Darth Wiki / Beyond Despair’s Bounds

Go To

Beyond Despair’s Bounds is a submission-based original character group on Tumblr set in the Danganronpa universe, adapting the story of the game to a roleplay format and putting twists on the original rules, along with introducing completely new settings and Non Player Characters. Those select elite that possess talents worthy of recognition are scouted out and recruited into Hope’s Peak Academy, where their talents are cultivated and preened so that they may act as figureheads and raise hope for the new generation.

In this first installment of the story of hope, twenty students receive an invitation to take a field trip to a seaside town by the name of Kaiyou, as part of a new program introduced with the intention of promoting student welfare. However, once the students arrive, they quickly find that not is all as it seems - proven with their arrival coming in the form of waking up in a dusty, dirty room, with no memory of how or why they were there.

The objective? To unravel the mysteries behind the place while attempting to build courage and rekindle that precious flame of hope that burns within the hearts of the students. However, there is one tiny obstacle…

At the urging of the monochrome-garbed pirate Monokuma, supervised by the mysterious fox-masked Kumi, students are forced to kill each other in order to escape. Motives are passed out on a regular basis to encourage the students to commit the perfect crime, and avoid being labelled as guilty in the resulting class trial.

With tensions running high, only time will show who will live and who will die.

A sequel to the group began May 27th, with Class Aoi and Class Midori. Thirty-two new students are arriving at Hope's Peak Academy, looking for a fun, hopefully danger-free school year. Unfortunately, shortly after they arrive at the school, they find themselves somewhere else — once again waking up in an unfamiliar, unclean room. The group has been split into two classes of sixteen, and their goal is to find a way out of the castle which they appear to have been trapped in.

Not even the staff of the castle is certain how they all arrived, but they will support the students in their attempts to get out. But, not everyone here is so kind...

Kumi shows themself yet again, and their pursuer, Maru, also appears. Acting under apparent orders, they both force their respective class into killing each other, for reasons neither will fully disclose. The motives once again threaten the students, and once again the class trials are designed to weed out the guilty party.

Can the students prevail against this situation, and find a way out before it's too late?

Warning: all spoilers are unmarked.

    Player Characters

Ai Aizawa/Na Lee

SHSL Paparazza (SHSL Blackmailer)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ai_profile_icon.png

If you’re talking tabloids, the name Ai Aizawa will surely come up. A paparazza working for the weekly magazine Yansin Beki, she’s notorious for her prolificness and her accuracy. She seems to know just when celebrities are making trouble, and pounces on them with a high success rate; she’s rarely without some sort of news story. This proficiency at her job has made Yansin Beki incredibly successful, and made many others fear seeing the flash of her camera at their window. Her dark hair and dress makes her nigh invisible in the night, but she certainly makes her presence known.

One victim of the third murder.

  • But Not Too Foreign: Part of her Chapter 2 secret is that she's Chinese. However, the secret also reveals that she's been living in Japan from a very young age, hence her proficiency with the language.
  • Do Not Call Me "Paul": The fact that her birth name is only revealed on her Monofile would imply this is the case. Confirmed in the Youkai mastermind trial, where she corrects the Queen of Spades on it (but doesn't bat an eye at being called Lois Lane).
  • An Ice Person: After her death, she learns ice magic from Kumi.
  • Paparazzi: She is the Paparazzi. Subverted when it's revealed that it's not her official Hope's Peak talent.
  • Parental Abandonment: According to her secret, she was abandoned in Japan by her family.

Angelos

SHSL Street Artist

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/angelos_profile_icon.png

Somehow always found on skates, the elusive street artist Angelos was eventually discovered after 6 years. Spanning from small cute butterflies to large-scale waves, Angelos has made her mark in Tokyo becoming well-known and even managing to make her art become a public attraction. Every morning it’s a wait-and-see to find out where the Midnight Painter had painted her latest piece.

Not the Chapter 4 murderer, but is executed anyway due to a mistrial.

  • Conspicuous Gloves: Won't take them off during the first trial, but the second body drop has her forgetting to put them on entirely, revealing the scars on them.
  • Not Helping Your Case: In the beginning of the first trial, Angelos was high up on the list of suspects. She promptly began the trial by yelling and getting mad, drawing a lot of suspicion towards her.
  • Only One Name: Only goes by Angelos.

Briana Castillo

SHSL Good Luck

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/briana_profile_icon.png

This previously ordinary girl has cropped up as the winner of the coveted Good Luck lottery for Hope’s Peak; an immigrant from Spain with no special talents other than her optimistic attitude and a way with cats. It actually seems like an incredibly unlucky coincidence, since her older brother was a talent student at Hope’s Peak before his death.

  • Born Lucky: Since she won the Good Luck lottery, though that's also questionable now that she's stuck in a mutual killing situation.
  • Break the Cutie: Once she's given her screen for the third motive, which shows her older brother, who she thought to be dead.
  • But Not Too Foreign: She's moved from Spain, but knows Japanese. However, it is obvious to look at her that she isn't from Japan.

Cady Landcaster

SHSL Wake Surfer

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cady_profile_icon.png

Surf’s up! Cady Lancaster is the three-time youngest champion of the World Wakesurfing Competition and she’s got the sporty personality to match. Cady’s always up for a good time, though don’t try to drag her to a party. She once skipped her own birthday party. But set her up with a body of water and some water sports, and she’ll be happy.

She was the second culprit, having killed Maiori.

  • But Not Too Foreign: Another one of the many students with a clearly 'not Japanese' name, making it clear that she is not of Japanese descent. However, she has displayed that she does know Japanese well enough to get by.
  • Curtains Match the Windows: Blue and blue!
  • Signature Hair Decs: Her hair clip is important, because that's what sold her out in the end.

Dakota Merryweather

SHSL Standup Comedian

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dakota_profile_icon.png

Dakota lives in a beachy neighborhood, she’s also the SHSL standup comic in town, mostly because nobody else can stand up to the gut-busting humor she can dish out, the main reason behind that is that nobody else can say her material with a straight face.

She is assaulted in Chapter 6, but ultimately survives.

  • Tap on the Head: The mastermind beans her with a brick in Chapter 6, to the point where the wound bleeds, but she's perfectly capable of participating in the trial that follows.

Eliot Ghanem

SHSL Movie Critic

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/eliot_profile_icon.png

Eliot is a Syrian boy who moved to Japan when he was about 8. He runs a practically famous blog as a well-known (and feared) movie critic. He posts the occasional book or play criticism as well. He’s 17 years old, an only child, and lives with both parents. He’s got a very good head on his shoulders, but he never quite got the hang of getting along with people, and he can be a little abrasive due to his brutal honesty. Besides that, his fame has gone to his head a bit and he thinks pretty highly of himself.

