Danny Phantom: Freeze

Go To

Freeze is the 26th story in Danny Phantom: Stranded. Danny and Star recall an adventure they had during a ski trip with their families.

Tropes:

  • 0% Approval Rating: No one from the Far Frozen likes Glaciar for being a traitor and a coward. It's no secret that he wasn't exactly missed after he was banished.
  • Alone Among the Couples: Jazz expresses annoyance at seeing Star and Danny being lovey-dovey with each other, partly because it reminds her she is still single.
  • All for Nothing: Glaciar's plot to trick Danny and take over the Far Frozen ends with him not only losing his battle against Frostbite, but losing the chalice he spent centuries searching for and finally being arrested.
  • Alternate Character Interpretation:
    • An In-Universe example when Sam and Star discuss Stella's insistence on inviting Star, her dad, and Danny's family on her ski trip. Sam believes that Stella only wanted to show off her expensive chalet, but Star seems to believe that her mother just wanted to have company since the Beviers (sans Pierre) wouldn't/couldn't come on the trip and she didn't want to be alone. Jazz seems to side with Star's opinion more.
    • It's unknown if the tears Glaciar shed after Frostbite left were Broken Tears or Tears of Remorse.
  • Always Second Best: How Glaciar always felt around Frostbite and it's part of the resentment he felt towards him.
  • Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: Both Danny and Star's parents can't help but tease them a bit, much to their annoyance.
  • Amazon Chaser: Danny smiles while Star decks Glaciar for all he did towards them.
  • Ambiguous Start of Darkness: Star witnesses from Frostbite's memories that Glaciar was pure of heart as a child and truly cared about Frostbite to the point of saving his life, but grew more arrogant and selfish as an adult before he betrayed him.
  • Ambition Is Evil: Glaciar was once pure of heart but became selfish and arrogant after he was named as Frostbite's second-in-command and later tried to steal his place as chief.
  • Ambitious, but Lazy: Glaciar wants to rule over the Far Frozen as chief. While he's intelligent, Frostbite claims he was too lazy to actually do any training.
  • Anti-Role Model: Glaciar's actions are NOT meant to be imitated.
  • Asshole Victim: Glaciar is a total sociopath, and no one feels sorry for him after he gets brutally beaten up and arrested by Frostbite.
  • Bad Boss: Glaciar was this when he was Frostbite's second-in-command, and he treated his fellow warriors poorly.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: The reason Danny was so willing to help Glaciar (who lied that he was on a mission from Frostbite) is because he wanted to repay Frostbite for being one of the few ghosts who was kind to him.
  • Being Evil Sucks: Glaciar's crimes cause him to be banished from his tribe, defeated by Frostbite, and arrested, with everyone's approval.
  • Benevolent Boss: Frostbite is very well-liked by his fellow warriors and he is very loyal to his tribe, wanting only what's best for the Far Frozen.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Frostbite is a very kind ghost, but he is still a strong warrior and wipes the floor with Glaciar during their duel.
  • Big Bad Friend: Glaicar is this towards Frostbite.
  • Big Ego, Hidden Depths: Glaciar is very arrogant and deceptive, but he is revealed to be a very good ice skater.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Glaciar acts as a loyal and well-meaning warrior from the Far Frozen on the surface, but has a much more selfish and cruel side underneath that exterior.
  • Blatant Lies:
    • Almost everything Glaciar tells Danny is a lie.
    • Penelope Spectra insists on claiming she's 29 in spite of having been around during Frostbite's predecessor's youth. Star scoffs at the idea, saying that, if Spectra is 29, Colette is a natural redhead.
  • Brains Evil, Brawn Good: Glacias vs Frostbite.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: Glaciar is very crafty and manipulative, but prefers relying on tricks and technology to fight his battles rather than actually training to improve his physical strength.
  • Brutal Honesty: Glaciar points out that Danny shouldn't have believed him so easily, especially since they hardly knew each other.
