Danny Phantom Vs American Dragon Jake Long: The Novelization (Fanfic)
Whoever wins, someone's childhood dies…

Danny Phantom vs American Dragon: Jake Long: The Novelization is a crossover fanfiction by NeoMark of Danny Phantom and American Dragon: Jake Long, based on the DEATH BATTLE! episode of the same name.

Aligning himself with the Dark Dragon, Vlad Plasmius uses a staff that pits the two heroes against each other. While trying to stop him, Danny and Jake become hostile and competitive with each other due to the spell. Now the two must work together to stop him and the Dark Dragon's return.

Sequels involving Kim Possible, Stitch, and Ladybug, should any of them appear on Death Battle, were promised.

Can be read here.

A direct sequel based on the DBX episode Ben 10 vs Danny Phantom was released and can be found here here.

This story provides examples of:

  • 100% Heroism Rating: All the ghosts in the Far Frozen idolize Danny. Jake envies him for it.
  • Abhorrent Admirer:
    • Tucker is this to Trixie and Spud is this to Jazz since neither girl is interested in them. Spud gives up when he remembers he's with Stacey while Trixie gives Tucker a fake phone number just before he goes back to Amity Park.
    • Vlad gains two in a pair of ugly old witches who become attracted to his human form. He ends up fleeing from them since he's too low on power to change into his ghost form and his Ghost Vultures refuse to help him.
    • At Magus Bazaar, Danny encounters a harpy who’s just as rude and snobby as Paulina that flirts with him. He’s relieved when Jake drives her away.
  • Achilles' Heel: Dragons have two; a weak point behind their left ear and Sphinx Hair, with the Dark Dragon being the only exception to the latter.
  • Actually Pretty Funny: Jake warns Danny that if Sam continues to disrespect him, he's going to glue her hair to the pillow. It takes a moment, but Danny ends up finding the idea funny.
  • Adaptation Expansion: This takes the fight from Death Battle and expands on it, giving it backstory for why Danny and Jake are willing to try and kill each other, and saving Jake's life.
  • Aesop Amnesia: Having learned nothing from his disastrous plan to free Vortex, Vlad frees the Dark Dragon, only to be betrayed and defeated by him.
  • Alien Blood: Green ectoplasm is briefly shown flying out when Jake's dragon claws slash at Danny.
  • Alternate Species Counterpart: At Magus Bazaar, Danny meets a harpy who’s just as obnoxious and arrogant as Paulina and hits on him. He’s thankful to Jake for chasing her away.
  • Annoying Younger Sibling: Jake admits Haley can be a bit of a pain, and her unreciprocated crush on Danny isn't something he approves of.
  • Anything You Can Do, I Can Do Better: Jake boasts this word for word when he summons his clones to counter Danny's. He's partially right as his clones do get the upper hand against Danny's, although Danny ultimately comes out as the stronger combatant in the end.
  • Bad Boss: The Dark Dragon is not a pleasant guy to work for as he’s very bossy, demanding, overbearing, and occasionally threatening toward Vlad Plasmius, Eli Pandarus, and the Fright Knight.
  • Bash Brothers: Jake and Danny become this as they grow to respect each other’s skills in battle by fighting bad guys together.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Shackles Jack doesn't want to be imprisoned in the Mugwomp Cup again. Danny agrees since he traps the evil Civil War ghosts in the Fenton Thermos instead.
  • Berserk Button: Jake has two: anyone hurting his little sister Haley and bringing harm to dragons, so he doesn’t take it well when Prince Aragon reveals his amulet was made with the blood of a powerful dragon.
  • Big Bad Duumvirate: Vlad works alongside Eli Pandarus and the Fright Knight to set the Dark Dragon free.
  • Big Bad Wannabe: Huntsboy 88 and 89 are looked down on by Jake since, despite having access to the entire Huntsclan's weaponry, they're too incompetent and immature to be considered threats.
  • Big Brother Instinct: After Jake brings up how he's protective of Haley, Danny tells him about Danielle and how he wants to find her and make sure she's safe. Jake describes this trope to Danny with how they're willing to risk anything for their little sisters.
  • Big "NO!": Both Danny and Jake anticipate this as the Dark Dragon is defeated and even mime along with it.
  • Birds of a Feather: Jake and Danny bond over their mutual hardships from their superhero duties and having to deal with dimwitted bullies on a regular basis.
  • Boastful Rap: Jake's Trash Talk to Danny takes the form of this. Danny returns fire while overshadowing him.
  • Boisterous Weakling: Huntsboy 88 and 89 talk big but completely fail to back it up as they're easily intimidated by genuine threats like Shackles Jack.
  • Bond One-Liner: Danny gives one after he captures Jake's ghost in the Fenton Thermos during their first fight.
    Danny: Time's up, pal!
  • Boomerang Bigot: The Huntsman becomes one of the magical creatures he hates so much when he's turned into a ghost after Rose destroys the Huntsclan.