  • Bromantic Foil: Eliot is down to Earth, bordering pessimistic, and snarky, while his bro Ryuunosuke is so optimistic that it hurts to watch.
  • But Not Too Foreign: He's from Syria, but moved to Japan many years ago and knows Japanese (as well as English) quite well.
  • Freak Out: After the third motive is revealed, and again while talking to Ryuu. It ends in Eliot begging for Ryuu to kill him.

Kuroi Kato

SHSL Student Council President

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Kuroi17.png

A very well known name at Hope's Peak Academy, Kuroi Kato is the student council president of Hopes Peak’s student council. He’s a very diligent and hard-working young man that does his best to make sure that the school is running properly and that the students are happy.

He’s been noted since elementary school to have always been a top student in sports and academics, which got him a scholarship to the elite private school, Mikami Academy, where he had pulled off the largest and most successful school festival that garnered a lot of attention and praise from the school board and student body. This also managed to catch the attention of Hopes Peak where he has been awarded with the title of “Super High School Level Student Council President”.

  • Beware the Nice Ones: Kuroi is normally polite and mild-tempered, even addressing Monokuma with the polite suffix of, "-san"; and yet it was Kuroi of all people to attack Monokuma to defend Sachiko.
  • Blind Without 'Em: His vision is apparently so bad that without his glasses everyone looks like coloured blobs to him.
  • Break the Cutie: Subverted. Despite getting his eye damaged and having his childhood friend tortured all in the same chapter, he remains calm and level-headed. This is actually double subverted; he's a Stepford Smiler.
  • Class Representative: He was chosen by the headmaster of Hope's Peak to go to Kaiyou with the others.
  • Eye Scream: When confronting Monokuma, who had just stabbed Sachiko, he gets a nice slash to the eye.
  • Japanese School Uniform: He wears a gakuran.
  • The Leader: He is the Student Council President, after all!
  • Married to the Job: He's very dedicated to his responsibilities as the SHSL Student Council President, but this proves to be a rather fatal flaw for him since this attitude is what gets in the way of him making close relationships.
  • Nice Guy: Nobody (so far) seems to have a problem with him as he remains polite to everyone he talks to.
  • Only Sane Man: Has yet to really yell at any of the students and remains calm throughout all of the trials so far.
  • Punny Name: "Kuroi" is written as "黒井". The first character of his name is "黒", which means "black". His last name said out loud sounds like "cat". Given his appearance, the pun should be clearer.
  • School Uniforms are the New Black:
    • He shows up to one of the class trials in his school uniform while everyone else was (presumably) in their pjs. Apparently he slept in his uniform.
    • Subverted as his new sprites has him wearing casual clothes after he gets attacked by Monokuma.
  • Trauma Conga Line: Dude lost his fucking eye' and found out the HPA Student Council members, which are comprised of all his friends were being tortured. This happened in literally the same day.

Maiori Rikarudo

SHSL Ghostbuster

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/maiori_profile_icon.png

Maiori is the star of a TV show about ghosts and other paranormal phenomena. The show is a complete joke, but she doesn’t know that. However, her enthusiasm and charm captured the hearts of Japan, as well as Hope’s Peak’s faculty.

She's the second victim.

Masami Kojima

SHSL Object Heads

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/masami_profile_icon.png

An artisan of quite the unique craft, Masami Kojima is a sculptor of wearable object heads, and their online shop, Faceless Portrait, is mentioned from time to time in Harajuku. Their skill is envied among many the avant-garde fashion designer and their creativity and attention to detail is simply to die for, but in person, Masami is a much different person than their legacy makes them out to be. Quiet, shy, and awkward, it’s a bit hard to believe that they’re a leading beacon in the cutthroat world of fashion. Show an interest in purchasing one of their works, however, and they’ll show off the business-oriented side of themself that let them defend their niche so effectively!

The Chapter 3 murderer, responsible for the deaths of Ai and Moeko.

  • Animal Motifs: Masami has a fish motif, first hinted at by the fact they wear a fishbowl on their head.
  • Death by Irony: They get their face practically slashed off and then get decapitated. By entities impersonating their moms. Who, coincidentally, were the people they intended to save by killing people.
  • Extreme Doormat: Anything Ryoko Yomihiro tells them to do, they'll bend over backwards to do to the best of their ability.

Mitsuo Yomihiro

SHSL TV Producer

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mitsuo_profile_icon.png

The name Mitsuo Yomihiro isn’t quite as well-known as that of his sister Ryoko, host of Pātītaimu!(Party Time!). But if you look close enough, you can see him credited as the producer of her show. He was always behind her career goals, working his hardest to support her however he could. When she struck it big with Party Time!, who else would she want producing her show other than the one who helped her get that far to begin with? He’s proven himself studious and reliable, the firm, down-to-earth voice that keeps his sister’s show running, day in and day out.

The Chapter 4 victim.

  • Break the Cutie: When his roommate dies. Even after the trial, he's clearly not okay, especially since he still has to stay in the room they once shared. He's very aware that she's no longer there.
  • Heroic BSoD: Upon discovering the body of his first roommate, he's inconsolable for a good period of time. Even once that passes, it happens yet another time during the third trial, after the execution.

Prince Akihiko Oshiro

SHSL Prince

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/akihiko_profile_icon.png

The soon-to-be leader of a tiny island nation, Prince Akihiko Oshiro is the SHSL Prince. He’s a bit shy but coming from an island with a population of about 100 people it’s to be expected. He scares easily but deep down he’s a good friend to have.

The victim of Chapter 5.

  • The Good King: Or rather the prince. Chapter 3 shows that he really cares for the people of his country, as they are the ones on his screen.
  • Modest Royalty: Actually very shy and seems to think less of himself than the other students.

Queen of Spades/Chinatsu Watanabe

SHSL Vigilante (SHSL Comic Book Collector)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/qos_profile_icon.png

Very little is known about the Queen of Spades. Of what is known, it appears that the Queen of Spades has only been active for about a year. The only real evidence of her existence in an online archive, most of which seems to be written by only two people. Despite this, she has become a popular myth among high school students. It seems that there is a story being written about her.

She's the fifth killer.

  • The Nicknamer: Big time. She has a nickname for everyone she's interacted with, and a few she didn't, aside from the prince and Rosario. This nicknames include:
    • Ai as Lois Lane.
    • Angelos as Hell Gall.
    • Eliot as Robin.
    • Maiori as Boo.
    • Masami as Fishbowl.
    • Mitsuo as Kitty or Kitty Boy.
    • Moeko as Tea Time.
    • Ryuu as Pop Culture Aquaman.
  • Pet the Dog: Despite being kind of a Jerkass, she does her best to take care of Mitsuo after the first trial.

