Danganronpa 2 Re:Captured
is a in-progress fanfiction rewrite story written by the user Creepercraftguy
on Wattpad inspired by Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair and the sequel to Danganronpa Re:Programmed. The story follows the same original cast of sixteen students who have been held captive by Monokuma and forced to participate in a 'killing school trip' indefinitely. The only way of escape is to kill someone and get away with it. The difference here is that not only do the people who die in the story differ from the original game, the role of protagonist is given to Mahiru Koizumi, the Ultimate Photographer, instead of Hajime Hinata, who forgot his talent.
Due to the story exceeding Wattpad's chapter limit on their site, the author was forced to split off Chapters 5 and 6 into their own separate fanfiction. The second part can be read here
.
The story can also be found on Archive of Our Own here
.
Tropes:
- Abusive Parents: A few of the characters are implied to have this through their dialogue, most notably Gundham, Hiyoko, Mikan, and even Mahiru herself.
- Accidental Murder: In Chapter 2, when Kazuichi comes to inspect Fuyuhiko, he mocks his cowardice so much to the point that he attacks him in a fit of rage. While the two got in a tussle, Kazuichi slams Fuyuhiko’s head too hard on the bed frame, killing him instantly. Downplayed, as the group discussed earlier, the lock mechanism Kazuichi made earlier was designed to break itself, so he could frame Peko and enact his murder plan if he had the chance.
- Actor Allusion:
- Mixed with a Mythology Gag. In Chapter 3, just like Kaede did in V3. When Ibuki is accused as the culprit of Mikan’s murder, she suddenly turns silent, before perking up, shouting that she was kidding. Gundham would parrot back, "Just kidding?" referencing Ryoma’s line from the original scene. It’s funny enough that both Gundham and Ryoma are voiced by the same actor.
- In Chapter 4, after coming off from a thrilling rollercoaster ride, Mahiru collapses on the floor, frightened from that experience. But then Chiaki walks up to her, and bluntly commands ger to "Get off that dirty ass floor. God, you’re dramatic...". Mahiru was startled from Chiaki’s sudden apathy. Chiaki, apologizes, as she felt like one of those "magical girl mascot characters". A reference to Christine Marie Cabanos (Chiaki’s VA) and her role as Hoshi in Pretty Pretty Please I Don't Want to Be a Magical Girl.
- A-Cup Angst: A running joke in the story is that Mahiru is sensitive about her smaller chest size and body shape compared to more full-bodied girls like Sonia, Akane, and Chiaki.
- Adaptational Angst Upgrade: In this fic, Hajime has more of a sarcastic wit, and a bigger temper. He's also much more stand-offish, and is willing to pick fights to defend the people he cares about.
- Adaptational Intelligence: Mahiru is by no means unintelligent, but in the original game, she claims not to be especially smart, and since she's only around for one Class Trial, we never really see the full scope of her intellect. Here though, she lives for a lot longer, and we see that she's more observant than she gives herself credit for. For example, in Chapter 2, when Mahiru and Hajime found out that Nagito was released from the abandoned building. Mahiru suspects Nagito's alibi. While he may have been chained for the majority of the chapter, Monomi never told them when she released him, so within that time gap he could’ve committed the murder.
- Adaptational Jerkass: Downplayed. While Hiyoko was always a selfish jerk, in the original, she slowly began to mature after Mahiru’s death, becoming more friendly toward others, until her arc was cut short when Mikan murdered her. In this fic, with Mahiru still alive, Hiyoko remains a spoiled brat. She also holds a deep grudge against Peko, who had previously attempted to kill Mahiru. At one point, Hiyoko even goes so far as to tell Peko to kill herself. However, Mahiru snaps and calls out Hiyoko’s selfishness. Feeling betrayed by her friend, Hiyoko isolates herself from the group and declares that she will escape the island on her own. Her plan fails, leaving her weak and lonely. Fortunately, she avoids meeting a tragic fate in the middle of the third trial, and begins to develop again from there.
- Adaptational Protagonist: Re:Captured, like its prequel, is a fanfic based on the Danganronpa series, specifically Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair, with the protagonist now being Mahiru Koizumi. In the original game, Mahiru was mostly a side character who gets taken out of the game as early as Chapter 2, being killed by Peko Pekoyama. But here, she takes on the primary position of group leader for the others, leading the debates to identify the true killer, and her canonical death is averted.
- Adaptational Villainy: Downplayed:
- Fuyuhiko misses out on their canonical character development due to being murdered shortly after his attempt to kill Mahiru fails. However, Mahiru still feels sympathy towards them, recognizing that the Twilight Syndrome game targeted him personally.
- Kazuchi attempts to pass off their murder as something noble rather than selfish.
- And Now for Someone Completely Different: The Chapter 3 Deadly Life and Class Trial is told from Hiyoko's POV due to Mahiru falling into a coma after getting impaled at the end of Daily Life.
- Anyone Can Die: Needless to mention. It's still Danganronpa, even if the plot is a little different. At any time, any of your favorite characters could die.
- Armor-Piercing Question: Mahiru gives one to Nagito right before the fourth trial after Nagito spends the majority of the Deadly Life mocking Hajime for being a talentless Reserve Course student:Mahiru: The reason I'm angry is because of how much Hajime has grown, and the kind of person he's become. When we first got here, I had my doubts, and so did a lot of the others. You honestly think that just because he doesn't have a talent, we should look down on him?
Nagito: Of course! It's your right as an Ultimate! How else would the world make sense? Don't you understand?
Mahiru: All right then...let me ask you this, Komaeda. If Hajime is so useless, so...insignificant...so far beneath people like you and me...Then why the hell did I fall in love with him? - Ascended Extra: In the original Danganronpa 2, the protagonist/main hero of the story is Hajime Hinata, who survives to the end of the game and rescues everyone from the killing game. In this, it's Mahiru Koizumi, who for all intents and purposes, was a fairly minor character originally, that died early in the game.
- Ask a Stupid Question...: In Chapter 2, Monokuma comes to the lobby to report that one of his Monobeasts had vanished.Mahiru: What do you mean that it vanished? You mean it just... disappeared?
Monokuma: No, it got compressed into a bottle of dish cleaner, OF COURSE I mean it disappeared! - Asshole Victim:
- Fuyuhiko. He dies before he goes through any of his important character development, and ends his time in the story on a relatively low note; attempting to murder Mahiru and antagonizing Kazuichi, which ultimately leads to his untimely, but well-deserved, demise.
