Lazy Days is an animated slice-of-life comedy series written and illustrated by Gavin Nowak. Set in the fictional city of Kepler during the Turn of the Millennium, the show focuses on the tenants of the run-down Moritsugu apartment house. Chronically-unemployed college student Jeri who finds methods to work around her terrible luck, her slacker best friend Moe, enigmatic tabloid photojournalist Warble

This series provides examples of:

• Animesque: The visual aesthetic is heavily inspired by anime, right down to the expressive characters, the punchy, saturated color palette, and the bumpers before and after the commercial break. Fittingly, the show takes place in the early 2000s, when anime was first becoming popular in North America. The series creator notes Azumanga Daioh, Nichijou, the 80s anime of Dirty Pair, and the works of Rumiko Takahashi (Urusei Yatsura, Maison Ikkoku, Ranma ½), among others, as direct influences on the show's art style.
• Anti-Humor: Vignettes can occasionally end with something completely out of left field, or even without a punchline at all. Both Played Straight and Subverted by a Brick Joke.
• Art Shift: Implemented for comedic effect.
• Broke Episode: All. the. time. Jeri tries to balance college, past-time jobs, and life on a regular basis. The rest of the cast can't be considered much better considering they all live in a run-down and cramped apartment building.
• Work Info Title: A fair majority of the show is characters lounging around and doing mundane things.

• Academic Athlete: The vice president of her class who runs like the wind, handles a sledgehammer like a baseball bat, and launces herself through the air like a javelin.
• The Ace: She generally has any skill you can think of all rolled into one, though she appears to only be just a bit above being a Jack of All Stats.
• Against the Grain: Jeri has never been one for following the norms of how people are expected to act. Ever since she was little she has always been interested in demonstrating the novelty of things that most people consider to be either dull or utterly tacky. She is also firmly anti-authoritarian, and one of her greatest fears is becoming a greedy capitalist.
• Allergic to Routine: She absolutely loathes routine, leading to her constantly changing things up on a whim or pursuing any sort of interesting activity. Her life motto is to make the most of every day.
• All Issues Are Political Issues: Much to her disdain, Jeri's logic typically finds a way to interpret even the most subtle or unassuming of narrative concepts in film or television through a political lens. Downplayed for the most part, because Jeri tends to keep these thoughts to herself.
• Always Second Best: Since Jeri dabbles in a variety of different fields, she is never actually considered the best at anything.
• Animals Hate Her: [[Irony Ironically]] enough for a dog owner, she has a history of being bitten by dogs.
• Arch-Enemy: Played for Laughs. She is one for Grimaldo because he is very quick at finding her underhanded methods. He tends to find Jeri somewhat untrustworthy and doesn't allow her to indulge in her hedonism; despite this, this doesn't mean that they dislike each other.
• Awesome Ego: Downplayed, since she's not so much downright arrogant than she is simply self-confident. Her pride can be easily excused, whether it be thanks to her entertaining personality or the fact that she can back up almost every single one of her boastful claims.
• Be Yourself: True to her welcoming and non-judgy nature, Jeri is a firm believer that everyone should be free to enjoy whatever they want, and nobody should judge them for it, no matter who they are.
• Big Sister Instinct: Jeri is quite protective of Grimaldo due to their Like Brother and Sister dynamic, and is quick to jump to his defense or go out of her way to secretly help him out by greasing some palms.
• Book Smart: Zigzagged between this and Book Dumb. She gets alright grades even despite the fact that she tends to neglect studying until the last minute, which is something she does at her own behest. Even if she is lousy with her grades, she's a capable strategist with the benefit of additional street smarts to call upon.
• Boring, but Practical: When it comes to handling a situation, she's surprisingly low-key, but is nevertheless incredibly effective. And although she may lack the coolest or strongest abilities, she is fairly good at most attributes, and as such lacks some of the more glaring weaknesses of other character types.
• Born Unlucky: A big aspect of her character.
• Boyish Short Hair: She has a masculine appeal to her character, and naturally has short, shoulder length hair. Zigzagged since she also grows it out for a time, as well as ending the series with a pixie cut.
• Brainy Brunette: Her hair is a nice shade of hazelnut brown, and she's shown to be highly creative, a fast learner, and a quick thinker. Her lackluster grades are a combination of the school system's curriculum failing to accommodate her particular needs and just general carelessness on Jeri's end.
• Brilliant, but Lazy: She is pretty clever, streetwise, and a great strategist, but sees very little value in applying herself in school.
• But Not Too Foreign: She is of mixed Puerto Rican and Italian descent.
• Butt-Monkey: A primary aspect to Jeri's vignettes are depicting how the entire universe is out to get her. To list a couple of things that she has suffered through, from falling out of a window, amassing mountains of debt, getting run over numerous times by a motorcycle, getting a bowling ball dropped on her head, and her plans rarely ever coming to fruition.
• Canine Companion: She has a pet German-Australian shepherd named Rugburn.
• Challenge Seeker: This tends to be Jeri's main goal in her day-to-day life. She greatly enjoys trying out activities that are entirely alien to her, pulling off all-nighters, defending the apartment house from a supposed intruder, performing as the leading lady in one of her classmate's independent movies despite not prior experience, and even participating in some lucha libre wrestling.
• Character Tics: She has quite a few.
  • She has a habit of either twiddling her thumbs or stroking her chin when she's in deep thought.
  • She affected with chronic hiccups.
  • She is an endearingly goofy Perpetual Smiler.
• The Charmer: A Gender-Inverted trope. She's endlessly charismatic and charming, so much so that she can develop a deep bond with strangers in a matter of minutes. She invokes this from time to time to smooth-talk her way out of precarious dilemmas, although her efforts don't usually succeed.
• Chewing the Scenery: Her oddball antics are known to admirably steal the scene.
• Class Representative: She's mentioned in passing to be the vice president of her class. It also comes as a surprise that Jeri happens to have a positive reputation among her classmates, an interesting inversion of her typical status as the resident ButtMonkey.
• Club President: The captain of the girl's swim team.
• Competition Freak: Whatever the case, Jeri can find a way to turn anything into a competition. And she's definitely a solid competitor. Merely saying the word is enough to get her curious.
• Cosmic Plaything: Jeri gets caught up in so many hilariously absurd situations that it's easy to come to the conclusion that she can only be part of a massive cosmic joke.
• Cosplay: As a giraffe and a military tank.
• Crazy-Prepared:
  • Jeri has come to expect frequent misfortune, and as such she has made numerous backup plans for any situation. The problem is, she doesn't plan well enough so her preparedness comes with quite a number of blindspots. Either that, or her bad luck invariably undoes her plan anyway.
  • Among the "useless" keychains attached to her bag, one is a CPR face shield and another is a functioning miniature trumpet that can be implemented in case of emergency. Jeri also carries cayenne peppers wherever she goes because they can save someone who's having a heart attack.
  • Jeri and a university acquaintance named Reagan exchange favors on a regular basis. Meaning, yes, half of the time Jeri is the one being inconvenienced.
• Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Downplayed, as she isn't so much an idiot as much as she is emotional and reckless. Nevertheless, she is Crazy-Prepared, an Extracurricular Enthusiast, and a Challenge Seeker with a bevy of unexpected talents amassed from her various college endeavors and part-time jobs.
• Cursed with Awesome: According to one of her childhood stories, her Italian grandmother used to fool around a lot with other people's husbands when she was young, which resulted in one of the wives cursing her entire lineage with very fickle luck. The tradeoff to his is that whenever she or her close relatives get lucky, they get really lucky.
• Dark and Troubled Past: Prior to renting an apartment in the flophouse, she was ill-treated by her roommates and broke her arm in an unspecified altercation with her family. She even has to clarify that this did genuinely happen to her and isn't joking. When recounting this, she evidently doesn't seem all that troubled by it anymore, being her usual upbeat self.
• Delicate and Sickly: Since birth, she had heart problems. Jeri was often hospitalized up until her sophomore year of high school, when doctors performed a surgery to remedy the situation.
• Determinator: If this girl wants something, there's nothing that anyone or anything can do to deter her. More often than not, adversity only makes her more fierce. A good contrast to Moe, who is the exact opposite of this trope.
• Didn't Think This Through: One of her defining traits, for better or for worse. Due to her desire for a daily thrill, Jeri usually dives directly into things with little thought given to the consequences that may come from it. Thankfully, being close friends with more thougtful personalities like Moe, Warble, Vitoria, and Grimaldo, she learns to consider what she says and does beforehand.
• Ditzy Genius: Jeri is knowledgeable about pop culture, open-minded and overall decently intelligent, but at the same time she's impractical, impulsive and can be lazy if she is is left without anything to do.
• Does Not Like Spam: Quite a few.
  • She's allergic to so-called regular bread, so she's forced into a gluten-free diet.
  • She doesn't like anything with dairy, especially milk and butter. She also thinks that eggs are gross.
  • Carbonated drinks like soda and ginger ale are also on the list due to how they hurt her throat.
• The Dreaded: She's a bane to anyone who prefers structure and order, given that she is so unpredictable.
  Vitoria: I can't predict her thoughts. She's going to throw everything into pandemonium without even trying!
• Dude Magnet: Downplayed, but Jeri is fairly popular with members of both sexes. Although it has very little to do with her appearance, those who do pine after her seem to be enamored with her tomboyish charm, exuberant attitude, and her extracurricular prowess, especially her position as class vice-president.
• Easily Impressed: It doesn't take a lot of effort for Jeri to be absolutely dazzled out of her wits for minor miracles. For instance, she becomes incredibly invested in Odenblom's spiritual practices, is far more impressed than intimidated by an alien invader, and is enamored by her classmate Von Whiz for his unusual character.
• Extracurricular Enthusiast: Jeri Sfortunata's extracurricular activities at Finifugal University include: Vice-President of homeroom, Litter Bin Review editor-in-chief, represents Saudi Arabia in the model World War III, secretary for the Debate club, founder of the Labeling club and the Tabletop Game club, a yellow belt in Kung Fu club, contributor to the Filmmaker's Society, and manager of the women's swim team.
• Genki Girl: She is usually a extroverted and enthusiastic girl, but sometimes tones it down out of embarrassment.
• Hidden Depths:
  • She is shown to be a pretty talented writer, even if her stories tend to be overly saccharine and repetitive.
  • Although she appears open and trusting, she typically tests potential friends by telling them a juicy tidbit of information and see if they leak it to the rest of their social circle.
  • While she struggles when it comes to practical manners, Jeri happens to have a very creative way of thinking that helps her see certain things from a fresh perspective.
  • Despite her wild and unpredictable nature, she does seem to take her few responsibilities seriously. For instance, she is admired as vice president and gives a damn good performance in Von Whiz's film.
  • She has no problem using underhanded tactics during games.
• I Just Want to Be Normal: Has always desired to have a traditional life, but fate more often than not denied her of this wish. Jeri herself realizes that maybe all the strange characters she encounters may be her new "normal".
• Impossibly Tacky Clothes: We see that Jeri's fashion sense is just as bad as her luck when Ayumu gets a look at her wardrobe. Odenblom directly compares her clothes to that of a middle school student who's trying to be hip but only ended up behind on the times. In some ways, she's technically not wrong. Among her outfits: a one-piece lizard pajama hoodie, a t-shirt with a fried egg graphic, and a [[Shoddy Knockoff Product Bootleg Bart Simpson t-shirt.
• In-Series Nickname: Moe often shortens her name to "Jer".
• Jack of All Stats: While she possesses a wide variety of talents, she is pretty much only adequate in just about all of them in comparison to her more varied housemates. She's athletic, but not to the same extent as either Grimaldo and Vitoria. She consistently scores decent grades, but Warble has her beat out in that department. And although she has some artistic merit, there are quite a few others who are more skilled.
• Jack of All Trades: She has a surprisingly extensive list of previous occupations of all calibers, and is frequently shown performing mundane part-time jobs from time to time. She knows breakdancing, mechanics, archery, computer hacking, plumbing, sculpting, is a decent chess player (although nowhere as good as Dolores), and traditional martial arts. She's also not a bad class vice president on top of all that.
• Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Downplayed. She can be selfish, impulsive, and destructively carefree at times, but she is incredibly loyal to her friends and has an optimistic outlook on life.
• The Jinx: Zigzagged. Many times, Jeri tends to draw bad luck to herself, meaning that those in her close vicinity end up with good fortune. This isn't always the case, though.
• Jive Turkey: Jeri is fond of using goofy but familiar slang terms, colloquialisms, and figures of speech, which help reinforce her genki girl persona and her playful personality in all the right ways. She also includes "dude" and "man" from time to time.
• Large Ham: Boisterous, very outgoing, and prone to making dramatic announcements about trivial details. She undoubtedly fits this trope, even getting jabbed in the shoulder by Guillermo when she makes an overly exuberant entrance into the Golpe de Tripa gym.
• The Leader: She's a natural born leader, and can certainly assume this role whenever the situation calls for it.
• Meaningful Name: Sfortunata is the Italian word for "unlucky", which fits perfectly with Jeri's notorious Born Unlucky reputation.
• The Millstone: She is a threat to many schemes, no matter how intricately plotted, because of her loose cannon tendencies. At the same time, she is a magnet to all sorts of bad luck, so simply having Jeri in close proximity can moderately increase your luck.
• Money Dumb: Zigzagged. It's not that she's dump per se, it's just that Jeri is pretty careless in general, which ends up extending to her finances. She is described as being fairly money-conscious out of necessity but still has an occasional weakness for shiny, expensive things.
• Mood-Swinger: Can go from a spirited, innocent, sweet-natured young woman to a bombastic moron in mere seconds.
• Nerves of Steel: Downplayed as this is never during a life or death situation. Jeri surprisingly takes Grimaldo's harsh remarks in stride, never once caring or even paying much attention to how one of her neighbors snipes at her. Her feelings are rarely ever hurt... in fact, she barely seems to give a damn. This usually irritates Grimaldo instead, who is annoyed to no end that he can't get a reaction out of Jeri.
• Never My Fault: She tends to blame outside circumstances when things don't go her way. Her most frequent excuse is that the universe is out to get her... technically she isn't wrong.
• New Job as the Plot Demands: Throughout the series, Jeri is never seen having the same occupation twice. She does this so that she can pay back her mountain of gambling debts. Of course, because of her exuberant and lackadaisical nature, it's no wonder why she is constantly getting fired.
• The Nicknamer: Jeri is the very reason Morgan's name is shortened to Moe and why everyone calls Gustav "von Kepler" instead. Her talent for naming things plays into a chapter in volume 4 where she discovers a new species of gibbon.
• Noodle Incident: She once mentioned lighting her hair on fire in the past. There was no further elaboration.
• No Sense of Direction: Played for Laughs. There are numerous instances, such as taking the wrong train or getting lost in her college, where Jeri misunderstands directions. She's so predictably late to events that everyone schedules meetings with her in advance to allow for her to show up on time.
• Oh, Crap!: When her professor unwittingly staples the answers sheet to the back of a quiz, Jeri copies off of it essentially word-for-word, hoping that the professor won't notice. After turning the quiz in, she realizes that some of the questions had answers that varied. What did she write? "Answers Will Vary". Yeah...
• Perky Goth: Downplayed. She enjoys emo/scene music as a Guilty Pleasure and has one goth costume consisting of bone design leggings, a black leather jacket, a choker, red eyeliner, and stiletto boots. Nevertheless, she is very exuberant, optimistically minded, and in good spirits, but can still be moody every now and then.
• Plucky Girl: She is a cheerful, confident, and endlessly charismatic young woman who is always up for a challenge.
• Proud to Be a Geek: While she doesn't really label herself as a geek, she's very open about her love of movies and games despite seeming more like a fashionable, popular type. She doesn't even have any shame in what she loves, and she firmly believes that others shouldn't tear down people for what they love, either.
• Pungeon Master: Frequently looking for any opportunity to make a pun, often of the incredibly lame variety. Prone to Laughing at Your Own Jokes. As you would come to suspect, her sense of humor leaves much to be desired.
• Red Oni, Blue Oni: Jeri is the red to Moe's blue. While she is a passionate and sentimental Genki Girl and Determinator, Moe is a reserved and casual Mellow Fellow.
• Ridiculous Procrastinator: While she doesn't typically display this trait, when it comes to her mountainous stack of homework, she's one by her own admission. This is because, as Jeri claims, she works a lot better under pressure. Whatever the situation, her grades are decent enough.
• School Is for Losers: Downplayed. While Jeri is one of the only tenants who is college educated, she expresses disappointment and regret over how much college just wasn't for her in the end. She admits that she had some good experiences though.
• Selective Obliviousness: Pretends not to realize when the landlord shaves himself bald and glues a mohawk wig to his head. This is especially surprising considering her tendency to be a loudmouth and a Large Ham.
• Sir Swears-a-Lot: Well, by the show's standards, at least. It's incredibly rare that anyone in the cast swears, but it seems that Jeri has the least restraint when it comes to uttering profanities.
  Jeri: So today was kind of shitty... what else is new?
• Skewed Priorities: To the consternation of Moe, Reagan, and Dana, Jeri tends to make a big deal out of the wrong things, so much so that it has escalated into becoming a Running Gag.
• Sleepy Head: Thanks to multiple stressful jobs and extracurricular hobbies, Jeri often completely exhausts herself. As such, it's not uncommon for her to sometimes yawn or doze off back at the apartments.
• So Proud of You: Although her puns are rarely well-received, she got incredibly excited when some of her housemates started unknowingly embracing her style of humor with puns of their own.
• Stock Animal Name: Subverted. She used to have a pet dog named "Rugburn".
• Street Smart: Although her academic prowess is rather shaky, Jeri often proves herself to be quite intelligent when it comes to charming her way out of dire straits, trusting her gut instinct, and the ability to quickly improvise on the fly.
• The Tease: Jeri is a self-proclaimed pro at making people flustered. Sometimes unintentionally, sometimes intentionally, but she's definitely this. Most notably is the dynamic between Jeri and her Best Friend Moe, which is half part supportive and the other half made up of the two goofing off and ribbing each other.
• Tomboy with a Girly Streak: She is loud, exuberant, competitive, and fond of lame jokes, but is also emotional, sentimental, and a bit of a romanticist. Her fashion sense swings between tank tops and sweaters to skirts and shirts with more girly graphic designs.
• Trademark Favorite Food: Gyoza and kung pao chicken.
• Trash of the Titans: A Running Gag is that her apartment is always a mess, and is always the first thing people notice when they walk in. There's a pile of clothes stacked in her closet that she dubs "Mount Laundry". If the scattered dishes all over her desk are any indication, it would seem that she also has a habit of leaving plates in her room after eating. This is somewhat ironic considering this is Jeri and not Moe.
• Triple Shifter: Jeri rarely has a consistent sleep schedule due to having to do her college studies, participate in extracurricular activities, manage all of her duties as vice president, and work multiple part-time jobs to support herself financially.
• Understatement: Given how she is both the Weirdness Magnet and Born Unlucky, she isn't nearly as surprised by abnormal situations as everyone else. As a result, she tends to downplay a lot of things.
• Unwitting Instigator of Doom: A Running Gag is how she unintentionally causes trouble for other people.
• Useless Accessory: She has a variety of bizarre keychains attached to her backpack that have little to no practical use. This includes a whale, a sponge, a glazed cruller, Mcdonald's french fries, a glow in the dark heart, a Red Cross CPR kit, and a functioning miniature trumpet.
• Vitriolic Best Friends: One-sided example with Reagan. While she does consider Reagan to be one of her closest friends, she regularly takes jabs at her and doesn't really appear to think of her too highly. Whether or not Reagan knows this is uncertain.
• Weight Woe: Not as prominent later in the series, but she's apparently somewhat sensitive about her weight, even going on numerous diets as a weight-loss measure.
• Wild Card: Jeri is considered an unpredictable force of nature who never thinks anything through.
• The Workaholic: Aside from attending senior year at the local university, she is constantly taking up part-time jobs and keeps busy on a near-constant basis. Later revealed that she doesn't relax because she isn't really sure how to, but her close friend Moe helps her unwind more often.