Rosario

SHSL Pokémon Master

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rosario_profile_icon.png

Hailing from scenic Lima, Peru, Rosario is the five time defending world champion of the Pokémon video game conference. Coming out of nowhere one day she took the competition with Pokémon that surprised the world. Remember that kid that won with Pachirisu? This girl's done it, been there, and won the worlds sweeping the competition with a Magikarp. If her mastery of the games isn’t impressive enough. She’s completely mastered every spin-off, ranking in the top five of every Pokémon shuffle competition, Rosario holds the world record for speed run completing the classic Nintendo 64 spin off Pokémon Snap, and owns almost every Pokémon card ever made. Speaking of the cards, it’s safe to mention she’s a contender in the world championship for the card game. It’s just not where her focus is at. Everything about Pokémon she’s mastered. Hope's Peak was drawn to her colossal worldwide following, even if it was just Pokémon.

  • Due to the Dead: Shown in the first chapter investigation when she prays over Fumiyo's body.
  • Gamer Chick: Involved in her character as she is the SHSL Pokémon master.

Ryoko Yomihiro

SHSL Talk Show Host

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ryoko_profile_icon.png

If you haven’t heard of Ryoko Yomihiro, you may want to consider crawling out from under that rock you’ve been living under. Being born to two parents that, for the most part, live in the public eye and on camera, Ryoko’s rise to fame was hardly a surprise to anyone. What was a surprise was her incredible charm and wit on screen, paired with the ability to make even the most seasoned talk show veterans quake in their boots under the mercy of her scrutiny. It’s pretty entertaining–and entertainment is her business! Just last year her talk show, Pātītaimu!(Party Time!), was ranked among the top ten most viewed television shows in Japan–and even stole the number one spot with its New Year’s special! What a cool cat.

  • Important Haircut: Chopped all of her hair off shortly before (or after?) the chapter four motive began.
  • Informed Attractiveness: Her beauty has been brought up in both narration and by characters on more than a few occasions. It doesn't hurt that she's essentially a celebrity.
  • Little Miss Snarker: As a member of the sass squad, Ryoko isn't afraid to shoot someone down, be it live on her show, or among her fellow classmates, to her fellow classmates.
  • Playing with Fire: It's revealed in Chapter 4's trial that Kumi taught her fire magic. Unfortunately, this magic is removed after she tries to throw fireballs at Hunter.

Ryuunosuke Sakakibara

SHSL Acrobat

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ryuu_profile_icon.png

Dancing through the sky, Ryuunosuke Sakakibara is the self-proclaimed ‘world’s best acrobat!!!!!!!!’ Starting at the ripe age of 12, he’s been charming and winning over crowds for five years now with his spectacular displays of agility and flexibility. Never have you seen someone so effortlessly look like they’re soaring. With the energetic personality to go with his physically demanding work, you’re likely to remember this kid, whether you see him or hear him from a distance.

  • Allergic to Routine: He's easily bored and always looking for something else to do. Once he finds something else, he gets bored with that, too!
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Once the third trial starts, he loses his mind, knowing that his roommate was the one behind it and being determined to nail them down.
  • Break the Cutie: He's beaten up, bound, and gagged by an unknown assailant during the Chapter 3 murder. Upon waking, he also learns that two of his friends are dead. He's not doing very well.
  • Bromantic Foil: Ryuu is ridiculously optimistic and bubbly, while his bro Eliot is full of snark and much more down to Earth.
  • Cynicism Catalyst: The Chapter 3 trial. That's what happens when your roommate murders your friends and pushes you down the stairs!
  • Face–Heel Turn: Chapter 3 trial begins this motion, and by the time the chapter 4 trial is over, he's done a very solid turn from light-hearted and perpetuating obliviousness to distrusting most, if not all of his classmates and no longer caring.
  • Heroic BSoD:
    • Sachiko's getting stabbed, his sister is getting tortured... It's a bad time.
    • Has a much more serious one the moment he realizes Masami is the culprit that murdered two people. Ryuu becomes more infuriated than he's ever been, and is beyond ruthless in his accusations because he refuses to let someone he trusted get away with murder.
  • The Resenter: No matter what the reasoning may be, he was so livid with Masami for killing Moeko and Ai that the execution barely sparked a reaction.
  • Stepford Smiler: Displayed as Queen of Spades chews him out, and he proceeds to smile as he always does and agrees with it all.

Sachiko Arakawa

SHSL Relationship Counselor

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sachiko_profile_icon.png

Did your sweetheart forget about your anniversary? Did they forget today was your birthday? Then there's a good chance that you may need to visit Sachiko-chan, known for her sassy but great advice Sachiko-chan is one of the best Relationship Counselors at Hope's Peak. It would be hard to miss the girl despite not knowing who she is though, towering at the height of six foot seven and flowing green hair, the girl is easily seen.

  • Aloof Ally: She doesn't seem to want to go around killing anyone, but to say she sincerely cares about all of them would be an overstatement.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: Becomes a lot kinder as time goes on.
  • Due to the Dead: After the trial to solve Fumiyo's murder, Sachiko tells Ryuu that she wants to pay respect to the victim.
  • Little Miss Snarker: Very light on the little part, though.
  • Major Injury Underreaction: Upon being stabbed by Monokuma, her response is a few choice swears. Later on, when she wakes up, she just asks Ryuu if she looked cool.

Suzuka Sawamura

SHSL Lifeguard

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/suzuka_profile_icon.png

Suzuka Sawamura is currently the head Deck Supervisor of Hope’s Peak Academy Pool. She attained her title of SHSL Lifeguard after becoming the youngest lifeguard ever to place first in all categories in the Royal Life Saving Society Commonwealth Lifesaving Championships. In addition to being certified in all forms of life guarding, Suzuka also has all her Instructors certifications, and occasionally teaches NLS. Prior to her enrollment in Hope’s Peak Academy, Suzuka has help to coach a prestigious middle school competitive swim team that has won Nationals for three years straight.

  • Heroic BSoD: Upon Sachiko getting stabbed, Kuroi losing vision in one of his eyes, and the added stress of her screen during the third motive, Suzuka does not have a time.

