Children of Teyvat

Go To

"When we first showed up in this place, all I wanted to do was go home. But Biggest Sister Nahida said that we should just play the hand that was dealt to us, because it doesn't seem like there's a way for us to go home. Master Jean said that if there was anyone in danger or being hurt, that it was my responsibility as a Knight of Favonius to help them as best as I could. Even though I want to go home, I can't just ignore people being threatened by bad guys, whether they're Hilichurls, the Abyss Order, or these Grineer, Corpus, or Infested. Miss Lotus, speaking on behalf of myself and my sisters, we, the Cute Force of Teyvat, will accept your offer to serve as defenders of [the Origin System]."

Children of Teyvat is a fanfiction written by PilotSolaris and published on Archive of Our Own, which crosses over the worlds of Genshin Impact and Warframe.

When an accident in Natlan leads to Klee, Diona, Qiqi, Sayu, Nahida, Yaoyao, Sigewinne, Kachina, and Iansan falling into the Abyss and eventually exploring the Void, a dangerous meeting leads to the group - known as the "Cute Force of Teyvat" - entering the Origin System with the Power of the Void endemic to the Tenno, a "blessing" The Man in The Wall has left them. Their only hope for survival in this bizarre world unlike anything they've ever seen is to ally with the Tenno and take their own journey through Origin, from the grimy factories of Ceres to the winding, laborious depths of Albrecht Entrati's laboratories in the depths of Deimos, to the ancient past of 1999.

Due to the nature of this story, spoilers for Natlan's Archon Quest and all Warframe Quests up to 1999 are unmarked.

Tropes:

