    Guardian

James MacDonald Hudson / Guardian

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/6654266_james_hudson_earth_616_from_amazing_x_men_vol_2_8_001.jpg

Notable Aliases: Jamie Hudson, Jimmy, Mac, Jimmy Hudson, Dr. Hudson, Major Maple-Leaf Vindicator, Weapon Alpha, Antiguard

Nationality: Canadian

Species: Human cyborg

First Appearance: X-Men #109 (November, 1977)

"Alpha Flight! Glad to see you finally made it, people. Pick a "partner" and let's finish this fight."

The original leader and founder of Alpha Flight. Department H, the section of Canada's government that works with superhumans, is named after him. Originally thought to have died in Alpha Flight #12, he later returned through some rather complicated circumstances involving aliens and becoming a cyborg. Briefly went by Vindicator, but is best known as Guardian.

  • Clothes Make the Superman: As Guardian/Vindicator, James wore a suit powered by electromagnetic energy to give himself powers. Interestingly, the suit was originally to be used for mining.
  • Cyborg: After his "death" James was both machine and man all rolled into one.
  • Face–Heel Turn: Despite being close friends with several mutants, he joins the anti-mutant terrorist organization Orchis after Mars is terraformed into a mutant world and declared the capital of the solar system by Krakoa. James is extremely torn by this decision but views the potential threat to humanity as too great to ignore.
  • Flying Firepower: James while wearing his suit was this.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: James built his own suit, which made him one of the most powerful members of his team.
  • Grand Theft Prototype: This is the origin of Weapon Alpha/Vindicator/Guardian, although he was stealing his own prototype. James Hudson was a leading petrochemical engineer and scientist for the Am-Can Corporation developing a powered exoskeleton suit. When he learned that his work would be used for American military purposes, Hudson raided his workplace, stole the prototype suit and destroyed the plans. He leaves the suit to be recovered (albeit without the vital control helmet, which he built before coming to the company).
  • Flying Brick: James' suit enhanced his strength somewhat, allowed him to fly, and had a force field that made him nigh-invulnerable. One of his most spectacular power works essentially by locking himself in the air in position with Earth's magnetic field: in doing so, he stays in position while the planet rotates under him, which means he will essentially be "travelling" west at roughly 1000 miles an hour!
  • Hand Blast: James' suit could produce blasts of electromagnetic energy as its main form of attack.
  • Happily Married: James was happily married to his former secretary, Heather Hudson, though their relationship soured later on.
  • Minion with an F in Evil: As part of Orchis. Unlike pretty much everyone else there, James isn't in it for the Fantastic Racism, so he's largely stuck standing around being appalled at what everyone else is doing.
  • The Mole: In Alpha Flight (2023), he Shaman, Snowbird, and Puck are pretending to cooperate with Orchis and the Canadian government in their campaign against mutants when in actuality they are working with Northstar’s resistance effort.
  • Screw This, I'm Out of Here!: His first appearance had him coming to bring Wolverine back to Department Alpha whether he wanted to or not. Then he accidentally knocked out Moira Mactaggert. Faced with an insanely pissed off Banshee, he ran for it.
  • Stuff Blowing Up: James' first "death" was the result of his suit exploding, though it actually just sent him through time and space.
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: He's 6'2'', has a heroic build, and dark hair.
  • Touched by Vorlons: James was transformed into a cyborg by aliens.
  • Wearing a Flag on Your Head: As much as he was inspired by the Fantastic Four to be a Super Hero, he obviously was inspired by Captain America to be his country's equivalent.
  • We Used to Be Friends: Jimmy and Heather were the first people to encounter Wolverine after his escape from Weapon X, and helped restore his humanity. Things went sour when Wolverine went off to join the X-Men, and even more so when Alpha Flight decided to drag Wolverine home.

    Snowbird

Narya / Snowbird

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/5711263_img_9852.jpg

Notable Aliases: Anne McKenzie, Anne McKenzie-Thompson, "Ice Queen"

Nationality: Canadian

Species: Demigodess

First Appearance: X-Men #120 (January, 1979)

"Mortals. Heed the words of the earthly Champion of the Inua... the Gods of the North whose sacred lands you have entombed beneath obscenities of concrete and steel. All your weapons do is annoy me, but if you continue to defy me... I promise you will see my wrath."

The daughter of a mortal and a Goddess, Narya was to be the champion of her people against the Great Beasts, the Gods of death and decay. She has several super-powers including flight and super-strength, but she's best known for her ability to turn into an albino female version of any animal (originally limited to animals from the frozen north). She later married a mortal named Doug Thompson and had a child, but this led to a tragic turn of events ending with her death at the hands of Heather Hudson (a mercy kill given the circumstances). She later returned and accepted her identity as a goddess.

