What would happen if two of Japan's most famous franchises were to cross over? The result is Hail to the King
, written by Thuktun Flishithy (author of The Last Daughter). It is not to be confused with an MLP fanwork of the same name.
The basic premise of the story is that an accident during an experiment with the Dimension Tide accidentally sends Godzilla to the world of Evangelion, referred to as (E)Earth in-story, right before Sachiel attacks. Fortunately, he's a good guy in this one, on par with his Showa counterpart in terms of heroics.
Unbeknownst to anyone, someone else arrives on (E)Earth and ends up physically bonding to the nearest available human: Shinji Ikari. As Shinji and everyone else tries to come to grips with the new situation, Godzilla decides to teach the Angels who the real King of the Monsters is.
The author started out a remake titled Leviathan. However it introduces considerable changes since the first chapter (such like Shinji bonding with someone else, namely Ultraman, and the kaiju were native to the Evangelion universe, and were also affected by Second Impact), and it seems to aim to be its own beast. It can be read in FF.net, SpaceBattles and Sufficient Velocity forums.
Tropes:
- Above the Influence: Asuka accidentally drinks a G-cell serum and her behavior becomes even more aggressive due to the influence of Godzilla's instincts. To make matters worse, it also leads to a vastly increased libido. She immediately targets Shinji as the object of her desires; constantly calling him "mate" as she violently tries to seduce him. Fortunately, Shinji is able to snap out of the hormone-induced fugue and reject her advances long enough for the serum to wear off.
- Averted later on when Maya is given a smaller sample of the serum to heal her injuries sustained during the Eleventh Angel's attack, and her subsequent attempt to seduce her "Sempai" using romance instead of force actually works.
- Absurdly Sharp Blade: Prog knives prove to be useful against kaiju, and the Spear of Longinus is able to impale Ghidorah with ease.
- Achilles' Heel: Godzilla keeps his canon example of the second brain in his hip, which is described by the author as a large nerve cluster. Zeruel manages to stab into it with his ribbon arms, paralyzing Godzilla and allowing the Angel to get the upper hand.
- Action Girl: On the human side, we have Asuka, Rei, and Misato. On the kaiju side, we have Mothra.
- Adaptational Badass: Shinji, when he bonds with Zone Fighter. He essentially becomes a kaiju-sized Flying Brick, and Zone Fighter's constant companionship serves to help Shinji become more confident as the story progresses.
- Air-Vent Passageway: Rei, Toji, Kensuke, Hyuga, Aoba, Maya, and Unot do this in Chapter 16. Lampshaded when Asuka wonders how Unot could even fit inside, considering the fact that he is an eight-foot tall alien.
- Alien Invasion: It turns out that all of the alien invaders repelled from (G)Earth have teamed up and are planning to invade (E)Earth.
- Alliterative Title: Chapter 7's title is Titanic Tussle in Tokyo Harbor!
- All There in the Manual: The Spacebattles.com thread offers information not found in the story proper, like a partial timeline of Godzilla's universe and the various names he's been called throughout history.
- Apologises a Lot: Shinji's habit to apologize automatically gets several eyebrows raised in chapter 3:Ritsuko:"Good morning, Shinji. I'm Dr. Ritsuko Akagi, head of Project E, [...] You gave us quite a scare with that head wound."

Shinji:Sorry! - April Fools' Day: A short snippet written by the author showcasing a Darkest Hour Curb-Stomp Battle that probably killed off the entire cast was made for this day. The fact that a Kaiju gives off the line "April Fool's, muthafucka!" while holding a dismembered, despairing Zone Fighter at bay is a punchline heavy on Black Comedy. And the kaiju in question that kills them all? Gabara.
- Apocalypse How: Godzilla's meltdown would have ranged from a Class 4 to a Class X if not for Shinji's intervention.
- Attention Whore: Asuka craves for attention in order to feel her existence validated, so she gets upset when she can't show off or fail to kill an enemy.
