- Foil: Alyn to Tyrion Lannister. Each is the youngest son of a lord of the Westerlands, whose mothers died in childbirth. Each is scorned by the family save for one brother, and had an impulsive tryst with a lowborn girl, though with very different results since Donnel didn’t live long enough to meet Maerie, who bore Alyn’s child: Podrick.

- Outliving One's Offspring: Raymun had a stillborn daughter named Mayella.
- Taking the Bullet: Alyn died on Great Wyk while defending Lenyl Lefford.
- Teen Pregnancy: Hadwyn Payne was conceived when Elinor Moreland slept with Lord Moreland's squire Donnel.
- Viking Funeral: Elinor Payne was cremated, since the ground was too hard for a burial.
- Uriah Gambit: Hadwyn fell prey to one of these during a battle on Great Wyk. A Marbrand man challenged him to a duel, and though Hadwyn didn't duel him, the Marbrand men deliberately pulled back, allowing Hadwyn to be overwhelmed by three Ironborn and killed.
- What Happened to the Mouse?: Raymun went missing around the Sack of King's Landing.