  • The Ageless: Snowbird aged rapidly from a child into an adult, but stopped afterward. She briefly became mortal after her marriage to her human husband, something that caused her to become suicidal.
  • All Amazons Want Hercules: After her death and rebirth, Snowbird was one of several women (and Northstar) to have slept with the actual Hercules, Avenger and notable ladies man.
  • Flight: In her humanoid form or her various animal forms, Snowbird is able to fly.
  • Mercy Kill: Was dealt one by Heather Hudson after she'd been corrupted by the dark nature of her sasquatch form.
  • The Mole: In Alpha Flight (2023), she Shaman, Guardian, and Puck are pretending to cooperate with Orchis and the Canadian government in their campaign against mutants when in actuality they are working with Northstar’s resistance effort.
  • Monster Is a Mommy: True of Narya in her monstrous sasquatch form.
  • Parental Substitute: Shaman was essentially this to Narya, since her real father was a mortal and her mother was a God who couldn't travel to the mortal world for long.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: When angered or in pain, Snowbird often gained crimson eyes and monstrous face that she called her "true fires."
  • Semi-Divine: Snowbird is the daughter of a Goddess and a mortal. Though technically a demigoddess, she has referred to herself as a goddess on numerous occasions.
  • Immortality Begins at Twenty: Narya rapidly aged into a young adult woman and then stopped.
  • Shout-Out: Her mother the Inuit goddess Nelvanna is a homage to the (non-Marvel) Canadian comic-book heroine Nelvana, and Narya herself has similar traits to that heroine (half-goddess origin, winged helm).
  • Super-Strength: Snowbird is super strong, even in her normal form. By transforming into a sasquatch, she becomes strong enough to fight the Hulk.
  • Super-Toughness: Snowbird is a tough woman, even in her normal form.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: Originally, Narya was able to transform into a white version of any animal native to Canada. After her first death, this limitation was removed and she was seen becoming animals such as a whale.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: Due to the nature of her birth, Snowbird couldn't leave Canada's borders without dying. This limitation was removed after her initial death.

    Aurora

Jeanne-Marie Beaubier / Aurora

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/5709879_img_9610.png

Notable Aliases: Sister Beaubier

Nationality: Canadian

Species: Human mutant

First Appearance: X-Men #120 (January, 1978)

"My name is Jeanne-Marie Beaubier. Aurora...is a sickness. A symptom of childhood trauma, which I demand be excised. I'll tell you the location of Alpha Flight's base. As soon as you turn on your machines and burn every last vestige of her out of my soul."

A mutant and the twin sister of Northstar. Aurora was sent to live at a religious school for girls as a young child after her parents died, separating her from her brother. Her experiences there scarred her, leaving her with split personality disorder. She later joined Alpha Flight and reunited with her brother, though their relationship is often rocky.

  • Anti-Hero: Type I. She has multiple personality disorder, but at least originally was generally a very nice person despite that, simply switching between ascetic and introvert, or hedonistic and extrovert.
  • Brother–Sister Team: With her brother Jean-Paul.
  • Claustrophobia: The nuns at her school locked her in a small cupboard when she misbehaved. This left her with an intense fear of small spaces.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: The religious school she was at was abusive, both physically, emotionally and mentally, causing severe mental problems that took years to heal.
  • Damsel in Distress: Aurora often played this role, despite her superpowers.
  • Determinator: Depowered and facing a horde of demons, Aurora refused to give up and fought them with pure skill.
  • Depower: Aurora lost her powers when she "shared her light" with Northstar to heal him of a mysterious disease that was killing him. She regained her powers when he gave it back.
  • Driven to Suicide: Shortly after M-Day, Aurora's situation got so bad she was on the verge of suicide. Only a brainwashed Northstar coming in stops her.
  • Ethical Slut: Aurora likes men and she likes sex, and don't you forget it. Don't, however, confuse that with her manipulating men with her sex appeal. Northstar did, and that led to Aurora altering her powers to give herself space from him.
  • Funetik Aksent: On occasion, Jean-Marie would lapse into an outraaaageous exaggerated French accent. More bizarrely, it could come and go within the same issue.
  • Flight: Aurora is able to fly at high speeds.
  • Killed Offscreen: Done at the start of X-Factor (2020) when a anti-mutant terrorist engineers a car crash that leads to her drowning, but thanks to the Five's resurrection process the death it lasts only a day or two.
  • Lesser Star: Compared to her much more famous (gay!) twin brother. She's shown signs of resentment about this in the past.
  • Light 'em Up: Aurora was originally able to produce a blinding flash of light through contact with Northstar. Sasquatch's alterations allowed her to produce light on her own.
  • Pointy Ears: She and her brother have them as a secondary, unrelated mutation.
  • Really Gets Around: At least one of her personae.
  • School Marm: Aurora's "Jeanne-Marie" persona was essentially this.
  • Shipper on Deck: For her brother and Kyle.
  • Split Personality: Aurora originally had two: "Jeanne-Marie" and "Aurora." The former was a schoolmarm, homophobic towards Northstar, and could not use Aurora's superpowers. The latter was sexually uninhibited, compassionate, and a loving sister / girlfriend. At last count there was at least nine, and she can change from one persona to the next almost on the fly depending on her needs.
  • Stripperific: Her most famous attire is a full bodysuit. However, she also wore a yellow and white number that was a leotard that showed a lot of cleavage.
  • Super-Speed: Aurora's primary power. At first, she could run / fly at Mach 10, though her speed was reduced after her lover Sasquatch altered her abilities. Her powers later returned to their full capacity when she and Northstar made up.
  • Theme Twin Naming: Both Aurora and Northstar are both themed after the northern lights and the north star.
  • Too Kinky to Torture: Norman Osborn learned this the hard way in a "Utopia" side story.
  • Wonder Twin Powers: While Aurora's speed / flight powers are all her own, she was initially only able to produce light while in contact with her twin brother Northstar. For a time, their touch had the opposite effect and left the twins temporarily depowered.