  • Breath Weapon: As befitting a dragon, Jake breathes fire. Spud openly says his fire is strong enough to destroy a house and blast apart stone with force equal to at least 31 tons of TNT. Unfortunately for him, his opponent Danny can tank a ghost-dragon breath blast magnitudes more powerful than Jake's own fire breath.
  • Brought Down to Normal:
    • At the end of the story, Vlad is too low on power to transform into his ghost form and is forced to run away from two infatuated ugly witch hags that chase him.
    • Without his magical amulet, Prince Aragon poses no threat to Danny and Jake.
  • Brutal Honesty: Jake doesn't bother sugarcoating to Danny how pathetic Huntsboys 88 and 89 are.
  • Bully Hunter: Jake and Danny don't get along at first but neither of them can stand a bully and defend each other from Dash and Brad.
  • Bullying a Dragon: Sam goes through this twice.
    • She tries to give Jake Long the “If You Ever Do Anything To Hurt Him” speech because she doesn't trust him around Danny, but Jake isn't intimidated because there's not a lot she can do to physically hurt him, considering that she's a normal human while he's a dragon.
    • She makes the mistake of provoking some pixies. Lao Shi orders her to eventually apologize to them or things will get worse for her.
  • Butt-Monkey: Tucker goes through some unfortunate stuff during the story. He's kidnapped, his attraction to Trixie is unreciprocated, has his PDA traded away without his consent, and just when he thinks he got Trixie's number, he finds as soon as he gets back to Amity Park she wrote “1-800-YOU-WISH”.
  • By the Power of Grayskull!: Both the main characters have theirs. Though they're more like catchphrases since the two can transform without saying them.
    Both: I'm Going Ghost!/Dragon Up!
  • The Cavalry Arrives Late: Kim and Ron arrive in New York right after Danny and Jake have managed to seal the Dark Dragon away again.
  • Celeb Crush: Danny has a massive one on Kim Possible, which Jake learns about and makes fun of him for it.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl:
    • Sam is this to Danny as she doesn't like any girl getting close to him but makes an exception for Haley since she's too young for him.
    • Haley, meanwhile, understands why Danny would have a crush on Kim Possible but it doesn't mean she has to like it.
  • Combat Pragmatist:
    • The Fright Knight doesn't mind taking out Lao Shi with a cheap shot while he's distracted by fighting Vlad.
    • During their first fight, Danny turns invisible just before Jake destroys his duplicates so he can sneak up on Jake and overshadow him.
  • Combo Platter Powers: Danny's powerset is more varied than Jake's and is a factor in his win as it allows him to match or directly counter Jake's own abilities.
  • Comedic Underwear Exposure: Danny gets back at Brad Morton for pushing him and harassing Jake by making his pants intangible, exposing his pink underwear with red teddy bear prints all over, which makes everyone at the skatepark laugh at him.
  • Commonality Connection: One thing Jake and Tucker bond over is their mutual love of talking Jive Turkey by using hip-hop slang.
  • Continuity Nod: This story takes place after the end of American Dragon: Jake Long and after the penultimate episode of Danny Phantom, so aspects are brought up from both.
    • Jonathan is aware of his children's abilities.
    • The Huntsclan destroyed by Rose's wish in "Homecoming" became ghosts.
  • Corrupted Character Copy: Both Dash Baxter and Brad Morton are this of Flash Thompson. They are also Dumb Blonde Jerk Jocks that bully the main character (and in Dash's case, idolize his superhero alter ego) but lack Flash's redeeming qualities such as his bravery and Hidden Heart of Gold, as well as a Freudian Excuse for their behavior, and just come off as rude jerks with enormous egos who enjoy picking on others.
  • Cowardly Lion: Haley is at first scared of Shackles Jack’s gang since she’s never seen ghosts before but musters enough courage to guard two ghosts that Danny subdued.
  • Crime of Self-Defense: Sam scolds Jake for using his powers to trip Dash when he was threatening him but Jake doesn't care and just fires back that it was self-defense.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: The Dark Dragon easily beats Vlad Plasmius, the Fright Knight, and Eli Pandarus upon being freed.
  • Cute Monster Girl: Veronica possesses the upper body of an attractive girl that Tucker takes notice of, and the lower body of a spider that makes him lose interest.
  • David Versus Goliath: Jake towers over Danny in his dragon form, and like David, Danny wins.
  • Demonic Possession: Overshadowing allows Danny to enter and take control of people or items. He uses this ability to great effect against his opponent in the fight's climax, which is noted to be an advantage against Jake since the American Dragon has no actual counter or immunity to possession.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Huntsboys 88 and 89 release Shackles Jack's gang under the assumption the ghosts would be grateful enough to obey them.
  • Dirty Coward:
    • Huntsboys 88 and 89 act cocky when they think they have the upper hand but run away screaming when Shackles Jack's gang turns on them immediately.
    • The ghost vultures hide from the Dark Dragon in a dumpster and decide to stay there when a powerless Vlad is pursued by two ugly witch hags who are interested in him.