  • Bullying a Dragon: Glaciar actually thought it was a good idea to boss around Frostbite (who is much stronger and more powerful than him) and pick a fight with him. It goes about as well as one can expect.
  • Challenging the Chief: After obtaining the chalice and receiving a power boost, Glaciar arrogantly challenges Frostbite to a duel for the title of chief of the Far Frozen.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Downplayed. While Stella tries to hide it, she's not thrilled to know that Solene will soon join them on the ski trip. She also feels depressed and even annoyed when witnessing Johnathan and Solene being romantic together.
  • Con Man: Glaciar is a tricky and deceptive scoundrel, who relieves of lies and deception to further his own goals.
  • Continuity Nod: Stella reveals that the reason she didn't bring Colette on the ski trip is because the latter is grounded for "the huge mess she made during the Holidays", presumably referring to how Colette accidentally ruined their Christmas tree during one of her tantrums in "Snowed".
  • Control Freak: Glaciar is very arrogant and controlling when "training" Danny.
  • "Could Have Avoided This!" Plot: Frostbite points out the events of this story and Glaciar's final fate could have been avoided if he had been humbler, willing to improve himself, and didn't betray the former in the first place.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Frostbite basically manages to wipe the floor with Glaciar during their duel, especially after he loses the chalice.
  • Dirty Coward:
    • Glaciar cared more about himself than his so-called childhood friend when he left Frostbite to nearly be killed in an explosion.
    • Not only was Baylor cheating on his girlfriend with Jazz, but he runs away and leaves both of them behind when he thinks they are in danger from "the abominable snowman" (Frostbite).
  • Empowered Badass Normal: Glaciar is the scrawniest and weakest of the Far Frozen until he receives the power of the Chalice of Cold.
  • Entitled Bastard: Glaciar believes he is the one who is destined to lead the Far Frozen.
  • Even Evil Can Be Loved: A platonic example but Glaciar was once Frostbite's best friend, and Frostbite truly cared for him and tried to see the best in him, even when Glaciar acted condescending towards the other warriors.
  • Evil Counterpart: Glaciar is basically a power-hungry, manipulative, and selfish version of Frostbite.
  • Evil Former Friend: Glaciar used to be friends with Frostbite before betraying the Far Frozen.
  • Evil Mentor: Glaciar is essentially this to Danny, after his true colors are revealed.
  • Extreme Doormat: Frostbite somewhat acted like this towards Glaciar until he betrayed him.
  • Failures on Ice: Danny has trouble with ice skating. Thankfully, he gets better after training from Star and Glaciar.
  • False Friend: Glaciar used to be this towards Frostbite, taking advantage of their friendship in order to further his own power in the tribe until he eventually betrayed him.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Glaciar acts superficially charming to the people he tries to manipulate, barely hiding an arrogant, condescending and controlling side.
  • Framing Device: Danny, Star and Jazz tell Sam and Tucker about an adventure that took place before "Blackmailed".
  • Genius Bruiser: Glaciar is a warrior from the Far Frozen who is stated to be more of a scientist than a warrior.
  • Good Is Not Dumb: Star is far more skeptical of Glaciar's intentions than Danny and goes to Frostbite to confirm he's a fake.
  • Good Is Not Soft: Frostbite is very kind and wise but as shown with his battle with Glaciar, he's not afraid to fight back in order to protect his tribe.
  • Hidden Depths: Glaciar is revealed to be very skilled in ice skating and even starts to train Danny in it.
  • Hypocrite: Glaciar calls Frostbite an "old fool", though Frostbite points out that they are the same age.
  • I Coulda Been a Contender!: Stella reveals that she was once an aspiring figure skater and had a chance to go pro during college, only to be forced to give up her dream due to Beatrice's disapproval since it didn't fit with what her mother thought her daughter should be. Stella still regrets caving in to Beatrice's demands and turning down that offer to this day.
  • I Hate Past Me: Frostbite deeply regrets allowing his past friendship with Glaciar to blind him to the kind of person his ex-friend was until Glaciar betrayed him.
