Danganronpa: Camp Kuma!

Go To

Enoshima Junko, the Ultimate Fashionista, wakes up to find herself lying on a log in the middle of a campground with a total fashion disaster watching over her. But Yasuhiro's questionable taste in clothes swiftly proves to be the least of her problems — the two of them have been trapped in a mutual killing game overseen by three bizarre bears. Head Camp Counsellor Monokuma is eager to see some bloodshed.

Danganronpa: Camp Kuma is an Alternate Universe Fic based off the Danganronpa franchise. Inspired by SirMuffinsworth's Danganronpa 2/3 Redux: Return Unto Death, the story similarly features a mixed cast of characters:

  • From DR: Enoshima Junko, Fujisaki Chihiro, Hagakure Yasuhiro, Maizono Sayaka, Naegi Makoto, and Ogami Sakura
  • From SDR2: Komaeda Nagito, Nidai Nekomaru, Pekoyama Peko, Sonia Nevermind, Togami Byakuya
  • From V3: Hoshi Ryoma, Iruma Miu, Saihara Shuichi, Tojo Kirumi, Yonaga Angie

Kurokuma and Shirokuma from Ultra Despair Girls also serve as Monokuma's subordinates. The story as a whole contains various Late-Arrival Spoilers for the series, such as acknowledging during the prologue that there's a different mastermind responsible for this world's circumstances.

Danganronpa: Camp Kuma! contains examples of:

