Grave Dreams is a roleplay event hosted by the mun of Inkywellington on Discord.

[Grave Dreams] contains examples of:

  • Ascended Extra: Several examples.
    • Ludio. He was the one who was seen briefly abducting Lucida at the start, and he's returned as a dreamer.
    • Cal. Word of God says he was originally just going to show up as a brief quest to get the dreamers to find his mom, but when that didn't happen immediately and the characters started asking him about his life, he quickly became a full fledged character. Thanatos developing a parent-child relationship with him has made him fairly integral to the plot as well.
    • Blookybloo and Mettaton from one dream day of Gravestone campaign returned as major characters for a dreamer campaign event.
  • Astral Projection: Lucida can do this. it's how she talks to the woken dreamers after Ribby comes back with the spyglass.
  • Big Guy, Little Guy: Lux and Pride have become this kind of duo.
  • Buried Alive: The people who went into the mausoleum as discovered by Cosmic. Lux is a notable example, as she ate her way out.
  • The Bus Came Back: Four major examples.
    • The first is Lucida. She was rarely seen after the Gravestone event, and she appeared in the first event day of Grave Dreams, and has been a major reoccurring character since.
    • The second is the dreamworld, which has also returned to be a major plot point. The dream creatures are there almost all the time, and the fallen dreamers spend a lot of time there to make plans with them.
    • The third had Blookybloo and Mettaton from the second dream day appeared as a major plot on a campaign day.
    • Mr. Knack. He was seen briefly in one of the dream days, and now he's come back as a major npc in the dream world. There was a good reason for that.
  • Cuddle Bug: Pretty much all of the dream creatures, to some dreamers' dismay.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Inks are shades of one color and black, and most of those that joined have darker palette to them, so played straight with the inks. Thanatos also counts since, despite wearing black and having to kill people, he's ultimately on the good side.
  • Deal with the Devil: These mausoleum people kidnapped a girl who'd already been trapped for thousands of years, tricked people into going into a cursed room to trap them, and presumably want to bring back a world eater. Cosmic agreed to give them an immortality ring in exchange for half the trapped people back. Deal with the devil indeed.
  • Dreaming of Times Gone By: Thanatos had a dream of someone telling the group that Cosmic dug up that they had to do something involving the ring to earn their freedom in the mausoleum which he thought was a warning not to trust those that Cosmic dug up. It turned out to be a vision of the past.
  • Dream Walker: The dream creatures, dream guardians, and Lucida can all do this.
  • Dream Weaver: The dream creatures can change dreams. It's hinted at that they need to do this to become guardians, but to what extent is unknown to most at the moment. Lucida can also do this to some extent, being a natural lucid dreamer.
    • Gravestone apparently can to some extent as well.
  • Dream Land: the dreamworld from Gravestone returned as the world the fallen dreamers go to when they sleep with a dream plush or get rescued by one.
  • Failed Attempt at Drama: The guards at the cemetery due to Lux constantly interrupting them.
  • Family of Choice: Several characters develop close, familial bonds with each other, going so far as to call each other 'mom' or 'sister'
  • Flashback Nightmare: The reason Thanatos realizes something is wrong. He reveals early on that his dreams are always this, and the fact he had a dream that wasn't one mean told him something more was going on at the hotel.
  • Foreshadowing: A few examples
    • The jeweler. She gave every dreamer a charm, and then immediately vanished. It turned out the charms were plot significant, and cursed to be able to house nightmares.
    • Everyone who got a charm ended up sleepwalking and chanting except Thanatos because he gave his to Cal, who started chanting instead of him.
    • To go along with the previous mention, Inky mentioned that the dreamers sleptwalk themselves into the graveyard and buried themselves...except Thanatos, who was dragged. The mun thought this was due to the fact that Thanatos, being a spirit, would actually alter his mind, and either the DM or in-universe characters didn't want that. It turns out this was because it was the nightmares using the charms to control people, and Thanatos, having given his away, was the only one who didn't have one.
    • It was mentioned that dream creatures could possess people if their toys are near a sleeping person when the group was trying to get the people trapped in the mausoleum free, but they didn't end up doing so. Turns out, nightmares, who are bad dream creatures, can do the same with jewelry.
  • Good is Not Nice: A few.
    • Thanatos is a notable example, being an angel who represents mercy but is incredibly sarcastic and even rude at times.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: One of the minor characters, Wrath, has one, being the embodiment of rage and all.
  • Heroic BSoD: Inky had a major one when they were told Cosmic stole the immortality ring to give it back to the mausoleum. Justified, considering they need it to continue their race.
    • Castellar also suffered one when he first realized he was trapped in the dreamworld.
    • Thanatos had a brief one upon realizing that the dreamworld wasn't safe like he thought it was.
  • Identity Amnesia: Happened to Vainglory when something asked them for their memories in a nightmare. He's become fuller of himself and snarkier, and calling himself Pride. He also said Vainglory was a dumb name. He got his memories back after a battle at his dream castle.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Twice.
    • The first is when the group went to the mausoleum. A good two-thirds of the group at least went in, and got themselves trapped. The mysterious people said they knew everyone would be dumb enough to go in and get enough "fresh blood" in to bring the mausoleum back.
    • The second is shortly after that: Thanatos brought Cal with him to the mausoleum, then later returned Cal to his family thinking he'd be safer. Turned out that Cal had the corrupting agent already-the charm Thanatos had given him-and he sent him back to a group that couldn't help him with the sleepwalking and chanting. Had Cal stayed, he would've at least been with the others that had that issue. Now Cal is missing because of it.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Envy. Something asked for his words in a nightmare. While his inability to explain himself could be attributed to his usual hesitation, the inexplicable sudden bouts of him being perfectly articulate and well spoken can not, and is a sign of something bigger at play. The muses might not have noticed yet, but the players certainly have.
  • People Puppets: Envy had been taken control of by Gravestone, making him do and say things not of his own accord. He got help eventually.
    • Dream Creatures can do this if their toy is next to someone sleeping, but they haven't used it.
    • It was revealed that nightmare beasts lurk in the jewelry the jeweler sold and gave away. All the sleepwalking and chanting was them puppeting the people wearing that jewelry. The group is trying to fix this.
  • Rag Tag Bunch Of Misfits: The entire group.
  • Red Herring: Supposedly the pen "Lucida" had and the bucket of blue sparkly ink Envy got. Although it could've been a last minute hint that Gravestone was the one controlling her.
  • See-Thru Specs: The spyglass some of the dreamers and dream creatures were searching for is this. It's why they were interrupted, as it would show that most of the dreamers were being possessed by nightmares and possibly revealed who Knack was.
  • Third-Person Person: Vainglory, their amnesiac self Pride, and Kotkas.
  • Trojan Horse: The charms at the very beginning of the campaign had nightmare beasts in them.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: The jeweler giving the charms to some of the dreamers, but whether or not they knew the nightmare beasts were in the charms is unknown. The circumstances are suspicious, though.
    • Thanatos when he gave the nightmare beast's charm to Cal thinking it was a gift.
  • Walking Spoiler: Knack. It turns out he was actually a part of Gravestone the whole time. And not only the one behind everyone disappearing, but also the one behind the nightmare-infested jewelry.

