Closer (Game of Thrones)

Go To

"Closer" is a one-shot Game of Thrones/A Song of Ice and Fire fanfic by ALCzysz17 where King Robert Baratheon has learned the truth about Jon Snow, leaving the Stark family scrambling to find a way to save Jon. Eventually a compromise is reached... by marrying him to his cousin Sansa.

Tropes that appear in this fanfic:

  • Age Lift: Jon is 19 years old while Sansa is turning 16 the day of their wedding.
  • All for Nothing: Part of the situation at the beginning, as all of Ned's attempts to hide Jon have been in vain, leaving the family vulnerable to what punishment King Robert has in store.
  • Altar Diplomacy: Jon will be tied to the Starks through his marriage to Sansa, and it's the only way he has a chance to live.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Jon Snow has always wanted to be a Stark. Now through his marriage to Sansa he will be one, under less than ideal circumstances.
  • Black Cloak: Jon wears an unadorned black cloak for the wedding; the feeling is that his heritage does not matter because he will be shedding the Targaryen name in exchange for becoming a Stark.
  • Cooldown Hug: The first thing the Stark siblings do after hearing Jon's parentage is to all go to his bedroom to hug him and assure him that things will be alright.
  • Family Relationship Switcheroo: The first scene is Ned revealing to his children that Jon Snow, who they thought as their half-brother, is really their cousin.
  • The Immodest Orgasm: Invoked by Sansa, who deliberately moans as loud as she can throughout the bedding ceremony to make the bannermen feel uncomfortable.
  • Incest-ant Admirer: Sansa wonders why she feels so good with Jon, and even if she harbored incestuous feelings for him even when she knew him as her brother.
  • Insatiable Newlyweds: The story ends with Jon and Sansa preparing to have sex again.
  • Jerkass: Queen Cersei Lannister. It's her idea for Jon and Sansa have to have their first time as a married couple in front of an audience and she seems amused at Sansa's pleas for mercy than anything else.
  • Kissing Cousins: Enforced. The premise of the story is that Jon and Sansa have to marry each other otherwise his life will be forfeit.
  • Mama Bear: Catelyn argues vehemently against Cersei's insistence on the public viewing.
  • Moment Killer: Jon and Sansa are brought out of the pleasurable feelings of their wedding night by a round of clapping from those watching them.
  • Noodle Incident: It isn't explained how King Robert learned the truth about Jon's parentage.
  • Once More, with Clarity: In-universe. Ned tells his children the story of Robert's Rebellion but this time with an added ending where Ned discovered the dying Lyanna with her infant son Jon.
  • Papa Wolf: Even though Ned is Jon's uncle instead of his father, he bargains hard for Jon's life and the match to Sansa was a last resort.
  • Parental Sexuality Squick: Inverted; Ned, with a sickened look on his face, makes a beeline for the chair that's furthest back from the bed where his daughter and nephew are to have sex for the first time.
  • Percussive Therapy: Jon takes out his feelings about the upcoming marriage by smashing training dummies; according to Robb, he's broken so many Ser Rodrik was having a fit.
  • Sex in a Shared Room: Queen Cersei suggests that Jon and Sansa's first time as a marriage couple should be in front of an audience to ensure that the marriage is consummated.
  • Shed the Family Name: As part of the proceedings for the wedding, Jon will no longer be a Targaryen but will take the name Stark from Sansa when they marry. This is symbolized by reversing the typical Westerosi custom of placing the bride under the groom's protection, with Sansa placing her cloak on Jon.
  • Sour Prude: Overlaps with Stern Nun. Sansa thinks that Septa Mordane would have a stroke if she knew that Sansa knew how to masturbate.
  • Textile Work Is Feminine: Catelyn personally creates Sansa's wedding gown.
"Her mother made her a beautiful wedding gown, light grey with intricate designs of flowers down the skirt of the dress, joined along a spidering vine that linked them together. The sleeves were made of the same light, sheer fabric that reached down to the same length of her skirt with a slit right midway down her forearm. Upon her bodice was all beaded with designs of a direwolf on the front, across her chest while Tully fishes were on the back."