    Northstar

Jean-Paul Beaubier / Northstar

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/645742c3_fdc8_4daf_a5e9_94b9c16340df.jpeg

Notable Aliases: Jean-Paul Martin

Nationality: Canadian

Species: Human mutant

First Appearance: X-Men #120 (January, 1979)

Speed: Hey, you used to be an Olympic skier, too, right? You won gold a few times. God, I bet you were fast. Olympic speedster skier?! Olympic speedster skier going downhill on snow?!
Northstar: I'm also rich and gay, since you seem to be keeping score.
X-Factor #7 by Leah Williams and David Baldeon

Jean-Paul Beaubier, better known as Northstar, is a Marvel Comics character created by Chris Claremont and John Byrne, first appearing in X-Men #120 (dated April 1979).

A French-Canadian mutant with the abilities of flight, Super-Speed, and light manipulation, Northstar is notable for being the first (canonically) gay Marvel superhero, and one of the first ever. While his homosexuality was sometimes alluded to, then-editor-in-chief of Marvel Jim Shooter (as well as The Comics Code) prevented as much from being outright confirmed.

A mutant and the twin brother of Aurora. While his sister went to a religious school after their parents' death, Northstar was sent to live with his cousins the Martins. He eventually became an Olympic-level skier, though whether this was due to his powers or not was left ambiguous. He later, begrudgingly, joined Alpha Flight in order to meet his sister.

It wasn't until 1992 —thirteen years after his first appearance— that Scott Lobdell was allowed to let Northstar come out in the pages of Alpha Flight #106. He would later get married to boyfriend Kyle Jinadu in Astonishing X-Men #51, which was the first-ever portrayal of a same-sex marriage in mainstream American comics.

While he is most frequently associated with the X-Men nowadays, Northstar was initially introduced as a member of Alpha Flight —a superteam sponsored by the Canadian government— alongside twin sister Aurora, who more or less has the same abilities as him. Since then, Northstar has served as a reliable teacher at the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters, and an on-off active X-Man. As of 2020, he's leading the new form of X-Factor.

  • Anti-Hero: Type II.
  • Badass Teacher: For a time, he was a teacher at the Xavier Institute.
  • Big Brother Instinct: VERY protective of his sister Aurora. Mess with her and draw Jean-Paul's ire, even when the two are on the outs with one another. This goes to a level that Jean-Marie sometimes finds patronizing and overbearing.
    • In X-Factor, we see how he’s now extended this to those under his leadership in an Email exchange with Xavier who shows interest in Eye-Boy's growing abilities:
Xavier's Email: Northstar, Firstly, we congratulate you and your X-Factor compatriots on a successful de-haunting of the Boneyard. We knew you were capable and eagerly await an update on your handling of saving Siryn from the Morrigan. Secondly, it has been brought to the Quiet Council's attention that there have been some very interesting developments regarding Trevor's mutation. Please keep us apprised of this young man’s extraordinary sight development. All the best, Charles.
    Northstar’s response Email: No.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: First by the Hand after his death, then by the Children of the Vault, which at least helped fix the former.
  • Brother–Sister Team: With Aurora.
  • Captain Ethnic: He's often defined by his nationality.
  • Changeling Fantasy: Subverted in Alpha Flight. In issue #50, after Northstar and Aurora acquired pointed ears and powers that resembled Elves, Loki appeared to them to reveal their "true" origins as half-elf, half-human hybrids. According to Loki, their biological father was human, but their mother was an elf who had fled from Alfheim (one of Asgard's realms) and was hunted down by members of her race. The "accident" that killed their parents was actually an assassination plot by the elves. A number of serious health problems that Northstar had at this point were caused because his physiology as an elf did nor allow him to thrive on Earth. In that issue, Northstar left the team (written out) to seek out the other elves and get some answers. In issue #81-82, Northstar finally finds the elves... who pretty much laugh at him and tell him that he should not have listened to Loki's fairy tales. He is not an elf after all.
    • This is occasionally alluded to, with Thor remarking at one point on meeting Northstar and Aurora that he's sure they're at least part-elf because of the pointy ears (that and the arrogance).
  • Chick Magnet: He was a huge hit with the ladies early in Alpha Flight. Funny how that turned out.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Through various background stories in Alpha Flight, Northstar has gained quite a lengthy one. Both of Northstar's biological parents were killed in an accident shortly after his birth. He was effectively adopted by a couple related to his parents, but separated from his twin sister Jeanne-Marie who was send to an orphanage. His adoptive parents were both killed in another accident when Northstar was 6-years-old. He was raised in foster homes, and engaged in petty theft as a teenager. Seeking a cause to serve, he became a supporter of an independence movement for Quebec and joined the terrorist organization Cell Combattre. He severed ties with them after he realized that the fanatics in the group had a lot of blood in their hands. Only after that did he seek a career as a professional athlete and was chosen for recruitment by Department H.
  • Death Is Cheap: Killed by Wolverine, resurrected as a brainwashed minion of the Hand. That took time to fix.
  • Flight: Northstar can fly at speeds approaching Mach 10.
  • French-Canadian Jerk: Early on, though he has levelled out a little bit over the years. In Alpha Flight, he held most of his teammates in disdain, disapproved of most of his sister's Aurora's romantic relationships, and particularly disliked her (sometimes) boyfriend Sasquatch.
  • Happily Married: To Kyle Jinadu, a normal human.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Killed by a mind controlled Wolverine in this manner.
  • Incompatible Orientation: Had this with Iceman during his time with the X-Men. Ironic, because Iceman would be outed as gay nearly a decade or so later.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Northstar acts prickly to everyone but his sister Aurora. Still, that doesn't stop him from saving his teammates regularly, adopting a young baby suffering with HIV, being a teacher that his students look up to, and being a loving husband. He also cried after Walter Langkowski's first death.
  • La Résistance: He’s leading one against Orchis and Canada’s oppressive government during Fall of X.
  • Light 'em Up: Could produce powerful bursts of light when in contact with his sister and later learned to do so on his own.
    • Light Is Good: Mostly anyway; He is a superhero and a member of Alpha Flight, at at his best does enjoy being a hero. However...
    • Light Is Not Good: He has gone Knight Templar a few times, most notably during his time under HYDRA's control. Even after the Heel–Face Turn[s] he's still kind of a jerkass at times.
  • Manly Gay: Aside from his elfin appearance, Northstar is this. It doesn't hurt that the character was around for nearly ten years before he could come out on panel.
  • Noodle Incident: Apparently had a thing with Hercules that he's embarrassed to talk about.
  • Rapid-Fire Fisticuffs: He's able to do this because of his super-speed.
  • Super-Speed: Northstar is fast, both on the ground and in the air, and he saw no problem using it to win the gold in the Olympic ski jump.
    • In X-Factor #7, he tells Speed that his top speed is 189,299 miles per second (which is faster than the speed of light), but going that fast would kill him:
It would destroy me. Physically, I mean. Not emotionally. I can't breathe at that point because I've created a vacuum and my organs are getting crushed, my bones pulverized into dust.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Whether it's because of their history together or the fact that neither of them is exactly Mr. Personality, Northstar and Wolverine get along very, very poorly.
  • Theme Twin Naming: He and his sister's codenames are astronomy-themed and refer to the North (as in Canada, where they're from).
  • Token Minority: For one thing, he and Aurora were the only Quebecois members of Alpha Flight. Oh, and he's usually the only gay member of any team he's in, too.
  • Too Qualified to Apply: His skiing medals were taken and he was banned from the sport when it was discovered he is a mutant speedster, despite the question of whether his success was due to his powers or not being left ambiguous.
  • Wonder Twin Powers: When he is with his twin sister Aurora.

