Dimple Kapadia (born 8 June 1957) has had one of the stranger career trajectories in Bollywood. Actor/director Raj Kapoor put her under contract when she was a teenager, and her role in his film Bobby 1973 opposite his son Rishi Kapoor made her an overnight sensation at age sixteen. But she met and fell in love with her screen idol, Rajesh Khanna, at a film industry party, which led to her marrying him and retiring from film immediately after making Bobby. She and Rajesh seem to have been genuinely attached to each other, but his personal issues and her desire to act again led to them separating in 1983, after the birth of their two daughters. She made an impressive comeback, starting with generic girlfriend roles in male-centered films and then moving up to more artistic fare. Her performance in Dil Chahta Hai as a middle-aged woman in love with a younger man, was particularly acclaimed, as was her cameo in Luck by Chance. In more recent years she has transitioned to the standard "mother" roles that every actress of her generation gets now. Normally a reserved woman who likes acting but dislikes the hype, publicity and media craziness that goes with it, she has spent more time in the public eye lately due to the death of her estranged husband and the attempts of his mistress to sue Dimple and Rajesh's other heirs for financial compensation.