- Especially applies to Mikan, though is also Downplayed. In Chapter 3, Mikan hatches a plan to take advantage of both the groups' affection for her, as well as their dislike of Hiyoko; executing a plan where she brutally injures Mahiru, and then forces a brainwashed Ibuki to sedate her, in an attempt to trick everyone into voting Hiyoko as the killer so they all die. Downplayed, since her actions are largely caused by the Despair Disease, and while her motive to appeal to her beloved remains the same, her plan has the added layer of killing everyone but Ibuki so that Ibuki can escape the island.
- Being Personal Isn't Professional: It's surprisingly rare to see the students completely united in the early chapters of the story. As he does in canon, Fuyuhiko refuses to mingle or interact with the group early on, and after his death, Peko adopts the same methodology, though not out of spite for the others. Then, in Chapter 3, once Peko rejoins the group, Hiyoko almost immediately leaves it out of spite for her and Mahiru.
- Better to Die than Be Killed: Once Monokuma preparers Kazuichi's punishment. Kazuichi begs of Peko to finish him off, before Monokuma executes him. For he would rather suffer a quick death, than to be horribly killed by Monokuma, but unfortunately, Peko cannot make the kill.
- Beware the Nice Ones: Mikan, though the victim of Chapter 3, is the one who ultimately masterminds the case. Under the effects of the Despair Disease, she takes advantage of everyone's trust of her, as well as everyone's distrust of Hiyoko, and uses it to manipulate everyone into voting wrong at the trial so they would all die. Her plan involves her becoming the victim, making them think Hiyoko killed her in a defenceless state, when in reality, she manipulated Ibuki into doing it, while also trying to trick everyone into believing Mikan did the crime to herself as a backup plan. Nagito even claims she is the most dangerous threat the group have faced on the island so far.
- The Big Damn Kiss: In Chapter 5 when Mahiru and Hajime lock lips for the first time. There's even a custom-made CG for it.
- Big "SHUT UP!": Some notable examples:
- Mahiru to Hiyoko during Chapter 3's daily life after she threatens Peko.
- Ibuki to Nagito during Chapter 3's deadly life after he badmouths the late Mikan, despite her planning to trick everyone into getting executed.
- Blonde, Brunette, Redhead: The story's seemingly three main characters; Hiyoko Saionji [Blonde], Hajime Hinata [Burnette], and Mahiru Koizumi [Redhead].
- Blunt "Yes": In Chapter 2, Monokuma arrives to the lobby and asks Hajime for a coffee.Hajime: And what will you do if I refuse to make you one? Kill me?
Monokuma: Yes.
Hajime: Wha-really!?
[Hajime stammered, his hand instinctively reaching towards the coffee machine, ready to make a cup of "please-let-me-live coffee"; Monokuma cackled]
Monokuma: No! Not really! What kinda lame-ass death would THAT be!? - Break the Cutie: Genki Girl Ibuki, becomes devastated when she finds the corpse of her girlfriend, Mikan.Ibuki Mioda stood at the entrance, her usual chaotic energy nowhere to be found. The moment she stepped inside, her wide, shimmering eyes locked onto the terrified, lifeless face of Mikan Tsumiki.
For once, Ibuki had no words.
Her mouth opened slightly, as if to say something...but for once, nothing came out. Her fingers curled into fists at her sides.
Then...the tears started.
They welled up in her eyes, spilling over before she could even think to wipe them away. Droplets splashed onto the cold floor as she trembled in place, her breaths coming in soft, shaky gasps. - Breaking the Fourth Wall:
- Like the original, when Monokuma redesigns Usami, and changes her name to Monomi, she becomes shocked that the author of the book is now referring her as "Monomi".
- When Nagito proposes for everyone to vote wrong and die, Ibuki complains that they still have six more chapters to deal with.
- When Monomi reveals that she’s defeated the Monobeast she comments that she’ll explain it more in a minigame of the original game the fanfic is based on.
- When the students come across the futuristic door, Chiaki comments that they’re a sequel early to deal with such space stuff.
- When Monokuma presents Twilight Syndrome Murder Case, Hiyoko is uninterested, as she prefers the videogames where she plays as a puzzle-solving professor, or where she collects creatures to make cool tricks with. But before she could describe any further, Monokuma shuts her up, to avoid lawsuit. Nekomaru chimes in that since they’re in a fanfic of the original game, they don’t really have to worry about copyright.
- Hajime gets freaked out when Peko starts speaking with text emotes in her Sparkling Justice facade.
- In Chapter 3, when Ibuki arrives to the Music Venue, she becomes so excited she starts repeating her sentences, and hopes her behavior doesn’t foreshadow any tragic events this chapter.
- When Mikan reveals that she didn’t deny Ibuki’s love request, Ibuki is unsure about it, as she read said chapter, and points out that she screamed "no" 9-10 times.
- Brick Joke: In the first morning of Chapter 2, Monokuma bluntly threatens to kill Hajime, when he refuses to fix him a cup of coffee. He uses that same joke on Mahiru in Chapter 3, when she refuses to watch the movie screening in Usami Theatre, only for her to callout for reusing the same material.Mahiru: W-Wait a second...! We made this joke before! Get new material, you stupid bear!
- Cabin Fever: Standard Danganronpa fare. This happens quite a few times in the main series, and the rewrite is no exception.
- Call-Back:
- During the third trial, Chiaki tricks Monokuma into revealing that the person who killed Mikan was the same person who stabbed Mahiru the same way that Chihiro tricked Monokuma in the first story into revealing that the Hope's Peak sauna contained no cameras.Monokuma: URRGH! You little SHIT! I hope you remember those rules I told you about, because they're the ONLY goddamn reason you're still BREATHING! Christ...You're just like your father, you know that!?
- During the third trial, Chiaki tricks Monokuma into revealing that the person who killed Mikan was the same person who stabbed Mahiru the same way that Chihiro tricked Monokuma in the first story into revealing that the Hope's Peak sauna contained no cameras.
- Campfire Character Exploration: The Freetime Events. There is at least one free-time segment in each chapter where each character interacts with the others, lending them further personality and occasionally even exploring their pasts.
- Cannot Tell a Lie: Hajime, when infected with the Despair Disease, is unable to say anything but the truth, regardless of if it's appropriate to say it.
