Blue Beetle Rolls Out
is a Blue Beetle crossover with Transformers: Animated written by Epiclot214.
In this fic, Jaime Reyes becomes the next Blue Beetle after being bonded to the Scarab, Khaji Dah, and fights alongside Optimus Prime and his rag-tag team of Autobots to protect the Earth and the Allspark from the Decepticons and many supervillains.
Blue Beetle Rolls Out contain examples of:
- Actually Pretty Funny: In Chapter 4 a guard on a bank truck jokingly asks if they bank would miss a few coins, and other guard is quiet for a minute before admitting that it was funny.
- Later in the chapter, after Prowl pounces on Bumblebee, Khaji remarks that it was amusing.
- Adaptational Backstory Change:
- Dr. Otto Von Furth becomes Plasmus when he accidentally merges with the Sumdac Systems nanobots.
- Lisa Snart gets her Golden Glider equipment from the Kords, who in turn got it from Megatron.
- Adaptational Badass: Black Canary's sonic scream is powerful enough to actually knock out Lockdown!
- Adaptational Context Change: Chapter 8, unlike in canon, Megatron does get some destronium for his body, by essentially using Kords and Golden Glider as pawns. Likewise, unlike Nanosec, Golden Glider's suit doesn't turn her old and Bumblebee defeats her by making her crash.
- Adaptational Origin Connection:
- Ted Kord and Isaac Sumdac are friends in this universe, or at least they were before the former's death.
- Kord Industries invested Prometheus Black's bio experiments until they cut ties with him following the negative publicity caused by Blockbuster's rampage.
- Natasha Irons works at the Dino Drive park and basically created the Dinobots, before Sumdac and Megatron gave them upgrades. Grimlock is able to recognise her because of some memory drives she installed in them long before.
- Adapted Out:
- Tutor Bot is absent in this fic, with Jaime taking his place as Sari's tutor. Subverted as Tutor Bot was Sari's tutor until Jamie took the job. Chapter 6 reveals that he's being reprogramed as a tour guide for the Dino Drive park.
- Angry Archer is replaced with the Clock King. This is possibly to allow the introduction to the character he is based off of, Green Arrow.
- Blockbuster takes Colossus Rhodes place as Meltdown's henchmen. Likewise, Porter C. Powell's role in the episode is given to Victoria Kord.
- Nanosec has his role taken up by Lisa Snart/Golden Glider.
- Arbitrary Skepticism: Bulkhead is initially skeptical that a giant alien lifeform could come to Earth... until he remembers what the Autobots are.
- Ascended Fanboy: As the Scarab notes to Jaime after they bond, he's often fantasized about being a hero like the Justice Society of America, and now he's the new Blue Beetle.
- Berserk Button: While Bumblebee is chasing her, Golden Glider calls him "Bumbler", which immediately sets him off.
- Better as Friends: Jaime and Traci went out for a while before they ultimately decided they'd be better off as this.
- Blatant Lies: When Traci suddenly shows up at the Dino Drive park, Jaime questions why she's there, as she's not exactly a Dino buff, and she gives a flimsy excuse, which Prowl notes is ambiguous. It's soon revealed that Traci's actually there because Natasha Irons works there and she has a crush on her.
- Call-Forward: In Chapter 5, while complaining to Jaime about all the 'short' jokes he's been getting from Bulkhead, Bumblebee mentions that he was given the same kind of ridicule back in boot camp. Chapter 8 has him go into further details, explaining why Golden Glider calling him 'Bumbler' bothered him so much.
- Chekhov's Skill: During their sleepover, when Sari uses her key on a claw to try and grab Jaime, Khaji temporarily takes full control and slices it, to which Jaime tells the scarab not to do again. But when Megatron secretly attacks the plant, Jamie tells Khaji to take control again to defend him as he helps Bumblebee get to the control panel to shut down the plant.
- Commonality Connection:
- In Chapter 4, Traci relates to Prowl as she was a lone wolf before she became friends with Jaime and Paco and encourages him to try and get better acquainted with his teammates.
- Chapter 6, after learning how evil the Kords are, Megatron states that he likes him.
