When an opportunity presents itself, Hawks will do anything to get Izuku Midoriya (his little brother in all but blood) as far from the HPSC as possible. They’re not gonna make it easy.

Birds of a Feather is a My Hero Academia fanfiction written by KageNekem who also writes Mischief (MHA) and Strays in the Night. It can be found on Archive of Our Own here.

Birds of a Feather contains examples of:

  • Adaptational Badass:
    • Izuku has a fire Quirk that allows him to create weapons, wings, and other elaborate constructs, not to mention years of training under the HPSC. Not to mention how he is set to receive One for All eventually.
    • Ochako has been working as Mirko's intern for over two years before the story started, making her far more Strong and Skilled than in canon.
  • Adaptational Name Change:
    • Having been working for the Commission for years, Izuku goes by "Phoenix" instead of "Deku".
    • Ochako goes by "Starfall" instead of "Uravity".
  • Adaptational Superpower Change: Originally believed to be a simple Quirk that allows him to change his body temperature, Izuku has a fire Quirk that allows him to create elaborate constructs, fly, and create incredibly hot flames.
  • Adaptational Villainy: The Hero Commission is a full-blown Government Conspiracy that not only has no qualms about killing anyone who stands in their way (even outside of Japanese soil) but also kidnaps children with powerful and useful Quirks, brainwashes and turns them into their pet assassins until they are old enough to become Pro Heroes.
  • Animal Motifs: Several characters are associated with animals:
    • Izuku and Hawks are birds, obviously.
    • Ochako and Mirko are rabbits.
    • Bakugo is a dog, more specifically a rabid one.
    • Hitoshi and Himiko are cats due to their sneaky and chaotic nature.
    • Eri is a unicorn.
  • Asshole Victim:
    • Overhaul and most of his lieutenants are killed during the raid between Chapters 16 to 18. No one other than Shin Nemoto feels sorry for them, only for the fact that Izuku had to be the one to kill him.
    • After overestimating his value and the HPSC President's patience, Chronostasis is summarily executed by the woman after Overhaul dies during the mission, having lost any value to her and the organization.
  • Batman Gambit: Hawks finds himself running into a problem after saving Eri, needing to find a place where not only the HPSC has no way to reach over, has state-of-the-art security, and most importantly, Izuku would approve more than the Commission. At first it seemed like an impossible task, until Izuku became All Might's successor, thus allowing them to use Might Tower as Eri's new home, placing her in the only place in Japan the Commission has no power over and completely assuring the girl will have a stable life being protected by the Number One Hero. The fact that All Might publicly reveals Eri's existence by the end of the mission guarantees that no one will try to make a move against the girl without bringing too much attention even if something happens to him.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: Izuku suffers from a severe case of it thanks to a lifetime of gaslighting and emotional torture at the hands of the Commission, to the point he genuinely doesn't understand why Ochako would prioritize saving his life instead of securing an objective during a mission, or why the obvious experiments the Commission forces him to go through are enough to make a person horrified.
  • Death by Adaptation:
    • Inko and Hisashi Midoriya are killed during a villain attack when Izuku was a child, which led to HPSC finding him and recruiting him in the first place.
    • Overhaul, Deidoro Sakaki, and Hekiji Tengai are all killed by the end of the Shie Hassaikai Raid from Chapters 16 to 18. Chronostasis is executed by the President in the following chapter.
  • He Who Fights Monsters: Hawks' biggest fear is that Izuku ends up falling down this path. While the boy always had concerns and regrets over killing people for the Commission, it wasn't until he found out what Overhaul did to Eri that for the first time, Izuku wanted to kill someone, and nothing anyone said or did would change his mind. Sadly, Izuku ends up succeeding on it after Overhaul forces his hand, and the fact that Eri thanks him with tears in her eyes gives more conviction he did the right thing and that despite all of its cruel methods, the HPSC is right. It gets worse in Chapter 22 when even after quickly subduing a villain, Izuku still kills the guy because he was a danger to civilians, something he wouldn't have resorted to before.
  • Knight in Sour Armor: Hawks is a major example of it. He does a lot of bad things, mostly to keep people and Izuku safe, but he feels extreme guilt over it, and he doesn't expect anything other than death or a lifetime in jail by the end of his journey.
  • Spared By Adaptation: Hawks mentions that amongst the HPSC agents, there are a couple of brothers under the designation of 1108 and 1109. From the descriptions, it's clear that 1108 is Tenko Shimura (he is mentioned being a gamer, while 1109 is his sister Hana. It's part of a Mythology Gag to Mischief (MHA), where Hana/Hirona is mentioned to be a movie fangirl.
  • You Are Number 6: All Commission agents lose their names upon joining the program, only gaining back upon graduation when they reach 18 years old.
    • Hawks' previous designation was 0148.
    • Izuku is 7714.
    • Himiko Toga is 5731 while Hitoshi Shinso is 2315.
    • From their descriptions 1108 is Tenko Shimura while his sister, 1109 is Hana Shimura.