  • Disappointed by the Motive: Lao Shi is NOT amused when Vlad admits he's helping the dragon for treasure and to take Maddie from Jack.
  • Does Not Like Magic: Danny feels uncomfortable while at the Magus Bazaar because he’s never been to a place where mythical creatures can walk so freely out in the open and is not used to dealing with magic stuff outside of fairy tale books, plus he lives in a house full of tech that he uses to fight ghosts and has a bad track record when it comes to magic thanks to his experiences with ghost dragons, the Jackass Genie Desiree, the Fright Knight, and the Reality Gauntlet.
  • Dude, Where's My Respect?: Jake gets a little jealous when he learns how much the Far Frozen idolizes Danny.
  • Dumb Blonde: Both Dash Baxter and Brad Morton have blonde hair and are Dumb Jocks who got held back in school, twice in Brad's case.
  • Dumb Jock: Dash Baxter and Brad Morton both got held back in school, twice in Brad's case.
  • Dumb Muscle: Dash and Brad are very muscular athletes but dumb enough to repeat their school year, twice for Brad. Overlaps with Dumb Jock.
  • Dumbass Has a Point: While not really dumb, just clueless, Danny’s obliviousness toward Haley’s infatuation for him is understandable since she’s only a kid so he wouldn’t expect her to have romantic feelings for anyone. Also, it wouldn’t matter even if he did notice her crush on him since he’d never be interested in someone as young as her.
  • Everyone Can See It: Danny is the only one who doesn't notice Haley's obvious crush on him.
  • Even Evil Has Standards:
    • Eli Pandarus decides that teaming up with Vlad Plasmius and the Fright Knight isn’t worth it anymore since their plan to free the Dark Dragon backfired spectacularly and got his wand broken, so he vows to never work with them again.
    • The Ghost Vultures might work for Vlad but even they have their limits with him since they’re fine with letting the temporarily powerless Vlad fend for himself when two lovesick ugly witch hags chase him.
  • Everyone Has Standards:
    • Danny prefers not to use his powers on normal humans but makes a serious exception for jerks like Brad Morton by making his pants intangible to expose his Goofy Print Underwear, thus humiliating him at the skatepark.
    • Danny might see it as his duty to capture ghosts but he refuses to let Fu Dog use the Fenton Thermos to get rid of a banshee that he owes 20 large to.
    • Despite his rough relationship with Jake, Danny keeps the Fenton Thermos away from him since it triggers his Trauma Button.
    • While Hayley still likes Danny, she eventually accepts that she doesn’t have a chance with him, especially given his obvious crush on Kim Possible.
    • Sam's parents are elitist snobs but, according to her, Eli Pandarus is such “a greedy jerk” even they “aren't too crazy for him”. And she says that before learning he's a villain.
    • Sam refrains from acting like her usual jealous self around Haley, seeing as she's a small girl, as well as a dragon whose grandfather is present.
    • Tucker usually flirts with any pretty girl he meets but loses interest in Veronica upon finding out she's half-spider.
  • Evil Is Not a Toy:
    • Lao Shi doesn't believe Vlad's plan to control the Dark Dragon will work, and he doesn't even know what Vlad's plan is. He's proven right.
    • Shackles Jack and his gang are released by Huntsboys 88 and 89, but quickly turn on the duo, who had no plan if the ghosts refused to obey them.
  • Evil Is Petty: Lao Shi outright calls Vlad this when the latter reveals he's willing to help the Dark Dragon just to satisfy his greed and fixation with Maddie.
  • Exact Words:
    • The Dark Dragon uses this to justify not honoring his deal with Vlad by pointing out that Danny and Jake were technically the ones who set him free, not Vlad.
    • Shackles Jack refuses to be imprisoned in the Mugwomp Cup again. Danny agrees so he traps him and his gang in the Fenton Thermos instead.
  • Fangirl: Haley becomes one to Danny after being impressed by him while helping him and Jake deal with the Dark Dragon.
  • Fantastic Racism:
    • Even in death, the Huntsman still hates magical creatures despite becoming one.
    • Frostbite and his tribe don't like dragons since they're creatures of fire while his tribe are creatures of ice, not helped by the fact they're being harassed by Prince Aragon, who can turn into a dragon. Downplayed as they still let Jake into their village when Danny vouches for him.
    • The Dark Dragon REALLY hates humans and plans to raze all their cities to the ground.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: Their experiences turn Danny Phantom and Jake Long from reluctant allies to good friends.
  • Fire/Ice Duo: Danny and Jake form one since Danny has ice powers while Jake has a fire breath attack due to his dragon heritage.
  • Foil: Danny and Jake are both teenagers who take normally imaginative forms to combat evil. However, while Jake defends magical beings from humans, Danny uses his ghost powers to protect humans from various spirits.
  • Fragile Speedster: Downplayed as Jake is only fragile in comparison to Danny. While he can shrug off being tossed through a solid steel wall, it only takes one charged ecto beam from Danny to kill Jake.
