps Plan.
Adam: Only two out of the thousands of filthy sinners roaming around in Hell have chosen to not revel in sin; even when knowing that the Exterminations are coming half a year early, and when they are given an opportunity to change at your stupid hotel they don’t take it. And I would just like to point out that coming down to this shitty place was to see the so-called ‘proof’ that your plan would be able to replace the yearly Exterminations. Speaking of which, I don’t know how you thought this idea would replace the Exterminations due to the simple fact that you would need to be rehabilitating around one thousand sinners a year to keep Hell from being considered overpopulated. If you’re already struggling just dealing with just handling a handful of losers to rehabilitate, then I don’t know how you expect Heaven would want to back up a plan made by an ignorant and naive child.
Charlie: Well, if you know so much, what do you think it takes to get into Heaven?
Adam: What makes you think I know dick about that? It’s my job to kill sinners, not judge whether or not they get into Heaven. Human souls aren’t meant to cast judgment in the first place. Maybe if you opened a book every once in a while you wouldn’t be this ignorant!
      • When Charlie continues the argument to defend her beliefs of redeeming Sinners instead of genocide by claiming that they're "innocent", Adam quickly tears into her ignorance by stating that nobody that was sent to Hell is innocent and points out the sins committed by every member of the Hazbin Hotel in life. Even Husk admits later on that Adam has a point.
Charlie: At least what I suggest is better than just committing a genocide every year! These sinners are innocent human souls! Just because someone is dead doesn’t mean they can’t change their ways!
Adam: Innocent? Innocent?! Are you that fuckin’ blind as well as dumb, bitch?! I know you were born in fire and brimstone but you cannot be this fucking stupid and ignorant to your own fuckin’ people! Nobody sent to Hell is ever innocent! Spider-Legs was in the fuckin’ mafia, Sir Nerds-a-lot builds lethal weapons of mass destruction, and the cyclops maid has definitely killed and buried a body or two. Whiskers, I don’t know much about him, but I’m sure he’s done some illegal shit. And let’s not forget the great red asshole himself, Bambi, is a literal fuckin’ cannibal and serial killer! Those are not innocent fuckin’ crimes, Charlie! Just because someone is dead doesn’t make the sins they commit in life any less important or irrelevant when that’s the reason they end up Hell to begin with!”
    • Adam calls Vaggie out on her codependent behavior, pointing out that Charlie is a fully grown adult who doesn't need to be protected all the time and if anything, Vaggie constantly coddling her is actually preventing Charlie from improving herself.
Adam: You are so fuckin’ wrapped up in your "I have to protect Charlie from every fucking little thing" that you don’t even realize how codependent you are to your bitch. I might not know what romantic love is but I know a dysfunctional relationship when I fuckin’ see one, Vaggie. If you’re so worried about her safety, why haven’t you just taught Charlie how to defend herself?
Vaggie: [can only stutter in response]
Adam: I can tell you why. It’s because whether intentional or not, you’re so desperate to fulfill a role for her to justify your place in the relationship that you’re willing to actively keep her from improving herself. It’s annoying that the thing that you think is going to break your relationship is you not being good enough. The truth is that the reason your relationship is going to fail is because you’re a fuckin’ liar. Vaggie, do you trust your tall-ass girlfriend?
      Vaggie: Y-yes.
Adam: Then maybe try to act like it. And for fuck's sake, stop coddling her. She's an adult.
  • Karmic Jackpot: As a whole, I.M.P. gets a generous payment from Charlie thanks to Moxxie and Millie giving the Princess of Hell much-needed emotional support after a heavy verbal wake-up call of her Missing Steps Plan by Adam.
  • Laughably Evil: It wouldn't be Adam if his unpleasant and genocidal attitude toward Sinners weren't balanced by his comedic nature.
  • Lean and Mean: It's heavily implied that he's quite lean underneath his large robes despite his usual diet of junk food, and he's quite unpleasant to interact with even off-duty.
  • Manchild: Adam sees Charlie as this: a childish, naive, emotional woman who doesn't act her age, giving him little reason to take her seriously.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain!: While Adam had no intention of helping Charlie out in his brutal, but accurate “The Reason You Suck” Speech in chapter 5, it ultimately leads to Charlie meeting the I.M.P and, after much emotional encouragement, taking the first step into truly digging deeper into what it means to be The Redeemer.
  • The Nicknamer: Adam doesn't usually refer to people by their names, instead he gives them nicknames that reflect their physical attributes.