- Back from the Dead: Godzilla comes back from his meltdown in Chapter 25 when his soul awakens within Kiryu just as he's about to kill Junior.
- Badass Adorable: Godzilla Jr, referred to as "Junior" throughout the story. He's cute enough to warm even Rei's heart, and proves to be just as tenacious as a fighter as his old man when the Meganula swarm try to hurt her.
- Batman Can Breathe in Space: It seems that being on Mars does nothing to hamper Godzilla's ability to live. Discussed and justified, as it turns out Godzilla is close to being The Needless.
- Battle Couple: Shinji and Asuka gradually evolve into one through the history.
- Battle in the Rain: Shinji and Godzilla's fight against Biollante takes place during a torrential downpour.
- Beam-O-War: Godzilla's Atomic Ray clashes with Ramiel's laser. Godzilla wins, easily.
- Beam Spam: Referenced by name when Godzilla and Shinji fight Biollante. It is also Mothra's chief method of fighting.
- Behemoth Battle: Duh. Exaggerated during the final battle.
- Berserk Button: Don't mess with Junior, or you'll have to answer to Godzilla himself. Junior also has one of his own: don't hurt humans. The Meganula and Gaira find this out the hard way.
- Big Brother Mentor: Zone Fighter acts that way towards Shinji. He teaches him to fight and to be more confident, assertive, sefless and courageous. Through this process Shinji grows a spine and becomes a hero.
- Big Damn Heroes: Too many examples to count, really.
- The first example in the story comes when Godzilla catches a VTOL that would've crushed Shinji and Misato during Sachiel's attack, right before laying on the smack down.
- The Big Damn Kiss: Shinji and Asuka when they officially become a couple in Chapter 20.
- Bizarre Alien Biology: Apparently Nebulans have collapsible bodies like rats; they can squeeze through anything they can stick their head in.
- They also love sugar. How much? Unot asks for half a cup in his coffee.
- Bloodier and Gorier: Than canon Godzilla media, though the violence is on par with some of the nastier moments in Evangelion. When monsters fight, expect for blood and guts to go flying.
- Body Horror: Monster X's transformation into King Ghidorah is not a pretty sight.
- Bridge Bunnies: The usual trio in Evangelion get the addition of a minor Nebulan character named Unot Vorkouta. He's a friendly guy, but the fact that he looks like (and is) an eight-foot tall cockroach-man makes it difficult for him to connect with them, though they appear to be warming up to him.
- Broad Strokes: This story incorporates a mishmash of Godzilla's various continuities for the Toho side of things. While characters and monsters from all continuities appear in this universe, it seems to predominately follow the Showa continuity. It also adds some backstory to Godzilla, Mothra, Anguirus, Rodan, and King Ghidorah. In this universe, King Ghidorah was responsible for the KT extinction event, but was beaten back by Godzilla, Gigamoth, Rodan, and Anguirus. After the battle, Gigamoth splits into Mothra and Battra.
- But Now I Must Go: After the war Godzilla and the heroic Kaiju leave Japan and return to their island.
- Captain Ersatz: Zone Fighter was already one of Ultraman. This is taken up a notch in the story, where Zone Fighter is an energy being that bonds with Shinji in order to save his life, just like what Ultraman did with Hayata.
- Combat Pragmatist: Godzilla. There is no such thing as "honorable combat" when you're a skyscraper-sized radioactive dinosaur with an attitude problem.
- Combat Tentacles: Gaghiel gets lots of these. There's also the Godzilla and Eva canon examples of Biollante and Shamshel.
- Continuity Nod: OH DEAR GOD WHERE DO WE BEGIN.
- Apparently soma is now a part of standard EDF first aid kits.
- When Shinji and Asuka watch some (G)Earth documentaries, Asuka complains that the one "about a monster literally made of shit" was terrible. Godzilla vs. Hedorah was one of the poorer-received Godzilla films.