  • Friendly Rivalry: Danny and Jake become competitive but are ultimately still friends in the end.
  • From Bad to Worse: After Shackles Jack and his gang are released, the Fright Knight shows up, and the spell that makes Jake and Danny want to kill each other gets stronger.
  • The Gadfly: Trixie gives Tucker a fake phone number before he leaves and admits she wishes she could see the look on his face when he realizes it.
  • Genius Ditz: Jake’s best friend Spud may act like The Stoner skate rat but he’s a wiz with computers and is observant enough to accurately deduce that Jake’s fire breath hits with a force equal to at least 31 tons of TNT.
  • Glass Cannon: Jake is a good fighter who can easily destroy a house or blast apart stone with his fire breath. However, it only takes one super ecto blast from Danny to completely disintegrate his body.
  • Gonk: Danny and Jake find Prince Aragon’s dragon form far more appealing than his ghost form.
  • Goofy Print Underwear: Danny gets back at Brad Morton for pushing him and harassing Jake by making this pants intangible so everyone at the skate park will laugh at his pink underwear with red teddy bear prints all over.
  • Greed: Part of Vlad's motivation for freeing the Dark Dragon is the promise of wealth.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: Both Danny and Jake are half-human, half-supernatural beings (ghost in Danny's case and dragon for Jake).
  • Hand Blast: Danny's “Ghost Ray” is a blast of ectoplasmic energy that has similar aspects to a laser beam, though he can also fire them from his eyes, fingers, and backside.
  • Harmless Villain: Danny and Team Dragon see Huntsboys 88 and 89 are about as non-threatening as the Box Ghost.
  • Hate Plague: The spell cast on Danny and Jake makes them develop a murderous dislike towards each other.
  • Held Back in School: Danny considers Brad even dumber than Dash since he got held back twice in school instead of just once.
  • Henshin Hero: While Danny and Jake have powers in their human forms, both teens need to transform into their supernatural forms to gain the full benefits.
  • Heroic Willpower: How Jake is able to fight off Danny’s attempt at overshadowing him again since his experience in their first battle.
  • Hopeless Suitor: Haley has a huge crush on Danny, who is oblivious to her feelings and she's too young for him to notice in any case.
  • How the Mighty Have Fallen: Lampshaded by Jake when he sees the Huntsman's Villain Decay.
  • Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: Jake and his little sister Haley.
  • An Ice Person: Danny and the Far Frozen use ice-based powers, which contrasts with Jake's fire.
  • Identical Twin ID Tag: When Sarah and Kara wash out the hair dye they've been using and such, Kara asks her sister why they thought it was a good idea, and she lampshades that it was to make it easier for people to identify them.
  • Ignored Expert: Lao Shi's warning that Vlad can't control the Dark Dragon is proven true when he turns out to be immune to Sphinx Hair and Soul Shredder.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal:
    • Danny admits to Jake that he wishes he never got ghost powers and misses being a regular kid with only mundane problems to deal with like homework and bullies because of the large amount of danger and stress that come from being half-ghost and needing to protect his town.
    • A lot of the time, Jake would rather be a normal teenager, as his responsibilities as the American Dragon tend to keep him from having a normal life and hanging out with his friends.
  • Improbable Weapon User: To capture ghosts, Danny uses the Fenton Thermos, a thermos enhanced with technology by his parents, to imprison ghosts on the fly, and this can even work on himself if he's unlucky enough. Danny uses it to capture Jake's ghost after vaporising the American Dragon's body. Danny later uses the Fenton Thermos to imprison Shackles Jack and his ghost gang.
  • Instant Turn-Off: Tucker loses interest in Veronica after seeing her spider legs.
  • Intangibility: Thanks to his ghost powers, Danny can do this to avoid attacks of earthly origin, though similar ghost powers can still affect him. However, this proved less than effective against Jake, who can interact with and attack ghosts.
  • Invisibility: Danny's invisibility proved to be an advantage as Jake couldn't detect him even with the Eye of the Dragon.
  • It Only Works Once:
    • Vlad attempts to put Danny and Jake under the spell again once it's broken, only for it to fail. He's told too late that the spell very rarely affects the same two people twice.
    • Danny tries to overshadow Jake in their rematch like he did in their first fight but it fails because Jake expects it, so he’s able to fight it off through sheer willpower.
  • Jerk Jock: Danny and Jake help each other humiliate their respective bullies, Dash Baxter and Brad Morton.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold:
    • Jake is cocky, slightly rebellious, vain, and often shirks his responsibilities. However, he's ultimately caring, loyal, and brave.
    • At times, Lao-Shi can be a harsh and disciplinarian taskmaster, especially towards Jake, but only because he knows the challenges his grandson will face. He's also shown to have a caring side, especially to his family and Fu Dog.
    • Fu's a chronic gambler, womanizer, and full of obnoxious puns and one-liners. That said, he's a devoted member of the team and always there to provide Jake with some emotional support and advice.