  • Adaptation Expansion:
    • Casual Interplanetary Travel via Solar Rail is expanded on here. Rather than simply being a means to rapidly cross the Solar System without needing a Reliquary Drive, Solar Rail travel instead takes anywhere from a few days to a few minutes depending on the "Void Motivator" in your ship's engines. A Tenno orbiter like Theth's is able to make the jump incredibly quickly, for example.
    • Tenno that aren't the Chosen Operator have their own ship Cephalons independent of Ordis. Theth's is named Keris, for example.
    • Tenno culture is generally expanded upon in bigger ways than what is implied in the game proper - among other things, the Tenno have turned their old Solar Rails into a proper Solar Rail network that spans much of the Origin System and is independent of the Grineer and Corpus' Rails. The Absolution Ceremony, which was just throwaway Flavor Text for the Uru Syandana, is also expanded upon massively, turning it into a New Year's celebration during the Orokin's reign and an initiation ceremony for new Tenno in the post-Orokin system, complete with oaths for initiates to swear and a feast afterward.
    • Tenno warrior traditions are a lot more Mildly Military than in canon; almost all of the named Tenno encountered by the kids have officers' ranks that are largely disregarded as they're there for flavor more than anything. For example, Theth is a Commander, and his friends and teammates Aris and Linea are Lieutenants.
  • Adorable Abomination: The Man in The Wall is still the same frightening, mercurial freak the Tenno deal with in Warframe proper, but the rule that it always appears as a Doppelgänger of whomever it's interacting with is constant regardless of whether it's interacting with a Warframe character or a Genshin Impact character - meaning that when it menaces characters like Klee, Nahida, or Sigewinne it takes the form of an adorable little girl, the only real tells of its true nature being either its blurred face or, when it's not blurring its face to screw with its targets, its telltale Voice of the Legion, Slasher Smile, and Black Eyes of Evil.
  • Arc Words: Indifference and its conjugates are just as important to this story as they are to the canon story of Warframe, as it's the most common adjective used to describe The Man in The Wall. When describing it, the phrase is always capitalized ("Indifferent" vs. "indifferent").
  • Badass Adorable: The Cute Force - Klee, Diona, Qiqi, Sayu, Nahida, Yaoyao, Sigewinne, Kachina, and Iansan - are all cute little girls who use the "short female" model in Genshin Impact, and even before they gained the Power of the Void they were perfectly capable of kicking the asses of hostile forces that harassed them thanks to their nature as Vision-bearing Allogenes, or, in Nahida's case, being one of the Seven Archons that rule Teyvat's nations. A fight on Ceres against a squad of Grineer perfectly illustrates this - while Yaoyao got a bullet through her leg at the start, the girls completely routed the enemy with only one usage of their Void powers in the form of Sigewinne killing the Heavy Gunner leading them with a Void Beam through her head.
  • Black Speech: The Voidtounge of The Man in The Wall is a guttral and deep-sounding language that cuts in at the end of chapter 1 before Sigewinne can take in the full nature of The Man in The Wall and obfuscating the nature of her meeting with it up until chapter 8. The fog that clouds Sigewinne's memories regarding that meeting is also revealed to in fact be a morass of Voidtounge words when Nahida moves in to dispel it, all of which turns into the Voidtounge word "XATA"note  when Nahida injects the idea of "Truth" into it as a dispelling measure. Voidtounge words are written in bold, ALL-CAPS, and occasionally italics to highlight their evil nature.
  • The Blank: The first time The Man in The Wall harasses the girls, it obscures its face so as to further screw with its targets - in this case, Klee and Sigewinne. It doesn't do this with Nahida, however, and when Nahida unblocks Sigewinne's memory of her meeting with it, its face is unobscured as well.
  • Casual Interplanetary Travel: The Origin System can be easily traversed within a few minutes to a few days with the Solar Rails and the Reliquary Drive. Both use the Void as a medium of transit, and while a ship doesn't need a Reliquary Drive to travel the Solar Rails, they do need one if they intend on doing non-Solar Rail jumps. The main benefit of the Solar Rails and the Reliquary Drive is that it bypasses the distances of space that would need to be traveled normally in order to get from one planet to another - which can become a massive problem because of orbital periods, especially if two planets aren't in conjunction with each other.
  • The Chosen One: The Chosen Operator of The Man in The Wall - in this case named "Janathon" with the nickname "Jana" - is a secondary character, meanwhile, Sigewinne has become one herself by taking a deal with the Indifference similar to the one Jana took in order to save her friends.
  • Cooldown Hug: Nahida helps Theth come down from his Rage Breaking Point regarding Narmer during his Exposition Dump, first by grabbing hold of his arm then giving him a tight hug and some comforting words. The act causes Theth to break down in tears and admit that there's a lot of trauma related to Ballas that he and his fellow Tenno haven't been able to properly process.
  • Deal with the Devil: Sigewinne made a deal with The Man in The Wall similar to the Chosen Operator, and it was through this deal that she and her friends gained their Tenno powers. The nature - and carrying out - of this deal was obscured to Sigewinne for unknown reasons until Nahida broke the spell The Man in The Wall cast to keep that memory from being easily accessed.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: The Flavor Text for Chapter 1 is a quote from Chlothar Alberich warning the nascent Abyss Order to never go too deep into the Abyss proper, as too far down you wind up in Warframe's Void, which he describes as playing host to "True Evil". It's implied that he encountered The Man in The Wall somehow while exploring its depths and it scared him so badly he decided that going there for most any reason was just not worth it.