- Can't Get Away with Nuthin': As in all Danganronpa games, the murderer faces a cruel and harsh execution if they are found guilty during the class trial.
- Catchphrase Interruptus: At the start of every trial, Monokuma quotes the basic trial grounds for each case. However, this gets cut short in the third trial, when Akane immediately accuses Hiyoko as the culprit.Monokuma: GAG! SPLUTTER! AAH! H-Hey!? What the hell, Owari!? I wasn't done with the introduction!
Hajime: Does it really matter? You say the same thing every time we do one of these. I think we all know the rules by now.
[Monokuma pauses, then lets out a huff]
Monokuma: Eh...you're right! Who cares about this boring explanation? Let's get on with it already! - City in a Bottle: Like in normal DR, the entire story takes place on Jabberwock Island; an archipelago of 6 islands where the students are sealed off from the outside world.
- Corpse Temperature Tampering: Similar to the original, in Chapter 2, when investigating Fuyuhiko’s corpse, Mikan is unable to figure out the time of death, as the culprit messed with the AC unit to delay the rotting process.
- Courtroom Episode: Every class trial segment of a Chapter.
- Criminal Mind Games: Almost everything Monokuma/the Mastermind does to the students.
- Cruel and Unusual Death: Chapter 2, Sin and Punishments, Sea and Coconuts, has Kazuichi Soda, the Ultimate Mechanic, undergo "Underground Travels!" Two burly Monokumas force Kazuichi into a massive drilling machine. While Kazuichi is placed in the cockpit, the machine begins to drill further into the earth, as Kazuichi burns from the heating machine, and suffocates from the lack of oxygen. Once the machine reaches to the earth’s core, it explodes upon impact, as the molten mental and melting flesh of Kazuichi’s corpse is absorbed by the core.
- Day in the Life: Chapters are split into three segments: Daily Life, Deadly Life and Class Trial. The first of which, as the name implies, shows the day to day events of the student's lives at Jabberwock Island.
- Deadly Game: The class trial rules are the exact same in the fic as they are in the original game series. The killing game revolves around sixteen students who are stranded on Jabberwock Island under the control of Monokuma. They are forced to live a communal lifestyle together under a set amount of rules for the rest of their lives, although it is possible to "disrupt the peace" in order to escape. In order to do this, a student must murder another student, and get away with the crime.
- Deadly Graduation: After a killing has taken place, the students must work together and investigate to reveal the culprit, dubbed as the "blackened". After a period of time of investigating, Monokuma will initiate a class trial, where the remaining students present their arguments in a court room and try to find out who the blackened is among them. Once the students decide on a conclusion, Monokuma will start the "voting time", where the students vote on the identity of a blackened. If the majority of the students' votes are wrong, then the blackened can leave the island, while the remaining students get executed. However, if the majority of the students choose correctly, then the blackened alone will be executed and the remaining students will remain unharmed.
- Death by Adaptation:
- Fuyuhiko and Kazuichi, both survivors in canon, die as the Chapter 2 victim and culprit, respectively.
- Downplayed for Mikan as she still dies in Chapter 3, but as the victim.
- Akane and Sonia, both survivors in canon, die as the Chapter 4 victim and culprit, respectively.
- Dies Wide Open: Mikan's eyes in her corpse CG are open and bloodshot, due to how she died from drug overdose.
- Dissonant Serenity: Though they are the culprit of Chapter 3, and though she was brainwashed and manipulated by Mikan; the person she trusted more than anyone, in killing her as part of her plan to execute everyone using the trial rules, Ibuki is surprisingly calm and cheerful about being outed as the killer, so long as it means Mikan's plan failed and everyone gets to live.
- Divide and Conquer: Students cannot be harmed directly by Monokuma. Instead, he incites conflict between them, which leads to pandemonium.
- Driving Question: Many of them centre on the identity of the Mastermind, the supposed "Traitor", and the reality of the outside world, and the majority of them are unchanged from canon.
- Dying Declaration of Love: Ibuki's final moments are her exchanging compliments and advice with everyone in the courtroom, before she screams out her love for Mikan.
- Elseworld: The entire story is one big "what-if."
- Entertainingly Wrong: When the remaining survivors get Monokuma's notes on the Hope's Peak Killing Game after going on the rollercoaster at Jabberwock Park, Mahiru looks at the files of the survivors and immediately assumes Chihiro's a girl.
- Everyone Has Standards: In serious moments, Ibuki will tone down her energetic attitude to speak through some people.
- Everyone Meets Everyone: You can't make Danganronpa without its characters, and you can't show off your characters without a rousing round of introductions. These are shown in the prologue.
- Exact Words:
- When Mahiru meets up with the girls at the beach house to go swimming, she asks where Mikan and Ibuki’s swimsuits are. Ibuki joking answers that she’s not wearing any underwear right now, before Mikan clarifies that they’re wearing their swimsuits under their clothes.
- When Mahiru and the others arrive to investigate the Twilight Syndrome Murder Case motive, Gundham blocks them from playing. He reminds Mahiru that she was the one who ordered him not to let anyone play the game—not even herself.
- When Mahiru figures out that Peko had broken into Fuyuhiko's cottage, everyone else is quick to label them the murderer... until Mahiru stops the vote, pointing out that while she'd confirmed that they'd broken in, that didn't mean the victim was alive when they got there. This helps them figure out the timeline of the murder.
- Fake Alibi: In Chapter 2, when Mahiru asks Kazuichi about Fuyuhiko’s whereabouts before he got murdered, he explains that while he took guard duty with Nekomaru and Sonia, he checked on him during his and Sonia’s shift. Claiming that he was alive during Sonia’s shift. But later, Mahiru pins Kazuichi as the killer as she realizes that Kazuichi’s account is suspicious. When Peko revealed that she broke in Fuyuhiko’s cabin, Fuyuhiko was already dead, and broke out of his cottage, which Nekomaru can account for. So within that timeline, Fuyuhiko should’ve been dead during Kazuichi’s second shift, figuring out that Kazuichi killed him on his first shift.
- Feud Episode: In Chapter 3, Mahiru lets rip into Hiyoko about her cruel and cocky behaviour, and tries to put a stop to it. This causes Hiyoko to defect from the rest of the group and fly solo, coming to resent her former best friend.
- Fourth-Wall Observer: In this fic, Ibuki is a lot more aware of the fourth wall, and oftenly changes the mood when she comments about it.
- Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse:
- This is further developed at the end of Chapter 1. Like the original, Teruteru reveals that he intended to murder Nagito so he wouldn’t start his murder plan, and didn’t mean to kill Byakuya. Monokuma malevolently mocks Teruteru for killing, insisting that when Nagito was preparing to kill, he took it as an opportunity to kill so he wouldn’t get caught. That’s before Mahiru confronts Teruteru herself. While she admits that she doesn’t want Teruteru to get executed, she calls him out for resorting to murder. She states that he could’ve told Byakuya and the others about Nagito’s plan, and they might’ve avoided this event. After Teruteru explains that he killed to see if his home was still okay, he takes responsibility for his actions, and laments himself for what he’s done.Teruteru: Like I said... I'm not going to pretend like what I did was justified, regardless of whether my reason was t-to save you all, OR t-to see M-Momma again... I did an a-a-awful thing... but... I-I wanted to... confirm it... by any means necessary... That's when I heard Nagito's plan. I-I found out he wanted to kill someone, and there's no way I could've left him alone. That's why...why...that's...why...
Monokuma: So, long story short...you wanted the first kill.
Teruteru: I'm... sorry... I'm so so sorry... I never wanted to sacrifice any of you... but it was the only thing I could do... and... I ended up taking the life of an innocent, uninvolved man...I... There's no doubt about it... I think I'M the one who went crazy... - Deconstructed at the end of Chapter 2. After being revealed as the culprit, Kazuichi insists Fuyuhiko was too dangerous to let live. Everyone rejects this, insisting Fuyuhiko had already been apprehended after his and Peko's murder attempt failed. Mahiru insists he should have trusted them, but Kazuichi counters that he trusted her the least, due to her bossiness and constantly berating him for every little mistake... and after she took over as leader, everyone else joined in. Nagito suggests that Kazuichi let their paranoia and fear consume them, and the others are swift to agree, since they were all under the same pressure and didn't give in... until Chiaki starts defending the culprit. While she agrees they were wrong to kill, she states their fear was entirely understandable. They're all trapped in a Deadly Game, learned that they'd lost memories of their time at Hope's Peak, witnessed the deaths of three of their friends, and several of them were nearly killed over something none of them remember. Even if they don't agree with the culprit, they should at least pity them.Chiaki: That doesn't mean what you did was okay, but I can understand why you felt the way you did. And maybe... maybe if we'd all been paying more attention, we could've helped you before it got to this point. I don't think it's right for you to blame Mahiru, but... I'm sorry that we didn't show you how much we cared, Kazuichi. We keep talking about how we could have saved Fuyuhiko or Peko, when... when we really should have been trying to save you...
After Teruteru explains that he killed to see if his home was still okay, he takes responsibility for his actions, and laments himself for what he’s done.
- From Zero to Hero: Every Danganronpa Protagonist in the main series applies to this trope. Mahiru is no exception.
- Groin Attack: When Mahiru, Hiyoko, Hajime, and Chiaki go to investigate The Twilight Syndrome Murder Case, they find Gundham guarding the game. Mahiru asks him to move aside, but he refuses to leave his post, reminding her that she was the one who ordered him not to let anyone play. In response, Hiyoko takes matters into her own hands—by kicking him in the groin. Gundham collapses to the ground, groaning in pain, while the group cringes at the sight.Hiyoko: Well? No more obstacles.
Hajime: That was... harsh...
Chiaki: Yeah, we didn't need to go that far... I think... - Guilty Until Someone Else Is Guilty: Standard procedure in quite a few of the class trials.
- Hero of Another Story: Given one of the posters at the movie theater on Third Island, the protagonists of this universe's version of Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls are Mondo and Taichi Fujisaki, Chihiro's father.
- Hero on Hiatus: In Chapter 3, Mahiru gets stabbed by a mysterious culprit (who we later find out to be Mikan). Because of her injury, she’s unable to participate the trial, leaving Hiyoko to take on the investigation.
- Heroic BSoD: After Kazuichi tells Mahiru before their execution that they didn't trust her due to her constant criticisms of him, combined with learning about her role in the Twilight Syndrome: Murder Case deaths, Mahiru manages to be briefly overwhelmed by guilt, blaming herself for everything.
- Heroic Sacrifice:
- Two instances, both in Chapter 3.
- Downplayed with Mikan. Like in the original game when she murdered Ibuki and Hiyoko, Mikan's motives for setting up her own crime are largely related to her obsession with her "beloved," and she attempts to kill everyone else on the island for the sake of the lustful despair said person gave her. However, on top of this, she also planned to have Ibuki be the one to kill her, so that Ibuki, who she also cared greatly for, would be able to leave the island alive.
- Following on from this, Ibuki does not yield to Mikan's plan, and once the Despair Disease's effects are broken, and she regains control of herself, she subtly works towards exposing Mikan's crimes with the others during the trial, and gives up the chance to escape so that no one else gets sacrificed. She even repeats the same line Mikan gives to her when she opens up about her motives. But you'll live. And that's all that matters.
- In Chapter 4, Akane is killed pushing Mahiru out of the way of the derailed and runaway rollercoaster while Mahiru is trying to activate the emergency power cutoff switch to shut down the malfunctioning and out-of-control amusement park.
- Two instances, both in Chapter 3.
- High Heel Hurt: While Mahiru was heading to the firework festival at the beach, she had difficulty crossing upon the sand while walking in the flimsy sandals, Ibuki provided.Mahiru: [in thoughts] How does Hiyoko DO this every day!?
- History Repeats: Invoked by Nagito during the Chapter 4 investigation while pointing out how some of the details of the cases from their Killing Game reflect things that happened during the first story's Killing Game:Nagito: The first murder involved someone important getting stabbed to death in an unexpected locationnote ...just like how Byakuya died. The second murder revealed the presence of a serial killer among the groupnote ...kind of like how Peko pretended to be. And the third murder...well, it involved someone manipulating another student into committing the crimenote . Not unlike how Mikan used Ibuki.
- Idiot Hair:
- As The Protagonist of the story, Mahiru's design is upgraded to include an unkempt strand of hair, just as all Danganronpa protagonists, including Chihiro from the prequel fic, possess.
- When she becomes the protagonist briefly during Chapter 3's Deadly Life, Hiyoko gains one of her own. However, she pats it down at the end of the chapter.
