Go To

Starbound Roleplay, sometimes abbreviated to Starbound RP or just SBRP, is a roleplay based on the indie game Starbound by Chucklefish Games. The story follows that of a wide cast of characters, all hailing from different corners of the universe, and begins about two years after the events of the game's story campaign. It took place in a Discord server, complete with RPBot for the sake of dice rolls, mainly for the roleplay's combat mechanics.

It first began on March 3rd, 2018, and has been continuing every day since then. The roleplay is structured into major arcs, with sections in between to break them up and provide some respite between stretches of drama and angst. Additionally, there are a few filler channels, where less focused, fun stories can be explored. Many of the locations are consistent with the game's world, particularly the Outpost, but several others are entirely unique to the roleplay... with a few real-world references here and there.

Narrators

The Narrators are, in short, the participants of the rp itself. Each narrator has (or has had) at least 1 player character in the rp.

  • Go Mad from the Revelation: Leo, changed into a Kirhos by the race gun, didn't handle things too well when Neo admitted that most male Kirhos are captured and used to repopulate their species. He even develops a second personality, Meo.

  • Red Is Heroic: Red jacket, red hat, red armor...

  • Covered in Scars: Covered in burn scars from being set on fire by a golf club. It makes sense in context.
  • Friendly Fireproof: Averted. Leo was the one to wield the flaning goof club.
  • Sssssnake Talk: Like all other Florans, Lilli speaks with a slight lisp. Hers is far less pronounced than other Floran characters' lisps, however, and can even speak without it with some effort.
  • The Exile: Was chased out of her tribe for the supposed murder of Ivyan, the village greenfinger and her big brother figure. Keyword supposed; Ivyan had been sick for a week prior to his death.

  • Artificial Limbs: Uses these as replacements for his legs and left arm. They can change form with a suitable transformation card.

Player Character of: Quote
Status: Alive
Primary Color: Hot Pink
Introduced in: The Cult Arc
An energetic and friendly scientist, Amitie is a player character in SBRP.
  • Adorkable: Giant spectacles, a great deal of knowledge and a clumsy attitude.
  • Awesome Backpack: The medigun's medipack, which stores each and every chemical used for healing, buffing or numbing.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Kind, energetic and chipper on normal basis, tick her off and you'll be wishing she wasn't the one to trusted to fix you up.
  • Blind Without 'Em: Averted with Amitie, who can seemingly do basic tasks with or without them.
  • Child Prodigy: Amitie is 17 in human years, (although twice that much in Felin years), and has made no small number of incredible inventions, her crowning achievement being her medigun.
  • Cower Power: When she's unarmed and not alone, she'll usually resort to this.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: Made a backpack that can heal wounds, a gun that can change your race, a personified artificial intelligence, toasters...
  • Hollywood Healing: Got a wound that isn't decapitation? Amitie can probably fix that.
  • Redheads Are Uncool: The nerdy Amitie sports a head of ginger hair.
  • Trying Not to Cry: Does this often.

Starbound RP has been confirmed to contain examples of these tropes:

  • Action Girl: Most female characters play this straight. Lilli, Neo, and Tomoko all fit snugly into this trope. The only girl that doesn't is Amitie, a scientist with a passion for medicine.
    • Fijit also subverts this trope. Despite carrying dozens of daggers on her person at all times, she's one of the more peaceful characters in the entire cast.
  • Ascended Extra: Tuna and Shotgun. Both characters served as simple antagonists in the Crystal Arc, but had their backstories and personalities greatly expanded upon in later story arcs.
  • Archnemesis Dad: Rigel and Leo, who are constantly fighting for one reason or another.
  • Armor Is Useless: Played straight. There is no defensive stat aside from higher HP, and it doesn't change if the character is wearing street clothes or an iron plating. Leo's shield is the only minor subversion of this, if you count shields are armor.
  • Artificial Limbs: Etzin, three times over. Alegor also had a prosthetic leg, as a result of a run-in with a Floran village.
    • Artificial Limbs Are Stronger: While not necessarily more powerful, Alegor has attached a rocket to his prosthetic, and Etzin is able to insert different cards into his mechanical limbs, making both of these far more versatile than your standard arm or leg.
  • Awesome Backpack: The pack that makes up half of Amitie's medi-gun. It generates all of the healing energy that the gun releases, and can even raise a character's stats or change their elemental affinity.
  • Back from the Dead: Eli, making her an undead, angel-winged, armored warrior.
  • Beast Man: Almost every character with fur or feathers applies here. It's almost easier to list off the characters who avert this rather than play it straight.
  • Berserk Button: Many characters have at least one, from insulting living or dead friends or actually hurting said allies, to snooping in their room and taking their chocolate bars without permission.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: A few characters fit into this, but Amitie takes the cake. She's kind and curious and almost never negative - but if you try to steal her inventions, you'll walk away with claw marks all over.
  • Beyond the Impossible: The race-changing gun, as lampshaded by Alegor and Amitie.
  • Cool Starship: Most characters who live on a ship. Some are huge and well maintained, like Raidyn's and Rigel's, while others are smaller and more recently purchased, like Etzin's.
  • Covered in Scars: Lilli, specifically the entire right side of her face and body being covered in burn scars.
    • Much of the cast, albeit in a much more minor fashion. Many characters have more than a couple scars from battle.
    • To some degree, Fijit, who has scars all over her arms.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Played straight for most of the cast. If a character's backstory is known, it's almost certainly traumatic.
    • Subverted with Amitie, who seems to lack any sort of tragedy to her past.
  • Data Pad: The communicator, or comm. Sizes range from a watch-like device to a full-on digital pad.
  • Freeze Ray: Subverted. No monster or character has yet to be frozen by the freezing rocket-launcher Alegor built in the Crystal Arc. Unless you count the Outpost's SUN.
  • Friendly Fireproof: Somewhat averted. Characters on the same side can only attack each other on purpose or by specific means, such as a risky Extra Tech.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: Amitie, Meisse, and Alegor, with their mechanical know-how.
    • To a smaller degree, Etzin, well-versed in ship repairs and his own prosthetics.
  • Girls Love Stuffed Animals: Lilli, the strongest, hardened, and most stoic character, has a big Poptop plush in her room. Additionally, Neo has a tiny Kirhos plush that she takes with her, especially after Meo disappears.
  • Hartman Hips: Etzin's hips. Amitie and Tomoko have even lampshaded this privately. Amitie herself also plays this straight.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: Etzin and Leo. They even refer each other as brothers.
  • Hollywood Healing: No matter what injuries anyone has sustained, a quick visit to Doctor Binzel at the medical centre is all it takes to turn them around. Sometimes they take longer to heal, such as Neo's concussion and Rigel's stomach wound, but there's nothing the doctors cannot heal.
    • Amitie takes this trope to a whole new level with her medigun, healing massive injuries in seconds.
  • Interspecies Friendship: Most of the cast get along very well, despite being made up of humanoid plants, birds, and cats, to name a few.
  • Interspecies Romance: Felin Ciera and Human Lufia, Kirhos Neo and Novakid Rigel, and Floran Lilli and Human Leo all play the trope straight. Only one relationship, Etzin and Groose, averts this.
  • Killed Offscreen: Alegor and Meisse play this straight, with Rigel finding Alegor's remains and Leo and Lilli finding Meisse's, respectively.
  • Limited Wardrobe: Almost every character wears the exact same clothes every day. Few change into their pjs to sleep.
    • Etzin takes this to the extreme, with his closet mostly consisting of identical t-shirts.
    • Averted with Lilli, who has several different outfits.
  • LEGO Genetics: The race gun, mark I. Was easily able to swap two characters' races with special needles.
  • Meatgrinder Surgery: Amitie performing heart surgery on Etzin, in their first encounter.
  • Mistaken for Gay: The straight Leo, when seen petting Etzin. Etzin himself subverts this.
  • Be the Ball: Morphketball, a sport similar to basketball, but with one person using the Morph Ball tech and moving around.
  • Not What It Looks Like: Played straight, with Amitie pinning down Rigel to keep him from escaping the ship, just as Leo beams aboard.
    • Additionally, Neo has teased Leo and Etzin for the former constantly petting the latter.
  • Odd Friendship: Leo and Neo. One's an optimistic, group-oriented, melee-focused human, the other's a Kirhos gunner who tends to go it alone. Their friendship is just as quirky, albeit very close and sweet.
  • One-Hour Work Week: Applies for almost every character with a job, such as Lilli's position at the Gap and Lufia's job at the medical centre.
  • Plucky Girl: Amitie, and to a degree, Neo. Both are brave young women who are normally rather optimistic and cutesy.
  • Rotating Protagonist: Depending on the current story arc, any character can take up the Protagonist mantle.
  • Science Fiction: The story begins in the year 3540, and the characters use teleporters and communicators just as well as current-day humans use cars and smartphones.
  • Shapeshifting Excludes Clothing: Played straight. Some characters, when transformed by the race gun, keep roughly the same body shape, but more extreme changes, such as Leo and Neo swapping races, leaves Leo with baggy jeans and Neo with tight clothing.
  • Sssssnake Talk: All the Florans, including Lilli, Jewel, Fijit, Salahab, and most every minor character who happens to be a Floran.
    • Also includes Rigel, when the race-gun turned him into a Floran.
  • Story Arc: SBRP features several of these, such as the initial Crystal Arc, the Tournament Arc, and so forth. They make up the bulk of the roleplay as a whole.
  • Teleporters and Transporters: The primary form of travel in the roleplay. Every ship and major location is equipped with a teleporter, and most characters have a communicator to teleport to bookmarked locations with.
  • Token Human: In a world with humanoid plants, cat, birds and rodents, Leo Morales and Lufia Rhyes are the two normal humans, both having been born and raised on Earth.
  • Tournament Arc: Makes up the entire second story arc of the roleplay. They event is run by a Felin named Mr. Host, and despite hundreds of fighters entering, Lilli eventually comes out victorious.
  • Tragic Keepsake: Many characters have examples of these:
    • Leo has had many of these, most prominently his sister's baseball cap, which he wears everywhere, and Meisse's shield, which he fights with at all times.
    • Lilli still wears the crown that belonged to Ivyan, her Greenfinger and older brother. He also took his sword, although Leo wields it in battle.
    • Neo still has Meo's earring. She has since pierced it into her doll's ear, despite Meo having disappeared.
  • Tree Top Town: Lilli's village, like most Floran tribes have.
  • Trying Not to Cry: Amitie, primarily, but also Etzin on occasion. Both characters are among the most emotion of the entire cast.
    • Leo subverts this somewhat, hiding his face behind his hat rather than attempting to suppress crying.
  • Visible Silence: Several characters, especially those consistently aboard Raidyn's ship (nicknamed the Ellipsis for this reason) use ellipses repeatedly. Special mention goes to Lilli, who was the most quiet, even among this group, until a few arcs in.
  • Wall Jump: Lilli, during the Crystal Arc, and Leo, while searching for a new weapon immediately after that arc.
