Mutual Killing Game Gensokyo is a fanfiction on Archive of Our Own that combines elements of the Touhou Project and Danganronpa franchises.

Fourteen of Gensokyo's best and brightest wake up in a mysterious building with no memory of how they got there.

A mysterious black-and-white bear named Monokuma shows up and tells them that in order to leave, they must kill someone else and get away with it.

It's... Tropes Time!

  • Adaptational Jerkass: Monokuma, surprisingly. He is now more than willing to deliver Cold-Blooded Torture for very little reason.
  • Adaptational Species Change: Monokuma is now a tsukumogami rather than an advanced robot puppet.
  • Anti-Magic: Something is de-powering all of the participants, although what isn't clear yet.
  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: This example, even lampshaded by an author's note.
Narration: [Yuuka] was an absolute mess – her hair looked like she'd just got out of bed in prison, she had the face of someone who'd been crying for hours, her eyes were pink, her clothes were tattered, and she wasn't carrying the parasol she always held with her.
    • In a more meta sense, Yuuka did commit arson and murder, but the crime she got punished for was stealing candles.
  • Batman Gambit: Yuuka pulls a frightening one on Koishi: manipulating her into a situation that would seem to be a trap, knowing she would attack Reisen.
  • Bread, Eggs, Milk, Squick: Monokuma's morning announcement: "wakey wakey, eggs and murder!"
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: Wouldn't be Danganronpa without it...
    • Reisen is stabbed through the throat with a sword.
    • Koishi has her Poke in the Third Eye forcibly undone so she can feel empathy again and have a My God, What Have I Done?. She then does nothing to avoid getting a spear in the heart.
  • Despair Event Horizon / Despair Gambit: Monokuma's ultimate goal.
    • During her execution, when Koishi's third eye is forcibly reopened and she can feel regret for what she did, she doesn't even bother to move when a spear goes directly into her heart.
  • Disability Alibi: A variation. Reimu concludes that Sakuya probably didn't murder Reisen because she was impaired in some way.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • When Yuuka describes how she found the armory, her tone becomes dissapointed when she points out that there were no magical weapons in it. So, of course, she centers her plan on the one piece of magic she could get her hands on: the candles.
    • The distorted Monokuma announcement that plays in Reimu's room in Chapter 6 repeats the word 'seven' eight times. The culprit of Act 1 is Koishi. Koishi's Leitmotif, "Hartmann's Youkai Girl", is in 7/8 time signature.
  • History Repeats:
    • The perpetrator and the culprit of the first trial are not the same, just like in the first trial of Goodbye Despair.
  • Improbably Female Cast: It's Touhou, so this is a given. The only named male character is Monokuma.
  • Lack of Empathy: Koishi. Although it's undone by Monokuma's execution, just long enough for her to regret her actions before she's killed.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: In typical Danganronpa fashion, no one remembers how they got into the Deadly Game.
  • Like Is, Like, a Comma: Sumireko speaks in this fashion occasionally. As did Aya, when she was imitating Sumireko.
  • Magitek: This replaces Monokuma's usual surveillance devices.
  • Nap-Inducing Speak: Sumireko does this to Aya.
  • Oh, My Gods!: Multiple characters say variations of this.
  • Prisoner's Dilemma: Inverted, as it concerns the typical Danganronpa Deadly Game. Alice names the trope when describing how if the participants cooperate, no one benefits, and if someone kills another participant, either the killer benefits or everyone else benefits if they catch the killer.
  • Properly Paranoid: Marisa, concerning Yuuka.
  • Psychic Strangle: Monokuma does this to Sakuya in the second chapter.
  • Pulling the Thread: This is how Yuuka's plan is discovered. Specifically, she was reading by the light of a magical candle that only lights up during the day, at night. This proves she was somehow experimenting with the candles, and proves her connection to the murder plot.
  • Refuge in Audacity: Yuuka, a plant youkai, centers her murder plan around fire.
  • Security Cling: Alice does this to Marisa when the heavily injured Yuuka re-enters the dining hall.
  • Sleep Cute: Marisa and Alice on the second day. It's even used to give them an alibi.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute / Similar Squad:
  • Sympathetic Murderer: Koishi.
  • Terms of Endangerment: Yuuka, towards Alice.
  • Vaudeville Hook: Monokuma creates one magically to drag Yuuka off to Cold-Blooded Torture.
  • Youkai: Half of the participants are youkai or half-youkai, but in this story Monokuma is also one as well.
