Crosses The Line Twice / Dream SMP

Go To

The Dream SMP, being set in a Crapsack World, is rife with Black Comedy, and many of those moments involve the characters crossing the line several times over.

Note: Unless otherwise specified, all tropes pertain to the characters, not the content creators that play them.

General

  • The sheer fact that the name of Techno's netherite sword is the Orphan Obliterator.note  At one point, he even manages to kill Fundy with it.
  • Similarly, Technoblade renamed the pickaxe he canonically killed Quackity with to "Toothpick".note

Season 1

  • Schlatt dying of a heart attack. What makes it funny though is the lead up, with him being completely wasted, lifting weights and suddenly asking if anyone smells toast.
    • Just moments after he died, Schlatt's ghost made a brief return just to insult Quackity from beyond the grave. While the insult in question is a massive Trauma Button for Quackity and left him distraught, practically everyone else present laughed at how ridiculous the insult seemed to them.
  • Amidst all the chaos of Jschlatt's death, Dream switching sides again, Philza logging on for the first time, Wilbur's destruction of L'Manburg and his subsequent death, and Techno's Face–Heel Turn coupled with a genuinely haunting speech, the fact that Techno decided to name one of the Withers he tries to use to destroy what remains of L'Manburg "Subscribe to Technoblade" easily counts. Even at what is by far the most dramatic moment since the election, Techno can't help but plug his channel.

Season 2

  • Schlatt's funeral was a huge moment of Black Comedy in itself, due to all but one of the attendees celebrating the dictator's death by robbing his coffin and making jokes at his expense, but the most egregious incident was Quackity's song at the funeral. The song's already offensive enough, being about celebrating Schlatt's death and him burning in Hell, but what really sells it is that he sings off-key with autotune. Not to mention that during said funeral, he eats Schlatt's heart.
  • Tommy breaking down crying over pictures of Tubbo? Heartbreaking. Tommy breaking down crying with the Funny Mic on, over THESE pictures of Tubbo, while Girl Dream and Mexican Dream make fun of him and Last Christmas plays in the background? Absolutely hysterical.
  • Back during the Exile Arc finale, several people in Tommy's stream chat were screaming at him to "DO A FLIP"... when his character was towering up to jump to his death. What allows this to qualify is that Tommy has since canonized his stream chat.
  • Dream's hallway of important items (and empty slots for the items he doesn't yet have)? A terrifying, budding collection of an absolute sociopath. The slot for Bad's most precious item being a cage for Skeppy? Hilarious. Even Tommy and Tubbo, who previously reacted to the hallway with absolute horror, couldn't help but laugh a bit upon seeing the cage. As if that weren't enough, Bad later finds the cage when the rest of the server storms the area, and his reaction is one of utter confusion.

Season 3

  • Amid the general depressing atmosphere of the server as everyone reacts to Tommy's final canon death, the Eggpire decided to throw a party, celebrating his death. In his house. As well as change his floor to a better "party atmosphere". That is only a little funny. Immediately moving to the Big Innit Hotel after Captain Puffy kicked them out of Tommy's house? Hysterical.
  • During Quackity's mostly nightmare-inducing May 22nd stream, Chapter 2 opens with an absolutely ridiculous informational video about slimes. At one point, when indicating that slimes spawn underground, the camera starts above ground, then pans down... which wouldn't be funny, if the thing it focused on above the surface wasn't a stone cross with a sign saying "rest in piece Tommyinnit LOL".
  • In the middle of promoting his channel and his merchandise after the prison break, Techno drops the bomb on Niki that Ranboo was dead, and immediately resumes ringing his bell for meta self-promotion, joking that he was capitalizing on the death of his character's Morality Pet.

Season 4

  • Dream's January 14, 2022 lore video features him testing out the revive-book roughly a year prior to the video's release, with one of Dream's main criteria for selection being a member of the server who's old... because "[he and Punz] can say it was an accident" and that "they're gonna die soon anyway".
  • The "Saving Michael/Avenging Ranboo" stream has Techno retrieve some books "about people on the server" that Dream gave him from his ender chest, in order to find out where Sam lived. By that, we mean Techno was given the coordinates to Sam's base. Translation? c!Dream gave c!Techno permission and resources to dox people on the server.
