A Surge of Heroic Intent

Go To

The course of the Fourth Holy Grail War was forever changed when a newcomer, the martial artist only known as Akuma, entered the fray as the war reached its zenith. The outcome of the war is known only by a precious few, as many more died in the raging flames that engulfed Fuyuki City following the battle's climax.

But in the present, Fuyuki has been rebuilt bigger and better than ever. Fighting has become a way of life in the city, which has become a mecca for martial artists of all stripes. Fighters young and old duke it out in the streets of "Fighting Fuyuki", all in search of strength, glory, money, or simply to prove themselves the best in the country.

So where does that leave Shirou Emiya, who lost everything in the flames ten years ago? His family, his home, and even his future as a magus were all burnt to ashes by Akuma's purple flames. How will he seek the strength he needs to prevent further tragedy and become the hero of justice he's always wanted to be?

The answer is simple.

He'll use his fists.

A Surge of Heroic Intent is a Fate/stay night/Street Fighter Fusion Fic written by TurtSnacko, which also crosses over with other Capcom fighting games like Darkstalkers and Rival Schools. It can be read on SpaceBattles.com here.

A Surge of Heroic Intent contains examples of:

  • Adaptational Badass: Due to the Street Fighter aspects of the setting, martial artists can train themselves to become as powerful as Servants. Even side characters who were helpless against the supernatural like Taiga are deadly martial artists who can shoot Sword Beams in this story. Archer expresses disbelief when Killer Bee calls Taiga faster than him.
  • Adaptational Angst Downgrade:
    • Illya is happy to play the part of Shirou's adorable little sister following the destruction of the Einzberns and the Matous in the wake of the Fourth Holy Grail War. She makes it clear to Rin that she has no intention of rebuilding the Grail and that she's happy with her current life surrounded by a loving family despite being every bit as ruthless and cunning as her canon counterpart.
    • The destruction of the Matous and being adopted by the loving Mrs. Kasugano has prevented Shinji from developing a complex from being a Muggle Born of Mages. This leaves him a much happier and kinder person who is a Tsundere at worst toward his family and friends while being Shirou's and Sakura's de facto manager.
  • Adaptational Curves: As noted by Archer, Shirou is significantly more muscular than he was at the start of Fate/stay night as a result of his martial arts training.
  • Adaptational Superpower Change:
    • Shirou's magic circuits were destroyed in cataclysm caused by the Fourth Holy Grail War and he never had Avalon implanted in him. This means he can never become a magus or summon Servants. So Shirou has instead taken up the path of a martial artist, learning how to fight and manipulate ki from his adoptive brother, Luke.
    • Similarly, Sakura never took up the Matou magecraft due to the family's destruction. She took takes up martial arts and ki manipulation, emulating the Ansatsuken utilized by Ryu and Ken (as well as Akuma).
  • Always a Bigger Fish: Akuma is a "demon lord" of a martial artist on par with Servants as powerful as King Arthur and Gilgamesh. But even he can be cowed by the likes of Morrigan Aensland, who thrashed Akuma when they last fought. When she confronts him again during the events of the story, Shirou compares Akuma to a wild animal realizing it has been cornered by something higher on the food chain.
  • Awesome by Analysis: Sakura gained her mastery of the Ansatsuken solely by watching Ryu use it on TV, reverse-engineering it by imitating his movements and intuiting his ki control. She has become proficient enough at it to use Hadoukens at will, with her greatest attack being the Shinku Hadouken that can obliterate a single-story house.
  • Badass Teacher: Taiga is still a high school teacher in this story as well as a Master Swordsman. But as a ki manipulating martial artist, she possesses speed and power on par with Servants, much to Archer's disbelief when Killer Bee declares Taiga faster than him.
  • Big Entrance: Morrigan's arrival is heralded by enormous bat wings that blot out the stars before emerging from the darkness like a painting coming to life. Even the flames created by Akuma's ki bend to her will as she approaches.
  • Blood Knight: The majority of the characters in the story are fighters who enjoy the thrill of battle and the feeling of testing themselves against those stornger than them. But none are as bloodthirsty as Akuma, who lives only for battle and constantly seeks worthy opponents to test himself against.
  • Boring, but Practical: Shirou's only ki technique, named Heavy Armament, uses ki to amplify his striking power, recover from injuries, and harden his body to make it as tough as steel. Compared to flashier techniques like a Kamehame Hadouken, it's comparatively mundane. But he gets a lot of mileage out of it even when facing superior opponents who can still hurt him while he's using it.
  • Composite Character:
    • The Sakura Kasugano of this story is also the Sakura Matou of Fate/stay night, having been adopted by Mrs. Kasugano following the Fuyuki Fire and the destruction of the Matou family. Sakura is much peppier as a result, as well as the strongest ranked fighter in her age group. But the darkness from what the Matous did to her remains, making her violently protective of Shirou to the point of wanting to quash his fighting spirit for his safety.
    • Killer Bee is combined with Gray from Lord El-Melloi II Case Files. Killer Bee has Cammy's backstory of being an operative for Shadaloo created by Major Bison as the ultimate living weapon. But she also has Gray's backstory as being a girl intended to be the vessel of King Arthur's power. She is even able to use Excalibur with her leg.
  • Death Is Cheap: Lancer's Gáe Bolg reverses causality to impale the heart before the spear is even thrust. He demonstrates the deadliness of this technique when he uses it on Morrigan Aensland, the World's Strongest Woman shortly after his summoning. However, Morrigan's immense power allows her to quickly construct a new body for her to inhabit.