  • Handshake of Doom: Sigewinne's deal with The Man in The Wall was sealed with a handshake similar to the Chosen Operator's; the major difference between said handshakes being that Sigewinne simply blacked out rather than experiencing an Eternalistic quantum collapse like the Chosen Operator.
  • Hyperspace Is a Scary Place: The Void, much like in canon, is the means by which Casual Interplanetary Travel is possible in the Origin System. Unfortunately, like in canon, it's also an Eldritch Location where strong enough emotions can cause it to react in unexpected ways and it's where the resident Eldritch Abomination, The Man in The Wall, hails from. It's also where the main characters start their journey outside of Teyvat, having gone down into it during an unplanned excursion into the Abyss.
  • Mildly Military: The Tenno are more like this here than in canon; while Tenno have ranks like Admiral, General, Major, Commander, and Lieutenant, they generally disregard those ranks as they're implicitly there for flavor more than anything. The only authority they really treat seriously is that of the Lotus.
  • Mr. Exposition: Justified with Theth; flavor text at the start of Chapter 9 from a Tenno Original Character notes that the Origin System is in such a state of disarray that Tenno that have been reawakened from stasis are often brought up to speed by more experienced Tenno. Theth - in this case - just happens to be the Tenno that saved the gaggle of children from Genshin Impact who have no idea how most anything regarding Warframe's story or lore works and have become new Tenno themsevles.
  • Named by the Adaptation: The Chosen Operator has two names in canon: the Voidtounge title "MARA LOHK" and the Entrati-given name "Ayatan". Here, he's given the name Janathon, shortened as Jana. The name is a corruption of the names Jonathan and Jona.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • The Man in The Wall panics and runs when Nahida uses The Power of Love to break through its defenses against her intruding into its nightmarish invasion of Klee and Sigewinne's dreams, a sign that it was messing with a God rather than just another whelp.
    • The girls panic when they discover that a squad of Kuva Grineer are about to enter the outpost they've been sheltering in. Before they can run, however, said Grineer are able to corner them and arrest them. Consequently, the Heavy Gunner of the Kuva Grineer squad then has a brief one when she realizes that a Tenno Warframe has entered the outpost before she and her squad are all killed by said Warframe - a Gauss Prime belonging to the main Tenno character, Theth.
  • Painting the Medium: When the Voidtounge is written out in the story, it is written in ALL-CAPS and bolded. It's also sometimes italicized.
  • The Power of Love: Love is described as the greatest tool in fighting The Man in The Wall's Indifference, both by Nahida in conversations with Klee, Sigewinne, and the Lotus, and by The Man in The Wall itself when Nahida confronts it about its actions in messing with Klee and Sigewinne's dreams.
  • Rage Breaking Point: Theth gets irrationally angry when describing Narmer and Ballas' atrocities, leading to him screaming about how the former Orokin wasn't loved by anyone and that he got what he deserved, spooking the kids.
  • Running Gag: Did you swear around Yaoyao? Expect her to rebuff you with a stern, "Language!"
  • Terms of Endangerment: The Man in The Wall refers to the characters it interacts with as terms implicitly used as Affectionate Nicknames. In canon, this translates to it addressing the Player Character as "Kiddo", although others get different names:
    • Sigewinne is called "Sige", the shortened form of name that her friends use - and, implicitly, that Wriothesley and Neuvillette use as well, alongside inmates at the Fortress of Meropide that have grown fond of her.
    • Nahida is called "Little Branch", the nickname Greater Lord Rukkhadevata used to describe her when they finally met in the denouement of Sumeru's Archon Quest.
    • Theth is called "Bucko", implicitly the nickname his parents called him before the Zariman jump accident.
  • The Team: The main Genshin Impact characters of the story are grouped as a team known as the Cute Force of Teyvat. Its roles are largely flexible with no decided heirarchy, though the kids generally fit into these roles:
    • Klee as The Leader, who often makes big decisions for her group on their behalf. Because her combat specialization is in bombs and grenades, she's also The Big Guy.
    • Diona as The Lancer, serving as a more mature foil to Klee's more innocent and childlike worldview. She's also The Medic and a Barrier Maiden due to her Vision allowing her to create a shield around herself and her friends and produce a healing field from her cocktail shaker.
    • Qiqi as The Baby of the Bunch and The Medic, due to having died when she was only a toddler and being stuck like that ever since as a Jiangshi; while also being able to heal her friends using her Adeptus magic. Most notably, she's the only member of Cute Force Klee refers to as "Little Sister".
    • Sayu as The Big Guy and The Medic due to her specialization in the claymore family of weaponry and her ability to spread out Elemental Energy via her Anemo powers as well as her ability to use a Daruma to create a field of healing.
    • Nahida as a Team Mom and The Smart One - she's the most emotionally mature of the group and a major emotional crutch the other kids often rely on and she's the single wisest and smartest member of the team to the point where Klee calls her "Biggest Sister" rather than "Big Sister".
    • Yaoyao as The Smart One and The Medic, as she's extremely smart for a kid her age and her Yuegui dolls can heal as well as harm.
    • Sigewinne as another Team Mom as while she's younger than Nahida, she's also just as emotionally mature and kind as Nahida is due to her nature as a Melusine. As a trained nurse and doctor, she's also The Medic and her making a deal with The Man in The Wall made her The Chosen One of her group as well.
    • Kachina as The Heart of the group, as she's the most Prone to Tears of them and the one everyone cares about a lot.
    • Iansan as the Team Dad, with her fairly relaxed and carefree attitude serving as a confidence booster for her friends. She also serves as The Big Guy thanks to her ability to produce a Megaton Punch with her Vision.