- Unlike Makoto who loses his ahoge in the prequel fic Danganronpa Re:Programmed due to not being the protagonist anymore, Hajime gets to keep his signature lock, despite being downgraded to the Deuteragonist.
- In Spite of a Nail:
- The first death is still Imposter!Byakuya getting killed by Teruteru.
- Ibuki and Mikan still catch the Despair Disease, and the latter executes a murder plan just as she does in the original.
- Mikan and Ibuki still die in Chapter 3.
- Nagito still gets the Funhouse prize in Chapter 4 by playing Russian Roulette allowing him to find out that Hajime has no talent and is merely a Reserve Course student and that they were all members of Ultimate Despair.
- One half of the Sondam pairing still kills one-half of the training duo in Chapter 4, though who kills who and the motive behind it is quite different.
- Lampshade Hanging:
- Besides Hajime, Mahiru is one of the more normal students on the island, and is mainly takes charge of questioning about weird events. For example, when Usami came back in her Monomial form, Mahiru snarks if Monokuma had just remodeled all her spare copies in the one night he got here.
- Hajime also takes part in questioning things. After since he turned in his protagonist role, along with a boost of sarcasm, he mainly speaks out what comes in his mind, like when he calls out Mahiru for scolding him, when they've just met each other.
- In a funnier variant, Ibuki takes part in lampshading things, while breaking the fourth wall. She even wonders if she has become a mascot character herself.
- This fanfic also references some common fan discussions regarding the original game. Such as Gundham’s questionable title, Mikan somehow performing her murder plan in unrealistic speed and Sonia claiming to have lost her virginity, despite being a teenager.
- Living Is More than Surviving: Sonia's motivation for committing murder in Chapter 4. After Monokuma showed the remaining survivors the state of the outside world as a result of the Biggest, Most Tragic Despair-Inducing Event in Human History and Mahiru, Hiyoko, Gundham, Nekomaru, Peko, Akane, and Chiaki accept Hajime's proposal to spend the rest of their lives on Jabberwock Island if there's truly nothing for them out there, she ends up sabotaging the rollercoaster at Jabberwock Park in order to perform a random death (which ends up being Akane) so that she can get off the island and find out the state of Novoselic.Sonia: I never wanted any of this. I had a dream once, you know? When this was all over, we would all be friends. We would leave this place and go on a road trip together. We'd take pictures. Go shopping. Play games. And we'd live on. A perfect day. But no. You clearly had no such desires! None of you do! Staying here forever, rotting away on this island? That's not peace, that's surrender! If that's your idea of valuing life, then I want no part of it!
- Loony Friends Improve Your Personality: Although Mahiru is usually quite serious, she becomes somewhat mellower when she is with other people, and she begins to be less demanding and more welcoming of boys like Hajime.
- Love Epiphany: Mahiru has this regarding Hajime at the end of part 28 of Chapter 4 after enjoying the date they'd gone on during the previous parts of the chapter.
- Love Hurts:
- Mikan and Ibuki become a couple, then both die in the very same chapter.
- Sonia ends up getting executed the same chapter she and Gundham end up becoming a couple.
- Mayfly–December Romance: A
Fridge Logic example. Mikan and Ibuki become an Official Couple, in Chapter 3, but merely after one day of being girlfriends, Ibuki and then later Mikan become infected with the Despair Disease, which eventually leads to Mikan concocting a murder plan that ends up getting them both killed. Mikan is killed by Ibuki, and then Ibuki is executed later. - Medium Awareness: When Peko brings out her Sparkling Justice facade, Hajime is freaked out by their speech being accompanied with text emotes.Hajime: Wait, how did you say that with your mouth!?
- Mind Virus: Chapter 3's motive is the Despair Disease; a virus created by Monokuma that infects several characters in order to provide a "motive" to kill. The symptoms cause the characters to act the opposite for how they usually act; but in this iteration, the characters who catch the disease are different. In this fic, Ibuki is the only one of the original three who still catches the disease. Instead of Akane, who becomes a huge crybaby, Nekomaru becomes a huge coward, and instead of Nagito telling obvious lies, Hajime is unable to speak anything but the blunt truth.
- Mythology Gag:
- When trying to figure out how the culprit broke into Fuyuhiko’s cottage, Ibuki suggests that since Gundham’s the Ultimate Breeder, he might have animal abilities, and be able to climb his cottage, but Gundham dismisses the claim for he lacks those abilities, however he claims that he could’ve thrown his Four Dark Devas into the skylight. Mahiru dismisses this theory, as she snarks how she won’t believe that Fuyuhiko fought an army of hamsters. Just like Mechomaru did in Chapter 4 of the original.
- When Ibuki is pinned as Mikan’s killer, she becomes silent for a while, before laughing off the claims and encourages Hiyoko to press her claim, just like Kaede did to Shuichi in V3.
- Noodle Incident:
- When Mahiru passes out in the beach house, the others catch Fuyuhiko and Peko in the act of murder. The group struggles to restrain Peko, requiring several of them to hold her down. In the midst of the struggle, Kazuichi accidentally brushes against Peko's chest.
- When Mahiru theorizes that Kazuichi's lock mechanism broke internally. Ibuki asks to see a photo of the broken lock, and compares it to her electric guitar, when she blew it up one time.Mikan: Wait, I-Ibuki... how did you d-detonate your electric guitar?
- Not His Sled: In Chapter 4, Monokuma tries to trick the remaining survivors into getting trapped in the Funhouse until a murder is committed like in canon, however Mahiru becomes suspicious of the fact that Monokuma is asking them to ride a slow train inside a dark location for the supposed promise of ship parts and the truth behind their missing memories and refuses to go on. The rest of the students gradually come to agree with her and refuse to enter the Funhouse as well, leading to the compromise that only one of them enters the Funhouse to try to get the reward, which Nagito ends up volunteering for, leading to him being the only one trapped in the Funhouse throughout Chapter 4's Daily Life.
- Once Done, Never Forgotten: Even though they are technically the victims of Case 2, Hiyoko does not forgive Peko, nor Fuyuhiko, for what they tried to do to Mahiru. She even tells Peko that she should kill herself to atone. Though she never outright forgives Peko, Hiyoko does eventually concede that she Was Too Hard On Her and tries to make peace through offering of some gummies.
- Official Couple:
- Even with the circumstances around them, Mikan and Ibuki start dating in Chapter 3.
- Sonia and Gundham have a Relationship Upgrade in Chapter 4, just like in canon.