  • Adaptational Villainy: Sakura becomes the first culprit.
  • All for Nothing: Following the first trial, Monokuma casually reveals that the culprit's loved ones were already long gone, much to the dismay of most of those present.
  • Alternate Universe Fic: The setting clearly differs considerably from canon, gradually revealing details to the reader in bits and pieces. Particularly during the Interludes that focus on things unfolding outside of the camp.
  • Amnesia Missed a Spot:
    • Downplayed with Makoto, who recalls slightly more than the other students about events prior to their arrival at Camp Kuma. In particular, he remembers that he was specifically part of Class 78, and looking up some of his future classmates online, along with crossing the school's threshold for the first time.
    • Later on, he starts to remember more details, such as there being a Tragedy of some kind.
  • An Arm and a Leg:
    • The first victim had both of their hands cut off to prevent them from scratching up the culprit any more than she already had.
    • During the second arc, Yasuhiro loses their right hand to Peko's blade.
  • Anyone Can Die: Not only are the students trapped at Camp Kuma all at risk, Monokuma makes clear that he won't hesitate to axe Kurokuma or Shirokuma if he decides they aren't worth keeping around anymore.
  • Armor-Piercing Question:
    • When asked if they're proud of their actions, the first culprit declares that they aren't... but draw some comfort from the knowledge that her family is safe... only for Monokuma to ask "Huh? When did I ever say that they were safe?"
    • During the second investigation, Chihiro strikes a nerve by asking Monokuma "F-for all the foresight that you put into the rules and stuff, you still managed to have a lot of trouble with all the S-Sakura stuff, huh?" Monokuma gives him a Death Glare, but retreats without another word.
    • When Junko experiences her first Scrum Debate, she asks "You guys had the budget and tech for this bullshit, but managed to fuck up the memory-wipe? This mastermind fucking sucks!" Monokuma looks ready to argue, but silently concedes the point.
    • When Byakuya angrily rejects Peko's suggestion that Monokuma hasn't given them a third motive because somebody is already planning something, her retort causes both him and Kirumi to fall silent:
Byakuya: If someone's already planning something, then they're doing a damn good job of hiding it...! No one is acting strange! I refuse to believe that someone can be conspiring to commit murder, and remain completely undetected!
Peko: Did you suspect Sakura or Sayaka prior to them committing murder? Did you suspect Miu or I, before we attempted our murders?
  • Armor-Piercing Response:
    • When Kirumi calls out the stupidity of attempting to blackmail someone from a yakuza clan, Yasuhiro angrily points out what they lost as a result and declares "I think that this goes way beyond the punishment fitting the crime!" Kirumi gapes at them before sincerely apologizing.
    • As Kirumi and Peko are forging a Commonality Connection over how they've devoted their lives to serving others, Ryoma sends them both into a Stunned Silence with one such remark:
Kirumi: Precisely. We exist to uphold what others cannot. It's not about us.
Ryoma: Maybe. Or maybe it's just easier to hide behind obligation than to face yourself in the mirror.
  • Blackmail:
    • Discussed after Monokuma reveals that one of the students is a traitor, as it's speculated that he's forcing their hand in this fashion. Said suspicions are correct.
    • Comes into play again during the second motive, when Yasuhiro tries and fails to use Peko's motive video to finesse some kind of arrangement with her regarding his debt to the Kuzuryu Clan.
  • Broken Pedestal:
    • The revelation of the first culprit's identity naturally shatters those closest to them, with Shuichi being hit the hardest.
    • During the second trial, Junko is disgusted to learn that Sakura had originally planned to kill Yasuhiro, considering him to be the weakest link amongst the students.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: Comes with the territory for Danganronpa:
    • The first culprit, Sakura, faces the Warrior's Last Stand, forced to fight various Monokumas. While the first nineteen are unarmed, the twentieth has a riot shield, and she finds herself facing other models with more armaments until she's finally confronted by the body of her beloved Kenshiro, which is destroyed alongside her.
    • The second culprit is forced to make one Final Performance on a stage rigged with booby traps, dodging, bobbing and weaving around spears launching from the floor and walls. Every time she's hit, the crowd of Monokumas watching her boo and jeer. Though Sayaka lasts a good half hour, she ultimately collapses and is speared all the way through.
  • A Day in the Limelight: While Junko is the main protagonist, the story occasionally switches to different perspectives, such as when Yasuhiro takes over while Junko is incapacitated for the first investigation and trial.
  • Death by Adaptation:
    • Iruma Miu gets murdered three chapters earlier than in canon, ending up as the first victim rather than the fourth.
    • Ogami Sakura is executed as the blackened of Chapter 1, instead of committing suicide in Chapter 4.
    • Naegi Makoto, a survivor in the canon Trigger Happy Havoc, winds up as the second victim.
  • Didn't See That Coming: While distributing the second motive, Monokuma complains that his original plans for it were heavily complicated by one of the hostages dying, something he blames on the mastermind's lack of foresight.
  • Didn't Think This Through:
    • Despite wanting the students to believe they all belong to the same class, the mastermind decided to include Makoto and Nagito. Both are Lucky Students who entered the school via a yearly lottery, with only one winner chosen per year.
    • After the motive videos for the second trial are distributed, Yasuhiro gets the bright idea of confronting the owner of the motive they received alone and trying to blackmail them. Even Pekoyama herself admits that they were caught off guard because they assumed that any such scheme would be staged in public to prevent immediate retaliation.
  • Dies Differently in Adaptation:
    • Iruma Miu winds up becoming the first victim of the killing game, by virtue of being caught in the act of trying to break into Junko's cabin.
    • Ogami Sakura is executed as the first culprit.
    • Maizono Sayaka becomes the second culprit.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Both Kurokuma and Shirokuma have moments that Invoke this, implying that they don't approve of everything their Bad Boss is doing.