  • Internal Reveal: In chapter 10, Danny finally learns about Glaciar's true villainous nature after Star and Frostbite warn him.
  • I Should Have Been Better: Danny feels guilty for easily falling for Glaciar's tricks.
  • It's All About Me: Glaciar is very selfish and egocentric, believing that only HE should be leading the Far Frozen and no one else.
  • It's All My Fault: Danny feels awful that he was so gullible as to fall for Glaciar's lies and apologizes to Frostbite for it.
  • I Reject Your Reality: Glaciar is convinced that he is more worthy to lead the Far Frozen than Frostbite does. No one else believes this.
  • Jerkass: It's eventually revealed that Jazz's crush, Baylor, is a cheating jerk.
  • Kick the Dog: After his evil deeds are revealed to Danny, Glaciar goes as far to mock him for easily falling for his tricks.
  • Lack of Empathy: Glaciar feels no guilt for his crimes.
  • Lame Pun Reaction: When Danny uses his ice powers during a heatwave, Star says she loves "having the COOLEST guy in town as a boyfriend", prompting the others to send her looks and Sam to ask "Really?" and raise a brow.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Glaciar not only loses his duel with Frostbite, but also the Chalice of Cold before getting arrested.
  • Let Me Get This Straight...: Danny basically says this after he learns of Glaciar's true colors and what he really is planning.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Glaciar manipulates Danny into doing his dirty work so he can find the Chalice of Cold and use its power to take over the Far Frozen.
  • Mask of Sanity: Glaciar pretends to be a wise and well-meaning warrior of the Far Frozen, barely hiding that he is a narcissistic Manipulative Bastard who wants to overthrow Frostbite and take his place as chief of the tribe.
  • My Greatest Failure: Frostbite greatly regrets letting Glaciar get away with so much due to their past friendship.
  • Narcissist: Glaciar is very arrogant and has a high opinion of himself.
  • Never My Fault: Glaciar blames all the bad things that happened to him on Frostbite, never taking his own actions into consideration.
  • Noodle Incident: Jazz recalls a time when her parents' sensors made them think a senior center was haunted. The charges were dropped after Jack and Maddie agreed to pay for the damages and the only other thing known about the incident is that Star's dad was the Fentons' lawyer.
  • No Social Skills: Glaciar pretends to be friendly but is also very bossy, arrogant and controlling.
  • Not-So-Well-Intentioned Extremist: Glaciar tricks Danny and Star into helping him, steals the power of the Chalice of Cold, and tries to become the leader of the Far Frozen, believing he is the best person to lead the tribe. However, he is a deceptive, arrogant monster who only desires power and to satisfy his ego.
  • Oblivious to Hatred: Frostbite honestly didn't believe that Glaciar resented or hated him, until he tried to betray him.
  • Offscreen Karma: Colette was grounded for the rest of winter break after she broke her family's Christmas tree in "Snowed".
  • Pet the Dog: Glaciar teaches Danny how to ice skate despite it providing no benefit to his plan.
  • Properly Paranoid:
    • For all of his paranoia, Glaciar was right about it just being a matter of time until the Behemoth was no longer enough to prevent Pariah Dark from returning.
    • Star suspects Glaciar of being shady and asks Frostbite about him to learn he's a traitor.
  • The Perils of Being the Best: Frostbite is chief of the Far Frozen and considered their best warrior. However, this also made him a target of Glaciar's envy and resentment, leading to his betrayal.
  • “The Reason You Suck” Speech: Frostbite gives an epic one to Glaciar during their battle about how he was never worthy to be a leader or utilize the Chalice of Cold because he always tries to take shortcuts and cheat while failing to grasp that true power must come from within and be earned.
  • The Reveal: Chapter 7 reveals that Glaciar is a traitor and was banished from the Far Frozen long ago for treachery.
  • Secretly Selfish: Glaciar believes that he is the best candidate to lead the Far Frozen, but it's clear he only wants the power that comes with being the chief.
