Danganronpa: Corrupted Hope

Go To

Danganronpa: Corrupted Hope is a Submit-Your-Own-Character Danganronpa fanfic featuring an original cast of characters written by SilverMark16.

From the site summary: Sixteen people wake up and find themselves in a large, abandoned prison facility with no answers as to why they're there. Instead, they're forced to play a dangerous game of Life and Death. A game known only as a Killing Game, hosted by a sinister man calling himself White Collar and his pet snake, Monohebi.

The fanfic was completed June 2024, and has a sequel being written right at the moment: Danganronpa: Twisted Tragedy, with another sequel, Danganronpa: Isolated Identity also being written.

Danganronpa: Corrupted Hope provides examples of:

  • Adaptational Heroism: In a twisted way, Junko and Mukuro get this, as rather than being the masterminds of the Killing Game and responsible for global despair and misery, they're victims who were trapped in the game but created an unsolvable murder that resulted in every other student's death.
  • Adaptational Villainy: Jin Kirigiri goes from the starter victim in canon to the Mastermind of the fic's Deadly Game, White Collar.
  • Alternate Universe: This fic is ultimately revealed to be an alternate timeline for the Danganronpa series. The events themselves aren't very well known, with the events being seen more as an urban legend, with no one knowing anything about who died, survived, or was the mastermind; all they know is that 16 students disappeared. It's eventually revealed that all 16 students died, their student files scattered about the prison facility the current group is trapped in.
  • Appropriated Appellation: Jin Kirigiri took the mask and name of White Collar from Arthur during his time as the mastermind of the Killing Game that resulted in the death of his daughter and her classmates.
  • Biblical Motifs: Overall, the story has a heavy Christianity based theme, and each chapter takes inspiration from a particular tale in the Bible, one brought up in the start of said chapter.
    • The prologue, The Ark to Life and Death, makes its motif obvious: Noah and the Ark. White Collar makes it clear how he sees the participants as sinners before attempting to drown them, much like how God saw the Earth infested with sin and flooded the Earth.
    • The first chapter, Silence of the Sacrificial Lamb, is based on Abraham and how he had to sacrifice his son Isaac to prove his loyalty to God. Being the first chapter, the first victim would serve as the Sacrificial Lamb to show how truly deadly the game is.
    • The second chapter, The Solace of Hate and Envy, is based on Cain and Abel. Specifically, it's revealed that Arthur and Ina are half-siblings to the same father, with Ina attempting to murder Arthur much like how Cain did to Abel, though failing unlike in the biblical tale.
    • The third chapter, Sums For Our Fallen Grace, is based on Jacob and Esau, more specifically how Jacob tricked his blind father Isaac into giving him the life Esau would have lived. Similarly, Carter deliberately wrote an article regarding in a way that exposed his abusive older sister and ultimately destroyed her life to the point of suicide. Thus, Carter essentially stole her life much like Jacob stole Esau's.
    • The fourth chapter, Sins of the Forsaken, is based on the Denial of Peter, where Peter denied knowing Jesus thrice upon the latter's arrest, feeling guilty as Jesus looks at him with distress. Similarly, Cassandra denies Jared thrice even as he attempts to save the entire group, leaving her immensely guilty when it's revealed how much he truly wanted to help the group.
    • The fifth chapter, Saviour of the Damned, is based Moses leading the Jews out of Egypt. Cassandra and Ina both try to help the others escape, but unlike Moses, their plans fail.
    • The final chapter, New World's Eden, is obviously based around the Garden of Eden and the fall of Adam and Eve due to consuming the forbidden fruit and the birth of sin. The Kamakura Project and artificial talents are said forbidden fruit and the artificial Ultimates are the sins borne of said fruit.
  • Big Bad: White Collar is the mastermind of this Killing Game, accompanied by his ally Monohebi.
  • Big Red Devil: White Collar wears a demonic red mask with horns and a Slasher Smile, and he sees himself as a punisher of sinners while also being willing to make bargains with them in exchange for a favor.
  • Born in the Wrong Century: Kane, the Ultimate Pawnbroker, has a decidedly negative outlook towards modern technology, calling the current time the "newfangled garbage era", and has far more interest in old technology and culture.