• Abnormal Limb Rotation Range: He proudly shows off his double-jointed left arm to Grimaldo.
• Achilles' Heel: It turns out that Moe struggles to find simple solutions to questions and will often look for complexities where there aren't any. Basically, he can't figure out stupid things.
• Actually Pretty Funny: Their are a couple of points where even Moe can't help but laugh heartily at the absurdity of the situation.
• Affectionate Nickname: Moe.
• Aimlessly Seeking Happiness: It eventually becomes clear that this is Moe's primary motivation and the reason why he's secretly depressed: he has no idea what his direction in life is, compounded even further by everyone around him pursuing their ambitions. Moe just went on indulging in idle pleasures until he ended up alienating others because of progressively more selfish acts of hedonism.
• Animal Motifs: He has an affinity for penguins, even owning a stuffed penguin plush in his apartment.
• The Anti-Nihilist: Moe eventually grows into this. He's initially uncomfortable with the notion that there isn't any inherent meaning to life, but tries to find a purpose for himself or simply finding a way to enjoy himself however he can. Through it all, he deliberately avoids doing anything that would hurt anyone, and even starts to make an effort to help others through their struggles.
• Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: During his youth as a delinquent, the list of his crimes include shoplifting, reading pornography, vandalism, and accidentally shooting a bottle rocket into a neighbor's window.
• Audience Surrogate: As an apathetic loner, he fits right in with some of the target audience. He tends to be the one who makes the most reasonable observations, and his dissatisfaction with his aimless lifestyle as well as efforts to overcome it is a decently relatable Character Arc.
• Bad Liar: Although he would very much like to think so, Moe is an incredibly unconvincing liar. He tends to do poorly when it comes to card games such as poker, and in the instances where he pulls of a Zero-Approval Gambit to help someone out of a precarious situation it's often remarkably obvious.
• Berserk Button: He's normally pretty level-headed and chill, but if someone quits without good reason, he quickly frowns down on them, not even hesitating to show it!
• Best Friend: Of Jeri, as they're practically family to each other. While Jeri has plenty of friends, Moe is one of the few people who knows Jeri as a whole, warts and all.
• Blind Without 'Em: His character profile in the third volume mentions that he is nearsighted to a certain extent. Later on, it's revealed that while he does own a cheap pair of glasses, Moe settled on wearing contacts.
• Brilliant, but Lazy: He is an excellent listener, well-educated, and keenly observant. Unfortunately, he is also a slothful couch potato who very rarely desires to put his energy into anything.
• Brutal Honesty: As part of his straightforward persona, he can be rather blunt when talking to others.
• Closet Geek: The worst kind! It's not really explained why this is the case, given that he is already a slacker that nobody really has a high opinion of. Nevertheless, Moe really enjoys laughably bad movies, often visits the penguin exhibit at the local aquarium, and jams out to a Skim Milk song with Odenblom's merch by himself.
• Cloudcuckoolander's Minder: Tries to keep Jeri's loftiness in moderation, to mixed results.
• Complexity Addiction: A flaw of his. He admits that "dumb stuff" is a blind spot for him and he is much better at figuring out a complex web of lies.
• Covert Pervert: Averted. He never expresses any overt sexual feelings at all during the series, and is even confirmed by the series creator to be on the asexual spectrum.
• Deadpan Snarker: Usually responds in a flat, snarky tone when bulling around with Warble.
• Deep South: He claims to have spent some time there with family and while he doesn't have any noticeable accent, there are times when he slips into it under a stressful situation.
• Desperately Looking for a Purpose in Life: This is his main Conflict. Although Moe seems to be completely content with his laid-back lifestyle, he begins to feel like he's worthless watching as the people around him (such as Jeri, Warble, and Grimaldo) pursue their dreams. Moe doesn't share this insecurity with others, only pondering about it to himself.
• Dreary Half-Lidded Eyes: His eyes are typically relaxed and half-lidded, which is only natural considering his laid-back personality.
• Dude Looks Like a Lady: A downplayed instance. He has shoulder-length, shaggy hair which, when combined with his slender build and lean face, makes him look quite feminine, more so when alongside Warble and Grimaldo. The only thing ruining the effect is his Perma-Stubble. He is also noted by Vitoria and Reagan to be fairly good-looking.
• Eskimos Aren't Real: Moe believed that narwhals were fictional until Von Kepler had to explain otherwise.
• Everyone's Baby Brother: Downplayed, since the series is a Slice of Life comedy free from major conflict. He is so beloved by the senior citizens of the apartment's neighborhood that he is referred to as "everyone's grandson". Moe says it's because he's wise.
• Gender-Blender Name: Morgan is normally a girl's name. He's a bit sensitive about being teased about it, and this is occasionally weaponized by his sister Tasha as a last resort in arguments.
• Girls Love Stuffed Animals: Gender-Inverted. He has two plushies: one is a giraffe, and the other a penguin.
• Guilty Pleasure: In terms of movies, he really loves Charlie's Angels (2000) for some reason. It's implied that it may simply be an ironic enjoyment. He was also ashamed to admit that he was a fan of Adam Sandler to a certain extent.
• Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: His dirty blonde hair matches his kindhearted nature.
• Heavy Sleeper: He is perpetually tired most times, and often refrains from eating too much food as it only makes him sleepier. To compensate for how little sleep he gets on weekdays, he typically sleeps until noon on weekends.
• The Hedonist: At the start of the series, Moe has only one ambition in life - to have a good time. His habits of living in the moment leave him feeling unfulfilled for the most part.
• Hidden Depths:
  • He used to be a a smoker, but currently holds a negative opinion on smoking and the people who do so.
  • Although you wouldn't think it, Moe is a huge animal lover. His favorite animal is the penguin.
  • White, custard-like foods such as yogurt, pudding, alfredo, ranch, mayonnaise, and cottage cheese apparently give Moe the creeps.
  • He secretly thinks that sexual innuendo is pretty funny, and he occasionally slips one into a conversation if a golden opportunity presents itself. Ironically, he is also aro-ace.
  • Despite both his level-headedness and lackadaisical behavior, Moe has a very low tolerance for quitters.
  • He tends to slip into a Southern drawl when he is surprised or spooked.
  • Moe is, despite his rationale, an absolute sucker for novelty items and seasonal products. On top of that, he is easily manipulated into buying things from advertising.
  • He has a few unusual talents: for instance, he can perform several tricks with a yo-yo, is ambidextrous, and is a surprisingly excellent freestyle dancer.
  • It appears that he is loved by the elderly, yet despised by kids. Moe claims it's because of his wisdom.
• I Just Want to Be Normal: Because of how laid-back he is, Moe's primary ambition is to live a simple, easygoing life. Unfortunately, with all of his eccentric housemates and acquaintances, this doesn't always work out for him.
• I Need a Freaking Drink: Frequently as a non-alcoholic example, due to either exasperation at dealing with his housemates or frustration at himself. This seems to be primarily why he keeps a milkshake on hand at all times.
• Limited Wardrobe: The only clothes he seems to own are a few pairs of bathrobes, a white tee-shirt, boxer shorts, and sweatpants. Lampshaded in one episode when Cacao steals it and an annoyed Moe remarked how it was his only decent outfit.
• Lovable Coward: His first instinct is to run away, opt out, or dance around the subject whenever a situation proves even slightly dangerous. The man seems to have a naturally soft heart and weak stomach. Although Moe would love nothing more than to keep his head down and keep out of trouble, that rarely works out. However, when push comes to shove, Moe always ends up coming through and taking care of business.
• Mellow Fellow: A laid back guy who goes with the flow most of the time.
• Messy Hair: It's not really a deliberate choice on his part, since he prefers to neglect getting a haircut to save money and tends to be a restless sleeper, which gives him a pretty bad case of bedhead. In old photographs from his time in high school his hair was considerably more neat.
• Must Have Caffeine: Due to his heavy workload, he always makes sure he gets his morning fix of canned coffee. In any other circumstance, such as missing a day or drinking too much, he tends to get lazy and unmotivated.
• Nice Guy: He sees no reason in acting rude or cold towards other people, which he considers to be too much of an effort to get worked up over. Sure, he's incredibly indifferent and goes to great lengths to avoid taking care of his responsibilites, but otherwise he's very laid-back, polite, and genuine with everyone he meets. In addition, even despite his faults, he's willing to at least try and make a difference to improve himself.
• Non-Action Guy: Prefers that he nor others get into any fights. Though the tenants assume this is because he's a Dirty Coward, Moe actually just doesn't enjoy conflict.
• Not So Above It All: Moe is the cast's resident Smart Guy, often reacting to everyone else's chaos with passive indifference. Even then there are plenty of occasions where he sarcastically deflates or outwits the tenants, cheats at a chess game, gets conscious about his weight, and his myriad of additional idiosyncrasies.
• Odd Friendship: With Jeri. You would be hard-pressed to think of any ways in which the two would be friends on a surface level. Jeri is enterprising, emotional, and dynamic, while Moe is reserved, level-headed, and lethargic. However, as the series go on and as their personalities are explored, it turns out that they actually share a lot in common.
• One of the Girls: His sentimental and gentle nature means he gets along well with girls. This is demonstrated by his strong bonds with Jeri, Vitoria, and Ayumu AKA: the three primary female characters.
• Opposites Attract: With Jeri; he's a low energy slacker while she's a high energy ham.
• Pajama-Clad Hero: His fashion sense consists entirely of bathrobes.
• Perma-Stubble: His face is always sporting some sort of stubble, whether it be nearly a full-on beard or just on the chin. This gives him a sloppy and laid back appearance at all times, which is fitting.
• Platonic Life-Partners: With Jeri. The two spend their free time together, occasionally rib each other like siblings, and emotionally support each other through anything, without ever implying anything else beyond this. Simply put, they are simply incredibly close friends with zero Ship Tease, which is even more impressive considering that they're the two lead characters.
• Red Oni, Blue Oni: The calm, nonchalant blue to Jeri's outgoing and feisty red.
• The Slacker: It's a cold day in hell that he's ever seen doing anything remotely resembling work. The only time he is genuinely determined to do anything is when events are preventing his slacking. That said, when he actually does put effort into something, it tends to work out rather well. According to his closest friend...
  Jeri: When Moe does something, he goes all out.
• Smoking Is Not Cool: Discussed. Moe used to smoke from time to time during his high school years, but laid off the habit before the events of the series. However, whenever cigarettes come up in conversation, Moe will simply state that you'll die young if you smoke. His childish plainness and spaced out expression adds to the humor.
• Stern Teacher: His Training from Hell sessions with Grimaldo have him barking instructions and pushing Grimaldo to his limits. Definitely unexpected coming from Moe.
• Straight Man: Out of all the the characters in the cast, he is the one who is first to point out the immaturity and stupidity of the other's schemes. This isn't saying much, because Moe still has moments averting this.
• Super Drowning Skills: It's mentioned early on in the series that he has no clue how to swim and that he would undeniably drown even the shallow end of a pool.
• Supreme Chef: Although he is a lackadaisical person, he can make pretty good food. They are simple meals, like spaghetti and chicken tacos, but it's still impressive all things considered.
• Sweet Tooth: The obvious pointer would be his affinity for milkshakes, but Moe generally enjoys a lot of food of this flavor profile.
  • Even as early as the very first episode, he can't resist helping himself to a donut hole.
  • In episode 9, Moe tells the tenants that breakfast is his favorite meal as he eats a stack of pancakes with syrup and butter.
  • In episode 31, while accompanying Jeri to a local cafe, he orders a caramel mocha with extra whipped cream.
• Team Dad: His calmer, open-minded attitude as well as his deeper voice and unkempt looks has given him the reputation of being something of a father figure whenever he isn't acting like a kid himself. His habit of walking in on the other tenants in compromising moments also gives a similar impression.
• This Is Wrong on So Many Levels!: Played for Laughs. He finds Grimaldo's basic skills so offensive against common sense that he cannot avoid helping him out, because he feels like he'd be doing a service to society by ridding the word of something so miserable.
• Totally Radical: He tends to use dated slang in a stilted manner (such as referring to himself as "your boy"), which leaves something left to be desired. It's not helped by the fact that, even on the occasions he does use modern slang, their meanings tend to change without his knowledge.
• Zero-Approval Gambit: He tends to try and protect others from either humiliation or persecution by redirecting attention towards himself. Because of this, some of his housemates' opinions of him gradually goes down the drain, while others who catch on to what he's doing appreciate him more.

