Dating What Daddy Hates (Coeur Al'Aran) (Fanfic)
Cover art by Terakali
"Weiss needed a significant other for a meeting between her father and some powerful business people. Sun needed a way to convince Blake to go with him to the school dance. Luckily, Blake has a solution to both problems. Sun pretending to be Weiss' boyfriend wasn't what he or Weiss would have ideally wanted, but how hard could it be? It's not like there were any feelings involved."
— Official plot summary

Dating What Daddy Hates is a RWBY fanfiction written by Coeur Al'Aran, which is available to read on FanFiction.Net here.

The fic focuses on the logistics of romantically pairing Weiss Schnee and Sun Wukong, whom enter an initially-fake relationship due to Weiss needing a fake suitor to present to her father in order to avoid being married off and due to Blake wanting to get Sun's attention off her back.

This work contains examples of:

  • Abusive Parents:
    • Jacques, not entirely unlike his canon self, was emotionally distant to his children for as long as they can remember, leaving them to spend the majority of their time learning from the best tutors their money could buy instead of from their father, and after they've grown out of childhood, he uses his children far more like employees and assets than as his children. He also strikes Weiss on the cheek over breakfast just for a clear if polite verbal slight.
    • Millennia Metelia, though not as hostile in demeanor as Jacques, is smothering, yet very controlling and domineering, towards her son Azure.
  • All Girls Want Bad Boys: Numerous people who see Sun and don't know him assume based on the rugged, handsome, well-built, bare-chested sight of him that he's the "bad boy" type and is probably connected to the White Fang. Several beach-going girls take an interest in the sight of him, and some people assume that this trope is the reason why Weiss is dating him.
  • Bros Before Hoes: This trope is one of the reasons Weiss chooses Sun to be her fake boyfriend — they both know that Neptune is interested in Weiss, so a Nice Guy like Sun won't dare hurt Neptune's feelings by making a real move on Weiss. That is, until Neptune starts to notice Sun and Weiss have real chemistry and actively encourages Sun to give it a shot.
  • Classical Anti-Hero: Weiss's main enemy in this story isn't external in the forms of Jacques or the Metelias, but internal, as she is Her Own Worst Enemy in her doublethink of feeling that she needs to redeem her family's name from her father's actions while also wanting to be a Huntress at the same time without acknowledging that the two aspirations aren't compatible with each-other, plus her growing feelings for Sun.
  • Contrasting New Love Interest: Weiss and Sun, whom start out romantically interested in Neptune and Blake respectively like their canon selves, are ultimately the fic's main pairing. Whereas Neptune is a human with a water theme and is prone to flaking and slight social shallowness, his teammate Sun is a Faunus with a sun theme and he's more reliably integrous and emotionally intelligent. Blake is a brooding, secretive and closed-off Faunus with black hair, whereas Weiss is a white-haired, abrasive and outspoken human — Weiss even hails from a family whom have an infamously bad image among Faunus for the SDC's role in perpetuating Faunus workplace abuses, in stark contrast to Blake's past as a deserter from an extremist Faunus rights organization.
  • Cool, but Inefficient: Weiss's SDC-chosen fiance Azure is very muscular, but only in the sense that he's exercised to attain the look rather than the stamina. During a hike through the woods, Weiss — who is a Squishy Wizard by Huntress standards — doesn't break a sweat while carrying both hers and Azure's backpacks, while Azure becomes exhausted quickly.
  • Dating What Daddy Hates: Per the trope and the fic sharing the same name, Jacques is not happy that Weiss is dating Sun. While Jacques personally has no problem with Sun being a Faunus, since he's not actively racist himself even if he's exploiting a racism-steeped institution, Jacques has every problem with his heiress having as her significant other a man who has no connections that could heighten the Schnee family's influence when Jacques himself is attempting to negotiate an arranged marriage with Weiss for the sake of business.
  • Deconstruction Fic: In a secondary sense, the fic points out the numerous ways in which Weiss's canon ambitions of taking over the SDC and redeeming it of Jacques' business practices logically just won't work the way she wants them to. For one thing, Weiss would need to actually devote the necessary vast majority of her time, energy and socialization into developing her business acumen, in order to both convince Jacques to pass the SDC on to her and to run the company competently enough to achieve those aims; things which she hasn't done, and which her other dream which she already has prioritized over the SDC and committed herself to instead (becoming a Huntress and being free of Jacques outside of Atlas) realistically conflicts with. For another thing, short of Weiss committing patricide or something else unfortunate happening to Jacques; Jacques, whether or not he actually does stand down and hand the board chair over to Weiss, will officially or unofficially still hold plenty of power and sway over the SDC's board of directors for about as long as he lives during the next several decades, and he'll veto any and all reforms that Weiss attempts to make if they conflict in the slightest with his own antithetical wishes for the company — and Weiss, in a scenario based on this where she does inherit the SDC, will never have the freedom from him that she sought out in the first place since she'll be on the board of directors that he is irrevocably connected to. Nevermind the chances that the board of directors who've grown greedy on Jacques' cruel but efficient business management might oust her if her own agenda's effects on profits dissatisfy them too much. Sun, Winter, Yang and even Jacques himself all tell Weiss that if she really wants to become a Huntress or if she really wants to redeem her family's name or get away from Jacques for good, then she's better off renouncing her heirhood and giving up on the SDC in order to pour her efforts into her other, more productive pursuits.
  • Doublethink: More than one of the people around Weiss point out that by aspiring to inherit and redeem the SDC while also aspiring to leave Jacques' influence and become a Huntress, she's unwittingly trying to have her cake and eat it too, and it's only a matter of time until she'll have to choose one dream over the other.
