Beetlejuice Checks In

Go To

Beetlejuice Checks In is Beetlejuice/Hazbin Hotel crossover fic by Epiclot214. Currently ongoing. The author has written a rewrite, which can be found here.

Beetlejuice has spent his whole (after)life being a duplicitous con artist maiming and conning recently deceased humans for kicks. But can he find a new path forward at a certain hotel set up by Hell’s heir?

The series takes its cues from the movies, musical, and cartoon as characters and references to each work are featured.

Beetlejuice Checks In contains the following tropes:

  • Adaptational Origin Connection:
    • Beetlejuice is an overlord, though he doesn't own any souls because he released them for some unknown reason. And also got his summoning power from making a deal with Lucifer.
    • Jacque the Skeleton, Ginger the Tap-Dancing Spider, the Monster from Across The Street, and Miss Argentina were all souls that Beetlejuice owned before he set them free.
  • Armor-Piercing Response: When Beetlejuice joins Charlie Morningstar in her meeting with Adam and Lute, he pokes holes in their justifications for the exterminations and their views on angels and demonkind.
    • Adam claimed that angels don't make mistakes and that he never made a mistake in his life or the afterlife. Beetlejuice pointed out a number of mistakes he made, like his children Cain and Abel. Adam throws a blank look at at Beetlejuice and tells him not to bring his children into this, but Beetlejuice brings up the fact that Eve wasn't the only one who ate the forbidden fruit; Adam claims that he was tricked and was pardoned after he went to Heaven, only for Beetlejuice to point out that he was forgiven for his mistake, but not the majority of Hell.
    • Lute tries to justify her actions when Beetlejuice says that she and Adam are the worst kind of people by stating that they kill because it's their duty and it's the final punishment for scum like him, a “horrid, low-life, sinful pack of garbage who deserves to choke on his own blood and left in a gutter”. In response, Beetlejuice stares blankly at her and says, “Well, duh. I'm a demon. What's your excuse?” While Adam stops Lute from attacking Beetlejuice, the fact that Lute got angry at all and never tried to disprove Beetlejuice's words speaks volumes about how his response exposed more about her character than she was comfortable about.
  • Bait-and-Switch: Beetlejuice pulls one on Vox through Pentious' spy watch, when the TV Demon demands to know what his business is at the hotel and Beetlejuice pretends to give in and tells Vox to come in closer. Once he does, Beetlejuice loudly says "Blow me" and smashes the watch as Vox yells in anger. A watching Alastor approves.
  • Blackmail: Subverted. When Alastor catches Beetlejuice about to sneak out to confront Velvette after he promised Charlie he wouldn't, he says he'll keep tight-lipped about it if Beetlejuice tells him the real reason for checking into the Hotel, since he doesn't like "not knowing things", i.e. Beetlejuice having ulterior motives. Beetlejuice doesn't give in, even noting Alastor's hypocrisy before practically daring the Radio Demon to rat him out.
  • "Both Sides Have a Point" Remark: A three-fer. Beetlejuice, Charlie, and Vaggie all have a conversation with each other when the former plans and later goes through with taking revenge on Velvette when she disses him on social media. Beetlejuice is right that she deserves it, since Velvette is a respectless, ageist, and downright bitchy troll who revels in social abuse and cyberbullying, but Charlie points out that ignoring her slander will make him the bigger person and will be one step closer to redemption, and Vaggie rightfully, and angrily, states that his actions made the hotel look like an even bigger joke then it already was.
  • Casting Gag: Beetlejuice says that when he hears Sir Pentious' voice, he finds him relatable. The latter's voice actor played Beetlejuice in the musical.
  • Cats Are Mean: Invoked by Beetlejuice. His revenge on Velvette has him sic some very vicious wild kittens on her fashion models and utterly destroying the dresses their wearing, right in front of a furious Velvette.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Beetlejuice's default state is a darker take on this trope, or as Angel Dust puts it, a total maniac.
  • Composite Character: This version of Beetlejuice is stated to be a composite of his film, cartoon, and theater versions.
  • Conditioned to Accept Horror: Beetlejuice is surrounded by blood and gore, but doesn’t let it distract him from reading his newspaper.
  • The Dreaded: Beetlejuice is a figure of horror for the denizens of Hell, with a pig demon being spooked when he finds himself in the presence of the Overlord.
  • Easy Road to Hell: When Angel asks how Ginger got into Hell, she admits that she plagiarized her dance moves from others.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Beetlejuice is introduced not being bothered by the blood and gore commonplace to Hell, and gleefully and cheerfully “rewarding” a pig demon for knowing his name by sending a vicious rat after him.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Beetlejuice may be into chaos and lethal pranks, but even he thinks that Vaggie sending the guests into a warzone just to teach them to trust each other is messed up.