  • Shipper on Deck: Stella is still this for Danny and Star, finding them adorable when they have a loving moment together.
  • Shout-Out: Flower princess11 revealed that Frostbite and Glaciar's friendship and fallout was partly inspired by that of Roku and Sozin.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Glaciar thinks he is much smarter and more capable than he actually is.
  • The Sociopath: Glaciar is one, hiding behind manipulation and superficial charm in order to get others to do what he wants.
  • Stupid Evil: Glaciar's arrogance, selfishness, and shortsightedness not only cost him his status as Frostbite's second-in-command and got him banished, but causes him to lose his duel with Frostbite.
  • Super Gullible: Danny easily believed Glaciar after he claims to be Frostbite's friend despite his grueling training and Star's skepticism.
  • Take Over the World: This is Glaciar's ultimate plan, as he plans to take over not only the Far Frozen but the entire Ghost Zone as well.
  • Thin-Skinned Bully: Glaciar is very arrogant and throws his weight around when he has power, such as being Frostbite's second-in-command or empowered by the chalice. However, when he has neither, he is just a miserable, sorry excuse of a warrior who doesn't stand a chance against Frostbite.
  • Token Evil Teammate: Glaciar was this before his banishment. It's no surprised that he's not exactly missed by his fellow warriors.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Despite his intellect, Glaciar didn't see anything wrong with stealing from PANDORA of all people. It was one of the reasons he was demoted in the first place.
  • Underestimating Badassery: This ended up being Glaciar's undoing in his and Frostbite's duel.
  • Undying Loyalty: The only reason Danny listened to Glaciar was because he thought he was helping Frostbite.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Even after Frostbite generously made him his second-in-command, Glaciar still misused his power and later tried to betray his friend to become chief of the tribe.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: According to Frostbite, Glaciar was once pure of heart and truly was a good friend of his before he betrayed him.
  • Using You All Along: Star discovers that Glaciar was only using Danny in order to steal the chalice and overthrow Frostbite in order to become chief of the Far Frozen, and later take over the Ghost Zone.
  • Villain Forgot to Level Grind: Frostbite points out during their battle that in the 300 years since his banishment, Glaciar hardly improved his strength, while Frostbite continued his own training and became even stronger since their last battle.
  • Villain Has a Point:
    • While he was a jerk about it, Glaciar did have a point that Danny shouldn't have been so naive as to believe him just because of his supposed connection to Frostbite.
    • Glaciar was right that Pariah Dark would eventually return because the Behemoth wasn’t enough.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Part of Glaciar's paranoia is due to wanting to protect the Far Frozen from potential threats such as remaining loyal soldiers of Pariah Dark and a fear that someone would try and release him. However, his intentions become less altruistic once it's shown he misused his status as Frostbite's second-in-command for his own ends and later tried to destroy Frostbite to take his place as chief.
  • We Used to Be Friends: Frostbite confesses to Star that Glaciar's claim that they had once been friends was not a lie. He reveals that they indeed had been childhood friends and Glaciar had even served as his second-in-command for a time before he was banished.
  • What You Are in the Dark: Glaciar had the choice to either help Frostbite before his machine exploded or leave him behind. Unfortunately, he chose the latter.
  • With Great Power Comes Great Insanity: Obtaining the Chalice's power doesn't help Glaciar's sanity, to say the least.
  • With Great Power Comes Great Opposition: Frostbite was chosen to lead the Far Frozen by the previous chief due to being their best warrior. The only one not happy with this decision was Glaciar, who spent years secretly resenting Frostbite before he betrayed him.
  • Workaholic: Stella accuses her ex-husband Johnathan of being one.
  • Would Hurt a Child: After his evil nature is revealed, Glaciar wastes no time in fighting Danny and Star when they try and stop him.
  • Would Rather Suffer: Frostbite would rather eat raw blood blossoms than to surrender his tribe to Glaciar.
  • You're Insane!: Frostbite believes that Glaciar has gone insane during their fight.