- Conspiracy Theorist: Uncle Rudy is this towards Issac Sumdac, believing him to be hiding something, since he never reveals where his robotic empire came from and when asked always gives a vague answer. And he's not wrong...
- Corrupt Corporate Executive: Victoria and Jarvis are directly described by Isaac to Megatron as this, the scientist saying that they have no regard for human life as long as they profit.
- Even Evil Has Standards: When the Kords task Golden Glider with kidnapping Blue Beetle for them, hinting that they have sinister intentions for him, she refuses as she may be a crook but she draws the line at kidnapping and potentially killing people, especially kids. She only agrees when Jarvis electro shocks her and threatens to keep it up until it kills her if she doesn't comply.
- Eviler than Thou: After Isaac Sumdac once again refuses to sell Sumdac Systems to Victoria Kord and her "Mad Uncle" Jarvis, the woman warns him that he's much worse then she is.
- Fan Boy: Jaime is absolutely starstruck when he finds out that Ted Grant is Wild Cat of the Justice Society and that Dinah is Black Canary and the daughter of the original one.
- Fantasy-Forbidding Father: Ted Grant refuses to let Dinah be the next Black Canary, due to the promise he made to her late mother, his teammate and the original Black Canary, to keep her out of danger. But when Dinah proves that she is dead set on becoming the new Black Canary no matter what he says or does, Ted decides that if she's gonna take up the mantle, then he'll have to train her. But warns her that it's going to be Training from Hell, but Dinah isn't worried.
- For Halloween, I Am Going as Myself: Jaime plans on going as Blue Beetle for Halloween. Both Sari and the Scarab think that it's a stupid idea, but he does end up using the costume of the previous Blue Beetle so it's not as blatant.
- Freudian Slip: While trying to wake up a knocked out Jaime on the train Starscream is holding hostage, Uncle Rudy calls him by his name. Unfortunately, Jaime's friends Paco and Traci were apparently on board the train as well and hear him, ultimately finding out Jaime's identity as Blue Beetle.
- Foreshadowing: At the beginning of Chapter 5, a commercial advertising Queen Industries appears on the Reyes family TV, then later Oliver Queen/Green Arrow shows up to help the Autobots and Blue Beetle defeat Blockbuster and Meltdown.
- Fusion Fic: Like all of Epiclot214's fics, the worlds of Blue Beetle and Transformers Animated are merged, with the Scarab, Khaji Dah, being aware of the existence of Cybertronians.
- Genius Bruiser: Blockbuster apparently designed his serum himself.
- Gossipy Hens: When Paco and Jaime find out about Traci's crush on Natasha, they excitedly want to hear more. Traci even lampshades this trope.Traci: What are you, a pair of gossip girls?
- Guest-Star Party Member:
- Green Arrow appears in Chapter 5.
- Natasha Irons/the new Steel appears in chapter 6.
- Ted Grant/Wild Cat and Dinah Lance/Black Canary appear in Chapter 7, where they help Rachet and Jaime rescue Optimus from Lockdown.
- Halloween Episode: Chapter 9, which adapts the canon episode.
- Heroic Sacrifice: Dan Garrett manages to force Megatron off the Autobot ship as they're entering Earth's atmosphere, but experiences re-entry himself, and dies not long after he and the Decepticon leader hit the ground.
- Hypocrite: During Meltdown's Motive Rant on how he wants to show the world that humans are superior to machines, Jaime notes that he's not exactly human anymore himself.
- Legacy Character: As in canon, Jaime is the third Blue Beetle, though only the second to use the Scarab.
- Locked Out of the Loop: The survivors of the mission that Ted Kord and several other Justice Society members disappeared on never told Isaac or anyone else what happened, they just announced that they were disbanding.
- Love at First Sight: Traci tells Jaime and Paco that her crush on Natasha started as this.
- Mirror Character: Ted Grant is this to Rachet. Both of them are grumpy Knights In Sour Armor and Shell-Shocked Veterans, who are so haunted by their Dark and Troubled Past that they refuse to talk about it to anyone, but open up a little towards each other.
- Mission Control: Paco and Traci establish themselves as this once they learn Jaime's identity as Blue Beetle and guess that Isaac Sumdac was one to the Justice Society.