• Achievements in Ignorance: Apparently the reason Warble is able to casually make astute deductions on some controversial topics is primarily because he doesn't realize that they are controversial to begin with.
• All-Loving Hero: Warble may tease his friends a lot (especially Jeri), but he doesn't actually have any malicious intent and sees the best qualities in everyone. He's also a rare example of this trope applying to a Jerkass, as he isn't particularly considerate or kind to others despite it all.
• Amateur Sleuth: Given that he works as a photographer and journalist for a local paper, Warble occasionally fancies himself as something of a private investigator a la Phillip Marlowe.
• Arch-Enemy: Played for Laughs. He is one for Grimaldo because he is very quick at revealing his underhanded tactics and thus makes him look bad. Grimaldo in turn finds Warble incredibly untrustworthy and doesn't let him indulge in his own narratives; still, they are often seen hanging out.
• Attention Whore: Downplayed. He enjoys being the center of attention, but he gives others their time in the spotlight when he feels like they've deserved it or when he thinks it will make for great entertainment.
• Batman Gambit: He's just as apt to pull them off as he is to fall for them.
• Berserk Button: Although he's The Stoic, he absolutely disdains being thrown into situations he cannot control.
• Beware the Quiet Ones: Despite his panache, he's first introduced sitting in the background, not saying a word for several minutes. In many scenes where other characters are rambling on, Warble is typically the one who keeps silent. When he does start talking, however, he demonstrates that he's been paying close attention to the conversation and deduced a lot of trivial details just based on dialogue.
• Blank White Eyes: Uses his glasses to create this effect as one of his more common expressions, including showing his indifference or uncertainty to a given situation.
• Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Seems to be operating on a different wavelength from most of the people around him, hence his preppy fashion sense and rhetoric language. The guy is nonetheless a fairly talented writer, detective, and photographer.
• Camera Fiend: He carries his camera around to most places simply for the novelty of finding "interesting" shots. Despite his unscrupulous practices and ambiguous morals, it comes as something of a surprise that Warble simply enjoys photography and nothing more.
• Cloudcuckoolander: He seems to be highly educated, speaks eloquently, and is often quite insightful but his behavior is... eccentric, to say the least. Among the many, many instances of this, perhaps the strangest is how Warble seems to entirely understand Byron's Spy Speak, even when Stofer is clueless.
• The Comically Serious: He is very straight-laced and serious-minded but, due to the nature of the series, is treated as nothing more than a joke. A running gag centers around how he says otherwise outrageous things in a monotone and expressionless manner.
  Warble: "It would be much appreciated if you performed your exorcism elsewhere..."
• Conspiracy Theorist: Takes great pleasure in hypothesizing about the unknown or coming up with fake news. It doesn't help that Warble is, well, Warble. He sees supernatural secrets and hidden conspiracies wherever he looks.
• Creepy Monotone: Warble speaks in a morose monotone, amplifying the humor whenever he chews people out with sarcasm or talks proudly of his petty achievements in such a calm voice.
• The Dandy: Sharply-dressed without a doubt, even if his suits are on the more flamboyant side. At the same time, none of these seemingly high-end outfits are actually bought from the source, instead they come from cheap thrift stores.
• Deuteragonist: Outside of the central plotline following Jeri and Moe, Warble is the most recurring character in the series. He has multiple story threads; his philosophical riddles with Odenblom, the tabloid newspaper, and the Tidji agents are all instances where he plays a major role.
• Drop-In Character: He always suddenly appears in his neighbor's apartments without any invitation.
• Entertainingly Wrong: Warble is quick to jump to conclusions or assume the worse out of any given misunderstanding. Even more so, the things he concludes on are so utterly mundane that it makes him look like an idiot. Has he come to realize that, with Moe and Jeri, nothing has a simple explanation?
• Genius Ditz: At first, one might think that Warble isn't the sharpest tool in the shed, or simply slow to grasp certain things. Whatever the case, he's surprisingly sharp when it comes to wordplay and abstract ideas. He also notices things the housemates tend to miss.
• Gentleman and a Scholar: Subverted. His outward appearances display him in a suave and sophisticated light, but he doesn't seem to be much smarter than pretty much anyone in the cast.
• The Ghost: None of his oft-mentioned friends (Dave Fisk, Alan Lundhofen, Sweet Dee, etc.) have ever appeared in the series. It's lampshaded in one scene, where Jeri and Moe ask Warble how they've never met his so-called friends before. Warble responds by saying that they aren't particularly sociable.
• Glasses Pull: Does this whenever things get particularly serious, but it immediately ruins the effect because of his astute blindness without them.
• Gonk: His perpetually straight-faced expression, blocky face, and lanky body make for a visually comedic presentation in addition to his bizarre nature.
• Hidden Depths:
  • He has an interest in Moai culture, but prefers to keep that information closer to the chest. He also understands sign language (although, for whatever reason, he can't implement it himself).
  • He was a mamber of the Boy Scouts of America, attaining the highest rank of Eagle Scout.
  • He joined a group of popular beatniks in his mid 20s while at a fraternity that he wasn't in... for a college he wasn't attending. That aside, during this time Warble learned how to play the bongos.
  • He displays a deep understanding of wordplay, social structure, political debate, stage magic, entomology, and malacology despite what his general persona would lead you to believe.
  • His interest in travel may have stemmed from his transitory childhood. Before his fifteenth birthday, the Warble family had lived in both Spokane and Yakima, Washington; Denver, Colorado (on two seperate occassions); Calgary, Alberta; Alexandria, Virginia; Murrieta, California; and Elgin, Illinois, before finally settling down in Auckland, New Zealand. This is attributed to his mother's work, as well as being sent off to live with his great uncle King and his half-siblings every now and then.
  • Occasionally he submits his photographs to competitions... and wins!
• Hipster: The meaning of "hipster" in this sense of the word is somewhat vague, but it seems to lie between enigmatic wannabe hepcat and conspiracy theorist trendhopper. His vintage fashion sense adds to the look.
• Hyper-Awareness: He's shown to be the most observant of the residents of Rock Ridge, with the extras saying that he can easily detect a lie as well. This is one of the reasons why he's a bit intimidated by Vitoria initially, as he can see through the side of hers that she deliberately tries to hide.
• Immoral Journalist: Naturally, as he works for a tabloid newspaper. Downplayed because he at least he tries to maintain some sort of journalistic integrity.
• Inadvertent Entrance Cue: Most of his interactions with the other characters start off this way.
  Moe: At least I won't have to deal with any more strange people today...
• Intrepid Reporter: Traverses around the city, observing and photographing all the goings-on. He doesn't shy away from the more lurid aspects of the culture, however. As a matter of fact, he may actually prefer it, and can become embroiled in the stories beyond his better judgment.
• Know-Nothing Know-It-All: Warble will often observe the ensuing madness and offer an insightful assumption of what's going on, but the gossip he believes is very rarely accurate or even remotely relevant.
• Last-Name Basis: Everyone calls him Warble, and only his newspaper articles or photography credits include his birth name... Kurt. Not even Moe knew what it was for several years in-universe.
• Locked Out of the Loop: A Running Gag with Warble is that, as the series goes on, the other tenants go to great lengths to avoid cluing him in on whatever the hell is going on, as they all know him to be untrustworthy. Whether or not their efforts to exclude him from the conversation are successful is hit and miss.
• Magic Versus Science: He is pretty adamant about his belief that the supernatural doesn't exist. He sometimes debates with Odenblom and Grimaldo over this, and while none of the three are able to come up with any compelling arguments, the myriad of improbable situations in the series seem to disprove Warble in a way.
• Moment Killer: Tends to interrupt tender or heartfelt scenes with his sudden intrusions.
• Mysterious Past: It's noted by the other tenants that no details of his past are known. The only thing that they know for certain is that he has worked for legitimate publications.
• Narcissist: By all means. Many times has he gotten distracted by his own intelligence, bringing conversations to a halt to admire himself, and responds with a typically monotone "I know" anytime someone praises him. Warble also tends to look down on everybody for their misfortune, only to suffer just as badly, if not worse. But he still never admits that he suffered as not to deflate his ego.
• Nightmare Face: Dramatic closeups of his somber face and Opaque Lenses are played for comedic effect.
• Nosy Neighbor: Is quick to meddle in the other tenant's business whenever he hears something that strikes his interest.
• Obfuscating Stupidity: He may present himself as a spacey, clueless man, but all it takes is a private conversation to reveal that he's actually incredibly witty and observant.
• One-Hour Work Week: During the first couple of episodes, it was never outright stated whether or not Warble had a job. It wasn't about episode 9 or so that he's established as a photojournalist for a tabloid newspaper, which seems to give him an inordinate amount of free time. The job additionally yields enough cash to pay off the bills. He often comes and goes from the apartment at odd and changing hours, maintaining a loose schedule only known to himself.
• The Peeping Tom: His inner love for eavesdropping comes out every now and then. Slithering around in vents is somehow required in his line of work too, but there is a solid chance that he might just be lying about it.
• Pet the Dog:
  • Despite his unscrupulous nature, there are at least a handful of instances where Warble actually goes out of his way to clear up a misunderstanding. It's rare, but it happens.
• The Philosopher: He has a deep interest in pondering about the aspects of a meaningful life. His musings often tend to lean more towards the surreal side, but can occasionally be quite insightful.
  Warble: "The most envious people are those who recognize life's futility but still find the joy in it."
• Photographic Memory: He has a truly incredible memory for details.
• The Pollyanna: A rare gender-inverted example. Despite facing numerous hardships over the course of the series and getting roped up in an underground spy organization, he remains genuinely optimistic and tries to look on the bright side of life.
• The Quiet One: Zigzagged. He can certainly talk for hours on end, but don't expect him to be the one to initiate a conversation.
• Real Men Wear Pink: He is described by his editor as a very effeminate person, whether that comes down to his liberal use of cologne or his french rose-colored tie.
• Rhymes on a Dime: Warble is a man of self-proclaimed sophistication fascinated with literature. In all of his articles, reciting a poem is considered by the newspaper staff to be part of his style and he may randomly recite in the most unexpected moments.
• Right for the Wrong Reasons: A Running Gag with his character is that he usually has a reliable enough gut instinct that he always knows precisely what's up, it's just that his subpar deduction skills and unhealthy habit of jumping to conclusions with little provocation confuses things. As a result, Warble gets a false idea of other people's motives and feelings.
• Sad Clown: He's a lively and extroverted individual, especially amongst the tabloid's staff, but he tends to eat dinner alone in his shower.
• Sesquipedalian Loquaciousness: His vocabulary is filled to the brim with archaic jargon that bewilders people more than it actually impresses them.
• Smarter Than You Look: While his Cloudcuckoolander tendencies and questionable job could fool one into thinking that he's a dimwit, there are multiple instances that goes to show that he is somewhat intelligent.
  • He delivers some surprisingly insightful lines throughout the series, and it's suggested that he is comfortable enough with his identity that he doesn't try to pretend to be something he isn't, which is a struggle a lot of the cast is guilty of.
  • A later chapter reveals that he has actually worked for a legitimate newspaper before.
• Sophisticated as Hell: Every once in a while. One of Warble's many skills is an abnormal talent for making profanities sound pleasant and remarkably elegant.
• Stealth Hi/Bye: Portrayed as a Running Gag. He often abruptly manifests to interrupt conversations.
• The Stoic: His face is frozen to a heavy-lidded, somewhat frowning stare at all times, even when audibly excited or gesturing wildly. It's rare that Warble ever has too much emotion in his voice either. This is particularly jarring when contrasted with the over-the-top expressions the series is recognized for.
• Stoic Spectacles: He wears glasses and is the most deadpan member of the cast.
• Super-Hearing: Downplayed and Zigzagged. He does have an above average sense of hearing, sure, but the most noticeable quirk regarding this is how he can always know when someone mentions him in conversation. Even if he is off in his own world, the quickest way to snap him back into reality is to say his name.
• Terrible Artist: He's explicitly pointed out that he has absolutely no talent when it comes to drawing, and every Moai statue he attempts to make results in an unrecognizable lump.
• Unreliable Expositor: Most of what he says about recent news is proven incorrect upon further investigation. Naturally the tenants have come to expect this from him.
• Vague Age: While most of the cast is clearly either a young adult or in their middle age, Warble's age is completely ambiguous. When asked about this, similar to most aspects of his personal life, he responds that it's classified.