Takumi Ueno

SHSL Jeweler

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/takumi_profile_icon.png

Takumi grew to fame after taking over the shop and making jewelry on order and fast. Everyone would be impressed by this young man’s assiduity and focus. He did come from a poor background but his fascination with gems and love of precision has helped him gaining interest in the jewelry area. One day, hearing that a small boy would learn the art of jewels, the once recognized jeweler took Takumi under her wing and taught him that art. The 7 years old boy learned how to make jewelry and while at the start it was quite nice, by age 10, he already made beautiful necklaces who was ordered for graduation students in a bal, and the jewels lasted forever. One day on age 15, few weeks before his birthday, there was a small while left before a huge gala with actors and singers, one designer in particular asked for a specific jewel to use and the colors at a very last minute. No one could respond to his crazy request. However among skilled and renowned jewelers, stood one teenager who claimed he could do it. He earned a lot of mockery, but Takumi didn’t care and managed to respond to the request few hours after the request and the quality of the product was so excellent, no one dared to laugh at him. After the gala, the celebrity wanted to see who made it and talked to the teenager in enthusiasm. Using their status, they pushed Takumi to the public, who then recognized his amazing natural talent, hence Hope’s Peak Academy sending him an invitation. Takumi did not hesitate and agreed to go to school so he could study easier.

  • Nice Guy: Talk about subverted; he's the mastermind!
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Drops this to Sachiko after her conversation with Monokuma ends in her getting stabbed.
  • The Quiet One: Takumi is relatively quiet, though not really shy.

    NPCS

Kumi Nogitsu

A person in a fox mask who stopped Monokuma from killing Fumiyo during chapter one. While they seem relatively opposed to the idea of mutual murder going on, they haven't stopped any of the things Monokuma has done. Are they on the side of the students, or do they simply not care enough to help?

To the shock of many, they are the tenth victim of the sequel, killed by the culprit of Chapter 7 (heavily implied to be Shirou).

  • Anticlimax: Their mask is knocked off when they first appear in the sequel, revealing their face. Their face seems perfectly normal.
  • Black Sheep: They can't perform the magic that the rest of their clan is capable of. This is a big part of why they were disowned.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: While they have no problems with telling students to kill one another, they also have no problem trying to help them in other ways if asked.
  • Cool Mask: They always wear a very nice fox mask.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: Their cause of death is spinal cord transection, and part of their spine is visible in their body art. This in addition to the fact that they were burned from the nearby temple fire. Ouch.
  • The Faceless: They almost never take their mask off.
  • Fangs Are Evil: Subverted in that they aren't really evil; they just aren't on the side of the students. However, it can't be debated that their canines are sharp.
  • The Gadfly: Conversations they've had with Kayo (where they seem to be deliberately difficult) and Hanzo (dropping a glass bottle of antidote onto the floor after he demanded it) cements this.
  • Mysterious Past: They even make reference to it in the second game. Fortunately, the second game also sheds some light on it.
  • An Odd Place to Sleep: Though they have a bedroom in the castle, they've slept on the rafters, in the basement, outside...
  • Self-Made Orphan: They lost control of their powers when they were young, accidentally burning down the castle they called home. Since their family were bound to the castle...
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Their favorite food is strawberry mochi, but in the game itself, they've been seen more frequently with sandwiches.
  • Unreliable Narrator: They claim they always tell the truth, but they haven't revealed everything.
  • Younger Than They Look: Would you believe that they're only 19? It's probably the mask; when their face is revealed in the sequel, they do look rather young.

Kaigara

The shopkeeper. He's a small eel who lives in a tank, talking to the students who come in to use their coins. Always having something nice to say, he's well liked by all of the students, which is a stark contrast to his fellow NPCs. Also gives useful testimony to students if he happens to overhear something during a murder.

Hunter Keelhalls

A young boy with purple hair. One of the many NPCs who watch the trials. Behaves like a cheerful young boy, but has a darker side to him. He was the culprit of the first murder, and seemingly was executed, but come the beginning of chapter two, he was back. According to him, he had to do it, and he's 'sorry'.

  • Spotlight-Stealing Squad: He shows up a lot more than the other NPCs in the first game. This tendency was greatly toned down in the sequel.

Sea King and Queen

A mermaid and merman who live by the docks. While the King cannot speak, the Queen speaks for them both, and claims that while they can't bring the children home, they are doing their best to protect them from what lies in the depths of the sea itself. Ryuu takes it upon himself to name them Natacha and Theo.

  • Out of Focus: They didn't appear on the main blog after their introduction, and their character blog has no posts on it at all.

George

The mouse living in Dakota's bed. It's unknown to what extent he can communicate, as Dakota has said very little about him.

  • The Ghost: Only mentioned by Dakota. Is he real? Who knows.
  • Pokémon Speak: When Ai finds him in Youkai, all he says to her is George.
  • Real After All: Ai finds him under the equivalent of Dakota's bed in Youkai, and he shows up again during the final investigation. He seems to be real enough.
  • Shipper on Deck: His presence in Dakota's bed is what forces Ai and Dakota to share a bed. Given Daikota is a fairly popular ship...

Maru Nyakko

A young girl with cat ears! She appeared in one of the hot springs, and she doesn't seem to like Kumi.

  • All There in the Manual: Her name was only publicly revealed in the sequel.
  • Out of Focus: Never really appeared publicly again after her initial "discovery." Until the end of the mastermind trial, where she very rapidly came back into focus.
  • She Is All Grown Up: She's a little girl in the first game. At the end of the first game and in the second game, she appears as an adult, at her true age.

    Spoiler Characters

Shinji Collumcille

The prince of Kirandel. After Maru chases Kumi off at the end of the first game, he appears to both the living and the dead students in order to return them back to their world.

  • Squishy Wizard: Shinji's a very skilled mage, but also very physically weak.

Honoka Nogitsu

The patriarch of the Nogitsu clan, and the father of Sora and Kumi. Like the rest of the Nogitsus, he perished when the castle burned down a decade ago.

  • The Dreaded: Everyone, including Kumi, fears his name.
  • Hate Sink: One of the most despised characters in the BDB canon, and for good reason.

Class Aoi

    Player Characters

Akae Kase

SHSL Art Historian

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/01_1katty7.png

A living, breathing, art history textbook, Akae Kase is here to tell you about all the drama that went down 700 years ago and how it influenced that one painting by that one artist, and why you should totally care about it! The redhead, half Polish and half Japanese, is a loud, overly-talkative, but kind person, who loves making new friends. If you’re a nice individual, chances are Akae will like you and will go out of her way to get to know a little bit more about you. Don’t mind someone who talks at a million kilometers per second for hours and hours? Then say hi to Akae, and perhaps you’ll learn a thing or two about art and its history as well!

The sixth culprit, executed for the murders of An and Shun in Chapter 5.

  • Fiery Redhead: She's made it clear she has a lot of fight in her from the beginning, given she slapped Mizuiro after an argument.

Akemi Al Amari

SHSL ???