    • When Monokuma gleefully reveals that Sakura's loved ones are all dead after the first trial, Kurokuma regards him with an unreadable expression while whispering "No fuckin' way... Dude, that's way too far."
    • Kurokuma is similarly horrified to hear that the hostages for the second motive were set free in Towa City.
  • Exact Words:
    • This works both ways with the traitor. While said traitor was told they would have to kill when ordered, Monokuma didn't stipulate that they couldn't kill of their own accord, much to the bear's clear annoyance. However, Monokuma also provided False Reassurance in this fashion.
    • After the second trial, Byakuya points out that Monokuma could explain what was going on with Makoto's mysterious illness. Monokuma cheerfully agrees that "I probably could do that!", but naturally refuses to.
    • He also reassures everyone that their respective hostages "are no longer confined anywhere", before casually telling a curious Kurokuma that they were let out in Towa City, causing the black bear to freeze up.
  • First-Name Basis: Discussed after the campers realize just how comfortable they are addressing each other in this fashion despite having barely met each other, lending credence to the theory that they're missing memories.
  • Forced to Watch: The survivors are meant to watch the executions all the way to the end. However, this is Played With when Yasuhiro discovers that the exit was unlocked during the second execution, allowing everyone to leave... but Nagito, Shuichi and Junko stay behind just in case Sayaka happened to be the mastermind.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes:
    • While reviewing her initial assessments of everyone early in the first arc, Junko notes that she still likes Miu despite her getting into several arguments, but that she doubts anybody else cares much for the hot-tempered and foul-mouthed inventor.
    • Nagito cements himself as such with his antics during the first trial, and keeps digging himself ever deeper with his Lack of Empathy and smug attitude.
    • In the wake of the second trial, Pekoyama appears to self-exile from the other survivors, making a point of avoiding them as much as possible. Most of the others seem okay with this, aside from expressing concern that they might hurt somebody else.
  • The Gadfly: Nagito repeatedly provokes the others with his casually callous and inflammatory behavior, all supposedly in the name of "testing their Hope". He very clearly recognizes how much he upsets the others and does not care so long as he's able to twist things around in his head to suit his desires.
  • Hesitation Equals Dishonesty: Hiro Invokes this outright during a conversation with Byakuya and Sonia about whether or not he believes in the supernatural:
Sonia: But Byakuya, surely you believe in some things beyond logic. Love, perhaps? Honour? The divine right of monarchs?
    Byakuya: ...That's irrelevant.
Yasuhiro: [snapping his fingers] Aha! That was hesitation! You do believe in something weird! C'mon, spill. Secretly a fan of horoscopes? Ever seen a UFO?
  • I Have Your Wife: Serves as the second motive, as well as the reason Monokuma targeted Sakura early on: the last of her hostages had actually passed away, and he didn't want her to learn this until it was too late.
  • I Lied: After the second trial is resolved, Junko privately asks Nagito if he ever truly believed that Makoto was suspicious. Nagito cheerfully replies that of course he didn't, taking the opportunity to Speak Ill of the Dead once again.
  • Implied Death Threat:
    • Following the second trial, Monokuma tells Kurokuma that they're using a three-strike system:
Monokuma: Two more, and you're gone, bucko!
Kurokuma: [excited] By 'gone', do you mean I'll be let outta the game!?
Monokuma: [bemused] I mean... in a way, yes!
Kurokuma: ...I fuckin' dislike those implications...
    • Komaeda attempts to convince Kirumi, Peko and Ryoma to devote themselves to 'Hope'. When Kirumi implicitly refuses, he gives her a dark look in reponse:
Kirumi: And what if we choose duty over hope?
Nagito: [softly, putting a hand over his heart as his smile turns cold] Then I pity you.
  • Incurable Cough of Death: Nekomaru develops a persistent cough that only worsens over time. Though they insist that it's "just a tickle" rather than anything serious.
  • Jerkass Has a Point:
    • Invoked by Nagito during the second trial, when he takes advantage of Chihiro admitting that he can't make anything with the mechanical scraps he found to suggest the first culprit was right in their assessment of Yasuhiro's overall usefulness, and that it would have been better for everyone if they'd killed Yasuhiro instead of Miu.
    • Following the second trial, Junko agrees with Nagito's sneering suggestion that the culprit is exaggerating how ill Makoto had become in an attempt to garner sympathy from the others.
    • Nagito gets another moment of this when he suggests that Monokuma's prolonged absence is because he's banking on somebody killing without an official motive as prompting. As Kurokuma puts it:
Kurokuma: I mean, the jackass has a point! If the boss is gone, maybe this is a test to see if you'll all still dance without the music playin', you feel me?
  • Lack of Empathy: Nagito, Nagito, Nagito. His Hope-obsessed Blue-and-Orange Morality remains in full play, and he swiftly becomes The Friend Nobody Likes in the wake of the first trial with how casually he dismisses the thoughts, hopes and feelings of anyone other than himself.
  • Let Me Get This Straight...:
    • Kirumi asks this during the second arc, upon learning exactly how Yasuhiro got his hand lopped off.
    • Nekomaru says this nearly word for word when Sonia suggests that Peko attacked Yasuhiro as an attempt to distract from her murdering Makoto during the second trial.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Supposedly, Monokuma keeps Kurokuma and Shirokuma largely in the dark regarding much of what's happening, telling them things strictly on a 'need-to-know' basis.
  • Mathematician's Answer: When Junko runs a makeshift woodworking course, she gives two of these in rapid succession:
Angie: Is that how we are supposed to do it? Or are you just making it up as you go along?
    Junko: Yes.
    Kirumi: Yes to which question...?
    Junko: Yes.
  • Mercy Kill: Invoked and Discussed when Sayaka claims this is why they chose to smother Makoto. Nagito accuses them of lying about the severity of his illness in an effort to garner sympathy.
