Super Sentai
(aka: Power Rangers)

Go To

Counterpart Combat Coordination is used often in Super Sentai/Power Rangers whenever there's a squad of Psycho Rangers or when two teams of good Rangers are made to fight. In addition, counterparts from two teams may fight side-by-side for team-ups.

  • In the "Gangsta Crizzab" episode, the Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers are beaten by their counterparts in a straight up fight. Instead of trying any confusion, they have to go back and get empowered weapons from Zordon, which pretty much breaks their rule of "don't escalate fights when you don't have to." The parody lampshades this with quotes like "It's time for some Black on Black crime!"
  • The Trope Namer Psycho Rangers knew the moves of their respective Space Rangers inside and out, and by learning their voices, switched back the first time they tried an opponent switch. Then T.J., the Blue Ranger, comes up with the idea of making everyone blue and, to make sure it works, having the Silver Ranger dress up as "Psycho Silver" to make the Psycho Rangers even more confused. It works, and the Psychos eventually resort to attacking each other to make sure they are the only ones who can beat their counterparts. For the rest of this run of the Psycho Rangers, coordination wasn't needed again as the rangers could go 2-on-1 from this point forward.
    • ... And then they went right back to it both times the Psychos were revived. When it happened on Power Rangers Lost Galaxy, it resulted in two teams of Rangers going against the Psychos. The Black Space and Green Galaxy rangers, being the only color that changed regularly between seasons, went against the Black Psycho Ranger. The Magna Defender note  took on the regular villains.
  • Played with when the Dino Thunder and Ninja Storm Rangers played Let's You and Him Fight, as the expected color-coding was averted. Yeah, the two Red Rangers fought each other, but the other two fights were a Yellow vs. a Blue, being based on gender instead of color (Yellow Dino Ranger vs Blue Ninja Ranger was the Designated Girl Fight, Blue Dino vs. Yellow Ninja was between guys).
  • However, colors rather than genders set the match-up when Power Rangers S.P.D. did a Ranger-on-Ranger fight. Rather than switching, they win by simply having greater experience by this point, as the battle happens in the penultimate episode of the season.
  • In Gokaiger Goseiger Super Sentai 199 Hero Great Battle, during the initial skirmish between the Gokaigers and Goseigers, they go at each other by color. That is, Marvelous vs. Alata (Red), Joe vs. Hyde (Blue), Luka vs. Moune (Yellow), Ahim vs. Eri (Pink) and Don (Green) vs. Agri (Black). Then of course there's the Humongous Mecha fight between Gokai-Oh and Gosei Great.
    • During the battle against the Black Cross King's animated Ranger Keys, the Gokaigers and Goseigers each take on a Sentai of their own before joining with their colored counterpart against a bunch of their Ranger Key counterparts. So you have Alata and Marvelous against a bunch of Red Rangers including the crimson red Kabuto Raiger, Joe and Hyde against a bunch of Blue Rangers, Luka and Moune against a bunch of Yellow Rangers, Ahim and Eri against a bunch of Pink Rangers (including a couple of pink-accented White Rangers), and Don and Agri against a bunch of Green and Black Rangers (with the navy blue Kuwaga Raiger as an odd man out). Also Gosei Knight takes on a bunch of Sixth Rangers by himself.
  • One of the highlights for Kamen Rider × Super Sentai: Super Hero Taisen are the battles between the eponymous heroes that are arranged in such ways. For example, Blade vs. JAKQ (Card-themed), Kabuto vs. Red Buster (Super-Speed), and so forth. And naturally, Decade vs. Gokai Red, being the lead characters of Reunion Show seasons who can use the powers of their predecessors.
  • When the Gokaigers show up in Doubutsu Sentai Zyuohger, Gokai Red is the first to show up and steals the Great King's Credential with the red Zyuoh Eagle in hot pursuit. Whilst this is happening, the other four Zyuohgers face the four Gokaigers, with a Designated Girl Fight between the blue Zyuoh Shark and Gokai Yellow / Yellow Buster, the white Zyuoh Tiger and Gokai Pink / Kyoryu Pink and the "Boy Fight" between the yellow Zyuoh Yellow and Gokai Blue / AoNinger and the green Zyuoh Elephant and Gokai Green / ToQ #4. When Zyuoh The World arrives on the scene he is depressed to find that he has no-one to fight and is raring to go when Gokai Silver shows up, only for him to call an end to the fight.
  • In Kaizoku Sentai Ten Gokaiger, the Super Sentai Derby Colosseum sets up fights between combatants that share a theme:
