Code Lyoko: EG is a fanfic written by Sapphire Valley that is Exactly What It Says on the Tin: an attempt to adapt the plot of Code Lyoko to My Little Pony: Equestria Girls. It was first released on July 13, 2015, and completed on October 19, 2016.

The action takes place in Canterlot, California, home of Canterlot High Boarding School. Applejack, a recent transfer to the school, quickly meets and bonds with her fellow students: athletic Rainbow Dash, video game loving Pinkie Pie, the aloof Rarity, and Applejack's roommate Twilight Sparkle, a certified genius with a secret... namely, her friendship with Fluttershy, supposedly an A.I. from the virtual world of Lyoko, which is housed in a supercomputer in the basement of a nearby abandoned factory. Twilight has made it her goal to free Fluttershy from the supercomputer, materializing her into the real world; upon discovering this, Applejack agrees to help and support them.

However, Twilight's plans are opposed by the evil A.I. XANA, which has its own goals involving world conquest through various manifestations in the real world, forcing the others to enter Lyoko in order to shut down the towers that XANA uses to power its attacks. As the team continues to thwart its goals and delves deeper into the history of Lyoko in their attempts to solve its mysteries, including the identities of its creators, XANA becomes even more dangerous and develops a personal grudge against Twilight.

The series is divided into five arcs:

  • Fluttershy arc - chapters 1-9.
  • Eos arc - chapters 10-16.
  • Selene arc - chapters 17-22.
  • Twilight arc - chapters 23-27.
  • Dazzling arc - chapters 28-35.

Code Lyoko: EG provides examples of:

  • Abusive Parents: Rainbow Dash's emotionally abusive dad, who's considered her a failure since birth because of her gender.
    • Rarity's father, who reacts... poorly to her falling in love with another girl isn't much better. He finally gets better in the finale.
    • In a milder case, Twilight's parents are more concerned about her grades than they are about her happiness.
  • Adaptational Heroism: Trixie may be in the role of Sissi, but she's generally nicer and more helpful to Twilight/Jérémie than the canon Sissi — or the canon Trixie for that matter. She plays a key role in helping the Lyoko Warriors defeat XANA.
    • On the pony side of things, Chrysalis and Sombra both fill part of the role of Franz Hopper.
    • Maud may technically be filling the role of older sister to the Odd Expy but she's much kinder than Odd's sisters are in canon.
    • In the fifth arc The Dazzlings so far seem like protagonists. They also seem to be much nicer over all, with Adagio shown to be very approachable and kind. Aria and Sonata are also shown to be much closer to one another. Ultimately subverted in their case though.
    • Zigzagged with Sunset Shimmer, who is a Jerk with a Heart of Gold who is best described as having the confidence of her post-reformation self and the kindness of her pre-reformation self.
  • Adaptational Villainy: XANA was definitely villainous in the original series, but its lack of personality left it feeling like a Generic Doomsday Villain at times. Here, Sapphire Valley gives XANA an actual character, with traces of The Sociopath present throughout.
  • A.I. Is a Crapshoot: The Architects of Lyoko created XANA, and it turned on them.
  • Alas, Poor Villain: Aria and Sonata might have been Evil All Along, but they're so likable and nice it's easy to feel sorry for them when they die, Sonata especially. There's also Adagio, but considering she got the Redemption Rejection treatment, she was far less sympathetic. Still, Twilight does seem to feel a little sorry for her.
  • Arch-Nemesis: Though XANA is really this toward all the Lyoko Warriors, its focus is solely on causing Twilight as much pain as possible. Its reason wanting her to suffer? It just hates Twilight that much.
XANA: [text on Twilight's phone] Simple. I hate you, Twilight. I want the pleasure of watching the life sucked out of you personally. No one is allowed to kill you but me, Twilight Sparkle.
  • Badass Teacher: Don't mess with Principal Celestia's students. Just don't. Vice-Principal Luna also qualifies.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: Happens more frequently than in Code Lyoko, due in part to Sapphire Valley cutting out more Filler than Dragonball Kai.
  • Beauty Is Never Tarnished: Save for being mostly naked and in shackles, Celestia is in pretty good condition for someone who was a prisoner and tortured for months non-stop. Partially subverted though, as Rainbow Dash quickly remarks at how that's almost more disturbing. Confirmed when she wakes up. With how badly she panics, it's quite clear that she's been through constant hell.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Fluttershy, of course.
Fluttershy: First you kill my father, then you take away ten years of my life, and now you think you can take Twilight?! I swear to God, XANA, when I get my hands on you, I'm going to rip you APART!
  • Broken Bird: Rarity. During her freshman year, she fell in love with a boy named Blueblood, who tutored her back when she was still learning English. After giving him her virginity, he broke up with her at a school dance, claiming it was because she was a foreigner who could barely speak English. This painted her view on others, and lead her to isolate herself from everyone. XANA uses this memory to control her when she's put under its control.
  • But Now I Must Go: Sunset decides to leave Canterlot High following XANA's defeat, partly because she's still technically a fugitive due to her time with the Equalists and partly because she knows Twilight will always be torn between her and Fluttershy if she stays. She does, however, promise to return for Twilight and Fluttershy's and Rarity and Applejack's respective weddings.
  • Casual Kink: Fluttershy has a tendency to hold Twilight in dominating positions when kissing her.
  • Code Name: The Architects of Lyoko used the names of Greek deities for themselves: Eos (Titaness of the dawn), Selene (Titaness of the moon), Thanatos (primordial of death), Proteus (an ancient sea deity) and Chaos (primordial of the void, from whom all existence sprang).
  • Cool Big Sis:
    • Per canon, Maud is this for Pinkie, and Shining Armor, a Lieutenant for the Canterlot Police's Special Victims Unit, is a Cool Big Bro for Twilight. The two even come to Parent-Teacher Conference day in place of their parents.
    • This is how Sweetie Belle views Rarity.
  • Covert Pervert: XANA. Yes, really. He possesses attractive woman, dresses them up in skimpy outfits, and makes them act sexier then they normally would. When you think about it, creating the Dazzlings as part of his final scheme isn't much of a surprise.
  • The Cracker: The Equalizers, a group of hackers who sought to destroy the upper class and distribute money into the accounts of the lower class.
  • Cyberspace: Lyoko itself, being a virtual world with four (later revealed to be five) sectors. It's later revealed that each was created by one of the five Architects: Eos - Sector 5; Selene - Ice Sector; Chaos - Forest Sector; Proteus - Desert Sector; and Thanatos - Mountain Sector.
  • Decomposite Character:
    • Ulrich's character is divided between Rainbow Dash ("Well Done, Son!" Guy who's best friends with the Odd Expy) and Applejack (romantic interest of the Yumi Expy).
    • Ulrich's role is further decomposited when Sunset/William shows up, with Fluttershy playing Ulrich's role in the love triangle and Twilight as the Yumi.
    • Franz Hopper's role is divided up into the Lyoko Architects.
    • While Yumi, Ulrich and Odd's roles in the story are taken up by Rarity, Rainbow Dash, Applejack and Pinkie, their weapons and abilities go to Adagio, Aria and Sonata, respectively.
  • Disappeared Dad: Fluttershy's father Sombra, who was believed to have been killed by XANA via being lured into Lyoko and knocked into the Digital Sea. But when a mysterious armored figure begins to appear in Lyoko later on, Fluttershy correctly suspects he may not be as dead as they thought.
  • Dying Declaration of Hate: XANA, and hoo boy does he give one, directed solely at Twilight, who has a moment of wanting to give XANA an honorable end. His response? Telling Twilight just how much he hates her. Needless to say, she doesn't hesitate to off him. To add insult to injury, he laughs at Twilight while he's being deleted.