  • Even the Loving Hero Has Hated Ones: "Hate" might be a slightly strong word, but Sun, for all that he's lovable and friendly like in canon, inwardly is not endeared to either Jacques or the Metelia parents, on top of dismissing the White Fang as a "bunch of creeps" like his canon self would.
  • Her Own Worst Enemy: Arguably the biggest antagonist to Weiss herself comes not from the Metelias' nor Jacques' plans to marry her off — as it's made clear that both can pressure her but can't actually force her into an arranged marriage — but from herself, with her grave reluctance to give up on her heirhood over the SDC and her own sense of obligation to redeem the company that her father tarnished without her, even as it becomes increasingly undeniable that those aims simply aren't compatible with her happiness and her career as a Huntress-in-training.
  • Ice King: If there's one aspect of his father-in-law Nicholas Schnee's legacy that Jacques more than lives up to, it's the family's ice motif. Jacques isn't cruel for cruelty's sake, but he's a completely ruthless and company-focused businessman to everyone, including his own children. His daughters bitterly observe that he's never acted like a parent so much as an employer to all his children for their entire lives. Even when Jacques is dressed casually during the outing at the Metelias' beach resort, Weiss can't find anything to mentally compare the sight to except for an ice sculpture.
  • Interclass Friendship: Sun Wukong, a former street rat from Vacuo, ends up getting on swimmingly with Azure Metelia, a rich young heir, even though they're technically competing for Weiss's hand due to Azure's and Weiss's parents' machinations and Weiss's efforts to escape them.
  • Internal Reformist: Deconstructed. Weiss's canon desire to redeem her family's name of the stain that Jacques' ruthless business practices have splashed on it is completely dismantled when her loved ones point out that Jacques, who does every morally-dubious thing that he does with the SDC to keep it profitable above all else, is presumably going to still be sitting on the board of directors for the next few decades, and he'll just reverse any company reforms Weiss attempts to make that'll cause the slightest dent in their profits, plus he's proven very willing to threaten Weiss with disinheritance for the smallest SDC-related defiances. Yang suggests that Weiss should give up on reforming the SDC and instead direct her power and influence as a Schnee and singer towards setting up other, more benevolent causes and organizations.
  • Jerkass Has a Point:
    • Weiss thinks she was basically this trope when she was chafing at Ruby being made team leader during the events of Volume 1. While she thinks in hindsight that she was indeed too harsh and unforgiving about it, she still believes she wasn't in the wrong for questioning the wisdom in a fifteen-year-old Grade Skipper being made leader of a Beacon team before the point where Ruby demonstrated her willingness to take her leadership seriously and make up for the two years she skipped.
    • As cold and harsh as he is about it, Jacques scathingly calls Weiss out on her doublethinking of both wanting to inherit and redeem the SDC while also wanting to spend her time and energy on training to be a Huntress instead of putting any of the necessary business training in to the former aspiration.
  • Make an Example of Them: Weiss mentions that Jacques prefers to come down on employees' mistakes mercilessly to cow every else to the point where they don't dare get sloppy, in contrast to how Nicholas Schnee before him believed that accepting and then learning from mistakes was more important.
  • Must Make Amends: Winter has subtle shades of this towards Weiss. She admits she's ashamed that she put pursuing her dream of joining the military ahead of being there to give Weiss a healthy support or even considering how her renouncing her own heirhood and shirking all of it onto Weiss would detrimentally affect the latter. When Winter notices Sun and Weiss are developing real feelings towards each-other, Winter is borderline-adamant in making sure Weiss makes the right choice not for others but for herself.
  • Nature Lover: Azure has an intimate passion and familiarity with his family's island resort's local ecology.
  • Nice, Mean, and In-Between: The Metelia family. Azure (Nice) is a soft and mellow young man who doesn't want to stand up to his parents, and he ends up making friends with Sun despite being Weiss's prospective groom. Martin (Inbetween) is less friendly and tolerant than Azure, but he's still more reasonable and less mean-spirited than Millennia (Mean), who is even more openly disdainful of both Sun and of Weiss not wanting to be a housewife in general.
  • The One Thing I Don't Hate About You: Weiss thinks to herself that of all her father's traits and ethos, "a Schnee is always calm and in control" is one of the very few that she doesn't hate in him and actively tries to follow herself.
  • “The Reason You Suck” Speech: Jacques, harsh bastard that he is about it, accurately calls Weiss out on the flaws and self-contradictions in her insistence on inheriting the SDC to become an Internal Reformist while showing none of the dedication that would indicate she really wants to make that dream a reality:
Jacques: If you truly do not want to do this, say so. I will strip the position of heiress from you and you will be free to pursue whatever goals you wish.
    Weiss: [disturbed] N-No.
Jacques: No? You put me in a difficult spot, Weiss. What is it you want? You want to remain heiress but have no responsibility and galivant off in Vale fighting the Grimm? You want to take over after me, but wish to put no effort into it? [scoffs] You act as though it is I who holds you back, when the truth is that you are the one who desires this position. The only one you are rebelling against is yourself, hence why your recent actions are the height of immaturity. And is that even fair to your brother who does wish to be heir, and who does wish to be a part of the company? Who wants to prove himself? Is it fair to constantly deny him that chance because his older sister – who runs around having her own fun – still wants to keep the power and the influence?
    Weiss: That's not…
Jacques: It's not what, Weiss? Not fair? Tell me how it isn't fair. Tell me how I am asking too much in asking you to at least act like the future leader of the Schnee Dust Corporation that you claim to be.
  • Secret-Keeper: Winter is quite aware that Weiss and Sun's relationship is a ruse to combat Jacques' plans to marry Weiss off, and she maintains it.
  • Shared Family Quirks: Expressing surprise with a simple arched eyebrow apparently runs in the Schnee family.
  • Take That!: Remnant apparently has anti-vaxxers, to Weiss's derision.