    Sasquatch

Dr. Walter Langkowski / Sasquatch

Notable Aliases: The Ape, Box, Chewie, Dr. L, Muppet, Sasquatch, Walt, Wanda Langkowski, Wookie Yelling-Thing

Nationality: Canadian

Species: Human gamma mutate

First Appearance: X-Men #120 (January, 1979)

"The Great Beasts used me, but they brought us all here for a reason. We're best when we're together. We can take down the Great Beasts, which means we have a chance against the Chaos King. They feared us, that's why they needed us to protect them. If we can join with the God Squad to help the fight... It's the Chaos King's turn to fear us. Live or die, we do it together. As Alpha Flight!"

Brilliant scientist and former football player, Walter Langkowski heard about Bruce Banner's experiments with gamma rays and his transformation into a Hulk. In an attempt to become like the Hulk, Walter dosed himself with huge amounts of gamma radiation. However, he actually opened a portal into the realm of the Great Beasts (the evil gods of death and decay) and was possessed by one of their number. This gave him the power to become a super strong and nigh-invulnerable Sasquatch like creature. His situation only got more complex as the years went by.

  • Action Girl: As "Wanda."
  • And Show It to You: Snowbird ripped his heart out after Tanaraq took over his body and showed it to him before he died.
  • The Big Guy: Alpha Flight's strongest member, bar none. Generally liked to scrap and fight as well, despite being a genius.
  • Bodysurf: Okay, let's run through it. First he had his own body, then he was a soul in the Box robot, then he briefly went into the Incredible Hulk, then he went into the shrunken body of Smart Alec, then he was in Snowbird's body which was then altered to become his original body again. Whew!
    • In Immortal Hulk, Walter ends up possessing Doc Samson's body as "Walter Samson", after Samson had himself possessed Walter's body to escape the realm of The One Below All.
  • Cyborg: Inhabited the Box robot for a little while after the death of his original body, making him a human soul in a robotic shell.
  • Demonic Possession: Was taken over by the evil god Tanaraq after a while. Turned out his Sasquatch form was actually Tanaraq's true form.
  • "Freaky Friday" Flip: During Immortal Hulk, Doc Samson ends up reviving in Walter's Sasquatch body, and Walter himself ends up taking Leonard's dead body. They even sort of mix their code names, with Leonard calling himself Doc Sasquatch and Walter calling himself Walter Samson.
  • Gender Bender: His soul later inhabited Snowbird's dead body, turning Walter into Wanda. Snowbird later changed him back.
  • Genius Bruiser: Langkowski is a highly respected scientist and, in his Sasquatch body, is one heck of a scrapper.
  • Healing Factor: He heals fast from most injuries, though he was killed once, so it has its limits.
  • Mighty Glacier: Sasquatch isn't going to win any speed contests. The feral Goblyn sliced up his eyes and he couldn't keep up with her. Still, he can tank most other hits with ease.
  • Mystical White Hair: While in Snowbird's body, Walter had this in his human form and his Sasquatch form.
  • Nigh-Invulnerability: His Sasquatch form (in all its incarnations)is pretty hard to damage in any way.
  • Painful Transformation: In his early appearances his transformation into Sasquatch was very difficult.
  • Omnidisciplinary Scientist: Originally an expert in radiation, Langkowski also used equipment to alter Aurora's powers to turn her from a mutant into a mutate and generally assisted the team with all kinds of scientific issues.
  • Shapeshifter Mode Lock: In Immortal Hulk, it's noted that over the last few years, Walter's been Sasquatch more and more. Though Walter insists nothing's wrong, when he tries shifting back to human in private, it hurts like hell.
  • Statuesque Stunner: As Wanda, Walter had VERY long and shapely legs.
  • Super-Strength: How much depends on the era you're reading, but generally he's the strongest member of his team. In his first appearance in Uncanny X-Men he lifts and easily throws a plane weighing 250 tons. He once fought the Hulk for fun!