XANA: Is this the part where I'm supposed to repent in my last moments? Maybe have an epiphany that causes me to see the error of my ways? Let me tell you something, Twilight Sparkle. All the hate I have for every living being on this planet doesn't even amount to half of the hate I have for you this very moment. The only thing that would give me pleasure would be to see you writhing in pain and agony. If you spare me Twilight Sparkle, then I'll gather my strength, and then I'll return. When I do, I'll hunt you down, and slowly kill everyone that you love. Your friends, your family, everyone, and I'll force you to sit there and watch. So go ahead Twilight Sparkle. You want to be the bigger person, right? You want to prove that "love" and "compassion" will prevail in the end. That you're nothing like me. Let's see it.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Sunset Shimmer appears briefly in Chapter 10 and helps Rainbow save Pinkie from a XANA-possessed Maud in Chapter 12 before officially being introduced in Chapter 14.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: The Dazzlings seem to love each other. Justified as they're the same person.
  • Expy: The Equestria Girls characters for the Code Lyoko characters minus XANA:
    • Twilight Sparkle is Jeremie.
    • Fluttershy Sandora is Aelita.
    • Rainbow Dash Rivera and Applejack Ambrosia take on a Decomposite Character of Ulrich.
    • Pinkie Pie is Odd.
    • Rarity Dostoevskaia is Yumi.
    • Vice-Principal Luna is Jim.
    • Trixie, Snips, and Snails are Sissi, Herve, and Nicholas.
    • Principal Celestia is Principal Delmas.
    • The Cutie Mark Crusaders are Millie and Tamiya.
      • Sweetie Belle also plays Hiroki, as she's Rarity's younger sibling.
    • Sunset Shimmer is William.
    • Damien Tirek is Professor Tyron from Code Lyoko: Evolution.
    • Tartarus is Project Carthage.
  • Face–Heel Turn: Once the Scyphozoa finishes downloading its program into Rarity, she becomes brainwashed into working for XANA in an adaption of the Nightmare Rarity arc from the comics.
    • XANA did the same thing to Luna years earlier in this world's version of the "Nightmare Moon" incident, and that program is re-activated in her when she re-enters Lyoko for the first time.
    • Later, Twilight is forcibly turned into an avatar for XANA.
    • All three are ultimately restored to their old selves.
  • Fragile Speedster: Rainbow Dash and Pinkie Pie's Lyoko forms count for this. They don't have high attack or high defense (Pinkie Pie's is better than Dash's) but they make up for that in speed. Dash especially, having actual super speed on Lyoko.
  • Genre Savvy: Pinkie Pie treats Lyoko like a giant computer game, and frequently lampshades the video game stereotypes the Warriors encounter.
  • Glass Cannon: Twilight essentially becomes this in Lyoko. Her energy beams give her the strongest attack overall, but her defense is the lowest on Lyoko, even compared to Fluttershy.
  • A God Am I: XANA refers to itself as such upon its first face-to-face encounter with the Warriors in Chapter 6. It's eventually revealed that after becoming self-aware and realizing it was effectively a god in Lyoko, it decided it wanted to become a god in the real world too.
  • Good All Along: Starlight Glimmer was originally the leader of the Equalizers, but was later captured by Tartarus and forced to join them, agreeing only to protect the other members of her old group. She ultimately plays a key role in freeing Twilight and Celestia from them, and weakens XANA in the process.
  • Government Conspiracy: Tartarus was a secret government project to create a computer that would let people travel anywhere through cyberspace, and later through the real world as well.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Starlight Glimmer dies saving Twilight in chapter 27.
    • Sombra, already having come close to death, dies for real while saving Fluttershy just prior to the final battle.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: Rainbow Dash and Pinkie Pie. Though surprisingly both of them are in fact straight, you sometimes wouldn't be able to tell with how affectionate they are with each other.