- Characters like Miki Saegusa, Douglas Gordon, Shinichi Ozaki, and Miyuki Ontonashi make an appearance in the story.
- During the fight with the Meganula swarm, Shinji stomps on Junior's tail, causing him to fire his atomic breath.
- Cruel and Unusual Death: This is a crossover between Godzilla and Evangelion. It is to be expected.
- Sachiel's death is far gorier than in canon. Here, Godzilla viciously mauls it, rips its arm off, beats it with said arm, and then starts on the core before the Angel self-destructs.
- Titanosaurus has one of the most brutal deaths in the story. Godzilla pries his jaws open until they break, then his cybernetic arm is shoved down his throat and detonated by a hearty dose of atomic breath, pulping his insides.
- Megaguirus is on the wrong end of this trope courtesy of a berserk Unit-01. The Eva rips out her stinger, shanks her repeatedly with said stinger until it breaks, then eats her.
- Curb-Stomp Battle: Most fights are this on one side or the other, relatively even fights are a rarity in the story. One of the biggest examples in the story is Operation Kusanagi. A considerable portion of the JSSDF, an N2 mine, and the three Evangelions go up against Godzilla when he arrives to rescue Junior from NERV. It fails miserably.
- Defeat Equals Explosion: King Ghidorah makes an impressive light show when he is finally defeated.
- Determinator: Shinji grows into this role as the story progresses. When Israfel arrives immediately after Megaguirus attacks, he flies over to fight it, despite having a severe stab wound in his side.
- Godzilla himself, as per canon.
- Dog Pile of Doom: The MP-Evas attempt this on Godzilla. It doesn't work.
- Drama-Preserving Handicap: Shinji's fight with Israfel is a lot more suspenseful because he had been stabbed in the side by Megaguirus not a few minutes earlier.
- The Dreaded: King Ghidorah is described by even the villains as the most evil and powerful creature in either universe. Even Gordon is terrified of him, and there is a major Oh, Crap! moment when they mistake a far inferior clone as the real deal.
- Dynamic Entry: Godzilla does this in Chapter 7 when he bursts out of the ocean and shoulders Gaghiel in the jaw right as it's about to crush the Over the Rainbow.
- Early-Bird Cameo: Asuka makes her appearance after the first battle.
- Eaten Alive:
- Megaguirus suffers this fate at the hands (and teeth) of Unit-01.
- As does poor Baragon during the final battle, courtesy of the MP-Evas.
- Eldritch Abomination:
- Surprisingly enough, Godzilla is one to Leliel, and likely the other Angels, as he is a sentient being that lacks an AT-field. As AT-fields are linked with souls, this is disconcerting -to put it mildly- to them.
- In a more straightforward example, King Ghidorah is regarded as one
- Evil-Detecting Dog: Godzilla and the other kaiju seem to have a sixth sense for trouble; they get a tingling sensation in the back of their heads whenever an Angel appears.
- Gratuitous English: Zone Fighter tricks Shinji into this as the key to use his powers.
- Grievous Harm with a Body: Very frequent. It appears that this story's Godzilla has quite the penchant for ripping out a monster's arm and beating said monster with it. Just ask Sachiel, Titanosaurus, Israfel (both of them)...
- A less gory example of this occurs in Chapter 10. During Operation Kusanagi, Godzilla pummels Unit-02 into the ground with Unit-01.
- In Chapter 22, Shinji uses Anguirus as a mace against Zeruel.
- Half the Man He Used to Be: Monster X is bisected by a particularly enraged Shinji. Unfortunately, it doesn't stick.
- Healing Factor: Shinji gets one when he becomes Zone Fighter. A Downplayed Trope, as it mainly serves to help preserve his secret by making bruises he gains in combat disappear around half an hour or so after.
- Godzilla keeps his Regenerator G-1 ability, something that Bardiel steals. The result is something somewhat similar to Orga.
- Heroic Host: Shinji becomes the host to Zone Fighter.