    Shaman

Dr. Michael Twoyoungmen / Shaman

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/5709995_img_9694.jpg

Notable Aliases: Talisman, Doc

Nationality: Canadian

Species: Human

First Appearance: X-Men #109 (February, 1978)

"You made me doubt myself, Carcass — my faith... and my power. In the end, that was your only real weapon. The rest... was all illusion."

Michael Twoyoungmen is a Sarcee mystic and member of the original Alpha Flight. Much like Dr. Stephen Strange, Michael was a skilled surgeon who later turned to mysticism. In his case, it was because he had failed to save his wife from death and had become estranged from his daughter. Shaman also delivered Snowbird into the world and bound her to the mortal plane. Michael's powers were originally centered around a mystical medicine pouch that he could draw magical items out of, though he spent a period where his powers allowed him to ask spirits for help in performing mystical feats.

  • Bag of Holding: Shaman's powers typically center around his mystical medicine pouch, which essentially acts as this, allowing Shaman to pull numerous mystical objects out of it. In actuality, the bag contained nothing at all, and it was Shaman's faith that allowed objects to be pulled from it.
  • Depower: Michael briefly lost his abilities after her failed to save his daughter from being sucked into his medicine pouch, which shattered his faith and prevented him from using his medicine pouch.
  • Guest-Star Party Member: During Immortal Hulk Puck brings him along to help Gamma Flight find Doc Samson's body.
  • Magical Native American: As his codename indicates, he's a magical shaman.
  • The Mole: In Alpha Flight (2023), he, Guardian, Snowbird, and Puck are pretending to cooperate with Orchis and the Canadian government in their campaign against mutants when in actuality they are working with Northstar’s resistance effort.
  • My Greatest Failure: Michael feels this way about being unable to save his wife, since it led not only to her death but also to him becoming estranged from his daughter for many years.

Recruits

    Marrina

Marrina Smallwood

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/1798297_alpha_flight_1_eagleshamvariant.jpg

Notable Aliases: Leviathan, Marrina McKenzie

Nationality: Canadian

Species: Plodex

First Appearance: Alpha Flight #1 (May, 1983)

"Of course they're alive. Just with a few scars...so the next time they try and break someone...they'll remember they're pretty fragile too."

Marrina Smallwood was part of a plan by an alien race called the Plodex whose MO was to send thousands of eggs to a planet, have those eggs absorb the genetic traits of the inhabitants and then destroy them from within. However, Marrina's egg was one of two to survive its journey to Earth and landed in the water. Sometime later, it was found by a family from Newfoundland and was touched by the family's mother. Thus, she transformed into an amphibious female humanoid with green skin and hair. Nevertheless, Marrina was happily adopted by the family and their community. Originally a member of Beta Flight, she briefly joined Alpha Flight before leaving the team to be with Namor.

  • Action Girl: Usually a gentle soul, but fierce when someone she loves is threatened. And that's not even getting into when she turned into a sea serpent...
  • Aliens in Cardiff: She's an alien who grew up in Lady Cove, Newfoundland.
  • Alliterative Name: While she was married to Namor, her name was Marrina McKenzie.
  • Angst: Probably the most of anyone on the team. And that is saying something!
  • Enemy Within: After the Master of the World drew out her alien instincts, she was perpetually fighting her own biology that wanted to turn her into a vicious monster.
  • Eye Beams: As the Leviathan, Marrina had these.
  • Green-Skinned Space Babe: Cute alien girl with green skin. Actually hatched on Earth and was raised by humans, though.
  • Happily Married: After a bit of angst, she ultimately had this with Namor.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: By her husband Namor with the Black Knight's Ebony Blade. She got better later.
  • Making a Splash: Marrina could control water, though she rarely used this ability.
  • Moe: A young, innocent girl who, thanks to her perpetual Woobie status in the original series, always looked like someone who just desperately needed a hug.
  • Monster Is a Mommy: Marrina transformed into a monstrous sea serpent called the Leviathan after laying eggs.
  • Sci-Fi Bob Haircut: Alien girl with a short bob haircut.
  • Super-Speed: Marrina's speed in the water was matched by very few characters.
  • Super-Strength: Given that she had to swim at super speed, she had a bit of this going on.
  • Super-Toughness: To survive those ocean pressures, don't ya know.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: After being brought back from the dead, she becomes a misanthrope who hates humans.
  • The Woobie: Poor kid just suffered endlessly and didn't deserve any of it.