  • Career-Ending Injury: Haruto attempts to escape at one point, but he ends up falling and breaking his leg in such a way that he can no longer play basketball, devastating since his talent was as the Ultimate Basketball Player, though is still able to at least walk.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: Would you expect anything less from a Danganronpa fanfic? The executions are, as always, tailored to inflict maximum suffering to the murderers physically and psychologically.
    • Chapter 1, Silence of the Sacrificial Lamb: The killer here is Kanenoshin Omao (aka Kane), the Ultimate Pawnbroker, who undergoes Get Pawn'd. It starts with Kane being stuck in a Stock Punishment while angry customers start swarming in carrying fruits and tomatoes, Monohebi standing atop a trio of golden spheres held by chains (referencing a common symbol of pawnbroking) and painting targets on them. With that, the customers begin Produce Pelting the spheres, making them slowly slip from the chains, and two of them crush his hands. Kane is given a brief Hope Spot that he might make it out alive, but Monohebi then releases the final ball herself, crushing his own head.
    • Chapter 2, The Solace of Hate and Envy: The killer here is Mayu Mashiro, the Ultimate Heiress, who undergoes Qu'ils Mangent de la Broche. Mayu is first trapped in a booster seat as the main guest of honor at a grand feast with mannequins wearing Victorian masks and Monohebi bringing out a giant cake. Monohebi then starts Force Feeding Mayu said cake, struggling to keep up as the speed increases and the mannequins begin laughing at her. After she has all of it, she is thrown across the table while the dining room is set on fire before the chandelier almost crushes her. She feels brief relief before a glass guillotine lops off her head, Monohebi displaying it for the mannequins to cheer over.
    • Chapter 3, Sums For Our Fallen Grace: The killer here is Victor "Barracuda" Marakovich, the Ultimate Fitness Trainer, who undergoes Cardiovascular Workout. He's placed on a treadmill with chains attached to his wrists and neck with a shredding machine behind it, Monohebi activating the treadmill, starting out slow but increasing it up to a hundred miles per hour, all the while Barracuda struggles to keep up. Monohebi attempts to increase the speed even further past its dial's max speed, making it run at ludicrous speeds. Ultimately, Barracuda trips and has his skin shredded off like sandpaper, upon which he still tries to run, but Monohebi unlocks the chains and leaves him to fall into the shredder, leaving nothing but Ludicrous Gibs.
    • Chapter 4, Sins of the Forsaken: While the killer and victim were one and the same via suicide, White Collar elects to have an execution due to a rule being broken. Said rule breaker is Zuri Auraline, the Ultimate Bassist, who undergoes Final Performance (Dreamin' Ver. 2). With this, Zuri's wrists and neck are chained while she holds an electric bass guitar atop a giant bear trap as mannequins representing the other members of the Dream Palms badly play music. The more she tries to play to save the performance, the more her guitar begins to electrocute her, all the while Monohebi presses down on buzzers in a mock judge role, rating her performance as bad while the tempo keeps increasing and her fingers bleed. At the end of the performance, the bear trap snaps shut, bisecting her and leaving her lower body to slide off.
    • Chapter 5, Saviour of the Damned: While White Collar was the true blackened, the one who is to be executed is Arthur Kingston, the Ultimate Snowboarder, who undergoes The Ride Against Winter's Wind. Strapped to a snowboard in civilian attire, he struggles going down a snowy hill, as no goggles means no ability to protect his eyes and no ability. Making matters is when Monohebi sets off a Hair-Trigger Avalanche, ready to bury him alive even against his best efforts. He ultimately tumbles and is about to be swallowed by the snow, but in the end, he survives his execution.
  • Deadly Game: It's a Danganronpa fic, so yes, the plot revolves around one of these.
  • Death by Adaptation: The Reveal is that unlike in the canon series, every student in Class 78th was ultimately executed, unlike in canon where Kyoko, Makoto, Hina, Toko, Byakuya, and Hiro all made it out alive.
  • The Dragon: Two examples.
    • Monohebi is the personal assistant and executioner of White Collar.
    • Credence is this to the New World Order as a whole, being the top executioner of the Grandmaster and his main enforcer.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Polite he may seem, White Collar's affability does nothing to hide the fact he disdains the participants with every fiber of his being, and gladly ensures they are broken when taking their last breath.
  • Gruesome Grandparent: Mayu's grandfather Junichi is revealed as this, as when he learns Mayu went to the police regarding her brothers' tax fraud, he has her given a Shock Collar to punish her, and his abuse caused her to develop Post-Stress Overeating habits while seeing her as a leech and a disappointment.