Vitoria Fiore

Vitoria "Vee" Fiore

The socially anxious but friendly daughter of a wealthy restaurateur family.

• Acquired Poison Immunity: Played for Laughs. Apparently, having such a huge appetite made Vitoria immune to specific kinds of food poisoning, allowing her to eat expired foods with no ill results.
• Affectionate Nickname: Jeri sometimes shortens her name to "Tori". Given her reputation as The Nicknamer, it was inevitable that Vitoria wouldn't be spared.
• Agent Mulder: She is often the first person to suspect that something potentially supernatural could be going on when the circumstance arises. She even comments that there is a part of her that actually does hope ghosts are real.
• Ambiguously Bi: Since she's somewhat Oblivious to Love, Vitoria mostly questions her own preferences. She states that she doesn't care too much about genders, and even admits to having had experienced some romantic attraction towards both men and women alike.
• Badass Driver: She comes in clutch on multiple occasions when any of the apartment residents need to catch a quick ride, be it with her car, boat, or bus.
• Beneath the Mask: Vitoria has a myriad of personas for herself, but her real personality is critical, stubborn, insecure, and kindhearted. She has a genuine longing for friends and romance, often doing her best to understand how she can accomplish her goals. On a more serious note, she also has a strong sense of sense-loathing, which is why she always tries to put on an act.
• Beware the Nice Ones: Vitoria has a very friendly and demure disposition, but when she's angry, run for the hills. It can also be very easy to forget that she's related to a influential political family, so her doing things like gathering a treasure trove of information on the tabloid newspaper and manipulating her friends to win at a board game catch the rest of the cast off guard.
• Big Eater: Despite occasionally being on unusual diets, she loves to eat, and is seen eating more often than not. Additionally, she can eat numerous servings at a time without so much as breaking a sweat. The main reason behind how she doesn't gain weight is because of her abnormally fast metabolism, which is a trait that runs in the family. Her gluttony can land her in precocious situations, as well, such as when she visits a restaurant that serves casu marzu.
• Big Ol' Eyebrows: She has thicker eyebrows that everyone else in the cast, which she's a little self-conscious of. This seems to be a trait that runs in the family as Gemella also fits into this trope.
• Big Sister Mentor: She may or may not be the older of the twins, but she does dispense sage advice and makes impressive progress instructing Gemella on femininity. Of course, that falls apart soon after, but it worked for a while.
• Birds of a Feather: For all the grief she gives Grimaldo for his self-loathing, she has an unhealthy view on romance. She thinks that for someone to love you, it's best to play an act.
• Break Them by Talking: She'll stoop down to appeal to their friends' sympathy in order to win something as insignificant as a board game. When she pulls this off against Jeri, Moe is aghast at how merciless she is and rhetorically asks Vee if nothing is sacred.
• But Not Too Foreign: She's entirely Italian, but has lived her whole life in Canada.
• Character Tics:
  • She has to bizarre ability to unhinge her jaw remarkably wide. It's typically Played for Laughs during certain scenes that cause Vitoria to react with Stunned Silence.
  • She is known to rapidly jitter her eyes around when she's flustered or stressed.
• Cheaters Never Prosper: If there is a competition or game in her midst, she'll usually cheat to win only for someone to catch her red-handed. This is to such a degree that Warble knew that she would cheat and rigged the game against Vee by arranging the cards in a manner that would prevent her from earning any bonuses. Thankfully, Vitoria largely cheats for inconsequential stakes and nothing remotely serious.
• Cloudcuckoolander: Not on a Warble level, but between her shyness and her strong sense of imagination, Vitoria can sometimes say some rather... peculiar statements.
• Control Freak: Her over-attention to detail, general trust issues, and her insatiable desire to know everything about any situation lead her to be insistent on her method of things after a while.
• Cordon Bleugh Chef: Vitoria rarely ever enjoys following recipes, preferring to add her own unique personal touch to every dish she tries to make. Her food is usually bizarre as a result. For instance, peanut butter and hazelnut chocolate lasagna.
• Cute Bookworm: She reads whenever she has free time.
• The Cynic: Holds the belief that she can never truly be loved for her authentic self.
• Death Glare: Most people make it a priority not to provoke Vitoria because a combination of sharp Tsurime Eyes and intimidating demeanor gives her this expression by default. She is very self-conscious about this.
• Desperately Craves Affection: Vitoria wishes she can spend more time with her family, wants friends, and is increasingly envious of others' romantic conquests. She usually keeps her feelings to herself and copes with them in peculiar ways.
• Don't You Dare Pity Me!: Played for Laughs. When she joins in on Jeri and Grimaldo's cooking competition, she made it abundantly clear she didn't want them to go easy on her, despite admitting that she's not that good of a chef.
• Dramatic Stutter: She has a tendency to start stuttering when she is fired up.
• Drives Like Crazy: Although Vitoria is the only tenant with a driver's license, she is nevertheless the absolute queen of reckless driving. Her car (which, we should clarify, belongs to her sister) is a force to be reckoned with, and far more beat up than it has the right to be. It's uncertain how she passed her driver's test in the first place. On the plus side, she is usually driven around by Mr. Pelagatti due to Vitoria's suspension of her license later on in the series finally putting an end to her tyranny.
• Emotion Suppression: Vitoria has a habit to bottle up her feelings, primarily because she thinks picking sides corrodes your social status... for whatever reason. She uses unusual methods to cope with her feelings, like studying sutras, eating sour, foreign candy, and listening to all kinds of "comforting" sounds. Because of this insecurity, she puts on a perfect facade around others to hide her fear of rejection. She also makes a conscious effort to keep people at arm's length, despite her repressed desire to develop a deeper connection with someone. Since this is such a delicate balancing act, she eventually breaks.
• Extreme Doormat: Downplayed. Although she's capable and authoritative in a professional circumstance, she's easily walked over in her personal life. It's revealed that her family is very non-confrontational. Their methods of problem solving is to keep everything bottled up and subtly hint at what's bothering them.
• Fangirl:
  • She likes to hear music from local musicians, specifically hard rock bands. Her personal favorite bands are the jazz grunge garage-based Masters of the Flying Guillotine and the Swedish shoegaze duo Skim Milk.
  • For Disney, as well. She goes on a rant at one point saying that romantic confessions and marriage proposals should never be done at Disneyland because it distracts from the joy of being at the theme park.
• Fashionable Asymmetry: She has a piercing on her right eyebrow, but not on her left one.
• Feminine Women Can Cook: Subverted. While she seems like a model housewife, her attempts at homemade cooking are truly atrocious. The reason behind this is left quite vague, but it's been shown that she rarely follows recipes. There was even an episode where a taste of her food sent some of the characters into an instant state of shock.
• Filching Food for Fun: Has been known to pillage and plunder other people's food from time to time.
• Foreign-Language Tirade: She starts frantically ranting in Italian when she's angry.
  Vitoria: "Eh? Casu marzu? Perché cazzo c'è casu marzu qui? Non è illegale?" (in English) "What? Casu marzu? Why the fuck is casu marzu here? Isn't that illegal?"
• Four-Temperament Ensemble: Melancholic. She's detail-oriented and studious, the most down-to-earth and sensible of the women, and is rules and logic-oriented.
• The Gambler: Usually enjoys running bets and has hidden depths as a card sharp.
• Gamer Chick: She once mentions that she got stuck waiting in line for a new special edition PlayStation game. Later on, Moe decides to play a game on the PlayStation after unsuccessfully trying to wake her up, only for the console's startup sound to instantly get Vitoria out of bed, asking Moe if she can join in.
• Gentle Giant: She is abnormally tall, which can make her seem intimidating. In truth she's a real sweetheart.
• Has a Type: Despite being a hardcore romantic, she admits that she is rather picky when it comes to her tastes in men. By her own admission, she seems to have a major thing for effeminate guys. Unfortunately for her, most of them don't like her back... because they like men.
• Height Angst: Surprisingly subverted. While she is incredibly self-conscious about her appearance, Vitoria doesn't express any disdain towards her tall height.
• Heroic BSoD: She suffers a nervous breakdown as she starts to consider the possibility that she may never overcome her crippling social anxiety.
• Heroic Self-Deprecation: Despite being regarded as a decent person as well as being fairly skilled in everything she's tried (excluding cooking), she constantly sells herself short and thinks she isn't anything special, something she acknowledged at one point when asked if she liker herself and her response was a hesitant shrug.
• Hidden Depths:
  • Vitoria is very detail-oriented and meticulous, as well as possessing a tremendous memory.
  • She seems to have a keen passion for marine life and as such enjoys taking trips to aquariums.
  • Surprisingly, it is shown that she is an avid fan of thriller and horror books. It makes some sense considering she tries using the genre to help encourage her to face her own personal fears.
• Human Hammer-Throw: She's admitted to wanting to do this to short people like Jeri or Landlord.
• I Just Want to Be Loved: She has the strong desire to fall in love with somebody else and experience her very first kiss, but doesn't have much romantic knowledge.
• Insistent Terminology: She has her terms and often sticks to them, even when they're odd. For example, referring to the apartment house as Le Belafonte, always calling beers "cold ones" or sandals "loafs", and calling the internet "the world wide web".
• Interclass Friendship: Any friendship she has with the other apartment residents is this by default since she's the only wealthy and privileged person among a group of struggling working-class young adults.
• Lethal Chef: Subverted and Played for Laughs. Her cooking is incredibly mediocre as opposed to being downright awful.
• Light Feminine and Dark Feminine: The ladylike and well-mannered Light Feminine to Jeri's energetic Dark Feminine, but this tends to get zigzagged depending on the moment.
• Looking for Love in All the Wrong Places: Her taste in men is arguably very confusing. She may be one of the handful of beings in the universe who's ideal suitor is an idle good-for-nothing. Though, in her defense, he does have a Hidden Heart of Gold underneath it all.
• Never Gets Fat: She consumes at least 10 plates of food for each meal alone, so it comes as surprise that she is still relatively slender and attractive. Apparently, according to Pelagatti, the family just happens to have remarkably fast metabolisms.
• Not So Above It All: As kind and responsible as Vitoria is, even she can't resist using Von Kepler's Embarrassing Nickname when she finally meets him.
• One Head Taller: She's roughly a head taller than Jeri.
• Parental Neglect: Vitoria is a Lonely Rich Kid and she rarely speaks about her parents, mainly because she never really got to know them. The family servants, including Mr. Pelagatti, looked after her, but even despite that they never displayed that much affection. In addition, they neglected to give her The Talk, and as a result, Vitoria has very little knowledge about sex.
• Rich in Dollars, Poor in Sense: She's so used to her luxurious accommodations that she doesn't realize that her lower-class housemates don't have the same wealth at their expense. Her naivete is played off in an endearing way.
• Shipper on Deck: This comes as a result of Vitoria being fascinated by romance as a whole, leading her to entertain a lot of potential romantic items. Downplayed as this isn't relegated to any particular pairing.
• Shrinking Violet: One of her more prominent characteristics. In a subversion, however, Vitoria actually has very little trouble interacting with complete strangers. Since she wears so many social masks to hide her vulnerabilities, it's naturally much more difficult to interact with people who personally know her.
• Spoiled Sweet: Vitoria's curious enthusiasm about the more mundane aspects of life directly contrasts with her superficial knowledge about them.
• Statuesque Stunner: In contrast to everyone else in the series, Vitoria stands tall at 167 cm, which is equivalent to 5'6. She's also one of the more sweet, demure, and refined characters.
• Stepford Smiler: Vitoria is fully aware of how damaged and unhealthy her childhood was like, but she covers it up by faking her happiness. She also partially feels like she has no right to complain about it due to how wealthy her upbringing has been.
• Stern Teacher: Her own parental figures and tutors were the same way, and as such she is shown to employ similar methods in her efforts to coach Grimaldo. However, she does have his best interests at heart and makes sure to reward him whenever his hard work pays off.
• Strange Minds Think Alike: Vitoria gets along surprisingly well with Warble because they both tend to have their head in the clouds.
• Trademark Favorite Food: Spicy foods, particularly curry.
• Technician vs. Performer: She's the Performer to Jeri's Technician. While Jeri is a meticulous planner, Vitoria is leagues better at on-the-spot improvisation.
• Unaffected by Spice: She loves spicy food, such as curry and Thai cuisine. As a matter of fact, she even says that spice calms down her nerves.
• * Unsympathetic Comedy Protagonist: Later in the series, much of the comedy around her involves showing off her bad side, whether accidentally or not, and then getting chewed out by the other tenants.
• With Friends Like These...: She can go from considering Jeri to be a close friend to being a blight on her existence and then back again without hesitation.
• Women Prefer Strong Men: In a sense, Vitoria's ideal romantic interest is a respectable and gentlemanly Knight in Shining Armor, one who will come to her rescue in times of need. At the same time, she is very attracted to men with sharp features and gushes about how proactive and assertive they can be. Oh, and let's not forget that she likes them... rough.