  • Hidden Depths: Who would have guessed Rainbow Dash was good at belly-dancing?
    • Pinkie Pie comes off as a gamer equivalent of how she is in canon, but it's revealed early on that this is how she is now. Deep down Pinkie Pie isn't as happy as she appears.
  • Incest Subtext: Celestia and Luna, both of them grown women in their thirties at least mind you, happily live together in the same house, are somewhat touchy feely with each other, and for the majority of the story are both still single? What are we supposed to think? Their past even hints that they used to do just about everything together.
    • Made even worse when the story of the Renaissance Fair is mentioned. Apparently, when Celestia got roped into a tournament for her hand in marriage, Luna intervened to save her... by entering the tournament herself. When she won and revealed herself, Celestia dramatically confessed her absolute devotion to Luna. Maybe she was just being dramatic, but no one really goes into more detail than that, so who knows?
  • Killed Off for Real: Sunburst, Starlight Glimmer's boyfriend and Sunset's older brother, died before the series started. And at the end of the fourth arc, Tirek is outright deleted by Pinkie Pie, who destroys him after his connection to the real world is lost.
  • Kiss Me, I'm Virtual: Knowing that Fluttershy is an AI in Lyoko doesn't stop Twilight from falling head over heels in love with her. Like the canon show this is ultimately subverted when we learn that Fluttershy is actually human.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: In order to free Luna from XANA's influence in this world's version of the "Nightmare Moon" incident, Celestia was forced to remove Luna's avatar from the supercomputer, purging her of XANA's corruption at the cost of removing all of Luna's memories of Lyoko.
  • Make Me Wanna Shout: Adagio has this as a special ability when in Lyoko.
  • Meaningful Echo: Chapter 9 has XANA attempting to kill Twilight using a materialized Krab. Before he attempts it, he looms over Twilight and says "Goodbye, my loathsome adversary" before attempting to kill her. He fails. During the final fight, Twilight stands over his "body" and says the exact same line before attempting to kill him. She succeeds.
  • More Than Mind Control: Apparently when XANA took Rarity, he didn't control her per say. More so he slightly altered her mind so she'd see things his way. Believe it or not, she was in complete control of herself, which makes some of what she does really terrifying and upsetting. This is a major source of guilt for her, and is the reason for her 10-Minute Retirement after being rescued.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • Chapter 5 has the gang bring up a past incident in which XANA attacked the school with a giant teddy bear. The very first episode of Code Lyoko, "Teddygodzilla", featured XANA using that exact same scheme.
    • Chapter 13 has XANA possessing a scientist that bears a strong resemblance to Franz Hopper from the original series.
    • Sunset's Lyoko avatar is based upon her "Sunset Satan" form from the first Equestria Girls film.
  • Mighty Glacier: Rarity's Lyoko form in a nutshell. She has the second highest attack and the best defense, but her speed is noticeably lacking.
  • Naughty by Night: Out in public, Fluttershy seems more like her canon self, albeit prone to subtle snark every once in a while. When alone with Twilight though, she's flirtatious, passionate, and very upfront with how much she wants Twilight.
    • Twilight herself doesn't get a pass. For as nerdy as she appears most of the time, she's prone to initiate passionate make-out sessions with Fluttershy just as often.
  • Never Recycle Your Schemes: Sunset reveals discovering this weakness of XANA's while researching its past schemes to the rest of the Warriors near the end of Chapter 25:
Sunset: It doesn't matter how successful the attack was. XANA doesn't care about the process as much as he cares about the end result. I looked at Twilight's journal again, and I noticed a pattern. XANA has almost gotten you guys a number of times with his attacks, but no matter how successful parts are, he doesn't try it again. He scraps the whole thing and starts over. Think about it. XANA had a perfect plan keeping Fluttershy out of the towers when he possessed the bees. If he combined that with, let's say, that time in the gymnasium, he would have won easily, but he didn't. He never combines multiple attacks from past records, nor does he actually learn. He's just trying multiple things until he finds something that works.