- Point of Divergence: The timeline changes considerably because of one insignificant change. In this case, it's the protag swap.
- The Power of Love: The main theme of the story as a whole. Though it may sometimes seem delicate or fleeting, Re:Captured conveys that love is a force of remarkable strength and endurance. It can withstand trials, grow through challenges, and leave lasting imprints on ones hearts. Every person, regardless of circumstance, deserves to feel this profound connection, to give and receive love that affirms their worth and enriches their life, and that its power is timeless, quietly shaping people in ways that endure far beyond the fleeting moments in which they first feel it.
- Promoted to Love Interest: In this fic, Ibuki gains romantic feelings for Mikan.
- Put on a Bus: For the majority of Chapter 3, Monomi hardly appears in this chapter. Aside from a few mentions, and a letter she sent to protagonists, her only involvement was looking after Mahiru in the hopsital, excusing herself from the class trial.
- The Quarterback: Just like in the original game, Imposter!Byakuya quickly establishes himself as the leader of the group after Monokuma's announcement of the Killing Game. However, after his death, Hajime and the others decide to promote Mahiru as the new leader in his place, due to the bravery and initiative she showed during the Class Trial. Mahiru accepts the position after some reluctance, but the role is not easy on her.
- “The Reason You Suck” Speech:
- Mahiru finally puts a stand to Hiyoko’s bullying when she lashes out on Peko for trying to make amends, as Mahiru calls out Hiyoko’s selfish attitude.Mahiru: SHUT UP, HIYOKO!!!
Hiyoko: B...Big Sis?
Mahiru: You don't get to say all that! You don't have the right to open your mouth and hurl this abuse at her! Peko might have screwed up royally, but she's being genuine with us! She's trying her best to turn her life around and change for the better! Which is MORE than I can say for someone like YOU!
Hiyoko: Wh-What!?
Mahiru: Since DAY! ONE! You have insulted and belittled nearly EVERYONE here, and that hasn't changed at all today! You push people around, you mock, humiliate, and verbally ASSAULT others without a second thought! Peko may have a body count, but she did it because it was her JOB! She felt like she didn't have a choice! But YOU!? You CHOOSE to hurt people, and you seem to ENJOY other people's suffering! And you rarely, if EVER, show remorse! Even when people try to be nice to you, you double down on your cruelty! And that's not even covering the absolutely ABHORRENT way you've treated Mikan this whole time! You cannot justify putting her through that much torment!
Hiyoko: M-Mahiru! Wh-What are you doing!? Y-Y-You're supposed to be on MY side!
Mahiru: ...Is that really all the good I am to you?
Hiyoko: H-Huh!?
Mahiru: I really thought you were my friend...! It's because I thought we were friends that I stopped myself from calling you out this whole time! Because you were nice to me, and because I thought you were a good person despite yourself! But now I see... that's never what I was to you.
Hiyoko:…
Mahiru: You accuse others of being weak or pathetic, but YOU'RE the one who's dependent on me! You can't even get DRESSED without me! And worst of all, when things get too difficult for you, you act like the victim! You cry and play innocent, hoping someone will take your side! Just like now!
Hiyoko: …
Mahiru: But now you've taken it too far...and it stops! NOW!
[For a long, terrible moment, Hiyoko stood frozen, her entire body trembling. Then, suddenly... Tears welled in her eyes. Her lip quivered...And then a wail erupted from her throat. She turned on her heel and bolted out of the restaurant, screaming. The sound of her footsteps faded into the distance.] - Gundham tears apart Nagito's philosophy in the aftermath of the fourth trial while Nagito is criticizing him for covering up for Sonia and nearly getting everyone killed:Nagito: That's touching, in a pitiful sort of way. But it's also utterly pathetic. You speak of love as though it were a noble thing, but what you did was not love. It was cowardice. Letting the killer go unchecked just because of your feelings? For a fantasy, you were willing to put us all in danger. That's delusional, not romantic.
Mahiru: That is SO RICH coming from YOU, you smug prick. I distinctly remember you saying love was the reason you tricked Teruteru and got both him and Byakuya killed!
Nagito: [ignoring Mahiru] You accuse me of not understanding emotions, but at least I've never let personal attachments get in the way of the truth. At least I've never-
Gundham: You dare speak of truth? You? Don't make me laugh, cur... You act as if understand love. As if your allegiance to 'hope' grants you insight into the human heart. But tell me, Nagito Komaeda...when have YOU ever been loved? When has anyone ever looked at you and offered you their heart?
[Nagito freezes up]
Gundham: You call me a fool, but you...YOU...are the blind one. You don't see people. You see POTENTIAL. You don't love the Ultimates; you worship the CONCEPT of them. You chase some abstract idea of hope while ignoring the real, flawed souls standing before you...You think love is a weakness...because you've NEVER felt it.
- Mahiru finally puts a stand to Hiyoko’s bullying when she lashes out on Peko for trying to make amends, as Mahiru calls out Hiyoko’s selfish attitude.
- Recurring Element: Ironically, Mikan's plan in Chapter 3 of the fic mirrors Nagito's plan in Chapter 5 of the original game. Like Nagito, Mikan's ultimate goal was the complete annihilation of everyone else in the killing game, except for Ibuki, just as Nagito's was the same, except for Chiaki. However, Nagito's motive in the original game was to destroy the Remnants of Despair, so that he would be a symbol of hope. Mikan's motives are the reverse; wanting to murder everyone in an act of madness that would appeal to her "beloved," while making the personal decision to keep Ibuki alive due to her affection for her. Id est, Nagito was motivated by Hope, while Mikan was motivated by Despair.
- Refuge in Audacity: Despite Mikan giving her the opportunity to escape the island with her life, Ibuki decides not to take the opportunity knowing it means everyone else will die. Even though she has no intention of surviving, she still lets the trial play out as normal, gently nudging Hiyoko in the right direction throughout, as she knows that if she were to confess to the crime immediately, no one would believe her.
- Romance Arc: Mahiru's relationship with Hajime steadily progresses throughout the story, and gradually becomes more intimate.
- Seinfeldian Conversation: While discussing the case of Fuyuhiko's murder, Mahiru figures out that the culprit bashed his head on the frame of his bed. Sonia questions how the killer slammed him on the bed without damaging the bed frame, Monokuma assures them that he puts great care with crafting the beds and explains he spent a fortune to get it from IKEA. Everyone would then discuss about there being IKEAs in Japan, and question if they can take a trip to IKEA, until Hajime steers them back to the topic.Hajime: WHAT IS THIS CONVERSATION!? Can we please focus on the MURDER!? THE MURDER!