- I Have Many Names:
Word of Thuktun has it that Godzilla, Mothra, Rodan, and Anguirus have been sighted around the globe throughout our history, prompting this trope. Many mythological creatures were actually inspired by them.- Godzilla- Leviathan, Jormungand, the Island that Swims.
- Anguirus- Behemoth, Fenrir, the Mountain that Walks.
- Rodan- Ziz, Hraesvelgr, the Endless Shadow
- Mothra- The Lady of the Spirit.
- Jawbreaker: Godzilla does this to Titanosaurus in Chapter 7.
- The Juggernaut: Godzilla demonstrates this side of himself in Chapter 10. Virtually the entirety of the JSSDF, three biomechanical killing machines made from the flesh of godlike beings, and a freaking N2 mine in-between him and Junior?. He doesn't even slow his stride.
- Giant Equals Invincible: Played straight, then gradually subverted as time goes on. The (E)Earth militaries are useless when it comes to harming Kaiju, Angels, or Evas. The (G)Earth military, however, has incredibly advanced technology and decades of experience against Kaiju, allowing them to kill the weakest ones, wound stronger ones, and provide distractions against the most powerful ones.
- Giant Robot Hands Save Lives: Giant Kaiju Hands in this instance. Junior does this when saving Hikari from Gaira.
- Grew a Spine: Zone Fighter helps Shinji to grow one during the fic. Shinji is still quiet and calm, but he becomes more confident and assertive.
- He's Back!: During the final battle, Gendo reveals a trump card: Kiryu, made from Godzilla's remains after he died fighting Zeruel. It proceeds to almost kill Junior, but right before the final blow it regains its memories of Godzilla and attacks the MP-Evas. Then, it suddenly peels off its armor to reveal a fully regenerated Godzilla.
- Hour of Power: Shinji has this limit as Zone Fighter.
- Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Shinji is impaled by Monster X's tail during the final battle. Thankfully, he gets better.
- Kissing Under the Influence: Asuka does this to Shinji, courtesy of a G-cell serum in Chapter 15. It leads to an Above the Influence moment as well.
- Kraken and Leviathan: According to Word of God, ancient sightings of Godzilla inspired the legend of the Leviathan, among others.
- Kung-Fu Sonic Boom: Loads of these, especially during the final battle.
- Laser-Guided Karma: Gendo’s insistence on The Scenario leads him to ally with the Kaiju and Geofront’s enemies to kill Godzilla. And they temporarily succeed, resulting in Kiryu. Unfortunately for him, Godzilla revives, once again putting The Scenario in jeopardy. The Scenario is then completely obliterated by King Ghidorah’s revival, who kills Gendo himself as an afterthought.
- Light Is Not Good: Once again, King Ghidorah. He is a beautiful golden dragon that casts a heavenly light wherever he goes. He is also the most psychotic and malicious threat ever faced by the cast.
- Lighter and Softer: Than Evangelion canon. Shinji meets a friend who helps him out, Nerv gains invaluable allies who join the fight, and the worst canonical tragedies are avoided.
- Love Confession: The first thing Asuka did after accidentally drinking a G-cells serum -which boosted her physical abilities, hormones and instinctive behavior but lessened her inhibitions- was tackle Shinji, declare he was hers and demanded to be taken by him.
- Love Interest:
- Shinji and Asuka to each other.
- Magic Music: The Shobijin use this to heal Shinji after his disastrous fight with Israfel.
- Man Bites Man: Godzilla and the other kaiju bite their enemies with alarming frequency, as does Unit-01.
- Mecha Show: You have Humongous Mecha, cyborgs, space-ships, sci-fi weaponry built to fight giant monsters...
- Metronomic Man Mashing: Godzilla does this with a clone of King Ghidorah in Chapter 17.
- Mind Rape:
- Leliel tries this on Asuka when she is pulled into the Dirac Sea. Fortunately, Shinji manages to keep it from completely breaking her by engaging in a Battle in the Center of the Mind with the Angel.
