Battle Despair contains examples of:
- Body Paint: Those metal things on Lily's face and arms? That's just body paint.
- The Chosen Many: Seventeen of the best students from Hope's Peak are chosen for a supposed field trip.
- Deserted Island: Where the students find themselves when they wake up. To be specific, it's more of a Castaway Island.
- Fantastically Indifferent: Despite being trapped on an island, Lyrow doesn't seem too phased by it.
- Improbable Weapon User: While some of the students get weapons, the others get the strangest items for killing. One of them even gets a book about the Battle Royale novel.
- Shout-Out: The name of the project is called the 'Battle Royale' Project.
- Stupid Good: Despite being a very kind person, Ccieri's kindness does not improve her intelligence.
- Sunny Sunflower Disposition: Even after the students found out that they are trapped on the island to kill each other, Kioko still remains to be one of the most positive of the group.
- Tragic Keepsake: Kioko gives Lily her hat right before she dies.