Characters

Dreamers

Dreamers are the characters from the campaign that exist normally in the waking world played by the individual players. Most of them are living, though some are spirits. They all came to the hotel for various reasons when a broadcast that showed Lucida being kidnapped was shown, and are working to save her and themselves by going between the waking world and the dreamworld. They hold little to no power in the dream world, but are at their strongest in the waking world.

    Avem
A mechanical bird who doubles as a medic. He came in to the hotel and tried to help someone he presumed dead before he was convinced to sleep.
  • Animal Mecha
  • Flat-Earth Atheist: He doesn't believe anything supernatural exists despite standing in front of a non-mechanical winged humanoid that shows no signs of decay even though that winged humanoid was supposedly dead days ago with a walking freakshow next to him. He drops this line of thought upon entering the dreamworld.
  • Ninja Pirate Zombie Robot: He is a sentient robot crane that works as a medic.
  • Sliding Scale of Robot Intelligence: He falls somewhere between Average Joe Android and Nobel-Bot, it seems.
    Castellar
  • Ambiguous Disorder: Talked about in-universe. Cas is aware he has a disorder of some sort, but can’t find a name to what disorder he has. Confirmed by the mun that he has ADHD.
  • Ditzy Genius: Potentially. Cas has shown, when he actually stops and thinks, pay attention, and/or is not in an overwhelmed emotional state, to be surprisingly insightful and smart, able to figure out most things. However, even when he knows something is a bad idea, he does it anyway. This is the biggest reason Cas gets so frustrated with himself and is sure something is wrong with him (see Ambiguous Disorder above).
  • Heroic BSoD: Suffered from one when he first realized he was trapped and powerless in the dream world.
  • Hot-Blooded: Deconstructed. Cas has lots of passion but often, cause of his impatient and impulsive nature, he tends to get into trouble he can’t quite get out of. This has caused him to be rather angry with himself every time this happens.
  • Made of Magic: Like all Undertale-based monsters, Cas is made of magic.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Cas was one of the ones to originally go into the mausoleum. He’s also fairly sure that this is him when he’s doing his worse, and that at best, he does nothing.
  • People Puppets: Due to having a pendant inhabiting a nightmare creature, when Cas was in the dream world the nightmare would control his body, making him sleepwalk and chant.
  • Sensory Overload: While it hasn’t been used to purposefully incapacitate Cas, too much noise and input can lead to this for him, making him withdraw or else he’ll lash out.
  • The Show Must Go On/Throw It In!: Cas, the main actor for an in-universe play with little to no experience, surprisingly did pretty well, save his fidgetting. Up until an actual spear-a pretty damn good one, at that-appeared in his hand thanks to a dream creature giving him an actual prop. Not knowing what to do, he threw the spear at Kuzu, who was acting as a nightmare creature he had to fight. He had to continue on with the play while worrying about Kuzu and being (understandably) very, very shaken. Don’t worry, Kuzu didn’t actually get hurt.
  • Trauma Button: Near the beginning of the event and up until he was found by Cosmic, Cas’s trama was unwittingly brought up and was the biggest reason he suffered a Heroic B.S.O.D.