    Puck

Eugene Milton Judd / Puck

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/5711373_img_9899.jpg

Notable Aliases: Belmont, Gene Judd, Geno

Nationality: Canadian

Species: Human mutate

First Appearance: Alpha Flight #1 (May, 1983)

"When I was eight, I hunted my first bear. Big grizzly. That was 1922, in the Yukon, and he kept us through a cold winter. In Spain, I fought bulls and fascists — and I let the bulls live. In Nepal, I hunted the Tiger God and killed all fear in me. I've fought queens of dreams and the world's secret master. I've fought demons in hell and stolen their thrones — and those thrones haven't bound me. And it all comes back to one thing. I was eight, full of bear meat and adventure — and I made a vow, Mr. Creel. I vowed I would live an interesting life. I think I've done okay so far, eh?"

Eugene Judd was, at first, an ex-military man with dwarfism who possessed incredible natural agility and acrobatic skills. He was briefly a member of Beta Flight, before being moved up to Alpha Flight. In later issues of Alpha Flight, it was retconned that Puck was originally a very tall man and was actually quite old, but that he had been made short by an encounter with an evil, mystical being. Even later still, Puck was modified on the genetic level and given true blue superpowers.

  • All Love Is Unrequited: Puck had a long-standing crush on Heather Hudson, but never really told her so, though she did suspect. Either way, she didn't feel the same about him.
  • Badass Boast:
When I was eight, I hunted my first bear. Big grizzly. That was 1922, in the Yukon, and he kept us through a cold winter. In Spain, I fought bulls and fascists—and I let the bulls live. In Nepal, I hunted the tiger god and killed all fear in me. I've fought queens of dreams and the world's secret master. I've fought demons in Hell and stolen their thrones—and those thrones haven't bound me. And it all comes back to one thing. I was eight, full of bear meat and adventure—and I made a vow, Mr. Creel. I vowed I would live an interesting life. I think I've done okay so far, eh?
    • He gets another one a few issues later, smashing a brain in a jar.
When you get [to Hell], tell them Puck sent you. They know me down there.
  • Badass Normal: For a long time, Puck was just a guy who did cartwheels and kicks. He later got true superpowers.
  • Bouncing Battler: Basically what Puck's fighting style amounted to.
  • Demonic Possession: Was possessed by a demonic force for quite some time, which caused him intense pain and retarded his aging.
  • Depending on the Writer: His nickname's origin. He lampshades it eventually: "Sometimes it's Shakespeare, sometimes it's hockey."
  • Gentle Giant: In his original, pre-dwarfism/mystically affected body, Puck was this.
  • Hell Has New Management: The Wolverine story "Wolverine in Hell" reveals he went to Hell after Alpha Flight was massacred in New Avengers. In Fear Itself, it's revealed in his return to the land of the landing that between Logan's trip and Puck's return that Eugene overthrew Ba'al.
  • The Mole: In Alpha Flight (2023), he Shaman, Snowbird, and Guardian are pretending to cooperate with Orchis and the Canadian government in their campaign against mutants when in actuality they are working with Northstar’s resistance effort.
  • Odd Friendship: He manages to strike up a pretty good relationship with Absorbing Man and Titania, even offering them a job.
  • Older Than They Look: Puck is about 70 years old, but looks far younger due to various factors both mystical and otherwise.
  • Omniglot: He knows at least seventeen different languages.
  • Pintsized Powerhouse: Him being 3 and a half feet tall doesn't stop him from kicking ass.
  • Retcon: Probably the most obvious case in Alpha Flight's history, though it was due to a misunderstanding between one writer and another.
  • Super-Strength: Puck can lift around 10 tons.
  • Super-Toughness: Puck has skin akin to compressed rubber, like his namesake.

    Vindicator

Heather McNeil Hudson / Vindicator

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/5725830_img_0938.jpg

Notable Aliases: Guardian

Nationality: Canadian

Species: Human

First Appearance: X-Men #139 (August, 1980)

"I... hadn't even thought of it like that. But... But you're right, both of you. If Alpha Flight is going to survive it needs a leader... For Mac... For the dream... I will be that leader!"

Heather McNeil Hudson was the wife of James Hudson, founder of Alpha Flight, as well as his secretary. As such, she was a supporting character for the team for some time. After her husband's "death" she became the leader of the team, mostly out of pity from the remaining members. Not wanting to be a burden, she took a super suit identical to the one her husband had worn from a villain and used it to become Vindicator, superpowered leader of Alpha Flight. She remained in this role until her husband's return some years later.