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/02_tznong6.png

This person… who is she? Clearly she attends Hope’s Peak, but her talent is marked with three question marks. Not two, not four, but three. Well, she definitely seems to enjoy formal dress. Perhaps she’s SHSL Fashion Model? However, she definitely has not appeared in any fashion magazines. What she has, however, is appear in the local news in Tokyo, detailing the unlawful detention of one Akemi Al Amari…

The ninth victim, killed by Arashi in Chapter 6.

  • Honor Before Reason: In particular, she reveals her strength in the third trial proudly, even going so far as to kiss her bicep. Not a smart thing to do when all the class knows about the killer is their small size and great strength.
  • Japanese Delinquents: Was seemingly involved with these in her backstory.
  • Yellow Eyes of Sneakiness: Bright yellow eyes, and she certainly is sneaky!

Conor Breagadoir/Anguo Lee

SHSL Hurler (Not a Hope's Peak student)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/07_ve9xtgj.png

Conor Breagadoir seemed to burst out of nowhere onto the hurling scene! His schooling was pretty normal for most of his life. He went to a good, highly-rated Irish school, which taught him maths, languages, and, perhaps most importantly, hurling. There was no formal hurling class, but he learned it through recess periods, and he fell head over heels in love with the sport. In middle school, he joined the school’s hurling team, and was eventually noticed by the manager of the professional Kilkenny hurling team. He was applauded for his advanced skill — so much so that he was asked to join the Kilkenny team. Naturally, Conor accepted, since it meant money for his family, fame for his name, and hurling for his time, and he has been playing professionally ever since. Hope’s Peak Academy noticed him when Kilkenny won the 2015 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship, with Conor playing as the team’s full forward.

The fourth culprit, but he isn't executed for his murder of Kayo due to someone else's false confession. However, his luck doesn't last for long, and he's the seventh victim, killed by Akae in Chapter 5.

  • Berserk Button: It seems to be people getting his name wrong.
  • Canon Foreigner: He started out in Class Midori, but was switched into Aoi shortly after prologue began, hence why he is on this character page.
  • Exotic Eye Designs: His green eyes have a four-pointed star surrounding the pupil.
  • Phenotype Stereotype: Red hair, green eyes, is it any surprise he's Irish? As it turns out, this was purposely invoked in story.
  • Punny Name: The second trial reveals that he was hiding his entire identity beneath the guise of Conor Breagadoir. He was trying to fool all the students. Conor is a con man.

Kayo Nagase

SHSL App Developer

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/09_cg5wxgl.png

It wasn’t exactly headline news when the main person behind the concept of BlueMoon, one of the country’s most downloaded mobile organization apps was outed as being a high-school student who apparently began developing it mostly out of boredom, but it definitely was news that raised a few eyebrows. Hailing from Naka-ku, Okayama, Kayo Nagase is something of a mystery, he has engaged in several online interviews about the app and its planned updates. But with a tendency to change topic when a question gets too personal, not all that much is really known about Nagase’s personal life, only his unwavering devotion to the project and somewhat eccentric disposition. While very few of Nagase’s previously released apps seem to have ever gained much publicity, BlueMoon's overall success, along with Nagase’s passion for the project seem to be what attracted Hope’s Peak’s interest.

The fourth victim, killed by a mystery culprit (later revealed to be An) in Chapter 4.

  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: While he's definitely talented at what he does, as evident in his title, his eccentricity tends to make him come off as such.
  • Cloud Cuckoo Lander: Tends to come off as extremely eccentric in pretty much every situation, and does things in a completely absurd and roundabout manner, even when it's something completely mundane and simple.
  • Exotic Eye Designs: While they aren't really visible on his sprite due to their colour, he has Xs in the place of pupils.
  • First-Name Basis: Refers to pretty much everyone as [firstname]-chan as a default, no matter how well he knows them, which can get awkward to say the least.
  • Lethal Chef: Has attempted to make cake on a stovetop and fried sugar as a "treat".
  • Nephewism: Lives with his aunt and grandparents.
  • The Nicknamer: He calls An either Arm-Arm-chan or Grandpa-chan.
  • Sweet Tooth: He outright refuses to eat anything that he doesn't think is sweet enough, with very few exceptions.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: He absolutely adores any sort of candy (bar chocolate), and especially soda-flavoured candy.
  • What the Hell Is That Accent?: Well, not so much the accent itself, he clearly speaks in a Honichi dialect, but just how exaggerated it is, and how much he slurs his words together.
  • Yellow Eyes of Sneakiness: While he hasn't really done much yet, he did end up looting makeup from the victim's room in chapter 2.

Lily Badens

SHSL Theater Makeup Artist

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/04_5hn9cb8.png

Lily Badens is a well-known makeup artist around UK, and that’s an accomplishment on its own, especially with being a teenager! She has been involved in being parts of makeup teams and even going solo for prepping the many actors and actresses for their bigtime theater shows in Europe. Even in the bright spotlight, her talent as a makeup artist shines through; creating silhouettes and imagery that only could have been imagined and never applied onstage. Currently she is working alongside Japanese and English theater productions to bring Western plays into Japan, with her talent being the selling point of these theater productions.

The second victim, killed by Valentino in Chapter 2.

Mitsuki Arai

SHSL Janitor

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/14_a0gjwra.png

As an employee of a cleaning outsourcing business managed by his grandparents, Mitsuki Arai has taken on a wide variety of janitorial jobs and performed them with efficiency far beyond that expected of a mere high school student, let alone the average adult in his field. His uncanny ability to eliminate even the most daunting of messes in a fraction of the time it would have taken most anyone else quickly made his grandparents’ business one of the best-known in Kitakyushu, as clients from all walks of life sought out his cleaning talents. Eventually, rumors of the unusually talented young janitor caught the attention of Hope’s Peak Academy, who wasted no time in sending Mitsuki an invitation to the school after learning of his stellar work history. Very little is known about Mitsuki beyond said work history, and judging by his general reluctance to share much in the way of personal information, he prefers to keep it that way.

Assists Shirou in killing Kumi during Chapter 7, although this fact is never uncovered by the class. Survives to the endgame.