  • Moment Killer: Nagito functions as one when he 'luckily happens across' Kirumi, Peko and Ryoma having some tea together and promptly invites himself to join them, casually revealing that he was eavesdropping the whole time.
  • Never Recycle Your Schemes: Discussed during the third arc. Peko points out that "No one would consider killing if all killing did was delay the inevitable, so it's unlikely that Monokuma would reuse a motive."
  • Not-So-Omniscient Council of Bickering: Monokuma does not exactly get along with the mastermind, to the point that he outright reveals their existence to the students during the second arc as revenge for how badly they'd botched the matter of Sakura's motive.
  • Oblivious Guilt Slinging: Yasuhiro and Sonia engage in this when the former suggest that one of the campers isn't who they claim to be in front of Byakuya.
  • Oh, Crap!: Monokuma starts panicking at the end of the first trial, when Sakura starts chasing him around the trial chamber.
  • Paranoia Gambit: Monokuma is quite fond of these:
    • His first motive involves informing the students that he just recruited a traitor amongst their ranks the night before, encouraging them to suspect each other.
    • Not long afterwards, he reveals that the mastermind is hiding amongst them as well, seemingly out of anger and frustration at said mastermind leaving him to deal with the whole debacle with one of the hostages dying all by himself.
    • After presenting the students with their reward for the second trial, Monokuma stops making any appearances or announcements, leaving them to wonder about the break in routine and speculate about just what he's planning.
  • Opportunistic Bastard: Nagito interrupts a conversation where Ryoma, Peko and Kirumi were Contemplating Their Navels and attempts to convince them to devote themselves to serving him and his twisted concept of 'Hope'.
Peko: [regarding Komaeda] He speaks like a man already drowning... trying to pull others under to justify the water...
  • Saying Too Much: Kurokuma seems prone to this due to his Motor Mouth tendencies.
  • Speak Ill of the Dead:
    • Nagito adores doing this; as far as he's concerned, anyone who dies doesn't deserve even the slightest respect. Their Hope just wasn't strong enough, after all~! He's especially pleased when poor Makoto dies, as he deeply disliked having to treat them with anything vaguely resembling respect in the first place.
    • Junko also engages in this after hearing that Sakura planned to kill Yasuhiro because she considered him the "weakest link" and the one who contributed the least to the group.
  • The Stinger: The second arc ends with two: one of the survivors watches the motive video on Iruma Miu's Monophone, only to hear Monokuma declare said video is for the Ultimate Imposter. The second scene is set before the trial, and depicts somebody implied to be Nagito stumbling into an area that holds all the executions, finding sixteen mortuary freezers and taking something from one of the bodies there.
  • Switching P.O.V.: While the story is primarily from Junko's perspective, it regularly swaps to other characters. One of the longest such stretches comes when Junko is incapacitated and misses the first trial, following the POV of Yasuhiro instead.
  • Touché:
    • Junko incredulously questions how Yasuhiro got Held Back in School for four years, only for him to calmly repeat what he'd already told her: he guessed the answers on every single test. Junko considers this, then nods and admits "Touché. Touché."
    • Upon hearing that Monokuma has been working with "the Ultimate Hope or sumshit", Junko questions what kind of talent that is, only for Kurokuma to retort "What kinda talent is the Ultimate Princess? Or hell, the Ultimate Lucky Student? There's two of those bastards here!" Junko again nods and agrees with "Touché. Touché."
    • When Hiro questions Angie painting the front of her cabin, Junko asks "Where else was she supposed to do it?", prompting this response.
  • The Unapologetic:
    • Played With in the wake of the first trial, as the culprit claims that while they're not proud of their actions, they don't regret what they did since she believes it saved the lives of her loved ones. Then Monokuma reveals that their actions were All for Nothing.
    • Pekoyama refuses to apologize for cutting off Yasuhiro's hand while attempting to kill him, stating that while they regret how things played out, she would do anything for the sake of her young master.
    • Nagito is a completely unapologetic Jerkass in general, not caring how his actions impact those around him so long as he can self-justify everything as being in the name of "strengthening their Hope through adversity".
  • Villainous Breakdown: The second culprit launches a Cluster F-Bomb when cornered, furiously pointing the finger at others while insisting there's nothing that decisively proves they were responsible. Following The Summation, they let out a Rapid-Fire "No!" and start frantically begging the others not to vote.
  • Villains Never Lie:
    • Monokuma claims that "Bears don't lie". For all his reliance upon Exact Words and False Reassurances, he still stubbornly insists that he never outright lies to the students.
    • This gets heavily Discussed and debated when he reveals the second motive; Monokuma admits that he'd originally meant for it to be the first, but felt obligated to push it back until he could figure out how to handle the minor matter of Sakura's hostage dying from his terminal illness. While the students call him out on being a Manipulative Bastard, he claims that he went out of his way to avoid lying to Sakura about her ability to save her loved ones.
  • Was It All a Lie?: After the first culprit is exposed, Shuichi tearfully questions whether anything they said or did was true:
Shuichi: Did it mean anything? Anything at all? Your — your kind words, your helpfulness, your friendship... how you made me feel like I was worth a damn... Was it all a lie?
  • Who Murdered the Asshole?: Junko muses about the possibility of this after Miu gets into several major arguments over the course of several hours, noting that she could get targeted due to people holding grudges against her. Miu herself seems to recognize the danger, leading to her apologizing to everyone the following day.
  • Who Would Want to Watch Us?: Discussed seriously during the third arc, when Shuichi suggests that they actually have an audience aside from Monokuma and the other bears.
  • You Monster!: After Monokuma taunts the first culprit with the news that her family and loved ones were all already dead, several of the other students angrily condemn him. Loudest of all is the culprit themselves, who lets out a roar of "You... you BASTARD!"