  • Action Girl: Wasn't one at first, but all it took was a little determination on her part (and a super suit) to become one.
  • All Love Is Unrequited: Not so much for her, but she tends to be this for other people, namely Wolverine and Puck.
  • Betty and Veronica: The wholesome and modest Betty to Lilian's sultry and arrogant Veronica.
  • Body Horror: Was subjected to this by Lionel Jeffries' flesh shaping power. It scared her so much that it made her distrust him in all of their subsequent interactions.
  • Clothes Make the Superman: Wears an electromagnetically powered suit and later a geothermal powered suit.
  • Cool Shades: Wore them originally to help correct her eyesight (she normally needed glasses), but after her laser surgery, they just looked cool. She briefly went without them when she first got the geothermal suit, but re-adopted them for a more practical purpose - keeping the wind out of her eyes, since the suit didn't have the same protective force field as the original model.
  • Flight: Heather's suit lets her defy gravity.
  • Hand Blast: Like her husband before her, Heather could fire these while wearing her suit.
  • Happily Married: To James, though she had some doubts about him after his "death."
  • I Did What I Had to Do: A LOT of her decisions as the leader of Alpha Flight were justified this way, such as the mercy kill of Snowbird.
  • Love Makes You Evil: In the 2011 Alpha Flight comic, she has her daughter Claire taken from her because the superhero life was too dangerous; unable to accept this, she sides with the Master of the World to take over Canada, and she even went as far as to kill her cousins, who'd had custody of Claire. YMMV on whether it was Mind Control from the Master or genuine rage at the world, but by the end of the story, on the Master's defeat she takes Claire and goes on the run as a fugitive.
  • Mercy Kill: Dealt one out to Snowbird, though she was torn up about it both before and after.
  • Nigh-Invulnerability: Heather's personal force field essentially gave her this.
  • No-Sell: Heather's force field let her do this against Lady Deathstrike's sword, which was matched against Wolverine's Adamantium claws. For bonus points, she didn't even know it wouldn't have cut her in half.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: Gets this in the 2011 Alpha Flight comic.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Had this going with Diamond Lil, since they both loved Madison Jeffries at the time and because she had been involved in the supposed death of her husband.

    Talisman

Elizabeth Twoyoungmen / Talisman

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/7034297_talisman.jpg

Notable Aliases: Princess, "Pocahontas"

Nationality: Canadian

Species: Human

First Appearance: Alpha Flight #5 (September, 1983)

""My friends better be alright, or I'll kill you! In fact, I'm coming over right now! If you're still there I'll kill you anyway!""

The daughter of Shaman, Elizabeth became distant from her father after he failed to save her mother from death. As an adult, she became an archaeology student, but joined Alpha Flight after putting on a magical circlet that gives her control over spirits.

  • Action Girl: She's a female superhero, sooo...
  • Arch-Enemy: The Dreamqueen, Nightmare's daughter, is a personal foe of hers.
  • Childhood Friends: With Heather, who was her babysitter when they were growing up in Calgary.
  • Clingy Macguffin: Talisman's circlet of power. If she tries to pull it off of her head, it gives her a blindly painful headache. Averted when a creature of decay was able to rip it off.
  • Fate Worse than Death: Being sucked into the psychedelic realm of her father's medicine pouch. Luckily, the Beyonder happened to be passing by and saved her.
  • Hand Blast: She can command the spirits to let her do this.
  • Magical Native American: She's part of Canada's native population and possesses the magical power to control spirits.
  • Navel-Deep Neckline: Her original outfit had a pretty long v-line. Subsequent outfits were more modest.
  • One-Steve Limit: Shares codename with the Australian hero from the Contest of Champions. The distance means it's very unlikely they'll get mixed up.
  • Smug Super: Was this HARDCORE after being returned to Earth by the Beyonder. She taunted Alpha Flight, particularly her father, with her power. Ultimately, it bit her in the butt.
  • You Can't Fight Fate: Ultimately proved true, since she repeatedly became Talisman despite not wanting to.

    Box

Roger Bochs / Box

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/4843604_box_1.jpg

Notable Aliases: Omega

Nationality: Canadian

Species: Human

First Appearance: Alpha Flight #1 (May, 1983)

"Liars! Traitors! I'll kill you for doing this to me! I'll destroy you all! Starting with the tramp that led me on. Do you hear me, Aurora?!"

A Beta Flight recruit, robotics genius Roger Bochs was a paraplegic after his legs were cut off at the knee, but created a robotic body that he could control with a helmet and was later improved to allow him to merge with it completely. Bochs originally joined Omega Flight, an evil version of Alpha Flight, but as a traitor. He later joined Alpha Flight after helping them save the soul of Walter Langkowski, whose physical body had died. He remained a member of the team until his death.

  • Bodyof Bodies: Became a horrible mixture of himself, Omega, and parts of corpses shortly before his death.
  • Cyborg: Essentially what he became after merging with his Box robot to control it from within.
  • Flight: Could do this while merged with the Box robot's boot jets.
  • I Have You Now, My Pretty: Pulled with with his then girlfriend Aurora after his sanity slippage made him teeter over the edge.
  • Nigh-Invulnerability: Not just because the Box robot was hard to damage but also because, if it was damaged, Roger could just repair it.
  • Sanity Slippage: Implied to be a mixture of his repeated fusions with the Box robot and the manipulations of Omega.
  • Super-Strength: Not as powerful as Sasquatch, but dang powerful when merged with his robotic body.
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: Yep, really. After having his body restored by Omega, he was ripped and sexy as all get out.

