Fan Fic / The Story Of Twilight Glow

The Story Of Twilight Glow is a My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic fanfic by Jeweled Pen.

Twilight was always fated to be the savior of Equestria, along with her friends. But fate can be so easily altered. What happens in one alternate realm when instead of marrying a unicorn, Twilight's mother had instead married an earth pony, resulting in her daughter being hornless? Without her magic, Twilight's future and destiny are far less certain, as is the destiny of all of Equestria.

However, destiny is not so easily set off course. When the princess of the night returns, can one little earth pony hope to be the one to help her damaged heart?

Currently ongoing. It can be found here.

Tropes Are:

  • Adaptational Wimp: Zigzagged with Twilight. Being an Earth Pony, she lacks the power her canon self has. However, she is still a very brave pony, willing to stand up to Nightmare Moon.
  • Alternate Universe Fic: Twilight was born an Earth pony, and whilst she was still fascinated by magic, she instead pursued a writing career, since she obviously can't work unicorn magic herself. Moondancer became Celestia's student.
  • Anti-Climax: This is Twilight's reaction to learning that Nightmare Moon's battle with Celestia lasted ten minutes.
  • Armor-Piercing Slap: Twilight gives one to Sunset Shimmer after seeing how spiteful and petty she really is.
  • Advertisement:
  • Beleaguered Assistant: Twilight is this to Nightmare Moon.
  • Cowardly Lion: Twilight is understandably nervous and apprehensive about working for Nightmare Moon. However, that doesn't stop Twilight from standing up to the Nightmare, or even attacking her, when her cruelty and pettiness gets intolerable.
  • Did You Just Flip Off Cthulhu?: Twilight has little problem outright defying Nightmare Moon.
    • She has equally little problem with snarking at Tirek, whom she outright calls out as a "cliche villain".
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Nightmare Moon can take retribution to outright extremes. At one point, Nightmare Moon outright threatened to destroy Rarity's life if she didn't design the castle properly. Much of Twilight's grief comes from trying to control this tendency within Nightmare Moon.
  • Do Not Taunt Cthulhu: On several occasions, Nightmare Moon demonstrates she is somepony you really don't want to anger. When Rainbow Dash tries to attack her, Nightmare nearly mutilates her, and was only stopped by Twilight.
  • Advertisement:
  • The Dreaded: Nightmare Moon establishes herself as somepony you don't want looking at you funny.
  • Drives Like Crazy: Human Twilight Sparkle is very reckless, much to Twilight Glow's chagrin.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: Chrysalis, after being imprisoned, rejects Twilight's help, believing that nopony would actually want to help her and Changelings.
  • Evil vs. Evil:
    • Nightmare Moon has Tirek bound up in the palace dungeon, and has forced him to teach her how to use his magic stealing abilities so she can drain the powers from Celestia and Cadance. It's implied that Tirek is just waiting for an opportunity to strike against her.
    • Queen Chrysalis has, as per canon, planned to invade Equestria and conquer its ponies for herself. This time, though, she takes on Twilight Glow's form instead of Cadance's, in order to subvert Nightmare Moon's rule.
  • For Want of a Nail: Twilight being an Earth Pony causes major changes to the story. Most notably, Moondancer and her partners turn out to not be the "real" Elements of Harmony, and thusly they are unable to purify Nightmare Moon. This means that she conquers Equestria, and things just keep progressing from there.
  • Future Imperfect: In the story, nopony really knows the story of Nightmare Moon, and thus Twilight make adaptations of their own.
  • Heroic BSoD: Twilight breaks into tears when Nightmare Moon nearly kills Spike after he ends going into his dragon greed mode, and she is forced to ask Discord for help. It sinks into her how powerless she is, and how heartless Nightmare Moon is.
  • Hero with Bad Publicity: Many ponies think Twilight has outright aided Nightmare Moon's ascent, not realizing she is the only reason Nightmare Moon hasn't done worse.
  • Historical Villain Upgrade: In-universe, Nightmare Moon orders Twilight to villainize Celestia. This is when Twilight really begins to outright defy Nightmare Moon.
  • In-Series Nickname: Nightmare Moon refers to Twilight as "bard".
  • Kick the Dog: It is bad enough that Sunset won't return to Equestria to stop Nightmare Moon, but she outright gloats about how Equestria deserves to suffer.
  • Mana Drain: With Moondancer's (reluctant) help, Nightmare Moon manages to use Tirek's magic absorbing powers to help her absorb even more magic. She uses this to drain ponies that could challenge her might or power.
  • Morality Pet: Deconstructed. While Twilight can temper Nightmare Moon's anger somewhat and push her toward more rational goals, Nightmare Moon is, at her core, a ruthless tyrant, and will seek to preserve her power above all else, meaning Twilight's influence on Nightmare Moon is very limited.
  • Negated Moment of Awesome: Moondancer and her friends failed to harness the Elements of Harmony.
  • Noodle Incident: Apparently, Chancellor Puddinghead was a vampire fighter, but little is this story discussed.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Under Twilight's influence, Nightmare Moon becomes a somewhat less unhinged, though still tyrannical, ruler.
  • “The Reason You Suck” Speech: Twilight Glow gives Sunset Shimmer] a major chewing out after the latter gloats about how Equestria and Celestia deserve to suffer under Nightmare's tyranny.
  • Running Gag:
    • Mention any available subject that exists in Equestria and beyond, Twilight would most probably have a minor or a major in it.
      • In fact, the only subject she doesn't have as a minor or a major is in shadow weavers, and it's only due to it being open to public recently as a subject to study.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Jet Set and Upper Crust, who show up in chapter 20 with a signed petition for the restoration of the sun, and are literally unable to comprehend that Nightmare Moon will not listen to them, no matter how many ponies they get to sign it.
  • Trapped in Villainy: Moondancer would rather not help Nightmare Moon, but she faces the death of her friends if she doesn't do her bidding.
  • Wild Card: Discord. It's implied he remembers the canon universe, and he finds this parallel universe quite odd — if not endearing. As a result, he settles mostly for the occasional minor prank on Nightmare Moon and just to watch things as they happen.
  • Your Costume Needs Work: When Nightmare Moon initially appears, Twilight assumes she is an actor and begins prodding and poking her.

How well does it match the trope?