  • Jerkass Has a Point:
    • His rivalry with Danny aside, Jake is right to disapprove of Haley's crush on Danny as she's too young to date and Danny wouldn't be interested in her anyway even if he did notice her feelings because she's too young for him, plus he lives too far away for a relationship to work.
    • Jake is right to call Dash and the A-Listers out on their immaturity for thinking it's funny to throw food at Danny.
    • Jake points out to Sam that he had every right to use his powers for self-defense since Dash was threatening to beat him up.
    • When Sam tries to give Jake an “If You Ever Do Anything To Hurt Him” speech because she doesn't trust him around Danny, Jake mockingly reminds her she’s not much of a threat to him since she’s just a regular human while he’s a superpowered magical dragon.
    • Sam points out to Team Phantom that she has no reason to be jealous of Haley Long for liking Danny since he’d clearly never be interested in someone as young as her.
  • Jive Turkey: Jake and Trixie mainly talk in street slang, much to Team Phantom’s annoyance (except for Tucker who also likes to use street lingo).
  • Kamehame Hadoken: Danny has used this super ecto-blast that disintegrated a skeleton ghost and part of a mini-golf course. At the end of his first battle with Jake Long, he even does the hand motions of the trope before firing off the blast to completely disintegrate Jake's physical body.
  • Kid Hero: Both Danny and Jake are 14-year old teenagers who defend the world from supernatural threats.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: At the end of the story after the Dark Dragon incident turned into a complete disaster, Eli Pandarus decides to never team up with Vlad or the Fright Knight ever again.
  • Kryptonite Factor: Dragons are vulnerable to Sphinx Hair and have a weakness behind their left ear where a clean strike can result in a kill. However, the Dark Dragon is immune to the former.
  • Kung-Fu Wizard: Lao Shi is skilled at magic and an expert martial artist good enough to beat Vlad Plasmius in a fight.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Danny grants Shackles Jack's wish of never being trapped in the Mugwomp Cup again by imprisoning him and his gang in the Fenton Thermos instead.
  • Legacy Character: Jake is an interesting aspect; he is the latest in a long line of mystic defenders of magical beings. However, since his mom, the non-dragon daughter of the last dragon defender moved to America, Jake is officially the first American dragon, thus the title.
  • Long-Distance Relationship: Since this takes place after the series finale, Jake and Rose are officially together but she is still living in Hong Kong with her family.
  • Loophole Abuse: The Dark Dragon's deal with Vlad is that he would reward him with either treasure or power if Vlad set him free with the skull of a dragon the Dark Dragon once killed that has magic. Vlad wasted that magic in an attempt to get rid of Danny and Jake, but their intervention allowed the Dark Dragon to break free. Since technically Danny and Jake were the ones to set him free, the Dark Dragon says that he doesn't owe Vlad at all. Vlad argues it is a technicality, but the Dark Dragon ignores him.
  • Magic Versus Science: This aspect is expanded a bit from the Death Battle episode. Due to Danny getting his powers via science and Jake being descended from a race that uses magic, their reactions to things common to the other are established. Jake expresses a level of discomfort around the Fentons' technology, finding himself unwilling to even enter the Specter Speeder. Meanwhile, Danny is a bit on alert when in Magus Bazaar, not only due to the presence of magical creatures but also the admittance that he's had some negative experiences with magic in the past.
  • Mistaken for Thief: Much like in the episode, Jake mistakes Danny for being the one who stole the skull.
  • My Sister Is Off-Limits: Even after becoming friends, Jake doesn't approve of Haley crushing on Danny.
  • Mythology Gag: Upon meeting Jonathan, Danny wonders if he's a werewolf. This is one of the unused plans for the series.
  • No-Sell:
    • As powerful as Jake's fire breath is, Danny can tank a ghost-dragon breath blast magnitudes more.
    • Vlad's plan to put the Dark Dragon under his control through Sphinx Hair amounted to nothing as the Dark Dragon has become so powerful that he's now immune to that weakness.
    • The Fright Knight discovers the Soul Shredder doesn't work on the Dark Dragon since he states he fears nothing.
    • Subverted with the weak spot behind his ear, which actually disorients the Dark Dragon when hit. Combining Danny's ecto-blasts and Jake's fire also does noticeable damage.
  • Not-So-Well-Intentioned Extremist: Danny calls the Dark Dragon out for not really caring about making the world better for magical creatures, and just using it as an excuse to gain power for himself.
  • Oblivious to Love: Danny never figures out Haley has a crush on him even when she has a heart-to-heart with him, much to Sam and Jake's frustration at his cluelessness.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Both Danny and Jake realize something is wrong after their battle since they are MUCH more aggressive with each other than they normally are. People comment on how oddly hostile they are in the other's presence.
  • The Power of Friendship: What finally breaks Danny and Jake free from the spell is the two coming to see each other as friends.
  • Pragmatic Villainy:
    • While the Fright Knight hates Pandora, he’s willing to work with her descendant Eli Pandarus to free the Dark Dragon.
