Fanfic / Factory Isolation

Go To

An amusing self indulgent riff off the whole SI craze going on. Especially the PA ones. This one has a decidedly different bent of course. This is just for fun and likely won't be updated often if at all. I'm calling it an SI, but it's not really. I'd probably be too lazy to do half the stuff on here :)

Factory Isolation is a pseudo Self-Insert multi-crossover story in which it focuses on an unnamed survivor (later named Karag) waking up on the world of Factorio.

It can be read on Space Battles and Sufficient Velocity.

Contains examples of:

  • A God I Am Not: Karag sets the matter straight with the average human in the Warhammer world that he is not a god. Aside from being disturbed of being worship, he is concerned about how faith is so integral in Warhammer and that this misdirected worship won't do any favors. So he validates this by offering tributes to the gods of man in the form of building new and very impressive temples and, with the help of Emperor Magnus, making a grand public speech that makes him a servant of the gods of man, and along with honoring the gods of the elves and dwarfs.
  • The Alliance: The Ashen Alliance.
  • Can't Kill You, Still Need You: Karag decides to keep Nessiah alive due to his unfathomable knowledge on magic.
  • Downer Ending: The fate of Erion. Though Karag managed to evacuate most of the Fairies and Unicorns under Mercedes and the Vulcans to his world.
  • Earn Your Title: Karag is given his name from the Warhammer dwarves. In which his name means "volcano" given that he can create volcanoes and for how he blew up their hold and turning it into a volcano to wipe out the Chaos and Orc hordes that were besieging them.
    • Karag's Vulcan that keeps following him around is given the name Ember.
    • Karag gives Angel 367 her name, Fortuna, after being disgusted by her treatment as a test subject without a real name at all.
  • Empty Shell: The Vulcans are, in Karag's words, "listless" since they were minions of Lord Onyx and weren't getting much attention. However, they are eventually developing personalities in the long run under Karag.
  • Evolving Weapon: Karag's dagger is based on the Swords Against Gods and Mercedes' Riblam's crystals. The dagger grow with each kill, and leave wounds to the very soul.
  • Fantasy Kitchen Sink: "Ok, so we got robot people, fish people, fire people, people with wings, people who're short and dig in the earth, ninja, mad scientists, and one angel. Did I miss anyone?"
  • Follow the Leader: The fic is follow by BITERS INCOMING! and A Protector is You.
  • Giving Radio to the Romans: Karag initially gave guns to the Warhammer dwarves he first encounter as gifts of friendship. After they settle in his world, Karag provided them advanced learning materials and other less troubling tech to compensate for the loss of their previous hold. On his second and third visits, he gave the dwarfs radars to help in their mining, cars (which the dwarfs quickly learned the concept of demolition derbies), tanks, and aeroplanes.
    • In one instance, the Orcs managed to make off some of Karag's scraps and manufacture guns. Fortunately, Karag wiped out the entire tribe before they can get any ideas.
  • Heroic BSoD: Karag and most especially Mercedes over their failure to save Ingway's life and preventing Armageddon from happening.
  • I Have Many Names: Karag is also called "Lord Volcano" by the Vulcans, "Karag the Laughing Endbringer" by the High Elves, and the "fire-bringer" by the Chaos Gods.
  • I Owe You My Life: The High Elves pledged their eternal gratitude and alliance to Karag after helping killed off Malekith, the most hated elf among their kind.
  • Inspector Javert: The Special Victims Unit, especially Elliot Stabler, thinks Karag is a criminal after he was mistaken for a murder. They are still keeping tabs on Karag, even if they have to cooperate with the CIA due to Karag's operations in Africa.
  • Killed Off for Real: Malekith, the Seven Magi, and Zouken Matou.
  • Last Stand: Karag's first journey into the Warhammer world ends with him helping a Dwarf hold to defend against a very seemingly endless horde of Chaos and Orcs (which is exacerbated by their common interest in fighting Karag and the dwarfs rather than fighting each other). Ultimately, Karag evacuate the dwarfs to his world while turning the hold into a volcano and wiping out the hordes.
  • Let Us Never Speak of This Again: Karag's quest to discover his true name involves meeting with Mother Summer and Mother Winter. He achieved his quest and he wants the circumstances of how he did it stricken from his memories.
