Brand New Horizon
is a fanfic about Spider-Man written by MaydayStan
.
The story is a massively ambitious rewrite of Spider-Man continuity, starting with One More Day and is the first part of a planned trilogy.
Peter Parker has finally proposed to long-time girlfriend Mary Jane Watson. At a time when things should be the happiest they have ever been in his life, something has been looming over both his and MJ’s lives. Something darker than either of them can grasp. Confronted with a chance to find the source of this darkness, it will change their lives, and the Marvel Universe itself, forever.
This fic is part of a wider series
, including a crossover with the DC Universe as Peter and Mary Jane meet Clark Kent and Lois Lane.
Brand New Horizon contain examples of:
- Adaptational Context Change: In the Blood Ties story arc, the conflict is played with more stakes and drama due to the fact Peter has a child on the way so if he gives Mister Negative his blood his unborn daughter will be at risk. Whereas in the original, it was all Played for Laughs because no one in NYC would have Peter’s blood in them.
- Adaptational Romance Downgrade: As a result of Peter and MJ still being married, none of the romantic relationships they had with other people, like Carlie Cooper and Robert Carr, following OMD have been excised.
- Adaptational Relationship Overhaul: Obviously, Peter and MJ are still married in this story, so this is a given.
- Piper Dali is now obsessed with Mary Jane instead of Bobby Carr.
- Adaptational Name Change: Instead of going as the Paper Doll, Piper Dali goes by Jackpot as a result of her obsession with Mary Jane.
- Big Damn Hero: the Human Torch saves the little girl being held hostage by Mister Negative.
- Brainwashed and Crazy: Mephisto uses his magic to influence Debra Whitman into attempting to kill Mary Jane.
- But I Can't Be Pregnant!: When back in her past OMD body, MJ is shocked to find out she’s pregnant.
- Cosmic Retcon: By rejecting the deal with Mephisto, Peter and MJ retconned their would be future.
- Dead Guy Junior: Peter and MJ agree to name their future daughter, May, in honor of Aunt May.
- Deadly Gas: In his plot against the Maggia, Mister Negative uses a toxic gas that specifically targets someone's blood. Not only killing the target, but their family as well.
- Deal with the Devil: The story opens with One More Day, so this is a given. After rejecting his original offer, Mephisto instead offers to save a dying MJ if Peter accepts having MJ forget about him. Peter instead rejects that offer with MJ's permission. Fortunately MJ is saved thanks in part to Doctor Strange who treats the bullet wound and The One Above All who eradicates Mephisto's hold on MJ's life force.
- Feeling the Baby Kick: In Chapter 6, MJ feels their baby kick while watching TV.
- Hero with Bad Publicity: It's Spider-Man of course, but since this takes place after Civil War Spider-Man is regarded as a fugitive for going against the superhuman registration.
- Laser-Guided Amnesia: After overcoming Mephisto, Peter asks Doctor Strange to perform a spell that will erase his secret identity from everyone's mind. This spell will also cause Peter and MJ to lose their memories of the previous timeline. This means that Peter and MJ lose their memories of everything that proceeds One More Day. The spell also removes any memory of Spider-Man's secret identity from everyone, save for Peter and MJ.
- Last Moment Together: Peter has this with Aunt May towards the end of the first arc. May encourages Peter to let her go.
- My God, What Have I Done?: Debra Whitman has this after being shaken free from Mephisto's influence and realizes that she shot a pregnant MJ.
- My Greatest Second Chance: Now fully remembering the death of their first child at the hands of Norman Osborn, MJ views the birth of their upcoming daughter as a second chance.
- Papa Wolf: Peter is determined to protect his child no matter what.
- Painting the Medium: When Li is Mister Negative his lines are written in bold font.
- Peggy Sue: The opening arc, involves Peter and MJ traveling back to One More Day.
- Right for the Wrong Reasons: Bobby Carr thinks that Mary Jane is having an affair with Spider-Man and that he's the father of her baby because of all the times Spider-Man has saved her. While he is right about Spider-Man being the father of MJ's baby its because Peter is Spider-Man.
- Take That!: MJ has a phone call with a producer named Mr. Nowe who is a parody of the current ASM editor, Nick Lowe. MJ is not pleased with the script they sent her. The title of the film is also called "Jackpot: Runed Language" a clear jab at the heavily maligned Dead Language story arc penned by Zeb Wells. As well as, MJ's short-lived time as Jackpot that came from the aftermath of that story.
- The following arc has MJ meet with Nowe where he uses similar excuses and shallow comparisons that Lowe has used in the past run comparing it to Doctor Zhivago and Rear Window.
- The Resenter: Debra Whitman becomes towards Peter after he publically reveals his identity as Spider-Man making her think he was Gaslighting her when they were dating. This easily allows Mephisto to influence her in an attempt to stop Peter and MJ from having their child.
- Title Drop: At the end of the first arc, Peter looks to the horizon of “A Brand New Horizon”.
- Villain with Good Publicity:
- Martin Li who is known for being a respected philanthropist who opens homeless shelters is also the supervillain Mr. Negative.
- Just like in canon, Norman Osborn becomes this once he is put in charge of the Thunderbolts. To the point, they have an action figure line.
- The Thunderbolts count as this as well seeing that they are supervillains tasked by the government to hunt down unregistered superheroes.
- Would Hurt a Child: Mr. Negative holds a girl hostage and only offers to let her go if Spider-Man gives him a sample of his blood, no doubt to use with his Devil's Breath bio weapon.