- Ship Tease: With the story revolving around the idea of the power of love, it's only natural that there's a ton of it here; especially compared to the first installment:
- Mahiru and Hajime are the most prominent example of this, being the Official Couple of the story. Their relationship is the most developed, starting out as petty and spiteful due to their contrasting personalities, gradually devolving into Belligerent Sexual Tension. After having a few Class Trials under their belt, they care for each, trust eachother, share meaningful moments with each other, and by the middle of Chapter 4, Mahiru fully falls for Hajime. They later have The Big Damn Kiss in Chapter 5.
- Ibuki and Mikan become a couple in Chapter 3, even though the latter initially finds it difficult to accept the former's affection. Ibuki’s boundless energy and positivity help Mikan feel more confident and loved, pulling her out of her insecurities. In turn, Mikan’s gentle care and empathy ground Ibuki’s wild spirit. Unfortunately, their relationship ends rather tragically, when Mikan essentially mind-controls Ibuki into killing her so that she could see her original "beloved", and Ibuki is executed from the crime. However, since Mikan seems to have had the added motivation of making Ibuki the killer so she could leave Jabberwock Island if she won the Class Trial, it's easy to assume she still loved Ibuki even under the effects of the disease. However, while Ibuki never stops loving Mikan despite what she did, she does not accept the chance to escape Jabberwock Island if it means the rest of her friends die, leading her to sacrifice her life, declaring her love for Mikan as her final words.
- Gundham and Sonia have a lot of moments of sexual tension in the story, this time without Kazuichi to interrupt as he dies in Chapter 2. They genuinely understand and appreciate each other’s unique quirks, with Sonia showing sincere interest in Gundham’s eccentricities and Gundham responding with rare moments of vulnerability and affection toward her. Unfortunately, much like Mikan and Ibuki, their relationship ends rather tragically. Despite sharing mutual feelings towards each other, Sonia ultimately chooses her sworn duty to the Novoselic Kingdom over her feelings for Gundham, killing Akane in an attempt to escape the island. Gundham disagrees with her actions but respects her decisions, sharing one final kiss before her execution. Even after her death, their love endures, shown when Gundham abandons his usual facade and becomes furious at Nagito for mocking Sonia’s motives.
- Shout-Out:
- When Monokuma tells Mahiru, Hiyoko, and Kazuichi that he stretched his body to reach the breaker to active it, he offers them to see "Monokuma: Plastic Man Version".
- In the first trial, when Chiaki suggests that Impostor!Byakuya wasn't killed under the table, Ibuki snaps to her "Frankly my dear, that makes no god damn demon sense!"
- In the beginning of Chapter 2, while eating breakfast, Nekomaru and Kazuichi are acting rather shady, which Chiaki comments "That’s sus…"
- While Chiaki and Kazuichi were investigating the beach house, Chiaki suspects of Kazuichi peeking on Sonia while she's changing in the beach house. That's before Monomi jumps in explaining that it's prohibited to undress in the beach house. The two would then rickroll themselves:Kazuichi: I already told you, I wasn't going to peek! Fine, whatever though! I'll just come back here after changing! I'm never gonna give her up!
Chiaki: You might let her down though... wait, did we just-? - In the second trial, when the students decide to discuss more to prove Nekomaru and Nagito’s innocence, Ibuki quotes from the famous Ace Attorney: "We need to turn our thinking around."
- When Peko brings out her Sparkling Justice facade, Hiyoko is freaked out by them, asking "What the heck is this creepy-ass, Jojo's Wacky Journey bullshit!?".
- When Kazuichi is figured out to be Fuyuhiko's killer, their dialogue at their Rage Breaking Point resembles that of Eva Tsunaka's in Chapter 1 of Project: Eden's Garden.
- Chapter 3, when Mahiru arrives to the firework festival, Ibuki assures Hajime that Mahiru’s hips makes up for her small breast by claiming that her "hips don’t lie".
- The morning after the fireworks show, Mahiru wakes up to Ibuki banging on her door while singing "We Will Rock You".
- When Nagito mocks the third motive, Monokuma calls him "Edmond Dantés".
- In the third trial, when describing the crime scene, Ibuki comments that the room was more bloodier than the Red Wedding… but in a hospital.
- Shrinking Violet: A male example; invoked by Monokuma, when Monokuma brings out the Despair Disease, Nekomaru gets the Quiet Disease, turning from a mighty powerhouse, into a timid and insecure weakling.Monokuma: Well, Nekomaru's normally so boisterous and loud. He basically yells everything he says. I guess the virus didn't really like that, so he's contracted the 'Quiet Disease!' Now look at him! BOO!
[Nekomaru let out a startled yelp, his massive form suddenly scurrying to the other side of the room. With surprising speed, he dove under a table, but his large frame caused the furniture to lurch awkwardly, nearly sending its contents tumbling to the floor. His entire body trembled as he peered out with wide, fearful eyes.] - Spanner in the Works: Hajime manages to thwart Peko and Fuyuhiko's canon murder attempt on Mahiru when he walks on them attempting to do the deed, calling out for help and getting the rest of the class to the beach house, where Akane and Nekomaru manage to subdue Fuyuhiko and Peko.
- Spared by the Adaptation:
- Mahiru survives past Chapter 2 when she was murdered in Danganronpa 2, due to being the protagonist.
- Peko survives past Chapter 2 when she was executed for murder in Danganronpa 2, as her murder attempt failed.
- Hiyoko survives past Chapter 3, when she was murdered by Mikan in the original.
- Downplayed. Ibuki switches roles with Mikan, becoming the Chapter 3 culprit.
- Nekomaru and Gundham both survive past Chapter 4 here, whereas they were that chapter's respective victim and culprit in the original.
- Stylistic Self-Parody:
- A few times the story narrates how Gundham doesn’t have any eyebrows. For example, in a free time event, when Sonia is feeling a bit down, the story narrates how Gundham cocks an eyebrow without having any.
- In the third trial, when Hiyoko takes on Mahiru’s role in leading the trial, you can notice that her hair suddenly gains an ahoge. No one else tells her about it, until the end of the chapter, and Hiyoko becomes embarrassed for looking messy during the trial. She eventually fixes the hair back into place, coincidentally when her brief time as protagonist comes to a close.
