"You would dare! You did all this for yourself, not me! Because of you, my honor has been tarnished! Because of you, I have a fear that I'll never be rid of! Because of you, I am half of a man! Because of you, I have to live in fear of the woman who gave birth to me! I HATE YOU!"
Ranma, showing Genma exactly what he thinks of him

Becoming a Man Among Men is a Ranma ½ Divergence Fic by Dragon 6.

Diverging from the point of Jusenkyo, Ranma discovers Genma's journal where he learned of all the deals he's done in his name and the plans he has in store for him. Needless to say, he wasn't happy Genma planned to live off of his hard work. After getting forcibly taken to the Tendo Dojo, he became adamant against going with the wishes of Genma and Soun's plan to have him married off to a Tendo girl. Ranma is determined to be the exact opposite of what Genma is and to branch off from the Anything Goes branch to form his own branch of fighting. He also isn't afraid to speak his mind and only shows respect to those he feels deserves it.

This fanfic provides examples of:

  • Action Girl: Ranma in his girl form, Kodachi and Shampoo.
  • Adaptational Heroism:
    • Kodachi is more genuinely loving rather than a Yandere like canon.
    • Nabiki's scams are treated sympathetically as she used them to provide for her family for years.
  • Adaptational Villainy: Ukyo is basically made into a female version of Ryoga played straight, bent on revenge against Ranma no matter what.
  • Adaptation Personality Change: Ranma is quite different from how he is in canon, owing to his efforts to distance himself from his father.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Much of the side characters like Kasumi, Nabiki, and Kodachi get some character exploration now that Ranma doesn't give Akane the time of day due to her brattiness.
  • Ascended Extra: Kasumi due to being Ranma's Love Interest rather than just a side character.
  • Balanced Harem: Ranma with Shampoo, Kodachi, and Kasumi for starters.
  • Berserk Button:
    • NEVER harm Kasumi before Ranma just to get to him.
    • Genma is this to Ranma as well for just being there.
    • He also doesn't like it when people call Kodachi "crazy."
  • Bratty Teenage Daughter: Kasumi and Nabiki are decent, but Akane is a complete brat who feels she's entitled to everything.
  • Breaking Speech: Akane delivers this to Kasumi simply for spending time with Ranma, whom she detests, and considers Kasumi a fraud. Ranma and Nabiki tear Akane a new one for the insensitive words.
  • Bullying the Dragon: Genma stupidly and constantly tries to impose his will on Ranma despite the fact he's way beneath him in strength and skill. Akane and Kuno as well.
  • Chick Magnet: Ranma of course. Akane just sees this as an excuse to call him a pervert.
  • Damsel in Distress: Ranma had to save Kasumi after she was kidnapped by Ukyo.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Akane in all her fights. The worst was when she challenged Kodachi in a clan duel, which was a serious matter she didn't think much of as the prideful tomboy was too full of herself and deluded herself into thinking she could beat Kodachi, despite the fact Kodachi had beaten her numerous times in the past. After losing, Akane was forced to never challenge Kodachi again or bring dishonor upon her family name.
  • Enraged by Idiocy: Ranma feels this way towards Akane for siding with Ryoga's explanation of the bread feud.
  • Fat Bastard: Genma. He continually tries to conform Ranma to his standards in order to ensure his own future.
  • Fatal Flaw: Akane, Genma, and Soun are all blinded by their pride and anger, which only make them look immature and bratty.
  • Happily Married: Felicia and Jon Talbain are married with a teenage son, Tamashi Talbain, who might have a thing for Nabiki.
  • Humiliation Conga: Happens to Genma, Soun and Akane, which is completely justified.
  • Hypocrite: Genma and Soun would harp on about honor at Ranma, demanding him to marry Akane and carry on the schools because "honor demands it". When Akane loses an honor duel against Kodachi and is made to uphold the terms, Soun and Genma tried to weasel their way out of it, not once reprimanding Akane for her foolish actions leading to it. Kasumi, however, would not stand for it and accepts the terms much to the fathers' and Akane's disbelief.