  • Hidden Agenda Villain: "Villain" is relative, but Beetlejuice has some reason to feel that he needs to get into Heaven ASAP, despite not being in any real danger from the Exorcists, but what that is has not been revealed.
  • Holding Back the Phlebotinum: Adam and the Exorcists do have a weapon they believe can finish off Beetlejuice, but Sera refuses to authorize its use.
  • Hypocrite: Alastor taunts Beetlejuice after catching him about to break his promise to not engaging in fight with Velvette after she dissed him on social media. Beetlejuice is quick to point out that Alastor would do the same if it were him and Vox. Alastor, however, retorts that he's not a guest and he didn't promise Charlie.
  • Insult Backfire: After the Over Lord meeting.
Velvette: Hmm. Fine. Safe travels back to the nursing home, effers. Kiss my ass.
Beetlejuice: I would. But I don't kiss any part of leprechauns! HAHAHA!
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Beetlejuice may be a chaotic, mean-spirited prankster at best, but he is dead right when he says that Adam and Lute are intolerant assholes, and even more so when he calls Lute a psycho.
    • When he hears about Vaggie's "trust exercises" Beetlejuice points out she went overboard and that if she wants to teach trust, she needs to give them a reason to trust her. And all she did to everyone was yell at them, scold them, and literally threw them into a warzone.
  • Mr. Exposition: Husk tells Angel Dust about Beetlejuice's backstory, explaining how he became an overlord, but for unknown reasons decided to set all the souls he owned free. And if that wasn't crazy enough, Husk goes on to explain how on every Extermination Day, Beetlejuice gets most of the exorcists to chase him, where they fall victim to his pranks, gags, and slapstick.
Angel Dust: Holy shit! [Laughs] Forget a screw loose! This guy's an effing maniac!
    Husk: I know.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • When Velvette tells Beetlejuice that he should've been gone like the rest of the dinosaurs, he shoots her down by stating that he's the Semi-Inflatable, Biodegradable, Jack-Of-All-Tradable, Ghost with the Most who everybody loves and thus will never go out of style.
    • When he makes his presence known at Adam's meeting, Beetlejuice says his iconic catchphrase, "It's Showtime!".
    • After Sir Pentious is forgiven for being the Vees mole, Beetlejuice threatens that if he ever pulls a stunt like that again... to pretend that he's him and literally spills out his guts all over the snake.
Beetlejuice: See, I'm willing to do the work.
    • During the trust exercises, Tina reveals that she regrets the way she died, saying that if "I Knew Then, What I Know Now" she'd never would have had her little 'accident'.
  • Noodle Incident: Beetlejuice tauntingly asks Lute if some of the other exorcists are still picking out the chicken feathers...
  • Oh, Crap!: Husk has an annoyed example of this when Beetlejuice first arrives at the hotel.
  • Riddle for the Ages: All of Hell is wondering why Beetlejuice set all the souls he owned free.
  • The Rival: Beetlejuice has one with Velvette, similar to the one between Alastor and Vox.
    • To a lesser extent, he also has one with Alastor.
  • Running Gag: Chapter 5 has Nifty repeatedly tries to stab Ginger, much to both her and Vaggie's ire.
  • Secret-Keeper:
    • Almost immediately after meeting her face to face, Beetlejuice realizes that Vaggie's an exorcist, but promises to keep it a secret.
    • Wolf Jackson promises Camilla that he won't say a word about her killing an angel.
  • The Sixth Ranger: Jacque, Ginger, Monster, and Tina join the hotel staff on the recommendation of Beetlejuice. Jacque becomes the hotel fitness instructor, Ginger the entertainment, Monster the bell hop, and Tina the record keeper.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Beetlejuice's song in Chapter 1 is a parody of "The Whole Being Dead Thing" from the musical.
    • Husk describes Beetlejuice's tangle with the Exorcists as a chase like you'd see in a Looney Tunes cartoon.
    • Beetlejuice says that he'll give Velvette his own showcase that'll rival the scene from Carrie.
    • When he first meets him, Angel calls the Monster Across the Street, Gossamer.
    • In chapter 2, Beetlejuice sings a parody of "Glass of Water" from My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic. Then later, during his revenge against Velvette, the two sing a Quarreling Song based off "Big Bad Cat" from Rugrats Go Wild!.
  • Storybook Opening: The fic opens with the canon narration of Hell’s origins.
  • Wham Line: In Universe.
    Beetlejuice: I'm sorry.
    [the whole room goes silent]
Charlie: What... What did you say?
  • "You!" Exclamation: Both Vaggie and Lute yell this when Beetlejuice shows up at the hotel and the meeting respectively.
