burn bright until we're not

Go To

burn bright until we're not is a Star Wars fanfic by loosingletters, the same author as that of The Background Noise of Defiance.

It is a Fix Fic where Luke's friend (here husband) Biggs Darklighter survives the run on the first Death Star. Although the story is primarily concerned with the development of Luke and Biggs's relationship, it is not the sole focus of the fic.

burn bright until we're not provides the following tropes:

  • Adaptational Badass: In canon, although she was a Force user, Leia's skills were with diplomacy and politics. Here it's implied she knows the ways of the Jedi, as she has her own lightsaber.
  • Adaptation Expansion:
    • Biggs's great-grandmother is a freed slave.
    • Marriage ceremonies on Tatooine involve water and Japor snippets.
    • Rogue Squadron is named in honor of the Rogue One group.
    • Alderaanian siblings make marriage cords for each other when they get married, wearing them in their hair during the ceremony and wearing them as necklaces or bracelets after.
  • Adaptational Sexuality: In this fic, Luke and Biggs are gay. In Legends, Luke was straight, and in canon, the sexualities of Biggs and Luke are unclear.
  • all lowercase letters: The title of the fic is all lowercase, but the actual text of the story uses capital letters.
  • Amazon Chaser: Implied with Han, who definitely admires Leia for her combat skills:
"This is not the right place for nostalgia, Han!" Leia shouted at him and leaped over their cover, her lightsaber ignited.
"You're right," Han agreed, watching her tear her way through their attackers like an angry war goddess. This was way better.
  • Anachronic Order: Each segment of the fic jumps around in time.
  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: Luke resolves to come back to Tatooine to free the remaining slaves, tear down the makeshift grave he made for his parents, and "maybe watch in amusement as Biggs' mother would be forced to treat him politely as her son-in-law".
  • Data Pad: Luke reads several that are part of his father's archive when trying to figure out how to bring the Jedi order back.
  • Fix Fic: In addition to Biggs surviving his canonical death, Finn and Rey are rescued from their awful circumstances as young children and it's implied that Ben Solo never falls to the Dark Side.
  • Gargle Blaster: One segment has the Rogue Squadron try some bitter alcohol that Luke and Biggs find more tolerable in taste than what they had on Tatooine, to their peers' consternation.
Wes: The heck, Skywalker! This tastes like the stuff I put in my tanks! This isn't drinkable.
  • Generation Xerox: Luke taking after his father in looks and career choice aside as in canon, here he also marries his love interest in secret because someone wouldn't approve of their relationship, and Rex observes that his dynamic with Biggs is much like that of his parents — though unlike his parents, they don't have to hide their relationship by that point.
  • Genie in a Bottle: The lamp-dwelling, three-wishes variety exists as an old Corellian story.
  • Grow Old with Me: The fic covers time from the beginnings of Luke and Biggs's relationship as teenagers to when they're married and old.
  • Happily Adopted: Implied to be the case with Luke and Biggs' "many nameless and abandoned children", as Rey (one of said children) takes the surname "Skywalker".
  • High-School Sweethearts: Luke and Biggs marry each other when they're teens.
  • Mythology Gag: This time, it's Leia who's Rogue Squadron's "only hope" to help Biggs and Luke reconcile after an argument.
  • One-Shot Fic: The fic is one chapter comprised of smaller segments. Word of God is that it was written in a day.invoked
  • Promoted to Love Interest: In the original scenes between Luke and Biggs, Biggs is Luke's best friend. Here, Luke and Biggs are husbands.
  • Secret Relationship: Luke and Biggs have a secret marriage because Owen Lars wouldn't approve otherwise.
  • Shower of Love: Implied. Luke invites Biggs to join him in the shower after kissing him.
  • "Shut Up" Kiss: Leia announces that one day, she'll kiss Han to shut him up.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: In canon, Biggs dies when his X-Wing is shot by a TIE fighter during the run on the first Death Star. Here, he survives well into old age.
  • Titled After the Song: The fic's title comes from a lyric in the Waterpark song "Lucky People".
  • Took the Wife's Name: In one of the post-Original Trilogy scenes, Han is referred to as "General Organa" instead of "General Solo".