  • Emotionless Boy: Seems to be the result of his timidity and reluctance to draw notice to himself rather than his being a robot. Despite being a machine, he does have the capacity for emotions - he just represses them heavily.
  • Friendless Background: Was socially isolated at his old school, leading him to treat the stay at the castle as a golden opportunity to make friends for once.
  • Hiding Behind Your Bangs: His bangs reflect his rather withdrawn, timid nature. They end up concealing the fact that Kumi broke the eye covered by his bangs when he was helping Shirou murder them, keeping him beneath suspicion.
  • The Quiet One: Mitsuki really is not one to say much without outside prompting.
  • Quizzical Tilt: Has a tendency to do this when faced with perplexing situations or otherwise confused.
  • Raised by Grandparents: He has spent a good part of his life living with his maternal grandparents.
  • Ridiculously Human Robots: Reveals himself to be this during Chapter 5 while underneath the influence of truth serum.
  • Shrinking Violet: He's neither the most outgoing or most confident of individuals.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: Despite his usual lack of emotion, he's a genuinely friendly and kind-hearted person.
  • Sweet Tooth: Has an affinity for candy and would gladly eat sugar out of the bag were he not afraid of looking weird for it. Justified as he runs off of a sugar-powered biofuel cell - he needs to eat sugar-rich foods to keep running.
  • Undying Loyalty: Develops this towards Shirou after the two reveal their secrets to one another in the wake of the third trial. Ultimately, this loyal streak culminates in him helping Shirou kill Kumi in order to protect the rest of the class.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: He's terrified of water and is unable to bring himself near any pools, lakes or the like in the game setting. Naturally, this is because he'd short-circuit like most any other piece of electronic equipment if he fell in.
  • Younger Than They Look: He's chronologically four years old but looks like a regular teenager.

Mizuiro Ren

SHSL Springboard Diver

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/10_poya3ks.png

Half British, half Japanese, Mizuiro (Mitchel) Ren is the SHSL Springboard Diver at Hope’s Peak Academy. First noticed at the age of 10 when he placed first at a diving competition in Australia, he continues to take time off from school to compete internationally. Currently of 19 years of age, he can typically be found working at the HPA Pool with Daiki Kageyama and Suzuka Sawamura.

The fifth culprit, executed for the murders of Ayano and Artie in Chapter 5.

  • The Nicknamer: Typically assigns a nickname to someone the moment he meets them, and rarely changes it unless he cares about them.

Valentino Takamitsu

SHSL Gondolier

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/13_xube3bx.png

Ever feel like befriending a tall, aloof guy who loves to hug people? Well, now it’s possible with Valentino in the house! As a gondola rower from Venice, Valentino has terrific balance, co-ordination and a wonderful singing voice - although his sluggish movement and general laziness often overshadow his good points. Patient enough to rival a saint, he might forget others do not quite appreciate his slow, monotone speech or minimal emotion, but it hasn’t hindered him so far. Doesn’t stop him from sassing people, either.

The second culprit, executed for the murder of Lily in Chapter 2.

  • Beneath the Mask: Valentino always wears an emotionless expression, but he certainly has personality. What he really thinks or how he feels about a person is impossible to figure out from his exterior alone. He revealed to be very annoyed at highly emotional, dramatic people during a conversation with Mizuiro.
  • Big Brother Instinct: If anyone is in trouble, Valentino wants to help. It may take a while for this instinct to kick in, but when it does, he really will set anything aside to help someone. His motives for such are unknown.
  • The Slacker: Valentino is very lazy. He'd much rather sleep than have anything to do with murders or other despair shenanigans; but alas, he can't.
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: Valentino is considered very handsome/pretty by common standards, and he is coincidentally the tallest of his class.
  • Tragic Keepsake: Valentino's scarf is a memento from his deceased brother. This is not hidden information, but Valentino doesn't announce it at every turn either.

Yuudai Akiyama

SHSL Long Distance Runner

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/15_9n7cgkv.png

Nothing will ever cut down Yuudai in a competition! Initially unknown to the public, the name of Yuudai Akiyama rose quickly in a small school, and then expanded to the media who then focused on the small boy who always reached the top. Originally from a village, the blond was known for rarely staying indoors. Yuudai would run anywhere as he was free to go, with fierce determination. Was he ever tired of running? No, never! This very same determination ensured a place for the boy in school competitions; this is also where he took the specialty only in long distance running. In such short while, he easily reached the first place and managed to break every single record he himself surpassed all the time. Despite, or maybe because of, his short height, Yuudai quickly made a name for himself in the news. In addition of the recognition he gained, some people noted that the boy was far from… Well, kind. Wherever he has malicious intents or not is unknown to this day; and it did not stain his reputation as a star runner, despite the childish air radiating from the boy.

The third culprit, executed for the murder of Charger in Chapter 3.

  • Tiny Schoolboy: He's only 4' 7", by far the shortest member of the class.
  • Yellow Eyes of Sneakiness: Averted; while he certainly has yellow eyes, he doesn't seem any sneakier than the rest of the class.

    NPCs

For information on Kumi, see the character page for the first game.

Midori

    Player Characters

Arashi Fukui

SHSL Inventor

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/03_qbb17pu.png

Arashi Fukui is a man you cannot describe in a word, or two for that matter. With a great number of gadgets, gizmos, widgets, and doodads under his belt, his machinations have changed lives all over the globe, be it for better or worse. He’s always had a knack for tinkering with common objects around his household as a child, a knack that soon grew into a fullblown career of sorts. If there’s anything he’s known for better than his creations, it’s his personality. While he’s rarely appeared in interviews for unspecified reasons, those whom have spoken to him personally can confirm he’s quite the odd young man. Brilliant, but odd. Though it’s rarely specified how so, and one could only wonder how he acts in person – a personality like his is one you have to see to believe…

The seventh killer, who killed Akemi in Chapter 6.

Asa Josef Amsel

SHSL Hacktivist

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/01_hpchy5x.png

Like most teenagers and children of this era, Asa often found themself on the internet. From an early age, they were an avid forum browser, and learned a lot from those forums. One of the things they learned was coding. They picked up on it very quickly and soon learned how to deconstruct codes as well. They started using this knowledge to get into the accounts of people they didn’t like and mess with them. As word spread about what they were doing, people started paying them to do so. They soon moved on to larger projects as their skills increased, eventually shutting down and redirecting websites of major businesses. Their signature move is replacing what they removed from these websites with videos and pictures of cats overlaid with information about everything immoral the company has done.

The fourth killer, who killed Haru in Chapter 4.

Ayano Aizawa

SHSL Painter

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/02_o3auzqz.png

Quickly taking the art world by storm, Ayano Aizawa is a charismatic ball of energy that wouldn’t strike you as the type to enjoy such a delicate art. However, once you put her in front of a canvas, it becomes apparent just why people refer to her as the SHSL Painter. She enjoys pushing the boundaries of the medium, making wildly colorful abstract works of motion and form that seem to jump off the wall at you and grab hold of your imagination. Only 17 years old, she’s already been exhibited at art galleries across Japan and even a few overseas galleries. Her process is unique, drawing on her sound-color synesthesia to produce audio works that she then translates onto paper, painting the work in her mind before it ever makes it onto the canvas.

The fifth victim, killed by Mizuiro in Chapter 5.