• Achievements in Ignorance:
  • It seems that the reason why he's able to make very astute observations on topics of contention is because he doesn't know they're landmines in the first place.
  • He invents a few deadly wrestling techniques without making an active effort to do so.
• Activist-Fundamentalist Antics: He is a devout Catholic, and constantly feels that it his holy duty to force his religion onto the other tenants. This only leads to his words being turned against him. But because he's so determined, it is brought up again and again.
• Aggressive Submissive: Grimaldo is a stubborn and industrious guy who can be very harsh when his buttons are pushed, but he also happens to be passive and submissive when other people take the initiative. It's also implied that he has some internalized masochistic tendencies, which leaves his friends worried that he'll end up in an abusive relationship.
• Alliterative Name: Guillermo Grimaldo.
• Always Someone Better: Grimaldo perpetually falls short of being the best in any particular field, despite his best efforts. In some moments it's Played for Drama, but in others its Played for Laughs. One instance of the latter had the tenants playing in a competitive board game and, instead of even trying to beat the others, he helped support Jeri and Warble.
• And Then What?: He admits to working incredibly hard to achieve his Goal in Life of becoming a professional luchador wrestler. Once he finally achieves this, Grimaldo can't help but feel disillusioned, uncertain of what to do now that he's succeeded. This is because he had such a narrow tunnel vision that he neglected pretty much every other aspect of his life up until this point. He has a Downplayed Heroic BSoD from this realization.
• Angrish: He tends to incoherently grumble under his breath when frustrated of anxious.
• Anonymous Benefactor: Grimaldo often helps out the other tenants from behind the scenes. This is primarily because he doesn't want to be labeled a busybody that pries into other people's business simply because he cares for their wellbeing.
• Athletically Challenged: Zigzagged and downplayed. While he is a decent enough wrestler and is physically strong, he seems to struggle otherwise. Among other things, he can't pass a volleyball and somehow spikes it behind him when attempting to serve, has trouble swimming, and has little to no body flexibility.
• Badasses Wear Bandanas: He's sometimes seen wearing one while training to become a luchador wrestler.
• Belief Makes You Stupid: Downplayed. He is the most religious member of the main cast, and is sometimes depicted to be one of the more gullible as evident by his tendency to fall for empty praise.
• Berserk Button: Calling him lazy can get him riled up, which makes sense considering how much of a hard worker he is. Pushing his buttons is not something that he blows out of proportion too often, though.
• Beware the Nice Ones: Insult him, he brushes it off. Insult something — or someone — he cares about, and you're bound to face his wrath.
• Black-and-White Morality: He has a difficult time understanding or examining moral and ethical nuance, classifying people by whether they are good or bad with very little in-between. Nevertheless, he'll defend someone he doesn't entirely agree with morally if he believes they're being treated unfairly.
• Broken Ace: On the outside, it's easy to respect his determined dedication to athletics, but upon further inspection he is hilariously incompetent at just about any other skill. Whenever he's thrust into complicated situations, he usually settles on winging it while maintaining calm and composed. Although he maintains his hopeful delusions throughout his many losses, deep down Grimaldo buries a lot of internalized insecurity about his abilities.
• Bruiser with a Soft Center: He's a motormouth and a Determinator who tends to be too straightforward for his own good. Nevertheless, he's a very reliable person and has his sweet side.
• Brutal Honesty: One of his more glaring flaws is his bad habit of putting his foot in his mouth. Zigzagged since he has to issue telling things exactly as they are, but this switches back and forth between deliberate Tough Love and Innocently Insensitive.
• Cannot Tell a Joke: He's legendarily terrible at it, to the point that nobody realizes that it was supposed to be an attempt at humor.
• Caring Gardener: He's a very caring person who enjoys growing plants, apparently even having his own vegetable garden when he still lived with his family. Eventually it's explained that his father is a florist.
• Character Development: In his earlier appearances he still embodies a lot of his same personality traits, but is noticeably a lot more Hot-Blooded and boisterous. By the end of season 1, all of the misfortune he faces with the other tenants seems to humble him. From season 2 forward, he can very easily swing back and forth from being reserved and gloomy to impassioned and unafraid to say what's on his mind.
• Chick Magnet: Despite being seen by the other tenants as a stuck-up pessimist, Grimaldo has had four girls swooning for him over the course of the show. He wasn't aware of two of them, however, and only reciprocated the affections of one. On top of that, he once mentions that he had his first kiss when he was only 7 years old, had sex twice in high school and gets hit on by people of both sexes every now and then. Justified once you consider his athletic physique and (ahem)... knowledge. Or just the fact that most of the girls who've crushed on him aspired to "improve" him in one way or another.
• The Cobbler's Children Have No Shoes: He is a lot better at restoring other people's faith in humanity than his own.
• Comeback Tomorrow: Subverted, as Grimaldo is so fixated with having the final word that he keeps a pocket journal dedicated to brainstorming witty comebacks, which he will whip out at opportune times to completely wipe the floor against his opponent. Warble even admits how hilarious this is.
• Covert Pervert: He sometimes has shades of this trope:
  • While he's involved in very few romantic escapades of his own during the series, he is always very aware of everyone else's. For example, when Dana and Chris got together, Grimaldo appeared to be one of the few people unfazed by the situation and understood what was going on.
  • Justified since he has done on record to say that he had a just-good-enough love life in high school, complete with losing his v-card.
  • Grimaldo typically seems to be the first person to pick up on innuendo or jump to a sexual conclusion. For example, when he heard a ruckus in the apartment directly above him, his first assumption was that a couple was in the middle of having sex. Whenever he hears a sexual joke, intentional or not, his typical reaction is to stay silent, hold back a snicker and glare around to see if anyone else picked up on it too.
  • Ironically, whenever he makes innuendo himself, it's rarely on purpose. He's not always aware of what he says, after all. By Season 3, however, this becomes more of a Zig-Zagging Trope, as sometimes it is very clear that Grimaldo is in on it, while other times he doesn't realize until minutes later.
  • He is heavily implied to have a handful of kinks, all of which he is deeply in denial of. This seems to include femdom, hypnosis, pampering, and thigh highs. It was also implied that he was into the idea of being watched by a voyeur. And although he has made a couple of homophobic comments, even he has to admit that a man with black hair, eyeliner, and painted nails is attractive.
  • He seems to have a detailed knowledge of crossdressing culture, books called Claimed by Your Lips and The Girl Outside of Dreams: Book 2 — Lovely Gape are seen in his apartment in one episode, and there's another where he recognizes the name of a porn star. None of these are ever explained.
• Creepy Good: Although his social skills are up to snuff, his lack of a filter and his skewed, gloomy outlook on life results in him sometimes coming off as creepy, despite his decent intentions.
• Crisis of Faith: Spends a majority of the series questioning what he believes in, and all the nuanced emotions and varying responses that come as a result.
• Culturally Religious: Played With. Grimaldo becomes this after many chapters of Character Development. Although he was not raised religious in any way outside of attending Mass during the holidays. However, he would begin attending church more often in his teens following the birth of his younger brother Dante. Over the course of the series, Grimaldo begins having his own questions and doubts regarding his faith and is said to struggle between Evangelicalism or Catholicism, or maybe not even believing at all. By the end of the series, Grimaldo feels comfortable as an agnostic athiest, one who remains a believer a spirituality and open to doing some soul searching once he sorts things out with himself.
• Curtains Match the Windows: Brown hair and brown eyes.
• The Cynic: Grimaldo rarely believes anything good is going to happen and usually comes to morbid conclusions. He makes an effort to grow out of it around the half way point in the series, though his latent pessimism still remains an aspect of his character.
• Determinator: Whatever Grimaldo sets his mind to, he will absolutely not relent. In fact, adversity only makes him more amped up. The best way to trick him into doing something is to flat out tell him not to.
• Determined Defeatist: Goes on lengthy monologues about, even despite his constant losses, he will keep returning to the ring. It's one of his few redeeming and enduring aspects to his character early on.
• Devil's Advocate: Ironic title aside, Grimaldo has stated on multiple occasions that he dislikes when everyone agrees on a topic and don't say anything besides their agreement, and thus he always takes an opposing position if need be simply to have a compelling conversation.
• Does Not Know His Own Strength: On occassion, he'll end up hurting someone when he actually means to help them out.
• Dreadful Musician: The other tenants do not react well to his spontaneous ukulele concert, and it's mentioned later on that even his humming is bad, since he can only hit one note.
• Dude, Where's My Respect?: For all of his hard efforts, he's constantly poked fun of behind his back and thought of as a self-righteous tryhard. It's also heavily implied that he wants some sort of external validaition for his work, given that he watches motivational speakers and reads self-growth books on his spare time.
• Early-Bird Cameo: The very first scene of the Animated Adaptation is a seemingly unrelated vignette that features two men practicing an intense round of baseball. The catcher returns later in the story as none other than Guillermo Grimaldo. What's even more impressive, he plays a major role going forward.
• Endearingly Dorky: Grimaldo is usually a critical and gloomy person, but he still can get easily excited and be somewhat awkward and dorky.
• Exhausted Eye Bags: Grimaldo suffers from chronic sleep deprivation due to working long nights, so he has a perpetual case of dark, slightly baggy under-eye circles. This gives him a glare that tends to intimidate people.
• Failure Hero: He is cursed with a perpetual losing streak as he rarely succeeds in most of his efforts.
• Fatal Flaw: Downplayed but naivete. Grimaldo's black-and-white sense of morality is also consistently portrayed as detrimental. Any negative feelings he may have towards someone can be negated by pandering to his craving for external support, something that people sometimes exploit.
• Fictional Fan, Real Celebrity: He has repeatedly stated himself to be a fan of numerous real-life celebs, even going out on a limb to call them "classy". He is very defensive if someone were to tarnish their good name, even if most of the time they make a valid point.
• For Great Justice: Grimaldo is all about promoting justice and morality, tends to classify people by whether they are good or bad, and was planning on attending law school before he settled on athletics.
• Four-Philosophy Ensemble:
  • The realist. He is a bit of a downer, reasonably so given that his dreams are frequently kicked to the curb. He pretty much always suspects something will go wrong and is distrusting until given a reason. However, he's not so far gone that he can't appreciate activities he enjoys.
  • The conflicted fits, as well. He's obsessed with justice and tries to be as mature as possible, but this often contrasts with his gullible nature and his hidden perverted streak.
• The Gadfly: Not generally, but progressively becomes one towards Moe as they become closer as friends.
• Given Name Reveal: His given name, Guillermo, isn't revealed until chapter 87, and even then most people are still on a Last-Name Basis with him.
• Graceful Loser: Grimaldo is a good sport, although it probably helps that he isn't very competitive in general.
• Green-Eyed Monster: Implied and possibly Subverted. He has a tendency to point and laugh at guys who get rejected. Seeing as he doesn't have a girlfriend, Moe certainly believes this trope is in full effect. Grimaldo states that his reasoning is different: he claims that any guy should prioritize their romantic partner above all else. However, Grimaldo follows this up by saying that love is nothing but pain and misery.
• Hard Work Hardly Works: Averted or subverted depending on the situation. In Grimaldo's own estimation, he has zero natural talent, and the only way he can achieve his goal of joining professional wrestling is through constant effort. It's been shown that he's below average when it comes to a decent chunk of mundane activities, including ones that anyone could do without any sort of training.
• Has a Type:
  • Physically, he is into actresses Winona Ryder and Erica Srednicki and an unknown woman modeling for the front of a shampoo bottle.
  • Personality-wise, he claims that he wants a partner who makes him laugh. Later on in the series, he also says that he likes smart and studious people who aren't afraid to bend a couple of rules to do the right thing.
• Heavy Sleeper: To compensate for how little sleep he gets on weekdays, he completely shuts down on weekends. He habitually sleeps in until noon on said days, and often needs to be reminded that it isn't morning by the other tenants. Also, don't get him near comfortable recliners or fireplaces, or else he'll doze off.
• Hidden Depths:
  • In spite of being Giftedly Bad at a number of mundane tasks and having piss-poor hand-eye coordination, it is revealed that he is quite talented at balancing, vegetable gardening, and juggling.
  • He demonstrates a wealth of knowledge when it comes to the symbology, life cycles, and medicinal uses of flowers, being that he is the son of a florist.
  • Despite being a pessimist, he has some rather idealistic ideas on love, and is a sucker for emotional hyperbole and grand romantic gestures.
  • He is a fan of hip hop music and freestyle rap and an avid reader of poetry. He doesn't watch movies very often but it seems his favorite genre is comedy, surprisingly.
  • He seems to have an interest in astrology as he regularly checks his horoscope.