- Miki threatens Ritsuko with this in Chapter 22 after the truth about the Evas is revealed.
- Names to Run Away from Really Fast: King Ghidorah's many titles include the Golden Destroyer, the Abomination, the King of Terror, the Destroyer of Worlds, the Antithesis to Creation, and the Herald of Armageddon.
- Godzilla's own title says it all. The King of the Monsters. This is the Kaiju you want on your side in a fight and the one even Ghidorah thinks twice about going up against even if he is a dreaded menace himself.
- The Needless: According to Zone Fighter, Godzilla is almost this. As long as he has a source of atomic radiation, he is able to survive just about anywhere. It serves as a justification for why he can be frozen in icebergs or submerged in magma for years without harm.
- No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: Shinji gets one courtesy of Israfel in Chapter 11, due in part to the fact that he had already been stabbed by Megaguirus.
- There's also the one Unit-00 gets in Chapter 10, when she tries to fight Godzilla during Operation Kusanagi.
Ritsuko: Misato, I've seen victims of bear attacks that got off luckier. [Unit-00] has six broken ribs, a fractured shin, severe lacerations across its chest, two missing arms, and its back is completely snapped in half. - Nuke 'em: Shamshel is hit with an N2 mine instead of Sachiel in this story. Godzilla is also hit with an N2 mine during Operation Kusanagi. It doesn't work.
- Oh, Crap!: Plenty of times in the story. There is a notable Mass "Oh, Crap!" moment in Chapter 10, when Godzilla No Sells an N2 mine without even slowing his stride, just after destroying all of their automatic defenses. It's mentioned that most of the characters begin to swear loudly when they realize what happened.
- Gendo has one when Kiryu goes berserk and regenerates back into Godzilla.
- There's an even bigger one when Monster X transforms into King Ghidorah.
- Outside-Context Problem: NERV was created to fight Angels and Gendo thought he had planned for everything... but a bizarre accident in the Godzilla universe sent the King of Monsters, several of its Kaiju and human allies and several of its Kaiju enemies to the "Evangelion" universe. Oh, and his son Shinji accidentally merges with Zone Fighter (Ultraman in the rewrite). As it was quickly proved, NERV has no way to deal with Kaijus, let alone the most powerful of them, and Gendo's attempts to remove Godzilla's presence from his scenario backfire awfully. And he definitely was not prepared for Shinji becoming mentored by a Toku hero.
- Papa Wolf: Godzilla retains this trait from canon. NERV finds out the hard way when they capture Junior and try to stop Godzilla with the Evas.Zone Fighter: "I remember the last time someone tried to hurt Junior. They still haven't found all the pieces of him yet."
- Parental Substitute: When Shinji was unable to synch with Unit 01 Misato decided to take him in, and she also became Asuka's guardian when she arrived to Tokyo-3.
- Powers in the First Episode: In the first chapter Shinji bonds with an alien and becomes the super-hero Zone Fighter (Ultraman in the second version).
- Pummel Duel: Godzilla and a berserk Unit-01 briefly engage in this in Chapter 10.
- Punctuated! For! Emphasis!: Shinji, when fights Leliel to protect Asuka:Shinji: "Get. Away. From. Her."
- Rasputinian Death: King Ghidorah. He gets his chest torn open, a fractured wing, a snapped neck (he still has two more to use), and is generally mutilated before he regenerates. Then his has his core ripped out of his chest, is mutilated again, has one of his heads ripped off, and is finally thrown into the stratosphere and obliterated by a Spiral Ray.
- Recycled in SPACE: One of the chapters takes place on Mars and features a particularly large battle.
- Red Eyes, Take Warning: When Godzilla has his Superpower Meltdown, this is averted. The author lampshades the expectation, then shows that Godzilla's eyes have instead turned a glowing white similar to his GMK incarnation.
- Relationship Upgrade: Shinji and Asuka eventually get together.