  • Horrible Judge of Character: She thinks that Honoka Nogitsu is merely pompous, but decent if you get to know him. That's right. Honoka. She's also quick to forgive several of the murderers.

Haru Ikezawa

SHSL Behavioral Psychologist

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/08_wyiorfl.png

After shooting to fame with a groundbreaking study into aggression that he published at the age of 15, Haru Ikezawa has become one of the top new names in the field of behavioural psychology. Highly academic in nature, he has pioneered some of the most controversial new ideas about the brain in modern science, and apparently only wants to continue studying. Despite his vigorous work ethic, he seems to have a peaceful outlook on life.

The fourth victim, killed by Asa in Chapter 4.

  • Digging Yourself Deeper: Every time he tries to have a conversation with Rini, though they seem to be on better terms now.

Hiiro Louise

SHSL Roller Derby Girl

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/09_f5eev0l.png

Known by derby fans only by her pseudonym, this scarlet player for the Pretty Killer Rollergirls has the biggest reputation of any player on her team. She’s known mostly for being a jammer, though she’s had no trouble being a pivot or blocker in the past either. However, a part of her fame comes from her appearance and persona, being known for constantly expressing a hot-and-cold personality that many of her fans find endearing. Her and her team’s popularity began blowing up after their part in the national roller derby tournament in their 10th year, and though they didn’t win at first they ranked very high and marked their presence in the sport. When they effortlessly won the championship the following year, their skills were even more greatly admired as the best in junior roller derby, and the main jammer who’d helped the most in their victory received a Hope’s Peak invitation as a result.

Killed by Maru shortly after the class merge in Chapter 5, for trying to attack Maru.

  • Brutal Honesty: Can hold back sometimes, but she doesn't really hide her thoughts on others and what they do.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Disagrees with the notion of executing the culprits, especially when the executions involve cruel irony.

Katashi Haruyama

SHSL Line Cook

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/10_njvbww4.png

Katashi Haruyama is the son of Jiro Haruyama, head chef of renowned French restaurant Dans La Mer in Kyoto. Many in the culinary world believe that he is being groomed to inherit the restaurant when his father retires. With his no-nonsense attitude, and a bright mind for adding new twists to his father’s classic French dishes, he seems to be on the fast track to culinary superstardom.

The second victim, killed by Nobu in Chapter 2.

  • Team Chef: He's the only hope they have right now, as it seems that none of the other students are capable of preparing a meal.

Kuroi ★ Hoshi

SHSL Sukeban

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/05_a6auesm_9.png

The name is familiar and well known and sometimes even feared. Kuroi ★ Hoshi. Or more personally known, Fujikawa Tsukiyama. Known for her time spent in a girls delinquent group, Koyōte as their leader. Kuroi ★ Hoshi is one feared by many her age and older in Osaka. Due to her mysterious past Kuroi ★ Hoshi has climbed to the top and earned the title of SHSL Sukeban, but not much else is known about the small delinquent.

Still alive as of Chapter 7.

  • Failed a Spot Check: While investigating one of the victims in Chapter 5, she merely comments that Conor dyed his hair and became emo. Never mind the fact that he was shorter, his talent was revealed to be false, and he had a different name and ethnicity.

Ming Zhu Mao

SHSL Modern Fashion Designer

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/06_pq8gg0a.png

Sneaking into the fashion industry, Ming Zhu Mao burst into the scene out of nowhere. Their name was nothing, and then it was everywhere; models were strutting their designs down the runway, and magazine spreads displayed their work in many photoshoots. Elaborate, yet with a certain finesse, no would could deny that Ming Zhu was paving a new road in modern fashion with their new view.

The first culprit, who killed Louie in Chapter 1.

Miriam Thompson

SHSL Swing Singer

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/w8klffc.png

What’s the source of that vintage music that pours out in Osaka every weekend? You may acredit your snapping fingers and jiving feet to none other than Mia Thompson. Despite being the youngest member of the Barrelhouse’s band, Mia is by far one of the most requested singers in the club’s long lifetime. Known for her self-respecting image which inspires individuals to appreciate their bodies regardless of what others may say, she has an electric personality that could light up the entire town, with enough energy thrown into her singing to power even the most boring of sticks-in-the-mud to get up and jive until the early morning.

The third victim, killed by Rini in Chapter 3.

  • Canon Foreigner: She actually began the game in the Aoi roster, but was switched into Midori shortly after the prologue began. Thus, she appears on this character page.

Rini Akahina

SHSL Idol (SHSL Boxer)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/16_7bd8spk.png

Not too much is really known about Rini, not even her full name. She’s nowhere near actually famous, only having just become an idol, and is pretty much entirely unknown at this point. How Hope’s Peak had managed to find her is a mystery along with exactly what she had done to qualify as super high school level but there is no doubt that she definitely is good, Hope’s Peak makes no mistakes.

The third culprit, who killed Mia in Chapter 3.

  • Anywhere but Their Lips: Is regularly seen giving Aoi kisses pretty much everywhere on her face but her lips.
  • Apologizes a Lot: Along with apologies being pretty regular she also tends to go a bit overboard when suggesting things that may right what she thinks she's done wrong.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: During the second trial she punched Yuuki, and pretty hard too, even she isn't really sure why.
  • Cuddle Bug: Very much a hugger, and occasionally even a kisser, though only ever on the cheek.
  • Dramatic Sit-Down: She does this a lot, though usually on the floors of bathrooms rather than on things that one typically sits on.
  • Dramatic Stutter: She tends to get nervous or flustered easily and tends to stutter when nervous or flustered so.
  • Feminine Women Can Cook: Averted, Rini is probably one of the most typically feminine characters in the game but by her own admission if she tried to actually cook something she'd probably hurt herself.
  • Kitsch Collection: Has a collection of Sylveon plushies so large that it's only ever described with absurdly large numbers. Also has several of the figurines typically seen in such collections though not much room to actually display them.
  • Lipstick Lesbian: One of the most typically feminine characters in the game and one of the biggest lesbians in the world.
  • Mysterious Past: Insinuated in her bio, as no one really knows anything about her.
  • Survivor Guilt: Says that she should have been the one to die when she began to confess to killing Mia.
  • Unlimited Wardrobe: She's been sprited in twelve different outfits, whereas most students are only seen in one or two.