  • As Moe discovers, he has a rather dark sense of humor.
  • He has a highly developed sense of smell.
• High Hopes, Zero Talent: His flighty aspirations and determination far outweigh his true abilities.
• His Own Worst Enemy: Part of Grimaldo's problem is that he has very fickle sense of self-confidence, because people rarely acknowledge the good things he does, making him doubt his actions. This is played for laughs when his compliments are considered creepy or when his genuine attempts to help others are misunderstood as condescending. He gradually works on moving past his insecurities. With that said, even when he improves on his self-esteem issues, that doesn't prevent his ego from being utterly fragile.
• Honest Advisor: He is always quite honest and truthful when anyone needs things told to them straight.
• Hypocrite: To such an extent that it may as well be considered a Running Gag.
  • There are various points where he makes disparaging comments on others for being creepy, brutally honest, politically incorrect, ungracious winners, and idealistic romantics... not realizing that he tends to resemble all of these traits himself. He even chides Vitoria for being, well, a hypocrite!
  • Makes a point to try and push his stalwart sense of justice and morals. Even then, he has a surprisingly racy imagination and a convincing liar. The few times where Grimaldo has actually denounced lying was less because of morals and more because lies are difficult to remember.
  • One time he derided Jeri and Warble for trying to abuse a delicate situation. Despite this, he had previously leveraged Moe's guilt to advance further in a board game and tried to get Angel to pay for drinks for both of them when he was going through a difficult breakup.
  • Although he fixates on wrestling and is generally athletic, he feels that people get way too serious over sports.
  • In a particularly memorable moment from episode 29, he mutters to Jeri that most people on her college campus seem superficial and disingenuous. However, throughout the episode, he always maintains normal conversation with the people he meets.
  • Despite agreeing that no one should face the threat of losing their home and that eviction is undeniably immoral, he did nothing to help out a pair of his obnoxious neighbors when they were in a similar situation.
  • He claims that he wants to cut back on certain foods that are negatively affecting his health, but never appears to be actively changing these habits.
  • His tastes are surprisingly generic for someone who uses "normie" as an insult. For instance, his favorite movie is Jaws, and his two favorite bands are ABBA and Nirvana.
  • He is definitely the romantic type, but he still thinks its comedy gold whenever somebody is turned down.
  • In one episode, he was upset when the other tenants supposedly forgot his birthday even though he never told them when it was to begin with. Later on in the same episode, he judgmentally questioned why his sister Luz enjoyed a movie, but had no reservations about saying that he enjoyed it.
• Iconic Sequel Character: In the comic, he was introduced midway through Volume 3. Eventually Grimaldo became another main character in his own right, with his story line as a luchador even said by creator Gavin Nowak to be one of his favorites in the series.
• Innocently Insensitive: Inevitable, given his habit of trudging through conversational minefields without even realizing it. Despite appearances, he's actually a very kind person by nature. However, his forthright and critical attitude often ends up getting him into trouble. This is offset by a strong sense of empathy. The juxtaposition is occasionally used for gags where his attempts at helping others end up hurting them instead, like decking Jeri in the gut to cheer her up.
• Irony: In an inverse of his hypocrisy, Grimaldo believes that there is no such thing as a truly selfless act. Keep in mind, Grimaldo has done many a selfless act throughout the series, some of which are Secretly Selfish, sure, but there are still moments where he is genuinely altruistic.
• It's All About Me: Grimaldo's naive sense of morality causes him to rarely consider what other people are going through, since he exclusively believes that a lack of moral decency instantly makes you a terrible person.
• Kindness Button: How do you get Grimaldo to warm up to you? Simple: just butter him up.
• The Klutz: His motor control is noticeably dull compared to hid peers, although this seems to come less from his own ineptitude and more from extraordinarily poor flexibility. For instance, he claims to sink in water regardless of circumstance, and he's almost completely incapable of bending his torso.
• Lack of Empathy:
  • Towards playboys, since he believes that they give men a bad reputation.
  • Towards guys who get rejected. In fact, he thinks it's hilarious.
  Grimaldo: Hey, listen to this. Some guy asked a girl out completely in public, and she shut him down so hard! I wish I could've taken a picture of his face when he got turned out, it was hilarious.
  • Towards people who are rewarded despite their lack of effort.
  Angel: Do you think there'll be participation medals?
  Grimaldo: There better not be! Whoever invented participation medals can go eat shit!
• Last-Name Basis: Everyone calls him Grimaldo, even his close friends. His first name is revealed later on: it's Guillermo. In addition, it turns out that he adopted his mother's surname, and that his paternal surname is Irribarra.
• Loony Friends Improve Your Personality: Not that Guillermo was a terrible person before meeting the tenants, but he starts out as a strict stick-in-the-mud. The longer he hangs out with his housemates, however, the more he learns how to loosen up.
• Lovable Jock: Being a decent athlete with experience in wrestling, he's more aggressive compared to the other tenants, but also happens to be one of the most genuinely kindhearted and well-intentioned.
• Made Myself Sad: Has a bad habit of accidentally making himself feel depressed.
• Masked Luchador: He practices lucha libre wrestling and has a dark green luchador mask.
• Meaningful Name: Guillermo means "resolute protector/warrior". Of course, he's definitely a strong willed person who likes to help others.
• Messy Hair: His fringe isn't a deliberate choice on his part: it's bed head that he can never seem to control. Admittedly, Grimaldo doesn't use any pomade outside of nourishing his hair with almond oil.
• Misunderstood Loner with a Heart of Gold: Most of his family and congregation are judgemental of Grimaldo for aspiring to become a wrestler, and his constant attempts to share religion with his housemates don't help his situation. The fact is, while he is still very flawed, he's way more thoughtful and hardworking than people give him credit for.
• Nervous Wreck: Downplayed. There's hardly ever a time when he isn't worrying what could go wrong in any given situation. If ever something seems out of hand, chances are he'll have an unnecessary comment or two to dish out.
• Nom de Mom: He took on his mother's surname Grimaldo, both to honor her after her death, and also because Guillermo Balmaceda proved too difficult for many Northerners to pronounce properly.
• Not So Above It All: Despite frequently playing the Straight Man to everyone else's antics, many times he ends up participating anyway.
• Omnidisciplinary Lawyer: Averted. When the topic of potential careers comes up, he mentions that law is a very broad subject and that he isn't sure what his focus of study would have been.
• Open Mouth, Insert Foot: Grimaldo has a tendency of blurting things out by accident that make the situation considerably more awkward. This bites him in the ass a lot of the time.
• Performance Anxiety: Although he wants some recognition for his efforts, Grimaldo doesn't like being the center of attention and seems to suffer from stage fright. He claims that wrestling in a ring is different because he's sharing the spotlight with somebody else.
• Plucky Comic Relief: The poor guy just has to dig himself into an even deeper grave.
• Politically Incorrect Hero: Grimaldo straddles the line between this and Innocent Bigot. He comes across as casually sexist, regularly uses "poor" as an insult, says at one point that dyslexia is just an excuse stupid people use, is afraid of appearing gay, mentions that he once volunteered at a gay conversion camp and makes racist comments about how Italians are horrible drivers or how African-Americans can't swim. Thankfully, he does get better over time.
• Pop-Cultural Osmosis Failure: He plainly admits that he is not caught up on pop culture, as he almost never goes to the movies and watches television for no longer than a few minutes. His ignorance of these things is not brought up in the series often, but when it is, it's golden.
• Red Oni, Blue Oni: Similar to much of the show's cast, he has traits that balance out when put against someone else.
  • While they are both romantics in a sense, Vitoria is often sympathetic to love-related plights. This is in contrast with Grimaldo's harsher outlook on the subject, as he tends to be rude and contemptuous instead.
  • Although Grimaldo is usually the Red to Moe's Blue, the latter is not easily duped by empty praise, unlike Grimaldo, who can excuse somebody of their misdeeds so long as they gas him up.
• Rousseau Was Right: Part of his character arc involves him realizing this. Despite his bleak outlook on life and critical opinion of religious inferiors, he realizes that most people just want to be loved and accepted, and that the things they do, no matter how twisted, are merely the result of self-hatred, anxiety, and lack of understanding for themselves or others.
• Sacrificed Basic Skill for Awesome Training: A lot of life skills like simple arithmetic and science are lost on Guillermo. The only things he really knows how to do is wrestling and jogging. Oh, and spirituality. Though, to be fair, he's very, very good at these things.
• Self-Serving Memory: Inverted when he passionately defended Vitoria when she was being accused of hiding her her true self. For Vitoria, she greatly appreciated how he stood up for her. However, in regards to Grimaldo, he was so embarrassed that he went out of his way to ignore her for a week.
• Simple-Minded Wisdom: Despite his fairly uneducated demeanor and presumed naivete, Grimaldo can be surprisingly perceptive at times. This generally happens when the others are too caught up wildly overthinking the situation, in which Grimaldo's straightforward comments help set them on the right path.
• Single Guy Seeks Most Popular Girl: Discussed. Grimaldo admits that he always ended up falling for sweet, popular girls in high school despite them being completely out of his league since the two of them were on opposite ends of the Popularity Food Chain. He never had any intention of actively pursuing any of them, though.
• Sixth Ranger: He joins the other five tenants a little after the series begins.
• Sleepyhead: He squarely falls into the earnest type, putting so much of himself into everything he does that it leaves him perpetually worn out. He is regularly seen with Exhausted Eyebags, is prone to dozing off in comfortable situations, and has a sizable collection of blankets, pillows and the like. Justified and played with considering he is also a generally light sleeper, meaning he's just as quick to wake up as he is to nod off.
• The Stoic: Zig-Zagged Trope. His default disposition is dull to emphasize his downtrodden attitude, but he is still very prone to succumbing to emotional outbursts.
• Super Drowning Skills: He will immediately sink to the bottom of deep bodies of water.
• Super Gullible: Downplayed. Although he is a straight-laced and gloomy individual, which is quite the opposite from whom this trope usually affects, Grimaldo is nonetheless quick to believe anything he hears. However, he does have some modicum of common sense, and will be skeptical if the information is particularly absurd.
• Tall Poppy Syndrome: He has a deep-rooted distrust for people who are wealthy, privileged, or otherwise perceived as popular. This is because Grimaldo believes that life is too easy for them, and that they don't have any actual merit of their own.
• Tan Lines: Grimaldo constantly sports a tan, due to the amount of time he spends outdoors between athletically training and running deliveries for his job, and it deepens during the summer.
• Testosterone Poisoning: Incredibly Downplayed, but he still shows shades of this, most clearly when he dismisses women's physical strength.
• Think Nothing of It: His typical response to words of praise is always "It's nothing". This can be attributed to a number of reasons:
  • He dislikes being the center of attention.
  • He firmly believes that receiving recognition and praise for doing a good deed complicates its integrity.
  • The actions were embarrassing to the point where he doesn't want to be associated with it.
  • He's doing a little bit of Compliment Fishing to compensate for abnormally low self-esteem.
  • He simply isn't keen on the idea of being the subject of hero worship, finding it to be both demeaning to the aided party and encouraging dependency.
  • There actually is one occasion in chapter 114 where Grimaldo's help was incredibly unnecessary and didn't end up impacting anything.
• Trademark Favorite Food: Pambazo and spicy pickles. He seems to primarily have a hankering for Spanish street food in general, whether that be churros, gazpacho, or chorizo.
• Tsundere: Many of Grimaldo's mannerisms gives him a very tsun demeanor, with his main weakness being affectionate remarks.
  • He gets caught off guard when he receives a genuine compliment, tending to simply dismiss the comment. If the compliment is reassured, then they will successfully trigger his Kindness Button. See Think Nothing of It above.
  • He displays reluctance to express affection towards anyone else as well, often having to work around it by offering an indirect compliment or, in some cases, helping them out anonymously.
• Underdogs Never Lose: A hilarious subversion of this trope. Grimaldo, while having all the determination and losing streak of an underdog, never comes out on top no matter how hard he tries. Everyone expects him to lose and he always does.
• Unsportsmanlike Gloating: While he often appears humble about ranking above others in tournaments or competitions, he privately gloats about it in the solidarity of his apartment.
• Victory by Endurance: Fits in with his typical approach as a Combat Pragmatist. His unbreakable tenacity makes him a strong competitor in endurance challenges, which definitely makes up for his athletic ineptitude.
• Wide-Eyed Idealist: Grimaldo is incorruptibly idealistic and believes that anyone can change for the better, even if it means they have to be forced to do so. His lofty aspirations and ambition balance out his occasionally gloomy attitude.
• You Were Trying Too Hard: Grimaldo usually has the most success in working towards his goals when he's more focused on something else. This has been pointed out in-universe, and naturally Grimaldo isn't too happy about it.