- Mistaken Identity:
- When the Autobots first meet Jaime, they initially assume that he's Dan Garrett, since they don't know he died. It takes a little while for the Scarab to explain things to Jaime enough that he understands what's going on and manages to clear things up.
- Megatron also briefly mistakes Jaime for Dan when he sees footage of him but quickly notices the difference and later sees that he's not the same Blue Beetle. Doesn't stop him from wanting to destroy him though.
- Never My Fault: Meltdown blames Sumdac for his mutation, completely ignoring the fact that he actually did it to himself. Blue Beetle is quick to guess this and call him out on it.
- Precocious Crush: Sari develops one on Jaime, something Traci teases him for later. She also shows jealousy when Jaime tells her how he and Traci went out for a month before deciding to stay friends.
- Queer Establishing Moment: Traci is revealed in Chapter 6 to have a crush on Natasha Irons.
- Revenge by Proxy: Megatron wants to destroy Jaime, the current Blue Beetle, out of revenge for what the original Blue Beetle, Dan Garrett, did to him.
- Secret-Keeper: Jaime's friends Paco and Traci find out that he's Blue Beetle, thanks to Uncle Rudy.
- Ship Tease: Traci and Nat get plenty of this in chapter 6.
- Shout-Out:
- In chapter 2, when Victoria Kord shows up at Sumdac Systems, the latter asks how she got past her security and she responds that she pretended she was a bar of soap and gave them the slip.
- When the heroes find out Nat works as a mechanic at the Dino Drive, Sari asks "Isn't she a little young for that" which she agrees.
- Small Role, Big Impact: Dan Garrett, the original Blue Beetle, is only in chapter 1 before he passes away following his crash-landing to Earth as a result of forcing Megatron off of the Autobots' ship and being found by a young Ted Kord and Isaac Sumdac. He then tells the former to take care of the scarab before dying.
- Taking the Bullet: When Starscream tries to fire a blast at Sari, Jaime jumps in the path of the attack.
- Very Punchable Man: Both Dan and the Scarab think that Sentinel has a very 'punchable face'.
- Villain Takes an Interest:
- Megatron's curiosity is peeked when Sumdac tells him about how Victoria and Jervis Kord have advanced technology and an evil disregard for human lives, not unlike Megatron himself.
- Aside from wanting Blue Beetle, the Kords also want to use the Autobots for their own nefarious purposes.
- Villain Team-Up: Chapter 8 has Megatron anonymously work with the Kords, and to an extent, Golden Glider, to obtain the Destronium for his body.
- What the Hell, Hero?:
- Paco and Traci berate Jaime for keeping his identity as the Blue Beetle from them. After he explains that it would put them in danger, noting Starscream's attack and how he most likely will return as well as other Decepticons and other dangerous threats, the two reluctantly admit he had a good reason to. However, they state that they're going to help him out with his heroics, danger or no danger.
- Dinah gives a brief one to Rachet for not going to save his friend [Optimus] from Lockdown because of his trauma and refusing to open up about it.
- Wham Episode:
- Chapter 7 has Jaime meets Wildcat and see the birth of the new Black Canary. He also briefly meets Blitzwing on Lockdown's monitor, telling the Decepticon that if they want him and the Autobots, not to send a bounty hunter. But given how dangerous Blitzwing and his partner are, Jaime may have made a big mistake in revealing himself.
- Chapter 8, reveals that the Kords want Blue Beetle for something called the OMAC project and are bidding their time until on opportunity to nab him presents itself.
- White Sheep: Ted Kord was this compared to Victoria and Jarvis, according to Sumdac.
- Written-In Absence: Sumdac explains to Megatron how the Justice Society went on a mission where half of them, including Ted Kord, just disappeared without a trace.
- You Didn't Ask: After he's accidentally transported to the Autobots location, the scarab activities a system that allows Dan Garrett to safely breathe in space. When Dan says that he didn't know it could do that, the Scarab's response is this.
- You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: When Lisa/Golden Glider is captured by the Autobots when her abduction of Blue Beetle fails, Jarvis activates a failsafe in her suit that shocks her, and would have killed her if the heroes hadn't disabled it.
- You Remind Me of X: Both Bumblebee and Dinah Lance remark that Rachet and Ted Grant are just like each other.
