Black Lagoon Barcode

Go To

"No man is invincible, and therefore no man can fully understand that which would make him invincible." Wise words are often forgotten. Corruption is created by Power, and Power breeds Corruption. And we have to "handle" those who've fallen too far into the abyss. Then again, if you see someone is trying to climb out. I know you'll give them a helping hand. Good Luck, Rock.
Clera

Black Lagoon: Barcode is a crossover fanfic written by Fireworks174 between Black Lagoon and Hitman. It also contains elements from Gangsta. and Jormungand. It can also be read on Archive Of Our Own here

Rokuro "Rock" Okajima is a Composite Character with Agent 47. Roanapur beware.

Word of God has announced a prequel series focusing on Rock/47 and Clera's first meeting in the ICA training program, exploring how they became the greatest duo the assassin organization has ever seen.

Black Lagoon: Barcode has the following tropes:

  • Adaptation Personality Change: Rock goes from a naive salaryman who tries to solve problems without bloodshed to a stone-cold killer who has no problem holding a gun and pulling the trigger, not that he likes killing.
  • Adaptational Angst Upgrade: In canon Black Lagoon, Rock had a fairly normal life before coming to Roanapur, the worst he had to suffer was being estranged from his family and kissing up to his corrupt bosses. Here, his entire family was murdered in front of him while he was only 6, and for nearly a decade, he, along with 200 other boys, were the pawn of a Mad Scientist who wanted to create the perfect killer. By the time he escaped, he was the Sole Survivor.
  • Adaptational Backstory Change: In this story, Agent 47 isn't a clone, instead he's a regular boy who was kidnapped and subjected to vicious human cruelty by a Mad Scientist who desired to make a Class One Human, the perfect killer.
  • Adaptational Badass: Since Rock is a Composite Character with Agent 47, he's much, much more dangerous than his canon counterpart, so much so that Revy felt like she was powerless against him.
  • Ascended Extra: Clera was Agent 47's handler for one mission in one of the Hitman video games before never appearing again. Here she's Rock/47's Childhood Friend and primary handler. She's also the daughter of one of the heads of the ICA.
  • The Blind Leading the Blind: Clera notes that Rock/47 is doing this with Revy, trying to lead a mentally ill woman to normalcy when he has no experience of being normal.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: He may be a stone-cold killer here, but as in canon, helping people is Rock's hobby, even if they don't feel like it. Examples include helping Revy improve her mental state and assisting a couple in escaping Roanapur.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Revy can get extremely jealous if any girl tries to flirt with or get close to Rock, given how she was strangling Eda. She also got jealous of Rock's closeness to his handler, Clera, despite Rock seeing her as more of a sister to him.
  • Death Seeker: Revy takes this to the extreme, as she'll usually give everything she has in a fight hoping she'll die. Rock's appearance helps her lose this desire.
  • Demoted to Extra: Since Rock is not part of the Lagoon Company, Dutch and Benny haven't made many appearances, nor done much to affect the overall plot.
  • Dramatic Irony: Clera, Rock/47's handler, the one who should be encouraging her to stay away from anything that could compromise him, urges him to pursue a romantic relationship with Revy.
  • Evil Is Petty: Despite helping out by eliminating a madman who held Roanapur hostage with a nuke, Balaleka gets payback against Rock by making it nearly impossible for anyone not to recognize him.
  • I Choose to Stay: Rock/47 decides to stay in Roanapur, to complete several contracts in the city but also to help Revy improve her mental state.
  • Insecure Love Interest: Revy. She was worried, given how much of a hot mess she is, whether or not Rock would want anything to do with her. Only when she listened to a modified version of his Dark and Troubled Past did she decide to risk it all on a single chance. And when he accepts, she still has a fear that he'll one day leave her behind.
  • Like Brother and Sister: Rock sees Clera, his handler, like a sister to him, since he's known her since she was nine years old.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Revy publicly and violently threatens anyone who dares try to touch Rock, catching everyone who knows her reputation off guard, as Revy has never defended someone, unless for a job.
  • Positive Friend Influence: Rock/47's presence in Revy's life has done some wonders for her mental state. While she still swears like a sailor and has a fierce temper, she doesn't just kill people because they piss her off, nor does she just steal money to have it. Even when he leaves Roanapur for a mission, she hasn't gone back to her old ways, despite how much she misses him.
  • Professional Killer: Rock is a Composite Character with Agent 47, the poster boy for this trope, so of course he's one. He'll only kill someone for a contract.
  • Real Name as an Alias: 47 uses his real name, Rokuro Okajima, to sneak about Asahi Heavy Industries' boat with the Nuclear Warheads. While it works to get him aboard, it soon becomes what outs him towards the crew, forcing him to kill everyone aboard.
  • Ridiculously Average Guy: Arguably one of Rock/47's greatest weapons as an assassin. His presence and face are so plain to others that he can flawlessly blend in anywhere to carry out his assassinations. However, as he spends more time in Roanapur, his face starts to get more and more recognized, so he has to resort to being seens a mentally unstable to keep people away from him.
  • Shipper on Deck: Clera, 47/Rock's Handler, pushes him to pursue a romantic relationship with Revy.
  • "Shut Up" Kiss: Revy gives one to Rock when he begins to rant over all the things he made Rock go through growing up to create the perfect killer. It works to calm him down.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: The main reason Revy falls in love with Rock is because he is the only person in Roanapur, and possibly the world, who would help her without taking advantage of her.
  • Super-Soldier: Rock is described as a Class One Human on the spectrum of human evolution. To compare, normal humans like Revy are Class Five, and Twilights, another type of super soldier, are only Class Four.
  • Underestimating Badassery: Back in the ICA training camp, Rock/47 and Clera were the youngest people in the program, being 15 and 9, respectively, while everyone else was in their late 20s at least. No one took them seriously, instead looking down on them. By the time they graduated, they had achieved the highest scores in the program's history. In the present day, despite only taking 3% of the ICA's contracts a year, they are responsible for over a third of their yearly income.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Rock/47 tells Revy this, which is the catalyst that causes her to fall in love with him.