Others

Janine Stofer

Janine Stofer

A rookie secret agent for the espionage organization Tidji.

• Ascended Extra: She was originally a background character, but went on to become a more prominent character with a plotline as a secret agent.
• Beneath Notice: Her unremarkable personality and typical looks help her fade into the background, which is what she prefers.
• Dynamic Entry: Her first appearance? Suddenly appearing from around a corner to electrocute Grimaldo, and then fleeing the scene.
• Entertainingly Wrong: After moving into the Moritsugu apartments and repeatedly dropping in at the worst possible moment, he comes to the conclusion that Moe and Vee are substance abusers and that Jeri is a dealer of illegal goods. Funny enough, they think Warble is an "upstanding dude" and all but ignore Grimaldo's existence.
• Fake-Out Twist: After the reveal that she is feeding the government information behind Tidji's back, it's then almost immediately revealed that Mel and Byron knew this the entire time, and were secretly investigating her under the impression that they were investigating an apartment resident.
• Flat Character: All we really know about her is her spy gig and her vaguely criminal past.
• The Generic Guy: Gender-Inverted and Played for Laughs. She is an ostensibly average person.
• Hidden Depths:
  • Despite being a rookie, she's a skilled information broker, a competent strategist, and a decent locksmith.
  • Even though she mooches off of the other tenants a lot, she's otherwise pretty considerate.
• Indubitably Uninteresting Individual: Exploited by Stofer. She acknowledges herself to be a very mundane and boring individual. She has plain looks, her favorite food is Red Lobster cheddar bay biscuits, her pastimes consist mainly of reading the newspaper and playing chess, and she has a very monotonous manner of speech. This is what makes Stofer such a decent spy, since nobody even recognizes her most of the time due to how unremarkable she is.
• Informed Attractiveness: Played for Laughs. She attracts quite a few men despite her ordinary personality. Yanga more or less deduces that the reason he likes her is because she's mysterious.
• Knowledge Broker: She is a talented information broker capable of finding almost any document. In addition, although she rarely plays a major role in storylines outside of his own, Stofer always seems to be up-to-date on what each of his housemates' are currently dealing with.
• Master Forger: She was able to forge false evidence to be used as blackmail against Warble, and before her occupation as a spy she used to create and sell faux ID cards.
• The Mole: Initially, it seems that Stofer and Mel are investigating one of the apartment tenants, with Byron gathering their information and Warble serving as a back-up. However, it's revealed by episode 20 that Stofer is secretly investigating Tidji's inner workings and secrets on behalf of the government.
• Ridiculous Procrastinator: Played for Laughs. Most of the time, as opposed to actually doing any investigating, Stofer paces around pondering to herself. Stofer tries to defend herself when Byron appears by saying that she works better under pressure. Granted, she's not really in the know regarding the mission at hand, but still.
• Stealth Hi/Bye: She has a habit of making sudden appearances, which usually startles anyone in the vicinity. Then she just sort of wanders off awkwardly.

Mel Frick

Melinda "Mel" Frick

A sleepy gadgeteer agent for the espionage organization Tidji.

• Ascended Extra: She was originally a background character, but went on to become a more prominent character with a plotline as a secret agent.
• Chekhov's Gunman: She briefly appears in an early episode. Mel later reappears when Grimaldo moves into the apartment, where she tasers him and flees the scene without another word. The reveal that she and her roommates are actually undercover operatives leads to an entirely new story thread.
• Chronic Backstabbing Disorder: She can and will turn on people at the drop of a hat if it suits her needs. Her father is a politician after all.
• Delicate and Sickly: Downplayed. She has a glucose monitor patch on her left arm which seems to indicate that she is diabetic. Despite this, she's apparently healthy enough to do espionage work without any issues.
• For Science!: Her entire life philosophy is the pursuit of knowledge, and she gets excitable when the opportunity presents itself to learn something new.
• Gadgeteer Genius: Mel is responsible for the tech and mechanics involved on missions, and as such she creates numerous gadgets that help spy on the landlord. Her favorite invention is a series of experiments she calls "Mr. Thingamajig", which all tend to self-detonate.
• Mad Scientist: Averted. In contrast to one-half of her associates, she is far more level-headed. All she really does is mooch off of the other tenants and work on her gizmos.
• Meaningful Name: Her canonical surname "Frick" could be synonymous with "crap", and she is introduced via an Oh, Crap! moment where she mistakenly electrocutes Grimaldo.
• Mooching Master: She tends to steal the other tenant's belongings, sometimes for herself and other times for her next gizmo. Stofer is steadfastly against her mooching, however, both out of consideration for their housemates but also the threat of bringing unwanted attention to themselves.
• Ridiculous Procrastinator: Played for Laughs. In her and Stofer's earliest appearances, they were usually sitting in their apartment, twiddling their thumbs, and thinking about how they should pull off their mission.

Pelagatti

Mr. Namazio Pelagatti

An incredibly serious and stern accountant for the Fuori conglomorate.

• Animal Lover: Pelagatti loves animals more than anything.
• Authority in Name Only: Subverted. He values respect and moral dignity, but truthfully he's just the Fuori family accountant.
• Beneath the Mask: On the surface he seems to be a stern disciplinarian but deep down he truly does everything he can to help out Vitoria because he feels sorry for her dilemma.
• Be Yourself: Deep down, he's a true Family Man who loves the Fuori family for who they are, gluttonous appetites and all. He isn't ashamed of Vitoria's antics with her housemates, as he admits that they make him laugh. In addition, it's easy to forget that Pelagatti is the one who actually bothered to hear her problems out. He encourages Vitoria to accept what she fears will be rejected, as a part of her.
  Pelagatti: We all have a messy side, and they'll never truly go away. There's no point in rejecting it. We have to learn to better ourselves to make up for our flaws, and to live with it.
• Book Dumb: While he is very logical-minded and emotionally intelligent, Pelagatti doesn't have much academic skill, which is a major insecurity of his.
• Butt-Monkey: Downplayed. Though he projects an aura of confidence and professionalism, Pelagatti gets extremely flustered when things don't go according to plan. As a result, none of his peers are able to resist the urge to mess with him from time to time.
• Consummate Professional: Zigzagged and Played for Laughs. He tries to appear like a serious and reliable professional, and in many ways he genuinely is one. However, there are still numerous occasions where Pelagatti is Not So Above It All.
• A Dog Named "Dog": One chapter reveals that Pelagatti has a pet dog named Cane, the Italian word for... "dog". Next to nicknaming Dolores "chimp" and Landlord "old man", it demonstrates how uncreative Pelagatti is.
• Flat "What": This is usually his reaction when he witnesses a weird situation.
• Freudian Slip: When trying to act coolly with Vitoria he flat out tells her that her apartment is terrible. When he later tries to talk to other characters, his absentminded bluntness returns to predictable results.
• Good with Numbers: Justified, given that he's an accountant and is in charge of the Fuori family's finances. His ability to do complex mathematic equations in his head is essentially all that Pelagatti has going for him.
• Heroic BSoD: After mentioning that his schedule revolves mostly around his standard day job, the conversation shifts to about how he relaxes and unwinds, only to stop, ask himself what he actually does for fun, and stops talking for about a minute as he appears to have an existential crisis. He concludes that he should really find something to do for himself to take his mind off working.
• Hey, You!: Outside of Vitoria, Pelagatti never refers to anyone by their names, but rather by using a nickname. For example, he calls Dolores "chimp", Landlord "old man", and Jeri "whim".
• Hired Help as Family: While he starts out as nothing more than an accountant, as the series goes on, it's easy to interpret Namazio as a sort of surrogate father figure to Paola, Vitoria, and Giulia.
• Hot-Blooded: He tends to go all-out whenever he's fired up about something.
• Humble Hero: Subverted and Played for Laughs.
  • Whenever his ill-conceived advice proves itself to work out flawlessly, he tries to play it off modestly, but in private he actually shadow boxes to himself out of joy.
  • When he joins a cooking competition in the apartment house, he advises Jeri and Grimaldo not to take the contest too seriously. At the same time, he mentally notes that he's got it in the bag and wonders how it's possible how anybody is genuinely hoping to even meet his level of expertise.
• I Gave My Word: To keep up his act as a good role model, Pelagatti is undoubtedly a man of his word and insists that he will pay back any debt, even if it puts him in embarrassing situations.
• Inferiority Superiority Complex: He is unflinchingly arrogant and portrays himself as a respectable figure, even despite the fact that he is only an accountant. It takes a lot to break through the facade, but once you do, it's clear that Pelagatti really doesn't like the way he turned out.
• Italians Talk with Hands: Downplayed, as it isn't wildly exaggerated or lampshaded like many other examples in media. Nonetheless, he is noticeably the only character who gesticulates from time to time, typically when he's calm and relaxed.
• Last-Name Basis: Almost everyone calls him by his surname. Paola is the only exception.
• Legacy of Service: The Pelagatti family has been serving the Fuori family for generations, and Namazio follows in their footsteps rather well. This is also somewhat the reason why Namazio felt sympathy for the Fuori sisters, particularly Vitoria.
• Loss of Identity: There's a chapter where Namazio is lounging alone in his apartment after a long shift at work, considering how he can spend his spare time. He realizes that he has no hobbies, interests, or close relationships, and that his time alone is usually spent sleeping.*

Married to the Job: He's a middle aged workaholic and has a completely nonexistent love life.