- Secret Chaser: Asuka suspects Shinji is hiding some sort of secret which she intends to figure out.
- Secret Identity: Shinj is Zone Fighter (Ultraman in the remake).
- Sharing a Body: Shinji and Zone Fighter share the former's body.
- Ship Tease: Between Shinji and Asuka. The latter cannot help but be drawn Shinji despite herself.
- Sickening "Crunch!":
- Godzilla produces this sound when he clamps his jaws on Titanosaurus's neck.
- Junior also makes this sound when he he viciously mauls Gaira.
- Suddenly Speaking: It is mentioned that Miki has had a psychic link with Godzilla for decades, in which they can communicate via mental images and emotions. But when Godzilla is about to die from his meltdown?Godzilla: Goodbye, Miki.
- Super Fic: Shinji merges with an alien and gains the powers of a Tokusatsu hero (Zone Fighter or Ultraman, depending on the version).
- Superpower Meltdown: In Chapter 22, Godzilla's nuclear heart fails in the middle of his fight with Zeruel, allowing the Angel to get the upper hand. Junior, who had followed his father to the Geofront, tries to intervene and gets killed as a result. Godzilla subsequently goes on a literal Roaring Rampage of Revenge, pushing his heart into a self-destructive overdrive and entering a burning state similar to his form in Godzilla vs. Destoroyah. Cue a Curb-Stomp Battle and Godzilla's subsequent death from the meltdown.
- Super Serum: As it turns out, Godzilla's cells can be used to temporarily enhance a person's natural abilities. It also has the side effect of increased aggression and a vastly increased libido, as Shinji found out in Chapter 15.
- The Worm That Walks: Destoroyah makes an appearance in Chapter 17.
- This Is Gonna Suck: The narration of chapter ten does this on behalf of Asuka when she decides to attack Godzilla head-on. It takes a moment to break down the strengths of each combatant and concludes that Godzilla is undeniably the superior fighter before capping it off with this little gem:Narration: This will not end well.
- Toku: The genre is adequately represented with Godzilla and his Kaiju friends and foes and Zone Fighter/Ultraman.
- Too Dumb to Live: Desiring to get rid of Godzilla for his constant interference in the Scenario, Gendo came up with the brilliant idea of kidnapping his son and using him as bait...which is beyond suicidal. Godzilla easily stomped over everything that was thrown at him, including the Evas, tearing apart the robots and almost killing their pilots. Gendo not only wasted billions in military equipment and ruined Nerv's reputation but also managed to make his employees mistrust him even more.
- Took a Level in Kindness: Asuka becomes gradually kinder after the real nature of Nerv is exposed and she hooks up with Shinji.
- Tsundere: Asuka liked Shinji but her trauma-induced lack of self-esteem and fright of other people stopped her from expressing her feelings openly. Some characters wondered if she would be capable to open herself up... shortly before the incident with the G-cell serum happened.
- Tunnel King: Anguirus proves to be a skilled burrower.
- Wave-Motion Gun: Godzilla's Spiral Ray is treated like this. It takes considerable energy and time to prepare, but the end result is... explosive. During the fight with Zeruel, he manages to use it to blast through ALL of the Angel's AT-field layers, its shoulder, and finally strikes a distant hillside with enough force to produce a mushroom cloud.
- Wham Episode: Chapter 22. Godzilla dies.
- What Does She See in Him?: Gender Inverted. At one point, Zone Fighter tells Asuka that he has no idea what Shinji sees in her.
- The Worf Barrage: Godzilla is hit with this in Chapter 10. The author notes that the amount of firepower was indeed impressive, but...[The barrage] did precisely jack shit against a creature that has survived maser cannons, lasers, gravity bolts, plasma blasts, spiral missiles, paralyzer missiles, railguns, particle beams, four million volts of electricity coursing through his body, and nuclear weaponry in the megaton range.
- Your Head Asplode: During Operation Kusanagi, Godzilla pulps Unit-02's head with a punch.