    • Eli Pandarus cuts ties with Vlad Plasmius and the Fright Knight after their goal to free the Dark Dragon ends in complete disaster.
  • Pre-Asskicking One-Liner: Jake says this to Danny before he changes into his dragon form and attacks him in their first fight.
Jake: You got three seconds before the Am Drag's gonna show you out! (followed up with Roar Before Beating)
  • Precocious Crush: Haley starts developing one on a clueless Danny, much to Jake's dismay.
  • Pre-Mortem One-Liner: Danny does a chant when he overshadows Jake in their first fight.
Danny: D-to-the-A-to-the-N-N-Y, this dragon's got claws and wings to fly! But I'm still better than this other guy!
  • Prince Charmless: A wise and noble prince Aragon ain't. He definitely ain’t handsome either, as Jake and Danny can attest to.
  • Punctuated! For! Emphasis!: In Chapter 13, the Dark Dragon reminds Vlad and Pandarus, “This… better… work…”.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: As befitting their fire and ice contrast, Jake is the impulsive and reckless Red Oni to Danny's careful and strategic Blue Oni.
  • Retired Badass: Lao Shi isn’t the Chinese Dragon anymore but he passes his wisdom down to his grandson Jake by training him to be the new protector of the magical community as the American Dragon. Lao Shi's skills are still sufficient enough to let him get the upper hand against Vlad Plasmius in a fight.
  • The Rich Want to Be Richer: Despite already being one of the richest guys on the planet, Vlad sides with the Dark Dragon in the hopes of obtaining treasure.
  • Right for the Wrong Reasons: Despite Danny's unassuming appearance, Jake immediately transforms and starts tossing him around during their first match, clearly convinced that the accused thief is more dangerous than he looks. He's correct… because Danny just got done taking back the stolen goods from the real thief.
  • Science Is Bad: Fu Dog doesn’t have the best opinion of human science, especially since it was a lab accident that gave Danny his ghost powers and allowed Danny’s parents to build a Fenton Thermos device to capture ghosts.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here!:
    • Subverted with Shackles Jack, who tries to escape after being beaten by Jake and Danny to avoid being imprisoned again in the Mugwomp Cup, but the latter traps him in the Fenton Thermos before he can get away.
    • The Box Ghost goes to Magus Bazaar to take all their boxes (magical or otherwise) but quickly flees when he sees that Danny is there too.
  • Sealed Good in a Can: After Danny kills Jake in their first battle, he immediately comes back as a ghost and before he has a chance to understand what just happened to him, Danny seals him into the Fenton Thermos.
  • See the Invisible: Averted, as while the Eye of the Dragon gives Jake enhanced sight, it's never shown the ability to see invisible beings or objects, which was a disadvantage in fighting Danny when the halfa turned intangible.
  • Sequel Hook: In the final chapter, Kim gets an ominous message on her site saying “Soon… it's your turn.”
  • Shipper on Deck: Jake offers to help Danny be less weak-kneed around Kim Possible if he hopes to get her interest.
  • Shout-Out:
    • A powerful evil dragon released from being a Sealed Evil in a Can and refusing to honor the agreement he made with the ones who freed him due to a technicality? Where have I heard that one before… Later, the spell needed to imprison the Dark Dragon again is cast over the phone.
    • Two teenage heroes starring in a crossover start off antagonistic with each other but eventually become friends, even doing a Fusion Dance of sorts in order to beat the Big Bad. Did I describe Danny and Jake or Ben and Rex?
  • Silver Fox: The two ugly old witches certainly think this of Vlad, much to his disgust.
  • Skewed Priorities:
    • Sam is more upset at Jake for using his dragon powers to defend himself from Dash than the fact that Dash was threatening to beat him up.
    • Jazz and Trixie reprimand Tucker and Spud respectively for trying to flirt with them respectively while Jake and Danny are fighting each other due to the spell placed on them.
    • Lao Shi is more offended that Jake lost a fight to Danny Phantom rather than the fact his grandson could've died had it not been for Clockwork's interference.
    • Due to her Precocious Crush on Danny, Haley gets distracted from freeing her grandfather when she hears that Sam and Tucker are Danny's friends and Jazz is his sister, prompting her to ask about things like his favorite ice cream flavor.
    • When Danny and Jake are fighting again, Fu Dog is more concerned about how Jake is “getting sloppy with his left”.
  • Smarter Than You Look: Spud correctly analyzes that Jake’s fire breath hits with a force equal to at least 31 tons of TNT since his fire is strong enough to destroy a house and blast apart stone. Jake and Trixie even lampshade this trope.
  • Smug Snake:
    • Huntsboys 88 and 89 think they can use Shackles Jack's gang to beat Jake and Danny but run away when the ghosts refuse to listen to them.
    • Vlad severely overestimates his ability to handle the Dark Dragon and pays for it by being subjected to a Curb-Stomp Battle when Sphinx Hair fails to work on the dragon.
