Yet Another Legendary Chatfic
is a Pokémon chatfic in which Arceus decides to repurpose ancient Psionic Channels he made as a way for the Legendaries (and Ash) to stay in contact with each other. Hilarity Ensues.
Yet Another Legendary Chatfic contain examples of:
- Adaptational Angst Upgrade: As this fic combines several different continuities, a lot of Legendaries have thus been been given more trauma and/or angst as a result.
- Adaptational Gender Identity: Several cases. Palkia is the most notable example; while being typically referred to as genderless in the anime and referred to with masculine pronouns in some spin-off media, here Palkia is explicitly female.
- Played With in regard to Darkrai. While Darkrai uses female pronouns, it's explicitly stated that she does so to honor Alicia's memory. When the specter of her past self is manifested, the narration refers to him with male pronouns.
- Adaptation Expansion: A fair few examples, both in the story proper and the author's notes.
- The Anime Plasma Arc was the result of someone filming Plasma's Pokémon abuse in the Dreamyand and blowing the whistle on them early into their BW plan, forcing them to drastically shift their plan to B2W2's without actually having the resources or influence to do so.
- Ingo is a Faller, having arrived in Hisui via Ultra Wormhole.
- Giratina is not just the incarnation of Antimatter, but rather the incarnation of Quantum Mechanics as a whole, with Antimatter being a major part of their Domain.
- It's subtly implied that Kyurem's ability to see the future in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity is because of the Entralink.
- The Original Dragon of Unova and Zygarde once fought, with the latter winning. Kyurem is still bitter about the loss.
- Amnesiac Dissonance: Darkrai.
- Arc Welding: Kyurem's ability to change forms on the fly is stated to be the result of experimentation by Colress, linking the anime Plasma arc to the movies. However, it's a limited-use ability and not as strong as actually fusing with Reshiram or Zekrom.
- Baleful Polymorph: In chapter 5, appropriately titled "In which Ash gets turned into a Pokémon again", Ash gets turned into a Riolu. He's not that bothered by it.
- Because Destiny Says So: Kyurem's worldview, which is carried over from Gates to Infinity. They actively argue with Dialga and Darkrai about it at a few points.
- Canon Welding: While the story is explicitly set in the Anime universe, both the Orre games and the Mystery Dungeon series are major parts of the story.
- The Chosen One: Dawn/Akari.
- Composite Character: A surprising amount:
- Dawn is Akari.
- Similarly, the Darkrai from the 10th movie is the same Darkrai from the Mystery Dungeon series, having been spat out of the Dimensional Hole in Alamos Town with total amnesia.
- Likewise, Kyurem is both their anime self and their Mystery Dungeon counterpart-although the "how" has yet to be explained.
- The Lugia of Shamouti is turned into XD-001.
- In a more comedic example, Rayquaza's scales darken when he's stressed, making him both the normal/green Rayquaza seen in the anime and the Shiny Rayquaza that shows up in both ''Hoopa and the Clash of Ages'' and Pokémon Horizons.
- Of all people, Lillie is heavily implied to be the Explorers of Sky protagonist.
- Death Seeker: Implied for Kyurem. Regardless of whether they manage to merge back to the Original Dragon or die trying, Yveltal believes that either outcome is preferable to their current existence.
- Darkrai exhibits shades of this after regaining her memories.
- Early-Installment Weirdness: A few examples.
- Giratina speaks in Zalgotext in the earlier chapters and outright refers to themself as "I and "Me". In later chapters, Giratina uses a more layered, eldritch manner of speak, and goes out of their way to not directly refer to themself at all in their dialogue. (The is explained In-Universe as being the result of the Psionic Channels "Translating" Giratina's odd speech patterns into something easier to understand; when said code "breaks", Giratina's speech patterns are rendered properly.)
- The earlier chapters have more references to real-world places and organizations like Teotihuacan and the Conquistadores.
- Eldritch Abomination: Giratina, the incarnation of Antimatter and Quantum Mechanics. Tis even extends to the way their dialogue is written: Giratina does not refer to themself in dialogue at all.
- Arceus also qualifies. While he's less overt about it most of the time, there are a few moments when his Eldritch nature is displayed.
- Eternatus and Necrozma are two of the Defeated Giants mentioned in the Flame Plate's inscription.
