"Quote looked around. After looking he saw someone udner a rock. He mnages to lift the rock and he saw a guy he never saw before. It was Mr. Vacan."
—The first line of the story

Doukutsu Days is a Cave Story fanfic written by Mr. Vacan. It is stated by the author himself to be both a Troll Fic and a Cave Story analogue of My Immortal.

A sequel, Doukutsu Days 2: Electric Boogaloo was later made, followed by Doukutsu Days 3: The Final Revenge, the final entry in the series.

This fanfic series contains examples of:

  • All Just a Dream: The entire trilogy is revealed to be a coma-induced fantasy of Mr. Vacan, or so it seems.
  • Anti-Climax: The final antagonist ultimately dies of a heart attack.
  • Author Avatar: Mr. Vacan, who is mostly a bemused bystander, and The Load, come the sequel.
    • Come The Final Revenge, his Mary Sue-ness seems to gone up to the point of him re-creating the entire universe.
  • Big Damn Heroes: When Curly, Quote and Mr. Vacan fight the ugly barnacle powered by Ballos, various friendly characters show up all at once to help them fight. And then Curly tells them to leave.
  • Big Eater: Quote, after falling out with Curly. He soon becomes bloated and round like a Deleet.
  • Bishie Sparkle: When Mr. Vacan enters the sunlight of his kingdom, his body sparkles, and Santa and Mahin try to kill him, believing he turned into a vampire. It turns out that diamonds floating in the sky were sticking to his body.
  • Brick Joke: Swiper appears in The Final Revenge to fire a Spirit Bomb, which he says will take 6 chapters to fully charge. 6 chapters later...
  • Catchphrase: The Gunsmith Hermit's: "Where's me Polar Star?!"
  • Cerebus Syndrome: Slightly from the first to the second, and even more from the second to the third. The series that once featured Quote getting fat from eating too much culminates in Ballos rising once again to wreak havoc, not too long after the universe had to be restored from a state of non-existence.
  • Check, Please!: Said by Kanpachi, at Santa's restaurant.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: The Chinfish that gets hit by a rock in the Plantation? He pilots the robotic Rob Schneider.
  • Continuity Nod: From Days to Electric Boogaloo: Quote's affinity for Lady Gaga songs. Plenty of subtle nods to the game occur in addition:
    • The room named Gum from Grasstown becomes Jenka's new home.
    • Misery steals a blade "from pixies in the outer walls", presumably referring to the Little family.
    • To make a fishing rod, Quote uses the tow rope that was used in the game's Brutal Bonus Level.
    • A subversion occurs when naming various flowers. Mentioned among the list are red flowers, an important plot device in the game. Mr. Vacan realizes something amiss in the list... purple flowers.
      • The Final Revenge is full of references to its two predecessors: Using Ran Ran Ruu to teleport, Trollestia singing Trololo, Quote and Curly watching Tekken Toppo Gummy Lagoon, etc.
  • Crack Fic
  • Demonic Possession: Ma Pignon gets possessed by Pooh Black. The resulting entity is called Pooh Pignon.
  • Department of Redundancy Department: Oftentimes, something will be described in third-person narrative, and is immediately followed by a character saying the exact same thing.
"He [Mr. Vacan] then wumdered if he could ghost-phast right through the dror.
"I wumder if I could ghost-phast right through the dror." he propositioned.
  • Kill Em All: Occurs at the ending of Electric Boogaloo, courtesy of The Ugly Barnacle.
  • Misery, I Am Your Uncle: Which is actually obvious.
  • Oddly Named Sequel 2: Electric Boogaloo: The second installment title.
  • Our Ghosts Are Different: Mr. Vacan appears as a ghost in Electric Boogaloo, due to seemingly dying at the end of the first story. He takes the form of a Bedsheet Ghost that can hold dishes and leak ectoplasm sweat.
  • Quizzical Tilt: "Mr. Vadan tilted his head 3 degress."
  • Rouge Angles of Satin
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Said verbatim by Misery; Balrog had something urgent to tell Misery: Ballos had become evil.
  • Shout-Out: Quote: "Who else will I have ice cream with?"
  • Sir Swearsalot: Mahin can seemingly never go a sentence without a Cluster F-Bomb.
  • Spirit Advisor: Queen Princess Trollestia becomes an intangible voice in the third volume, only audible to Mr. Vacan. Of course, she spends more time being facetious than providing advice.
  • Suddenly Speaking: "Quote was able to talk because he found out how to tlak."
  • Troll Fic: Admitted by the author.
  • Trouser Space: During a party on the Outer Wall, Quote and Curly find a place to get some privacy. When they're alone, Quote unzips his pants to reveal... an ice cream sundae, which he and Curly eat.
  • "Where Are They Now?" Epilogue: The ending of the first installment.