  • It's Personal: White Collar holds a large amount of hate towards Arthur Kingston to the point of being eager to see him executed and willing to make deals with other participants to get rid of him. It's eventually revealed that White Collar's grudge against him revolves around him being the mastermind of the Killing Game that killed Kyoko and her classmates, with White Collar being Jin Kirigiri, Kyoko's father. Even worse, Arthur and Kyoko were friends working to investigate the disappearance of the Reserve Course students for the Kamakura Project, only for him to betray her to the overseers of said project.
  • Karma Houdini Warranty: Both Zuno Noshino and Arthur Kingston initially got away with overseeing the Kamakura Project and masterminding the Killing Game respectively, but the epilogue reveals that both of them get their just deserts afterwards: Arthur is arrested and left to rot in prison and disowned by his family while Zuno is thrown to the wolves by the Steering Committee in regards to the Kamakura Project much like Jin was.
  • The Man Behind the Man: The Grandmaster is set up as the leader of the New World Order, the ones who helped Jin set up his Killing Game as White Collar.
  • Mythology Gag: Zuri's execution is similar to that of Sayaka's planned execution, with both being titled Final Performance while they need to perform their best atop a Bear Trap that ultimately snaps shut and bisects them.
  • Nebulous Evil Organization: The New World Order is this, being responsible for orchestrating this game and the others made by SilverMark16, and all members are both masked and have plush animals as companions while also heading Killing Games of their own.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: Jin survives his execution, but his daughter Kyoko doesn't, and he is left despondent and hopeless afterwards, worsened when the parents of other students, including Makoto's father, confront him about the Killing Game.
  • Prisoner's Dilemma: Throughout the game, White Collar has his motives distributed through a minigame based on this, pairing the group members against each other. Should both participants choose "Trust", neither has their motive given, but if both choose "Distrust", then both have their motives given to them. However, should one player choose "Trust" while the other selects "Distrust", the one who selected "Trust" will not only receive their motive, but also a disadvantage, while the one who selected "Distrust" receives an advantage while not getting their motive.
  • Serial Killings, Specific Target: It's eventually revealed that this was the motive behind the Tragedy. Kyoko was digging too deep in regards to the Kamakura project, so the decision was to capture her class and have them all executed so as to stop her investigation permanently.
  • Shock Collar: It's revealed that Mayu's grandfather used these against her as punishment for her leaking her brothers committing tax fraud. The epilogue reveals he had several of these collars on hand, making it look worse when he gets arrested.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Snakes Are Sinister: Befitting his devil motif and the game's overall religious themes, White Collar's mascot companion is Monohebi, a robotic snake with Monokuma's iconic two-toned body and lightning-bolt red eye.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: In a cruel twist, Jin Kirigiri survives his canon execution Blast Off!, but ends up heavily injured and requiring a cane to walk as a result of his leg injuries.
  • Tragic Villain: The current White Collar proves to be this. Jin Kirigiri not only had to watch his daughter's class slaughter each other while being helpless to watch, he is also put through an execution that he survives with crippling injuries. Afterwards, the other parents of said class confront him and he is made into a scapegoat, and finds himself learning about the horrors of the Kamakura Project overseen by his friend Zuno Noshino, who takes over as the new Headmaster of Hope's Peak. With nothing left, he becomes White Collar to avenge his daughter's death and take down what he sees as unworthy Ultimates.
  • Villain's Dying Grace: With him ultimately acknowledging that the artificial Ultimates are as capable of spreading hope as natural ones, Jin Kirigiri ultimately keeps his word to help the survivors make it out, and his own execution allows the others to be rescued by becoming a giant flare, ending his life but allowing them to finally make it out.
  • Ye Olde Butcherede Englishe: One of Credence's defining traits is his attempts to speak like a proper knight, but makes grammatical errors that other characters note.
  • You Are What You Hate: Ina makes it clear that she despises rich people, so it's an utter shock when she learns her real father is Alexander Kingston, the head of a wealthy family, making her and her hated enemy Arthur half-siblings.