  • Something We Forgot: Our heroes completely forget about Vlad once the Dark Dragon is dealt with. In fairness, he's left powerless at the hands of two witches who take a liking to him. Danny is the only one who thinks they forgot something, only to dismiss it when Jake says it probably wasn't that important.
  • Sore Loser: Jake stubbornly insists that Danny only won their battle out of luck. Granted, the spell probably contributed to his attitude.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: Thanks to Clockwork planting a DB crystal on Danny, Jake doesn't remain dead after the fight is over.
  • Speak in Unison: During his first fight with Danny, Jake and his doppelgängers do this with the second half of Anything You Can Do, I Can Do Better, in contrast to Danny's doppelgängers, who don't speak.
  • Stop Hitting Yourself: At their end of their first fight where Danny manages to overshadow Jake, the first thing he does is make the dragon fly into buildings and walls to disorient and hurt him before setting up the American Dragon for one last killing blow.
  • Strong and Skilled: While past his prime, Lao Shi is still a powerful dragon who’s been training and protecting the magical community as the Chinese Dragon for most of his life while Vlad has only had 20 years to practice with his ghost powers and has been in far fewer fights than Danny. Thus, Vlad is caught off-guard by Lao Shi’s duplication and Touch the Intangible powers, and only wins their fight because the Fright Knight incapacitates Lao Shi with a surprise attack.
  • Stupid Evil:
    • Huntsboys 88 and 89 actually thought Shackles Jack's gang would obey them out of gratitude for freeing them from the Mugwomp Cup and admit they didn't have a backup plan in case the ghosts turned on them.
    • You're this if you think it's a good idea to free the Dark Dragon like Vlad Plasmius, the Fright Knight, and Eli Pandarus.
  • Suicidal Overconfidence:
    • This costs Jake his life in his first battle with Danny. Fortunately, the ghost boy was able to undo it with the crystal Clockwork gave him.
    • Vlad Plasmius, the Fright Knight, and Eli Pandarus think they can handle the Dark Dragon with just Sphinx Hair and Soul Shredder. They’re swiftly proven wrong and easily beaten by the Dark Dragon since neither method is effective against him.
  • Super-Reflexes: Danny and Jake are fast enough to dodge laser blasts (Danny has experience from ecto blasts, which are comparable to lasers). While their reflexes are similar, it’s noted that Danny has outsped lasers more consistently than Jake.
  • Super-Senses: Jake’s “Eye of the Dragon” and “Ear of the Dragon” grant him highly-enhanced sight and hearing, respectively. However, he cannot sense invisible beings such as Danny, who can easily slip by and sneak up on him.
  • Super-Speed: Danny once outflew a living space shuttle, which fly at speeds of about 17,500 mph. This is far higher than his opponent Jake’s flight speed, who could only fly about 179 mph at best.
  • Super-Toughness:
    • Danny's tough enough to tank multiple blasts from the ghost-dragon Dorothea's Breath Weapon, which is powerful enough to dispel cloud formations large enough to require over 7.5 kilotons of TNT. This was far stronger than the best showings of Jake's own Breath Weapon, which could only output 31 tons of TNT at best, meaning Danny could handle it without much issue.
    • Jake can walk off being smashed through walls of solid steel. However, his opponent Danny’s destructive capability is far too powerful for him to handle.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute:
    • Danny considers Brad Morton to be an even dumber version of Dash.
    • At Magus Bazaar, Danny runs into a harpy that's just as snobby and unpleasant as Paulina. He doesn't waste any time in rejecting her.
    • Danny considers Huntsboys 88 and 89 to be human versions of the Box Ghost since they’re just annoying troublemakers who aren’t really a threat.
  • Symbiotic Possession: To give themselves an edge against the Dark Dragon, Danny overshadows Jake but lets the teen dragon retain control over his body and fight the Dark Dragon while Danny uses his powers through Jake.
  • Take That!: The story doesn't seem to like Sara and Kara's Season 2 designs much.
  • Taught by Experience:
    • It's brought up that Danny doesn't have any formal martial arts training like Jake but compensates with his slightly superior combat experience.
    • Jake has gotten better at fighting ghosts ever since going to Amity Park, so Shackle's Jack's gang is less of a challenge for him this time around.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Danny and Jake's partnership is extremely strained, partly because the spell they're under makes them want to fight each other.
  • Tempting Fate:
    • After being betrayed by the Dark Dragon and abandoned by his allies, Vlad asks, “How could this get any worse?!” His answer comes in the form of two ugly witch hags who become romantically interested in him, and he's forced to flee since he's too weak to transform into a ghost.
    • Shackles Jack declares that he won’t go back in the Mugwomp Cup. Danny makes sure it happens by trapping him and his gang in the Fenton Thermos instead.
  • Third-Person Person: Brad almost always addresses himself as “The Bradster”, to which Danny is thoroughly unimpressed and just mocks him for it.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Jake puts up a better fight against Danny in their rematch since he’s able to No-Sell Danny’s attempt to possess him through sheer strength of will due to already having experience in being overshadowed by Danny.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass:
    • Danny and Jake become more aggressive and confrontational when around each other. Justified since they’re under a spell that makes them want to fight each other. They cool down once the spell is removed.