    Lux
A tall pumpkin monster with a glowing face and vines instead of limbs.
  • Action Mom: As many of the characters develop a closer relationship with Lux, they start viewing her as a mother figure, making her upgrade from an action girl to this.
  • Meaningful Name: Lux means light in latin.
  • People Puppets: At one point, after falling asleep Lux gets possessed by a nightmare creature named Kotkas and is forced to attack the other members of the group.
  • Team Mom: The rest of the group has grown to view Lux as a mother figure throughout the event, and Lux has acted accordingly.
  • Unusual Pets for Unusual People: For a large portion of time, Lux keeps a tiny pet shark in a bucket, however she left it behind in the dream world when she woke up.
  • Gay Cowboy: While not male, Lux repeatedly dresses in a cowboy outfit and expresses her love for them.

    Thanatos
  • Berserk Button: see Papa Wolf.
  • Broken Bird: Years of having been exiled from home, having to kill people, and generally seeing the worst humanity has to offer have broken his spirit and made him a very jaded person.
  • The Cynic
  • Chaotic Good
  • Dark Is Not Evil: All black courtesy of being a race called the dark angels, but a good guy at his core.
  • Dirty Coward: Was seen as this when he didn't initially want to wake up from the dreamworld. Ultimately subverted as he wasn't trying to run away, he just wanted a break before going back to help.
  • Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette: His hair's not dark, but Thanatos is very pale, often described as sickly pale, with black feathered wings and dark clothing.
  • Fallen Angel: In the sense he was exiled from his home for violence. However, in his world, an exiled angel and a fallen angel are considered two different things, so he would beg to differ.
  • Friend to All Children: Sour as he is, he does love kids.
  • Good is Not Nice: He has good intentions, but due to having an unfortunate life, he's very jaded and often comes across as cold and sarcastic.
  • Good Is Not Soft: He's shy to fighting, but when a fight does break out, he's willing and ready to throw his weight around. Credulous got a taste of this when he tried to attack the plushies and got splattered across the wall instead.
  • Humans Are Bastards: Thanatos holds a grudge against humans, though when asked why, all he'll say is that humans are selfish, greedy, and ungrateful. He'll overlook it when a human saves someone, though.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Thanatos is sarcastic and cynical, and often rude, but when it comes down to it, he'll do his best to help people and make sure they're okay.
  • Knight in Sour Armor: Oh so much. The guy's had thousands of years to be broken.
  • Our Angels Are Different: He doesn't say much about other angels from his world, but he himself is sarcastic, cynical, and rude. And while he is a magic power house (dicebot granting), he's poor in hand-to-hand combat and gets tossed around by monsters and inks. Not to mention, his job is mercy killing.
  • Papa Wolf: He loves his two adopted sons deeply, and has a deeper desire to protect them (and their memory). He may be shy to fighting, but threaten his children, and you're in for a fight.
    • The only example so far was when Thanatos's necklace-given to him by his late son-was stolen. He kept his calm around Cal, but the moment he was out of earshot, he lost his temper and nearly attacked a security guard who wouldn't help. The only reason he didn't attack the thief was because he got his necklace back before coming into contact with said thief.
  • Sensory Overload: Due to his skin being very sensitive, Thanatos suffered this when KotkasLux yanked off his boot. He then suffered this again shortly after due to all the noise of fighting getting to him while he was tired.
  • Undeathly Pallor: Not dead, but not alive either since he's always been a spirit, and he sure is pale.
  • Winged Humanoid
  • Who Wants to Live Forever?: Thanatos briefly mentions this whenever he talks about his first son.

Dream Creatures

Dream Creatures are the characters that live normally in the dream world and are controlled by individual players. They aim to help dreamers out of nightmares and make them happy. They feed of good feelings. They can get to the waking world, but need a dreamer and a plushie body to do so. If given a plushie body, they are nearly helpless in that body, but they can access the waking world in it.

Villains

The villains of the campaign.

Nightmares

Nightmares, or nightmare beasts, are the bad version of dream creatures. They aim to give nightmares and hurt dreamers, feeding off pain and fear. They can get in the waking world through jewelry. There's some evidence that nightmares aren't all bad, but it seems to be a species norm for them.

    Bamemo
A cat nightmare that helps out Lucida and Mr. Knack. He aids the dreamers when they travel to another dream realm by disguising them as nightmares so they're not followed.
  • White Sheep: Bamemo is notable as the only known nightmare that's kind to the dreamers, and helps the dream creatures in the dream world. That doesn't stop him from playing around first, though.

Side Characters

Characters with varying levels of importance to the plot that are not played by individual players, instead being played by the DM or a bot.