  • Non-Answer: When Angel Dust asks Vaggie what she knows about Adam that the others at the hotel don't, since there must be some reason why she refuses to trust him even after he frees Angel Dust from his contract, she gives a very non-specific answer because she's unwilling to admit she's a fallen Exorcist
  • Only in It for the Money: Despite Charlie's good intentions, Blitzø explicitly makes it clear to the Princess of Hell that as a hired company, I.M.P. will not just take her to the human world unless there's payment involved. It's only when Charlie hands Blitzø a large wad of cash that he quickly caves.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business:
    • Usually, Adam acts like a modern college frat boy with the perchance of being a dick toward others. But whenever Adam gets deathly quiet and serious, it's enough to rattle the Hazbin Hotel cast (except for Niffty).
      • When Charlie loses her patience and snaps at Adam for his continuing sarcastic cynic behavior at the Hotel, to the point where she slaps his phone out of his hands and calls him a Lazy Bum, Adam remains silent until Charlie calms down and realizes her mistake before giving the latter a brutal reality check regarding Sinners and the overpopulation in Hell in a venomous and serious tone.
      • When Vaggie snaps at Adam about what could he know about love when walking alongside him, she doesn't immediately get a reply and Vaggie turns to look back at Adam, who briefly has a blank expression on his face that makes Vaggie a bit uneasy. Then, to her shock, Adam admits he doesn't know anything about love in an emotionless tone before he quickly returns to his signature smirk and smugly adds on that Love Makes You Dumb. Despite Adam walking forward and carrying on like nothing ever happened, it still takes Vaggie a few moments to recompose herself as she's clearly spooked by Adam's mood swings and still unable to predict him even after so many years of knowing him. It's heavily implied that even after thousands of years, his failed marriages with Lilith and Eve are still a sore spot for him.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: Averted. During her brief trip to the human world, Charlie doesn't put on a disguise at all to blend in. Fortunately for her, the humans are so moronic that they only see Charlie as a human woman doing some sort of cosplay or wearing heavy makeup.
  • Point of Divergence:
    • The point of divergence started when Charlie, in a moment of frustration and panic, barges herself back into the meeting room just as Adam finishes his guitar solo of Hell is Forever.
    • The next point of divergence is that by making a deal with Charlie, Adam is now ordered by Sera to be stationed at the Hazbin Hotel for the 6-month duration.
    • Due to Adam's presence in the Hazbin Hotel, it leads to plenty of divergences of the first season.
      • Vaggie is forced to confront her former boss and deal with the fear of her Dark Secret being revealed to Charlie much earlier.
      • Charlie's "activities" to help the occupants being called out as ineffective by Adam, leading to an escalating argument that causes her to run out of the hotel in a Heroic BSoD, meet and befriend the I.M.P, and travel to the human world to study more effective methods to help redeem Sinners.
  • Reassigned to Antarctica: Sera has Adam stationed at the Hazbin Hotel to keep an eye on things from getting worse.
  • Secret-Keeper: At the end of chapter 3, Adam agrees to a pleading Vaggie not to reveal her Fallen Angel status to Charlie, so long as she doesn't give him a reason to.
  • Sir Swears-a-Lot: A lot of the cast curse like sailors, but Adam takes the cake.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: I.M.P. of Hazbin Hotel's sister series Helluva Boss only appears in chapters 5 and 6, but Moxxie's chance meeting with Charlie played a big role in helping Charlie (with payment of course) in her brief quest in taking the first step into improving her methods to redeem Sinners by going to the human world.
  • Smarter Than They Look: Just like in the canon show, Adam is more intelligent and savvy than what his macho fratbro persona would suggest, as being Long-Lived after living and dying after the Fall would leave him a great deal of experience and wisdom.
  • Stopped Caring: Regarding Sinners, who are his blood descendants mind you, Adam wants nothing to do with them besides exterminating them after witnessing every known atrocity committed by them in his Long-Lived existence.
Charlie: Aren’t these your descendants? Shouldn’t you be wanting them to be rehabilitated and saved from damnation?
Adam: You don’t know anything you are talking about, and it’s bold of you to assume I care about any of the sinners down here like they’re my own children. Maybe if so many of my descendants weren’t sinful pieces of shit I would care more. To put it simple for you to understand, Princess, your people are fuckin’ awful.
  • Thought They Knew Already: When confronting Vaggie in chapter 3 and congratulating her relationship with "Lilith's little hottie", Adam verbally wonders how Charlie was willing to date an Exorcist angel. It's only seeing Vaggie outwardly flinch that Adam immediately spots a thread.
Adam: I must say, I got to give props to you for landing Lilith’s little hottie. Never thought you’d be able to land fuckin’ royalty, but I’m even more surprised that the Princess of Hell would willingly choose to date an exorcist angel.
    [Vaggie flinched at Adam’s words.]
Adam: She doesn’t know, does she?
[Adam looked at the ex-exorcist angel in disbelief and a malicious grin started to form on his face when he saw the look of pure terror on Vaggie’s face.]
