Founded in 1994 by David Braben and a few associates, its first games were a port of Frontier: Elite II on the Amiga and Frontier: First Encounters, before changing gears to Tycoon-style games, producing the third game in the RollerCoaster Tycoon series as well as the Thrillville games. It also produced the LostWinds games and a few launch titles for the Kinect before resurrecting its dead Elite IV project as Elite Dangerous via Kickstarter, allowing the company to reclaim the Elite IP as its own. Alongside Elite Dangerous, the company also worked on Coaster Crazy, a sort of Creator-Driven Successor to RollerCoaster Tycoon and Thrillville.
Around 2015, the company started work on Planet Coaster, which is essentially RollerCoaster Tycoon 4 in all but name. In 2019, they announced Planet Zoo, which similarly is Zoo Tycoon 4 in all but name.
In 2019, Frontier established a publishing label, Frontier Foundry. In 2023, the label was discontinued due to most of its titles underperforming.