  • Lost Superweapon: The Sword Against Gods. The eponymous weapon is a giant monolith resembling a sword capable of warding away gods but also completely destroying demons and nullifying magic (which also cause unbearable pain to magic users). Karag later have a dagger-version of the Sword as one of his personal weapons.
  • The Magic Versus Technology War: Inevitably comes up whenever Karag visit a fantasy-based world. The most prominent examples are Chaos and Dark Elf sorcerers casting weather manipulations to freeze Karag's turrets and scrambling his radar.
  • Magitek: A joint project between the Warhammer dwarves and elves manage to make a FTL drive based on magical principles, but not dependent on it; Karag described it as a solar sail that can be done without light. Though not the fastest FTL drive, it is incredibly efficient. Its existence causes XCOM scientists pulling their hairs out.
  • Massive Multiplayer Crossover: DC Comics, The Dresden Files, Farscape, Mark of the Ninja, Nasuverse (Fate/Zero), Odin Sphere, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Warhammer, XCOM 2 and Yggdra Union.
  • Masquerade:
    • Karag's activities in the Law & Order universe had him making secret deals with the leaders of African nations while having ninjas keeping them in line and foiling any illegal activities. Generally, the people think he is some kind of warlord.
    • The Ashen Alliance's activity in the XCOM universe was completely unknown to the human population until footage of Mercedes fighting alongside XCOM made the public start asking XCOM some questions.
  • Million Mook March: When Karag faces a very massive Chaos horde during his second visit to the Warhammer world.
Karag: Ok, I have to ask. Seriously, did you depopulate the entire continent?!
Chaos Champion: Chaos calls and we answer! There is no other response to that!
  • Mistaken for Murderer: Karag's first visit to the Law & Order world winds him up being framed for the murder of a prostitute. He managed to clear his innocence through the legal process (namely using his unlimited funds to hire the best lawyer and private investigator).
  • Mugging the Monster:
    • Happens two times to Karag's first visit in the Law & Order world. The first time was a thug who stole his wallet, but turns out empty and tried to get back at him and instead got a shotgun pointed at his head. The second time when a gang tried to jump on him in which it goes very badly on them as Karag was not in a good mood and decide not to leave any witnesses.
    • Happens once again when some thugs, who are hired by the CIA, tries to kidnap Mercedes and they all get a bullet in their heads. After one of their agents got killed, the CIA decide to send three armed masked men to take her and Karag in which it very shortly ends with Mercedes using her Riblam to kill them.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Karag's first jaunt into the Warhammer world in which he unintentionally attract hordes of Orcs and Chaos followers, who are out for his blood, to attack a Dwarf hold. This is also the very reason why the dwarfs now lives in Karag's world.

  • Pocket Dimension: Karag later learned that the planet he lives and the sun are in one. The "stars" are reflections of the light from the sun.
  • Properly Paranoid: Karag has good reasons when he is an enemy of the Chaos Gods and any other powerful entities and their thralls that are out to get him.
  • Rage Against the Heavens: How Karag got himself involved in the world of Yggdra Union and waging war against Asgard and their Seven Magi masters. In which he succeeds and becomes the Angels' new ruler.

  • Screw You, Elves!:
    • When Karag meets the High Elves for the first time and explains to them about the Sword Against the Gods, the elves laugh at him. Karag makes his point to convince them by activating a Sword at max capacity; given to how elves are intrinsically sensitive to magic, they were rendered in absolute writhing agony. This makes the elves start taking him seriously. Although angered of their arrogant treatment, Karag is regretful of what he did.
    • On his encounter with the Wood Elves, they refuse to speak with him and send The Wild Hunt on him. In response, Karag summons a fire elemental, Crackle, on burning the forests of Athel Loren. And after burning nearly the entire forests, he removes the enchantment that kept Athel Loren in stasis and expose it to the outside world.
