A Waning Silence

Go To

A Waning Silence is an AU Fic of Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? written by JL Davenport. Can also be viewed here and here .

Alfia goes to see her sister's son, Bell. Captivated by him, she abandons her plan to help Erebus and Zald force Orario to produce a hero. Erebus and Zald leave her be and in the years since, she raises Bell as her own. When the time comes for Bell to go to Orario, Alfia follows him and helps him find his footing as an Adventurer.

This fic contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Adaptation Deviation:
    • Alfia identifies the book Syr gave Bell as a grimoire before he reads it, which gets Bell panicking and he immediately tries to give it back to Syr. Syr is minorly upset she doesn't get to see him panic even more from using it up and admits outright she was the one who got the grimoire for him.
    • Because of his close relationship to his aunt, Bell's first spell is the sound-based spell Sagitta Sonus, not the fire/lightning-based spell Firebolt.
    • Ottar sends not one, but two, Minotaurs after Bell.
  • Adaptation Name Change: Bell's first title is not Little Rookie, but Vanadis Odr.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul:
    • A core of the story is Alfia deciding to raise her nephew Bell as her own where in canon, she never met him.
    • Bell and Hestia become romantically involved and sexually intimate where in canon, Hestia's feelings for Bell went unnoticed.
    • Unlike canon, Bell reciprocates Syr's affections.
  • Atrocious Alias: In Alfia's opinion, Vanadis Odr is a horrible title for her nephew and it infuriates her that Freya gave him that title.
  • Brought Down to Normal: Freya commissions Barca for special cursed artifacts that can suppress her divine power completely so as to allow herself to be able to hide her divinity from Hestia when she meets her in her mortal guise.
  • Conditional Powers: The skill Eternal Pledge to the Goddess of the Hearth that Bell develops grants the user several amazing abilities. These are fire resistance and a situational status boost when defending loved ones. Effects also increase based on the user's feelings. However, there's a catch. If the user violates the pledge they made that game them that skill, all effects are reversed.
  • Dramatic Irony: Alfia believes Bell never met Freya, not knowing that Syr, whom she knows is close to Bell, is Freya's mortal guise.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Alfia is perfectly happy for Bell to have a harem, and she's fine with it if Bell decides to do it with prostitutes. What gets her infuriated is the idea of Bell joining Ishtar's familia and her whores accompanying Bell's journey to the top. According to Alfia, the women who join Bell's rise to the top should command respect and have the admiration of the public, not be a prostitute anyone of the streets can sleep with for a bit of money.
  • Harem Seeker: Unlike canon, Bell doesn't abandon his dreams of getting a harem for himself.
  • If Only You Knew: Lili tells Bell that adventurers from low-ranking familias keep their heads down around members of the high-ranking familias, and the Bell must absolutely avoid drawing the attention of specifically Ishtar Familia, the Ganesha Familia, the Hephaestus Familia, the Apollo Familia, the Loki Familia, and Freya Familia. Bell keeps silent since he already knows people from more than half the list, but then Heith walks right up and gives him a friendly greeting, shocking Lili.
  • The Immodest Orgasm: When Bell and Hestia get it on, they get loud and it keeps Alfia up. Alfia finds it too awkward to tell them to keep it down though and has to put up with it.
  • Immune to Fire: The skill Eternal Pledge to the Goddess of the Hearth grants the user greatly improved fire resistance.
  • Shipper with an Agenda: Alfia is supportive of Bell trying to pursue Ais specifically because the idea of Bell taking Loki's most prized flower pleases her greatly. When Riveria, Loki's other most prized-flower also develops an interest in Bell, she's even more pleased.
  • In Spite of a Nail: Despite Alfia not taking part in Erebus' plan, Zald still does, and it appears that everything else up until Bell and Alfia arrived in Orario remained the same.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: Because Alfia does not participate in Erebus' plan, she does not suffer her canonical fate of dying after being defeated by the Astrea Familia.
  • The Resenter: Alfia hates the fact that the current top familias are Loki Familia and Freya Familia, with everyone seemingly having forgotten that Zeus Familia and Hera Familia used to be the reigning familias.
  • You Could Have Used Your Powers for Good!: Alfia is derisive of the Crozzos letting themselves be bought by Rakia and make their legendary Crozzo Magic Swords for Rakia to use in conquest, saying they could have instead either helped the world fight against all the monsters on the surface or help Adventurers in Orario make greater pushes into the Dungeon.