    • While already a villain, the Dark Dragon has become more spiteful and cruel after being imprisoned a second time so he seeks to destroy human civilization instead of merely ruling over it.
  • Totally Radical: Jake has a habit of speaking like this, such as calling himself the “Am-Drag of New York City”, much to Danny's confusion before the fight truly began.
  • Touch the Intangible: As magical beings, Jake, Haley, and Lao Shi are capable of harming otherwise intangible ghosts. This allowed Jake to hurt Danny with physical attacks even when Danny was intangible, but it's pretty much a minor counter-option that he had against the ghost boy.
  • A Tragedy of Impulsiveness: The first fight between the two teenaged heroes started because Jake mistook Danny for a thief and attacked him without giving him time to explain. The fight ended with Jake's body being vaporised and his ghost being imprisoned in Danny's Fenton Thermos.
  • Trash Talk: Both Danny and Jake taunt each other with banter, puns, and boasts during their first fight and later.
Danny: (after phasing through a thrown stone slab) Hahaha! Wanna try something else? I don't want this to drag-on!
Jake: Ah yeah! I'm the Am-Dragon of the NYC, and you, ghost kid, ain't got nothin' on me!
  • Trauma Button: After Danny restores him with the red gemstone, the Fenton Thermos becomes this to Jake since Danny used it to trap his ghost spirit after killing him in their first fight.
  • Underestimating Badassery: Vlad has a low opinion of dragons and doesn’t consider Jake or Lao Shi much of a threat because as far as he’s concerned, all they can do is spit fire. This bites him when he almost loses against the former Chinese Dragon due to Lao Shi’s superior experience and ability to harm intangible ghosts, as well as having a hard time dealing with Jake and Danny when they team up.
  • Unskilled, but Strong:
    • As opposed to Jake having martial arts training from his grandpa, Danny has no training. Though being overall stronger, combined with his slightly greater amount of combat experience and No-Sell powers, gave him the win regardless.
    • Compared to Lao Shi, Vlad's skill and experience aren't enough as he has only had his ghost powers for 20 years, whereas Lao Shi has 30+ years of martial arts training and combat experience in defending the magical community from threats as the Chinese Dragon. It's shown in their fight when Vlad is caught off-guard by the Blue Dragon powers and only wins thanks to the Fright Knight's help.
    • Haley has all the same dragon powers as her older brother Jake but doesn’t possess his experience or mental fortitude, as she freezes up in fear when confronting Shackles Jack's gang since she’s never fought ghosts before.
  • Villain Decay:
    • After Rose's wish destroyed the Huntsclan, the Huntsman eventually returned as a ghost but no longer has his followers because those who also became ghosts, resenting him for their fate, decided to spend their afterlives in isolation. He could've zigzagged it with his ghost powers but, because of his hatred of all things magical, he refused to use them. Jake even lampshades how the Huntsman went from the magical world's Public Enemy #4 to someone making threats that he can't keep.
    • The entire Huntsclan has been reduced to Huntsboy 88 and 89, who are nothing but a joke to the heroes due to their incompetence, stupidity, inability to properly work the Huntsclan's tech, lack of training, and cowardice.
  • Villain Forgot to Level Grind: Averted, as the Dark Dragon has apparently been training while trapped in order to get his revenge.
  • Villain Team-Up: Vlad makes a deal with the Dark Dragon to set him free while plotting to betray and enslave him. Pandarus later joins the team.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Jake and Danny become this by the end of the story since they've developed a friendly rivalry.
  • Wake Up, Go to School, Save the World: Both Danny and Jake are teenage superheroes who regularly have to face the villains as well as deal with/manage the typical everyday and mundane problems that come with adolescence.
  • Weak, but Skilled: Jake has had a considerable amount of martial arts training under his grandfather, but his overall power pales in comparison to Danny's. Indeed, Danny and his clones gain the upper hand in most of the melee combat because of this. Jake's skills let him keep up with Danny for a while, but he is eventually overwhelmed by the halfa's power.
  • Weredragon: Unlike Aragon, Jake, Haley and Lao Shi are dragons who can shapeshift at will.
  • Willfully Weak: The Huntsman refuses to use the powers his status as a ghost grants him due to his hatred of magical creatures, allowing Danny to easily trap him in an ice prison.
  • Yandere: Vlad is this as usual as he's willing to put the world at risk by freeing the Dark Dragon in the hopes of obtaining Maddie.
  • You Are What You Hate: Now that the Huntsman is a ghost, he's technically one of the magical creatures that he so hates and wishes to destroy, with his refusal to use his ghostly abilities just further cementing his Villain Decay. Jake even notes when the Huntsman says that he refuses to use the abilities of a “spectral monster” that he was always a monster, he's just in a universe full of them now.
  • You Have Failed Me: While in the Ghost Zone, the Huntsclan disband and cut ties with the Huntsman since they blame him for their demise.