  • The Greatest Style: According to Kuzuki, all martial arts centered around killing others with one's bare hands are pale imitations of the Ansatsuken, or the Assassination Fist.
  • Happily Adopted: Mrs. Kasugano is a far better parent than any member of the Matous. Both Shinji and Sakura adore her and are proud to bear the Kasugano family name instead of the Matou one, with the implication that the destruction of the Matous and Mrs. Kasugano's love made them far more well-adjusted people than they would be otherwise.
  • Head-Turning Beauty: Morrigan is described as inhumanly beautiful, enough to make men's eyes ache just looking at her. But rather than titillating others, Archer and Lancer describe seeing her beauty as something that warns them to run in the opposite direction on sight.
  • Ki Manipulation: Nearly every fighter in the story manipulates their internal energies, or ki, to achieve feats of superhuman strength, speed, and durability as well as more dramatic effects like Sword Beams the traditional Kamehame Hadouken.
  • Made a Slave: As Einzbern homunculi knockoffs, Killer Bee and her operatives are easily manipulated by Illya once she gets her hands on them. She magically compels them to be unable to leave the Emiya estate and renders them incapable of harming anyone without Illya's express consent. Sakura is uneasy about how this makes them little more than slaves, but the alternative is letting these trained assassins loose upon the rest of the city.
  • Made of Iron: Shirou survives having nearly all of his limbs broken, multiple broken ribs puncturing a lung, a bleeding liver, multiple skull fractures, and second-degree burns over 40 percent of his body following his run-ins with Killer Bee and Akuma. By all rights, he should be dead, but Shirou clung to life through sheer willpower long enough for him to get magical medical attention.
  • Nobody Calls Me "Chicken"!: Batsu is initially resistant to joining his classmate Hinata on Taiyo Academy's team for the upcoming fighting competition, until a spectating Shirou asks if he's scared to face anyone new. That's all it takes to goad Batsu into a Mêlée à Trois against Shirou and Roy.
  • Not What It Looks Like: Shirou wants information that Killer Bee and her operatives had collected on the disappearing students around Fuyuki (which includes his friends Akira and Daigo), so Killer Bee proposes a spar to test him. Mainly wrestling. In Shirou's bedroom. Guess what his guardians think is going on when they come up to investigate the racket, not helped by Killer Bee complimenting his "performance" as a cover story.
  • Papa Wolf: As revealed by Illya in Chapter 29, Kiritsugu went on a mission to infiltrate the Einzbern stronghold after the Fourth Holy Grail War as he did in canon. Unlike in canon, he had the help of Luke and two others. Together they massacred the rest of the Einzberns to protect Illya, leaving her the family's last survivor.
  • Point of Divergence: Akuma's entry into the Fourth Holy Grail War at the behest of Kariya Matou changed the course of the war. The Holy Grail War system was irreversibly destroyed by the clash between Akuma, Saber, and Gilgamesh, while the Matous were wiped out at Akuma's hand. Akuma's actions left lasting marks on both Shirou and Sakura, destroying Shirou's magic circuits and giving Sakura a desire to grant Akuma the fight to the death he desires as thanks for saving her life.
  • Related in the Adaptation: Luke Sullivan befriended Kiritsugu Emiya during their travels. Following Kiritsugu's death, Luke becomes Shirou's and Illya's adoptive older brother and guardian as well as Shirou's mentor in martial arts.
  • Shameless Fanservice Girl: Morrigan considers humanity positively prudish for their embarrassment over being seen in the nude. She arrives naked in Rin's basement after building herself a new body after Lancer speared her previous one through the heart and has to be told to put clothes on before finally relenting out of politeness.
  • Shoddy Knockoff Product: Illya refers to Killer Bee and her operatives as knockoffs of the Einzbern homunculi process. All of the traits are there, but done poorly by Shadaloo. This lets Illya, the last heir of the Einzbern magecraft, to easily compel them to obey her once they're weakened.
  • Summon Bigger Fish: Felicia knows she can't beat Akuma on her own, so she calls in one person she knows who can: Morrigan Aensland. Word of this shakes Akuma, while Morrigan's actual arrival makes it clear that there's nothing he can do to stop her from spiriting him away.
  • Sword Beam: Taiga shoots a ki-slash from the edge of her katana while fighting Killer Bee, who nullifies it a sword beam of her own. Luke and Taiga later dish out a combo attack to collapse a warehouse on top of Killer Bee, dicing huge girders to bits with ki slashes while Luke destroys the supports.
  • The Worf Effect: When he is first summoned, Lancer shows his chops by impaling Morrigan, who previously was seen scaring off Akuma from behind with Gae Bolg and killing her in one shot. Not that it keeps her down for very long.
  • Villains Out Shopping: Shirou is very understandably shocked when not only does he see Akuma running a fruit stand, but his customers are not intimidated by him in the least. And that's before Elena shows her face.
  • World's Strongest Woman: Morrigan Aensland is the undisputed top dog of the setting, having defeated the galactic threat Pyron and cemented herself as the reigning queen of Makai. Even Akuma, who could battle the likes of King Arthur and Gilgamesh, is helpless before her might and he can do nothing to prevent her from kidnapping him when Felicia summons her to stop him.
  • Wound That Will Not Heal: Gáe Bolg's curse prevents any wound it inflicts from healing through natural circumstances. This is effective even on the most powerful of beings, making it an incredibly deadly weapon even before its causality-reversing effect is taken into account. He demonstrates this by killing Morrigan's physical vessel with a single thrust that she cannot recover from immediately after his summoning.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: This is Archer's reaction when he learns he's been summoned not to fight in a Holy Grail War but as a benchmark/sparring partner for Rin until she's strong enough to face Akuma and avenge her father.