    NPCS

Cinereus

    Player Characters

Hisoka Fukuda

SHSL Adoptables Maker

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/05_vxrbphj.png

Would you like a unicorn with a tiger’s tail and head, or perhaps a serpent-like species unlike anything on Earth? Something of your very own, to boast about to all your friends? Well, the individual known as Azuki-chan is here to deliver! Boasting an impressive resume including being a millionaire (in Neopoints), playing the stock market at the tips of their fingers (the Flight Rising stock market, that is), and being an avid voice in the kemono fandom, they are a known name online and among others who share their interests. Getting their starts on the forum Fang, they created original species and sold them to an eager audience, gaining so much of a following that when the site closed, the entire community followed them as they started their own blog dedicated to their adoptables. Having a presence spanning multiple websites, and marketing both their original designs and custom crafts at affordable rates to the patrons of the sites, and being a presence at several notable fan conventions, is it any wonder that their talent was recognized by a certain renowned academy?

...Yes, it sort of is.

They are taken over — or activated — at the end of prologue to serve as the game's host. As of Chapter 2, they're still alive.

Setsuko Wakahisa

SHSL Improv Actress

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/15_jfm3wlr.png

Do you need an actress to perform in My Fair Lady? Or someone to embody the Prince of Denmark in your off-the-cuff production of Hamlet? Or just someone who can take anything that’s thrown at her on stage and continue it with seamless grace? Setsuko Wakahisa sounds like the girl you want to meet! She’s been acting in stage shows for over a decade, more than half of her life, and it shows. She can do it all, from classical Shakespeare, to Broadway hits, to a brand new show written by an up and coming theater director! And she can change her technique and character to make you laugh or cry, no matter what she’s supposedly doing on that stage — that’s improv for you. Her career is filled with successes and triumphs already, and as she approaches graduation, more are sure to follow and brighten up this young actress’s future!

The killer of Chapter 1, killing Usagi by mistake after attempting to resuscitate her. She is executed in that same chapter.

  • Happily Adopted: Adopted at a very young age by her parents, and holds no angst about it.

Takako Imai

SHSL Fashion Blogger

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/16_94bmedg.png

If you knew her personally, you really wouldn’t expect Takako Imai of all people to be one of the most influential bloggers in the country, especially given her attitude. Originally gaining recognition for her good looks, street photography and commentary on trends in the Harajuku area, along with her ability to modify practically anything to look good. Takako’s blog was originally set up four years ago, only becoming even the slightest bit of prominence when Takako herself was 17. Steadily gaining a following until it exploded in popularity last year after one of her liveblogs of Chanel’s, in her own words, sad and droopy new spring/summer collection. Now one of Ameba’s top-ranking bloggers, Takako is well known for her blunt and often downright harsh words on current trends and collections, many find Takako to be too rude to be anything but just an attention seeking kid, however her fans claim that her outspoken nature is part of the entertainment, her harsh words and dry sense of humour being the main source of her popularity.

Usagi "Usachi" Kobayashi

SHSL Selfie Queen

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/17_lu8k7jx.png

Her latest masterpiece, a full length commercial for Pocky snacks, has set a new standard for both the advertising industry and for the bright and rising celebrity herself. Now that she’s conquered the internet, the next place for her to grace with her presence is Hope’s Peak Academy!

The victim of Chapter 1, killed by Setsuko Wakahisa.

    NPCs

Canele Aoijima

SHSL AI Programmer

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/canele.png

The brains behind the SHSL AI Programmer. If it weren’t for her making use of her talent to make ends meet, she could just as easily have been SHSL NEET. Afraid of the world, Canele relies on the persona of Autonomous Unit Jin Jin to be her face and voice. After her parents died she stumbled upon their research; an android body nearing the final stages of completion. All it required was a program to give it orders and a personality. Afraid of being alone, but afraid to face the world, Canele used her knowledge of coding along with research materials left by her parents to (after many failed attempts) write the code that would become Jin Aojima. When Jin was invited to Hope’s Peak, her cover was nearly blown- Forcing her to accept, under the condition that Jin could continue acting as her Proxy, and that her identity as SHSL AI Programmer could continue to remain a secret. Of course, if you’re reading this, that cover has already been blown.

Tropes appearing in the original include:

  • Anyone Can Die: The first person to be executed was one of the NPCs. They were also the first murderer, and they killed off one of the mod's characters.
  • Back from the Dead: An NPC that dies comes back for the next chapter. This cycle repeats when they're killed in Chapter 5's trial and revived for the next one.
  • Black Blood: Much like the source material, all instances of blood are drawn as it being pink. All the characters behave as if the blood is normal, making it a purely stylistic choice.
  • Dark Secret: Chapter 2's motive has every student getting a card with their greatest secret on it, as Monokuma threatens to tell everyone what it is.
  • Didn't See That Coming: Hunter before his execution. He thought he was going to get away scot-free. Of course, this is because, according to him, he was just following orders.
  • Electrified Bathtub: Averted. Despite the fact that Fumi was electrocuted at the bathhouse, she wasn't electrocuted in the water. In fact, it was one of the pieces of evidence that cleared Jellygirl that she couldn't have been the murderer or the body would have been wet.
  • Famed In-Story: As per usual for a DR roleplay group. Most of the characters are famous in their field.
  • Good is Not Nice: Many of the students who are trying their hardest to free everyone are definitely not the typical hero personalities you'd expect.
  • Hell Hotel: Averted. The hotel is probably the safest place, since all of the students have roommates and one can't get away with murdering their own roommate or sneaking out in the middle of the night very easily.
  • I Have Your Wife: The third motive. All students get a water screen following them around, showing the person or people they love the most being tortured - sound included.
  • Improbably Female Cast: A shocking percentage of the victims and killers have been female, solely because the cast is largely female.
  • Karma Houdini:
    • What the first killer thought they were. It's also the goal of any murderers.
    • Chapter 4's culprit gets away with the murder of Mitsuo.
  • Not Helping Your Case: Angelos, who was fairly suspicious for murder, getting angry at the first trial.
  • Obvious Rule Patch: The idea that NPCs can kill during the first trial. This was the only time it would be allowed, and it is likely due to the fact the first chapter had to be a bit rushed.
  • Official Couple:
    • Eliot and Angelos were.
    • Later Sachiko and Ryuu, and Bria and Rosario.
  • Power Trio: Ryoko, Ryuu and Sachiko all sit next to each other during the trials. It's the sassiest side of the trial room.
  • Real Life Writes the Plot: The mods are both a part of another group that started at the same time and had to shift the date of the first trial so the two groups weren't on the same schedule.
  • Rule of Pool: Not with the first pool, but in Chapter 2, when the second pool was introduced, both the Queen of Spades and Masami fell in.
  • Wham Episode: Chapter 3. Everyone's loved ones are being tortured until someone kills. The trial reveals that Masami committed a double murder, Sachiko admits Ryuu was on her screen, and the Queen of Spades tries to defend her friend to the death, only to be disproved at every turn.
  • You Wake Up in a Room: All 20 students wake up in a room, which really isn't what they expected.