- When Monokuma reveals that he trapped Monomi in the funhouse, he claims that Monomi is so dumb, she doesn’t know how to write. Hiyoko could understand how she’d had difficulty drawing as she points out her mitten hands.
- Suggestive Collision: When Hajime becomes afflicted with the Despair Disease in Chapter 3 and starts making suggestive passes at Mahiru in the restaurant, unable to keep his thoughts to himself thanks to his affliction, Mahiru gets aggressive, leading to her tripping and falling on top of him like this, and Hajime...gets a Raging Stiffie, embarrassing and mortifying the photographer. To make matters worse, Nagito of all people enters the restaurant, sees it, gets the wrong idea, and tries to leave, saying he'll come back later. Mahiru practically pleads for him to come back and help her.
- Sweet Tooth: Hiyoko is still as gummy-gummed as she always has been.
- This Looks Like a Job for Aquaman: Mahiru proves to be unexpectedly versatile in Class Trials and investigations, using her Photography skills to take photos of key evidence.
- Varying Competency Alibi:
- When Akane gets suspected as Fuyuhiko’s killer, Ibuki is uncertain that someone as dumb as them can conduct such a crazy murder plan.Akane: Exactly! W-Wait a sec...!?
- Played deviously in the third chapter. After the students realize that Mikan was the one who orchestrated her own Murder-Suicide, Nagito is furious of how they deceived them, not only manipulating this murder, but also weaponizing the class trial itself. By presenting themself as a frail, and timid weakling, and by framing her crime on Hiyoko, a bratty jerk who insults everyone around her, people would less likely believe that she committed her own murder, so she can have everyone die with her.Nagito: You all made your assumptions based on who you THOUGHT was more likely to kill, a bratty, bad-tempered girl with a sharp tongue versus a meek, fragile nurse who couldn't even look someone in the eye without trembling.
Akane: Well, yeah! Obviously! But with Mikan, it's different! A chick like Mikan couldn't kill a fly! In fact, the fly'd probably kill HER first!
Nagito: That, was exactly what Mikan was counting on.
- When Akane gets suspected as Fuyuhiko’s killer, Ibuki is uncertain that someone as dumb as them can conduct such a crazy murder plan.
- Vicious Cycle: No matter how many times they try to stop it, more and more people in the killing game just keep dying.
- Villainous Breakdown: Nagito has one right before the fourth trial when Mahiru stops his mocking of Hajime over Hajime not having a talent by revealing that in spite of all that, she still ended up falling for Hajime anyway, leading to Nagito spluttering and accusing her of betraying hope and demeaning her potential by having romantic feelings for a Reserve Course student.
- Wake-Up Call:
- Following Hajime helping her through the Chapter 2 investigation, Mahiru begins to come around to being more dependent on the boys and stops holding basic actions against them. This really comes to a head when Kazuichi blames Mahiru for his trust issues and slowly regressing mental state, and though he doesn't truly mean what he says, she realizes that she Was Too Hard on Him.
- Peko, as is the case with canon, sees herself as nothing more than a tool or weapon for Fuyuhiko to wield as he saw fit. However, this time around, she survives while Fuyuhiko dies, leaving her to question the point of her existence, and trying to find a new life for herself as a person, not property.
- The events of Chapter 3 and the near endless spew of horror she is subjected to hits Hiyoko hard, and though it's difficult, she resolves to be a better, more agreeable, and more cooperative person so that she and everyone she cares about can survive the Killing Game together.
- Whole-Plot Reference: Case 3 of this fic is interestingly very similar to Case 4 of Danganronpa Another, particularly with how Mikan's plan mirrors Haruhiko Kobashikawa. Both Mikan and Haruhiko manipulate their girlfriends, Ibuki Mioda and Satsuki Iranami respectively, into killing them (Mikan takes advantage of Ibuki's gullible state thanks to the Despair Disease, while Haru tricks Satsuki into a duel with guns to see who ends up the victim, while rigging his own gun to make sure it fires on himself). They then attempt to conceal said partner's actions by staging a Locked Room Mystery, aiming to protect her while sacrificing the others. The difference, however, is that Mikan's actions, and what she attempts to achieve, are far more sinister and maniacal.
- Who's on First?: Briefly occurs when Ibuki realizes that Sonia can translate Gundham’s hammy speech while getting into this trope with Sonia’s last name.Ibuki: You make it sound as if we know what he's talking about!
Sonia: What Gundham means to say is that the real reason you showed up is because you suspect that one of us had something to do with the Monobeast's disappearance, and you came to confront us about it.
Ibuki: Oh, we CAN translate it! Never mind!
Sonia: Yes?
Ibuki: No, no, not-...Oh! Haha! Nevermind! - Xanatos Gambit: When she becomes the culprit of Chapter 3 after Mikan controls her in a brainwashed state, Ibuki chooses to follow Mikan's plan with two possible outcomes: either she survives at the cost of the others, fulfilling Mikan's desire to free her from the Killing Game, or she is exposed, allowing the others to live while she joins Mikan in the afterlife. She chooses the latter.
- "You Mean Me?" Confirmation: In the second trial, when Akane is accused as the murderer of the case, Gundham asks her about the evidence they provided while referring her as "large one", much to Akane's confusion, lamenting if she's too big.Akane: Wait...am I 'large one'? I can't really tell...I'm not that big, am I?
Kazuichi: You seem pretty casual for someone who's under suspicion of murder! - You Remind Me of X: When Nagito offers his services to Monokuma following the fourth trial, he mentions that he needs to ensure that true hope shines brightly, which Monokuma says reminds him of someone he used to know and hate, implied to be Makoto. Nagito then states that he no longer wants to merely be a "stepping stone" for hope, rather he wants to eliminate Despair completely from Jabberwock Island and become akin to Ultimate Hope, causing Monokuma to then state that Nagito now reminds him of someone else he hates, implied to be Chihiro.
- You Wanna Get Sued?: Subverted. Like the original, when Monokuma presents Twilight Syndrome Murder Case, Hiyoko is uninterested, as she prefers the video games where she plays as a puzzle-solving professor, or where she collects creatures to make cool tricks with. But before she could describe any further, Monokuma shuts her up, to avoid lawsuit. Nekomaru chimes in that since they’re in a fanfic of the original game, they don’t really have to worry about copyright. Mahiru is confused about the conversation.