• Mirror Character: To Cacao. Both of them are loud, abrasive, irritable, and somewhat arrogant, but they also both happen to be much less serious then they initially let on and are adoptive parental figures. Downplayed with the tenants, as it turns out that Pelagatti lives in an cheap apartment building himself.
• Mr. Imagination: Pelagatti has a tendency to imagine a myriad of possible scenarios for any given situation.
• Not So Above It All: Tries to maintain discipline and demands proper respect from others, but he gives into his impulses and temper from time to time.
• Parental Substitute: It's easy to interpret his relationship with Vitoria as a maternal one. He cares a lot more for her than her birth parents do, after all. His relationship with her is further explored in a flashback during volume 7, where he is left to watch after an infant Vitoria and grows to instinctively dote on her.
• The Reliable One: Probably the only grown adult in the series that can be described as "reliable". He is always willing to complete a job with no questions asked, and always has his doors open for Vitoria if she needs help.
• The Rival: A mostly one-sided friction with Cacao, mainly because of how Pelagatti views their characters to be too similar.
• Romantic Wingman: Pelagatti appoints himself to this role after finding out about Vitoria's crush on Moe, as he hopes that her winning his affection would be great for her self-confidence. Given that this is Pelagatti, a man who's never had a romantic relationship in his life, he knows just as little about love as Vitoria does.
• Sentimental Drunk: He becomes very weepy and emotional once he's had some alcohol.
• Serious Business: For a lot of things.
• Supreme Chef: Since he serves a family that has an abnormally quick metabolism, naturally Pelagatti has taught himself on how to become an excellent cook. It's one of the few pastimes outside of his work that he enjoys.
• They Call Me MISTER Tibbs!: He insists that people refer to him as Mr. Pelagatti.
• Think Nothing of It: This is Namazio's response after anyone thanks him. Humbleness is a virtue, after all.
• Undying Loyalty: Nothing will prevent him from remaining completely devoted to the Fuori family.
• Villainous Cheekbones: Despite his heavier build, his cheekbones and jawline are particularly prominent. It's downplayed in that he's really just strict and intimidating rather than malicious.

Reagan

Reagan Ortiz

A student at Lester Gormley University and a... friend of Jeri.

• Best Friend: She has been close friends with Dana for quite a long time since they met in college, but their relationship has gone sour in the past. Throughout the first season, though, they've worked on mending their friendship, and truly are friends again by the second season, although it's not nearly as tight a bond as it once was.
• Big Beautiful Woman: Reagan has a rather plump physique, especially when contrasted with Jeri and Dana, but she is nonetheless a "gorgeous" woman, in her own words. Overlaps with Big Fun as well.
• Big, Thin, Short Trio: As being heavyset, she serves as the big to Jeri's thin and Dana's short.
• Vitriolic Best Buds: With Jeri. In spite of how often they snipe and teasingly jab at each other. Like an Old Married Couple, they have been close companions all throughout college thus far. Played With in that, from the perspective of everyone else, Jeri and Reagan seem less like friends and more like business associates.
• You Owe Me: Played for Laughs. Her mutually beneficial relationship with Jeri primarily involves the two exchanging favors.

Dana

Dana Callahan

A student at Lester Gormley University and a friend of Jeri and Reagan.

• Bespectacled Cutie: Dana wears glasses and is considered easy on the eyes.
• Boyish Short Hair: Downplayed. She sports a pixie cut for a good majority of the series, but while she isn't overtly feminine, she isn't exactly what you would consider a tomboy either.
• Cross-Dressing Voices: Dana is voiced by series creator Gavin Nowak, who just uses his regular voice and makes no attempt whatsoever at sounding even remotely feminine. However, this is never drawn attention to or made the subject of a joke.
• Drunk with Power: Discussed and Played for Laughs. Dana jokingly warns herself not to let the newfound power of graduating a year before Jeri and Reagan go to her head... or, at least, not yet.

the Landlord

Richard "Rich" Swarts

The elderly owner of the flophouse.

• Cool Old Guy: He's quite affable and easygoing, wise to the ways of the world (even despite his childish longing for his youth), wears a mohawk and an eyepatch on occasion, and is an intelligent fighter.
• Delinquent Hair: A pretty strange example. In an effort to relive his youth, he shaves himself completely bald and uses an adhesive to attach a mohawk wig to his head. Subverted because Landlord himself is a down-to-earth pushover.
• Drop-In Landlord: The owner and superintendent of the apartment house where most of the cast reside. He appears every now and then simply to collect rent, though he usually isn't successful.
• Friendly Enemy: Despite being a nemesis of the apartment tenants, he and Moe can, on occasion, get along pretty well, given that the landlord isn't being an asshole.
• Glory Days: He tends to reminiscence wistfully about the great summers back in his young adult years. He constantly tries to rekindle his youth by getting drunk and partying, picking fights with his chimpanzee nemesis, or wearing a mohawk and eyepatch simply for show. It's never made clear to the other characters how much he envies them however, because all they see is a tyrannical landlord.
• Harmless Villain: Acts like, and is treated by the tenants like some sort of evil mastermind. Fitting of the show, the extent of his "evil" is collecting rent once a month, generally just antagonizing Ayumu, and being negligent of maintatence.
• Hated by All: Absolutely nobody in the main cast enjoys being around Landlord, only begrudgingly tolerating his presence at best. Jeri's friends seem to admire how lenient he is when it comes to rent being paid accordingly, but even they're rendered uncomfortable by his pathetic behavior.
• Hidden Depths: He appears to be a deeply bitter apartment manager. It turns out that he is like this due to the struggles in his personal life, including the failure of his marriage and middle age. Because of his plights, he is able to empathize enough with his tenants to grant numerous extensions to get their financial affairs in order.
• Hollywood Mid-Life Crisis: Eventually goes Totally Radical and sports a mohawk wig and eyepatch just for the hell of it, causing great amusement to his tenants.
• Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Initially he seems to be a pretty unlikable person, but he's not as bad as he seems. Even early on, he gives his tenants until the end of the week to collect their rent, despite not having any real obligation to do so. It's also clear that he has given them multiple opportunities to correct the situation, and yet they keep coming back with the same problems.
• Prematurely Bald: His hairline started receding at the age of 22.
• Sitcom Arch-Nemesis: Dolores, as both make it their duty to tidy up around the flophouse and as such try to one-up each other in the process. The two eventually form a truce, uniting over their common goal.
• Tender Tears: He's a highly sensitive person who is prone to tears when he encounters something beautiful or touching, such as a remarkable sunset.
• Unexpected Kindness: Every once in a while, he does something decent despite his reputation as the crooked landlord (i.e. donating to charities and picking up litter), which surprises the tenants. They think he must have some good in him, but it's usually either subverted or left very ambiguous.

von Kepler

Gustav Johannes Pisces von Kepler AKA "Kep"

An ever-travelling motorcyclist and independent filmmaker.

• Abnormal Ammo: Among his enormous quantity of projectiles, it seems quite a few bizarre things end up in his stash, yet Von Kepler uses them anyway. This includes bowling balls, yo-yos, spatulas, oranges, and pesticide.
• Amateur Film-Making Plot: In order to enter for a local independent film festival, Gustav struggles to find a staff to help out with his underfunded production. Numerous struggles get in his way, but he eventually finds a leading lady in Odenblom, a financial advisor in Mr. Pelagatti, and a cameraman in Mr. Warble.
• Arbitrarily Large Bank Account: Von Kepler is unemployed and has no viable source of income nor is he ever stated to be on welfare. However, he never has an issue affording expensive amenities like filmmaking equipment, bowling memberships, and a massive collection of novelties and souvenirs. It's implied that he is financially stable due to a previous marriage.
• Beware the Nice Ones: He is a very affable and optimistic individual, but you'd be ill-advised if you ever directly insult one of his films. It's in everyone's best interest that they are aware that he doesn't take criticism well.
• The Casanova: A Running Gag involves how he somehow always has a different girlfriend with every single appearance he makes in the series. As to how he manages to attract so many women, or how his relationships never seem to last longer than a month, are never answered.
• Chekhov's Gunman: There are numerous mentions to von Kepler all throughout the beginning of the series, but he appears for the first time in chapter 67.
• Collector of the Strange: A variation; he uses his nomadic lifestyle and eye for artistry as an opportunity to gather all kinds of bizarre souvenirs, most of which he offers to Jeri. He's given her everything from exotic dishes to wooden bull statues, and his seemingly neverending backpack is filled with trinkets from his travels. Most of the time, though, they have little to no actual practical use, but Jeri rarely seems to mind.
• Cool Shades: Sometimes he wears a pair of sunglasses or 3D glasses.
• Dimension Lord: It's heavily implied and joked with because of his mysterious ability to pull firearms seemingly out of thin air.
• Funny Afro: A big, red haired one. It may or may not be a wig.
• Hidden Depths:
  • Gustav is said to be very reliable, although this is rarely demonstrated. However, he qualifies for incredible credit scores on his card because of how reliably he pays his bills, which is also proven by the fact that he has a paid-off mortgage.
  • He may or may not have ADD, given how he is often forgetful or fails to pay attention to the details.
• Put on a Bus: Von Kepler tends to have long hiatuses between his appearances, which is made clear in universe considering his penchant for travelling.
• Ripped from the Headlines: His method for funding his trips mainly involves purchasing large quantities of pudding to take advantage of their company's air miles offer. This was directly inspired by a Time magazine article about a civil engineer named David Phillips. It could also be a homage to Punch-Drunk Love.
• Thousand-Yard Stare: Gustav occasionally goes into some sort of semi-catatonic state in the middle of conversations, signified by his eyes becoming black-and-white spirals and his lack of verbal response for a few moments.
• True Art Is Incomprehensible: In-universe example. Not even Von Kepler completely understands what his magnum opus Le Film Artistique is supposed to be thematically depicting. Many of his fans have deeply thought-out interpretations on the film, but Von Kepler has to admit that it has no deeper meaning.
• Walking the Earth: His passion is for travel, and he does a lot of it. The means for how he funds his trips is beyond anyone else. The cities he's visited include: Sofia, Lisbon, Darjeeling, Budapest, and Fukui.
• Wingding Eyes: He gets spiral eyes when he's zoning out.

• Beef Bandage: Yanga constantly has a black eye, and as such he occasionally uses frozen vegetable bags as a remedy. He uses a slab of raw steak at least once.
• Beginner's Luck: He gets the hang of lucha libre wrestling rather quickly.
• Dangerous Forbidden Technique: At the end of the series, Yanga masters a wrestling move vaguely called the "Bazooka Clutch" which, if executed poorly, can result in instant death.
• Early-Bird Cameo: Along with Grimaldo, Yanga appears in the opening sequence of the animated series.
• Face of a Thug: His shoulder-length hair, constant black eye, and number of stitches makes him look like a criminal or a delinquent, but he's actually a very Nice Guy all things considered.
• Game-Breaking Injury: Played for Laughs. He gets injured quite often, preventing him from participating in professional matches. Justified since Yanga apparently practices dangerous forbidden wrestling techniques.
• Gretzky Has the Ball: Most of his early appearances as a background character involved him completely misunderstanding the rules of lucha libre wrestling, usually replacing it with baseball terminology. He makes false observations so casually though that nobody else acknowledges.
  Yanga: "Three strikes and Solavanco's out!"
• Hidden Depths:
  • Lorenzo turns out to be a skilled baseball player as well in addition to his wrestling prowess.
  • Surprisingly, he has been accepted into a prestige university to study meteorology.
• Last-Name Basis: When he's first introduced, the luchadors only refer to him as Yanga. In chapter 173, his first name is revealed to be Lorenzo, and Grimaldo ponders how he's never actually known this before.
• Magic Versus Science: Yanga is a skeptic at best when it comes to the supernatural, which he tries to disprove in the name of science. Unfortunately, his logic contradicts itself. Alongside the equally hypocritical Grimaldo, the two really are Birds of a Feather.
• Satellite Character: To Grimaldo. Many of his appearances feature Grimaldo in the forefront.
• Wrestler in All of Us: Lampshaded. After pulling off a variety of wrestling techniques in his everyday life, Yanga was encouraged to pursue it as a career opportunity.

• Been There, Shaped History: It's implied that Byron's service at Tidji had gotten him involved in numerous mayoral elections. * Bunny-Ears Lawyer: He might not be the sharpest or the most quick-witted, but he seems to be a pretty decent actor and handyman.
• Color Motif: Wears mostly neutral colors, mostly grey, due to his occupation involving staying undercover.
• Constantly Changing Name: He claims his real name is Byron, but as the series goes on he continues to alter his identity for the sake of keeping a low profile.
• Handyman: His official job and position at the Moritsugu apartment.
• Hidden Depths:
  • He somehow has access to documents and methods that not even the Tidji archives have.
  • He once dreamed of being an actor. While his ambitions never really went anywhere professionally, he can still put on a decent performance. Later on in the series, Byron joins as an actor in Von Whiz's film production.
• Master Actor: He is very good at portraying a variety of characters depending on the situation at hand. In fact, it's actually a personal passion of his to star in film or musical theater.
• Noodle Incident: Tends to do this, given that he is a secret agent. Speaking cryptically is his thing.
• Screw the Rules, I Have Connections!: He's not above using his various contacts for favors should the need arise.
• Sleepyhead: If the heavy bags under his eyes don't already give it away, Byron isn't particularly well-rested. It's also implied that he may be narcoleptic.
• Spy Speak: Played for Laughs. Byron usually tries to communicate details of the mission through a bizarre Trust Password or additional analogies, although Stofer genuinely doesn't understand them. All of his efforts to question Byron are ignored.
• Unlimited Wardrobe: He always has a new outfit for each appearance he makes.
