Brighter Fires

Go To

Brighter Fires is a Warrior Cats fanfiction by space_pilot3000. The story was published in January 2020 and completed in February 2024.

At the climax of Forest of Secrets, Tigerstar's coup goes off as planned, and the new leader's first act is to frame Fireheart for Bluestar's murder and exile him from ThunderClan. Desperate for shelter and hated by their former clanmates, Fireheart and Greystripe are forced to turn to ShadowClan, itself still reeling from Brokenstar's reign. Back home, Tigerstar struggles with a fraying clan and his own failing grip on reality while a visit from her father's ghost warns Sandstorm that something is rotten in the clan of Thunder.

This work contains examples of:

  • Adaptation Name Change:
    • Due to the timeline split occurring before their naming ceremonies, Cloudtail, Thornclaw, and Brightheart are named Cloudstone, Thorntooth, and Brightclaw.
    • "Runningnose" isn't the actual name of the ShadowClan medicine cat, but rather a mean-spirited nickname. His actual name is Fleetwhisker.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: Firestar is changed from having mentored Bramblepaw to Tawnypaw, due to the former remaining in ThunderClan while both Fireheart/star and Tawnypaw become refugees and then permanent residents in ShadowClan.
  • Adaptational Villainy: Due to Fireheart and Whitestorm, among others, all being exiled from ThunderClan, Tigerstar and his followers have more or less sole access to the new crop of apprentices. This allows him to turn Cloudpaw and Brightpaw —later Cloudstone and Brightclaw— into his minions and enforcers.
  • Benevolent Conspiracy: On the ThunderClan side of things, the story follows Sandstorm trying to find evidence for Tigerstar's crimes and convincing other cats to side with her against him, eventually culminating in rebellion at the climax. This is both complicated and aided by him making her deputy. On the one hand, being the second highest ranking person in the clan lets her go and act more or less as she pleases. On the other, she's much more closely under Tigerstar's eye now and other cats come to view her as an enforcer of their tyrannical leader.
  • Clear My Name: Tigerstar frames Fireheart for the killing of Bluestar. Fireheart's primary motivation over most of the story is proving him wrong.
  • Dies Differently in Adaptation:
    • In canon, Bluestar drowns in the river after using herself as bait to lure the dog pack in. Here, she is murdered by Tigerclaw earlier on.
    • In canon, Dustpelt lives into old age and eventually dies in a battle against badgers in Bramblestar's Storm, between the fourth and fifth story arcs. Here, he's killed by Cloudstone on Tigerstar's orders.
    • In canon, Runningwind is killed by Tigerclaw while out on patrol. Here, he's mauled to death by the Snakerocks dog.
    • In canon, Whitestorm is killed during the battle against BloodClan. Here, he dies when the clans unite to fight the dog.
    • In canon, the dogs are driven off of the edge of the waterfall gorge to drown. Here, the singular dog is overwhelmed and slain by the combined forces of ThunderClan and ShadowClan.
    • In canon, Tigerstar loses all of his lives at once when he's killed by Scourge. Here, he's systematically executed, one life at a time, by his own clan.
  • Disabled in the Adaptation: A poorly-healed battle injury caused Fireheart to develop a permanent limp in a hind leg.
  • The Exile: As his first act as a leader, Tigerstar frames Fireheart for killing Bluestar and drives him and Greystripe out of ThunderClan. Later, he also exiles Whitestorm and Yellowfang for speaking out against him. Whitestorm and Yellowfang eventually return to ThunderClan, while Fireheart and Greystripe choose to remain north of the Thunderpath.
  • Hail to the Cheat: Some time after becoming leader of ThunderClan, Tigerstar meets and becomes infatuated with the city cat Sasha, and begins an affair with her. He impulsively takes her to join ThunderClan, which results in a disastrous falling out with his mate Goldenflower and in a great deal of disquiet in the clan that Tigerstar has to force into silence.
  • I Have Your Wife: When Cinderpelt balks at faking an omen to bolster Tigerstar's authority, he threatens to kill her apprentice Snowpaw unless she does as he says.
  • In Spite of a Nail: Despite the significant changes to the series' events, Brightpaw, now Brightclaw, still ends up mauled by a dog and losing her eye.
  • Internal Retcon: After he has Dustpelt executed for questioning him, Tigerstar forces the small number of cats who saw this happen —Cloudstone, who did the deed, and Sandstorm and Fernpaw, who were simply there— to claim that he had been a traitor and killed for attacking them, and later on to instead pretend that he was killed by the feral dog.
  • Kinslaying Is a Special Kind of Evil: A variant. After having spent most of the story under Tigerstar's influence, developing a major inferiority complex over his kittypet blood, and finally losing his position in Tigerstar's hierarchy, Cloudstone's ultimate snapping under pressure and indoctrination leads him commit a terrible and desperate act by attacking the ShadowClan to kill his mother, uncle, and newborn siblings in an attempt to "purify" himself.
  • Meaningful Rename: In addition to the traditional changing of names when kits become apprentices, apprentices become warriors, and warriors become leaders, Firestar renames Princess and Mowgli to Larkshine and Snakewhisker when they formally join ShadowClan.
  • Our Ghosts Are Different: After his death, a part of Redtail's spirit lingers in the mortal world, seeks out his daughter Sandstorm, and begs her to reveal and avenge his murder. Tigerstar also believes that he's being haunted by Bluestar's ghost in vengeance for killing her, but it's left unclear how much of this is real or in his head.
  • The Paranoiac: Over time, Tigerstar's grip on sanity begins to slip as he sees treachery in every slip of the tongue or hesitancy to carry out his cruel orders, while every accident, inconvenience, and misfortune becomes evidence that StarClan acts against him. He does see Bluestar's angry ghost stalking his every footstep, although it's unclear how much of that is her actual spirit and how much is his hallucinations.
  • The Runaway: As ThunderClan's situation continues to deteriorate, and in particular once Tigerstar's affair with Sasha causes his and Goldenflower's relationship to collapse, Tawnypaw decides to run away from home altogether and heads to ShadowClan, under the reasoning that "this is where traitors go".
  • Spared by the Adaptation:
    • In canon, Snowkit dies when he's carried off by a hawk. Here, this does not happen and he eventually becomes Cinderpelt's medicine apprentice.
    • In canon, Swiftpaw is killed by the dog. Here, his disastrous foray at Snakerocks never happens and he lives to become the warrior Swiftstrike.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Tigerstar cheating on Goldenflower with Sasha and then bringing his new paramour to ThunderClan and her making a nest in the camp nursery is a major part of Tigerstar's later chapters, particularly in how it affects tensions in the clan and destroys his bond with Goldenflower. However, once the climax goes underway, Sasha ceases appearing and isn't mentioned anymore, and it's left unstated what happened to her, if she left or remained in ThunderClan, or if her coming litter is even Tigerstar's for certain.
  • What If?: The story takes a pivotal event in the first trilogy —Tigerstar's attempted murder of Bluestar— changes it to having succeeded, and follows events from there.