  • It's All About Me: Akane and Genma ooze this.
  • Jerkass: Genma is a selfish asshole who tries to force Ranma to do his bidding for his own benefit. Akane is a jealous spiteful brat who hates Ranma for being a better fighter as well as being a boy.
  • Jerkass Ball: While Soun is much nicer he still wants Ranma to marry one of Soun's daughters to uphold an agreement made years ago (and so he can live off Ranma's earnings for the rest of his life). Ranma is friendly with Nabiki, can't stand Akane, and develops romantic feelings for Kasumi. Naturally, insists he has to marry Akane.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Akane tries to rip Nabiki a new one for treating her like a spoiled brat and disrespecting their father. But Nabiki fires back with a "The Reason You Suck" Speech about how while their father was drinking his life away and Akane practiced martial arts, Nabiki and Kasumi were the two who kept things running. Kasumi cooked and cleaned for the entire family while Nabiki's scams were literally their family's sole source of income for years.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Genma tried to control Ranma to ensure his own future, but was blown out of the water once Ranma found his journal. He later manipulates Akane and Ukyou to attack Ranma while he was weakened by saying that Ranma sent Kodachi after them. Of course, Ranma had just learned the Hiryu Shoten Ha technique.
  • Mundane Solution: When the Gambling King showed up to collect on the Tendo Dojo as per an agreement made by a child Ranma, it looked like there would be a gambling match to win the dojo back. Nabiki, however had a better solution. She simply called the police on him for his history of conning little kids of their valuables (which also included the child of the police chief, giving them even more incentive to arrest and cart him away).
  • Never My Fault:
    • Akane to the extreme. Doesn't help that Soun and Genma always side with her.
    • Ryoga refuses to take any responsibility and simply blames Ranma for everything wrong with his life, like Ranma not waiting four extra days to have the fight with him. While Ranma accepts the blame for cursing Ryoga, that's all he'll do, taking none of the blame for the other stuff he's accused of.
  • Oh, Crap!: Soun and Genma started spreading rumors about a "Dojo Destroyer" going about taking dojo signs in an effort to get Ranma and Akane to cooperate and fight him together. Then the REAL Dojo Destroyer appears before the two fathers and soundly trounced them both.
  • Polyamory: Shampoo and Kodachi eventually decide to share Ranma.
  • Pushover Parents: Kasumi, Nabiki, and Ranma consider Soun this towards Akane from how he always coddles her and sides with her on everything.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: These usually get thrown at Akane, Genma, and Soun by some of the cast.
  • The Resenter: Akane towards Ranma and Shampoo, hating the fact they're better fighters than her.
  • The Rival: Ryoga still tries to beat Ranma in any way he can.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Akane big time. Kuno ties with this.
  • Sore Loser: Akane would throw bratty tantrums when she loses a fight, claiming her opponents "cheated".
  • Spoiled Brat: Akane. She would whine to Soun whenever she gets called out on her bratty behavior by anyone, even by Nabiki and Kasumi. When Akane entered a tournament, she threw a tantrum when she lost and called out that her opponent "cheated", where she had to be escorted out before she could cause a further scene.
  • Trash Talk: Ranma throws this in during fights against those he has no respect for.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Genma with how he keeps angering Ranma by trying to control him.
  • The Unapologetic: Akane towards Ranma, thinking that whatever she tries to do to him isn't wrong, despite her two sisters calling her out on how immature it is.
  • Would Hit a Girl: Ranma, unlike canon, has no qualms about this since he had long since thrown away Genma's ideals about being manly.
  • You Fight Like a Cow: Ranma does this a lot, especially against Akane. It's also through this he expresses his disgust at how the future of the Anything Goes will fail due to how the so-called heir to the Tendo branch is pathetically weak.