- The entity under Area Zero is believed to be this by the cast and is treated as such; however, the author has stated that the aforementioned entity is just Terapagos and that the juxtaposition is setting up a future chapter.
- Face–Heel Turn: While never exactly heroic in the story, Kyurem still takes the turn into full villainy by fusing with Reshiram and setting themself against the other Legendaries.
- The Friend Nobody Likes: Mew.
- God Is Good: Very much the case with Arceus. While he's flawed in some ways, Arceus is fundamentally a benevolent deity and a deeply caring father.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Hoopa.
- Darkrai has shades of this, as her personality shifts closer to her pre-amnesiac self upon regaining her memories.
- Harmless Villain: Pecharunt. According to Lugia, Pecharunt is genuinely malevolent and has potential to be a major threat, but is also extremely bad at actually being evil. The author compares it to Zim or Veigar.
- Heel–Face Turn: Darkrai, on account of her amnesia and meeting Alicia.
- Large Ham: Zekrom. Palkia has moments of this too, as a Call-Back to Explorers of Sky.
- Mysterious Past: Rayquaza. He was involved with a Mesoamerican/Mexico-inspired region in some way in the distant past, even speaking Nahuatl, but little is known about it other than vague mentions of places and individuals he knew.
- No Name Given: Played With. Despite the fact that Kyurem is explicitly the husk of the original Dragon of Unova, the fic goes out of its way to refer to their past self by that title and always avoids mentioning the Original Dragon's name directly.
- Noodle Incident: Whatever Darkrai did to piss off Zacian.
- "Not So Different" Remark: Darkrai tries to invoke this against Kyurem in order to talk them down, only to be met with the response that they're Not So Similar.
- Odd Friendship: Kyurem and XD-001. Darkrai and Ho-Oh also qualify.
- Oh, Crap!: Darkrai when Kyurem taps into the Entralink and is able to predict her strategy.
- Only Sane Man: Giratina is this to the Creation Family. Rayquaza wants to be this, but he's Not.
- Painting the Medium: More than a few examples.
- The Creation Dragons, Arceus, Necrozma, Mega Rayquaza, and XD-001 speak in bolded text. Giratina takes it a step further by initially speaking in Zalgotext, before shifting to a layered, shifting sentence structure reminiscent of The Board.
- Yveltal speaks in bolded ALL CAPS. In later chapters, this shifts to Small Caps. Similarly, Xerneas speaks in italics.
- Chapter 57 marks the inclusion of image sprites for every character from the PMD Sprite Repository, which allows for grater reactions and expressiveness.
- Miraidon uses a different font entirely.
- Papa Wolf: Arceus.
- Parents as People: Arceus has been shown to doubt his parenting skills, and worries over whether Giratina's banishment made him a bad father. He also made the Creation Dragons the chat Moderators-a title that only Giratina has been shown to take seriously.
- Seen It All: Ash and Dawn. After learning that Dawn got dragged to 1873, Ash barely bats an eye, just being happy that she's alive and excited to see her team.
- Shout-Out: A Lot.
- Yveltal's speech patterns and characterization are inspired by the character of DEATH. Discworld itself is referenced throughout the story.
- Dialga uses the Song of Healing to Purify the Legendary Beasts.
- Some of the "Spooky Mode"/Halloween usernames: "ChampionOfUnknownKadath" (Darkrai), "Nuclear Chaos Azathoth" (Arceus), "Yog-Sothoth" (Giratina), "NoOneCanHearYouScream" (Palkia), and "BloodForTheBloodGod" (Rayquaza).
- Zygarde sings part of "Do You Hear the People Sing?" in chapter 72, as a meta reference to the announcement of Pokémon Legends Z-A.
- House of Leaves gets a shout-out in chapters 82 and 83.
- The Unchosen One: Ironically, Ash. According to Arceus, Ash was never directly a Chosen One himself, as he was never outright marked for a big destined fate or chosen by a Legendary-but by virtue of being friends with many people who actually are Chosen or marked by destiny for greatness in some way and their bonds rubbing off on him, he's ended up becoming a Chosen One-By-Proxy.
- Time Abyss: Most Legendaries qualify due to having a very long lifespan, but Arceus and the Creation Dragons are an extreme example due to being there at the birth of the Universe.