  • Noodle Incident: Maud once helped Shining Armor with one of his cases. Details aren't given.
    • Also, per her role as Jim's expy, Luna has more than a few of these in her past. She'd rather not talk about them. Except for all those school talent shows she and Celestia entered when they were younger - she'd love to talk about them, but was too busy to do so when it came up. (This doubles as a Shout-Out to a similar scene in the episode "Final Round".)
    • So... what did happen in the swimming pool and gymnasium?
  • Not His Sled: Two of the biggest plot developments from the original series are twisted in completely new directions:
    • When the Protozoa makes its debut in Chapter 10, you think XANA will have it go after Fluttershy like it did with Aelita. Nope, it targets Rarity.
    • Once Sunset officially joins the group, you think XANA will make her a Sixth Ranger Traitor like it did with William. Nope, it captures Twilight instead, though it does briefly try to turn Sunset to its cause.
  • Official Couple: Twilight and Fluttershy.
    • Applejack and Rarity reach this, eventually. The epilogue has Applejack proposing, which Rarity happily accepts.
  • Open-Minded Parent: Rarity's mom ultimately proves to be this, approving of Rarity's relationship with Applejack and recognizing it as true love.
  • Race Lift: Rarity and her family (including Sweetie Belle, despite being born and raised in the States) are Russian.
  • Reality Ensues: Unlike the original, this story actually dives into what would happen to children forced to save the world against a sentient computer virus. Not only do they mess up half the time being, you know, TEENAGERS, but by the end of it, none of them are quite the same as they were in the beginning. Twilight probably gets it the worst, being almost completely broken in the end.
  • Redemption Rejection: Before destroying XANA for good, Twilight gives him one last chance at redemption. But XANA just throws it back in her face, saying that if Twilight spares him he'll do everything in his power to kill her and her friends. And, even when he gets deleted, his last words are saying how he and Twilight are Not So Different.
  • Related in the Adaptation: Sunset Shimmer is the younger sister of Sunburst.
  • Secret Identity: All of the Lyoko Warriors have to keep their activities with Lyoko a secret.
    • Later, the Architects of Lyoko: Eos, Selene, Thanatos, Proteus, and Chaos. They turn out to be Principal Celestia, Vice Principal Luna, Fluttershy's father Sombra, Chrysalis (who entered Witness Protection and became Cadance, the new school nurse), and Jonathan Discord, the school janitor.
  • She Who Fights Monsters: After being rescued from Tartarus, Twilight's desire to destroy XANA consumes her, to the point where she doesn't care how much damage she causes in the fight. She will kill XANA.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Suddenly Voiced: Unlike in canon, XANA is capable of speech. He speaks through texts, a copy of Twilight, and Adagio.
  • "Shut Up" Kiss: Fluttershy gives Twilight this in chapter 9 to stop her from breaking down. She then proceeds to flirt with Twilight. It's as hot as you think it is.
  • Sixth Ranger: Sunset fills this role, being the William expy.
  • 10-Minute Retirement: Rarity decides to take a brief leave of absence from the group in Chapter 18 after being freed of XANA's influence in the previous chapter. She's back before the end of the chapter.
  • They Do: Applejack and Rarity. Yeah, take THAT in! Not only do they avoid the on again off again trope that Ulrich and Yumi were trapped in, but in the very last episode, Applejack proposes to Rarity! Needless to say, she says yes.
  • Unresolved Sexual Tension: Naturally Applejack and Rarity for most of the story, being the Ulrich and Yumi expy. Unlike Ulrich and Yumi though, they eventually resolve it, becoming an Official Couple by the end of the fourth arc.
  • Villainous Breakdown: After losing control of Twilight in the end of the fourth arc, XANA experiences this, actually questioning its methods. This ends up leading to XANA becoming even more dangerous.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Applejack and Luna eventually develop into this relationship.