    Box II

Madison Jeffries / Box II

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/box_marvel_comics_jeffries_alpha_flight.jpg

Notable Aliases: Box, Gemini, Jack-in-the-Box, Mad Jeff, Neurotic-Machine-Canuck, Redneck, Laforge, Insane Tech-Guy

Nationality: Canadian

Species: Human mutant

First Appearance: Alpha Flight #1 (May, 1983)

"I can create. That's my gift. I can make anything I can imagine. Out of metal. Glass. You name it. With people, I can't create. I just destroy. I betray. I want to be with her. But I know I can never be. I know that if I'm with her, she'll just be hurt again. ... And she was dead an hour later. Four days after that, I put her in a glass box. The separation is better for us."

Originally a member of Gamma Flight, the Canadian Government's "C-Squad" of heroes, he later graduated to Beta Flight and then joined Alpha Flight first as a supporting character and then as a full member. Madison is a mutant with the power to telekinetically control the materials that make up machines such as glass, metal, plastic, etc.

  • Almighty Janitor: Comparatively. Out of all the X-Club members he is the least scientifically minded and is often assigned the grunt-work of building and repairing. However, he's proven multiple times that he is more than capable of creating near-impossible machinery from scratch, as well as kick ass whenever he wants to.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: He's a really sweet guy. Just don't threaten someone he cares about.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Luckily not anymore. However, just prior to joining the X-Club he spent two years brainwashed into building and operating a mutant death-camp. This did not do wonders for his mental health.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Comes off as strange because of his habits of talking to machines, as well as being somewhat introverted. Worsened in recent years to due to the death of his wife.
  • Crusading Widower: After the death of Lillian, he becomes this, offering her a proper burial, crystal coffin and all, and swearing to go on for her sake.
  • Extra-ore-dinary: Notably he can manipulate glass and plastic in addition to metal.
  • Flight: With boot jets, shapeshifted wings, or by becoming a star ship.
  • Fusion Dance: He can fuse with his armor, with the caveat that his control over machines becomes limited to it so long as he remains fused and there's a time limit before the fusion is permanent.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: The other major aspect of his powers is intuitive invention of any device to solve any problem he can think of. It helps that he can also telekinetically manipulate any inorganic material like plastic, glass and metal to build his machines from. He once built an entire boat just from traces of plastic in the ocean.
  • Happily Married: To Diamond Lil, though he almost married Heather Hudson.
  • Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: Inverted with the towering wife Diamond Lil and the average-height Madison Jeffries.
  • Legacy Character: As his name implies, he was one for his friend Roger Bochs.
  • Mind over Matter: Unique in that he could only control glass, metal, and plastic. But when you're a badass engineer, well, that makes for one serious power.
  • Mercy Kill: A twofer, since he killed both his brother Lionel and his friend Roger Bochs, who were fused together as the insane Omega at the time.
  • Nigh-Invulnerability: Like his predecessor, though to an even greater degree given his mutant powers.
  • No Social Skills: To a lesser agree, but still noticeable. An unfortunate side-effect of being brainwashed, locking himself away in the Yukon, and having a habit of talking to his machines more often than people.
  • One-Robot Army: Plenty capable of this though it was more common in his Alpha Flight days.
  • Papa Wolf: Was this for Purple Girl/Persuasion, who was about 14 when she joined the team.
  • Retired Badass: Was this before recruited to join the X-Club. Still arguably semi-retired considering what he used to do in Alpha Flight.
  • Robosexual: He eventually entered a relationship with Danger; before that he had a minor disagreement with Karma as to what would qualify a robotic leg as "sexy".
  • Shell-Shocked Veteran: Shows shades of this on occasion.
  • Super-Strength: To an even greater extent than the original, since he had modified the Box robot. He was as strong as the Thing in the 80s.
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: Well, Diamond Lil and Heather Hudson sure thought so.
  • Technopath: One of his main abilities is the ability to communicate with machines.
  • Transforming Mecha: When merged with the Boxbot. Notably, due to his powers he is able to manipulate the robot to take any form he can imagine to the point that it borders on Shapeshifting.
  • Transhumanism: In Sabretooth's solo in the Krakoa Age, he manifests at one point as a cloud of microplastics and says he feels more like himself than he does in his flesh and blood body.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: Could do this by using his power to change the shape of his robotic armor, though he couldn't do so while he was fused with it.

    Diamond Lil

Lillian Crawley Jeffries / Diamond Lil

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/77469_32708_diamond_lil.jpg

Notable Aliases: "Creepy" Crawley

Nationality: Canadian

Species: Human mutant

First Appearance: Alpha Flight #1 (May, 1983)

"Pretty gutsy move — Makin' fun of a gal whose arms are wrapped so close the family jewels, Juddsie."

Like her husband Madison, Lillian "Diamond Lil" Crawley-Jeffries was a mutant. Her power generated a "bio-aura" that made her nigh-invulnerable. While initially part of the villainous Omega Flight, circumstances forced to work with and eventually become a member of Alpha Flight.

  • Absurdly Sharp Claws: After a fashion. Since Lil's nails were permeated by her bio-aura, they were as invulnerable as the rest of her and thus razor sharp.
  • Action Girl: A brawler at heart, Lil's invulnerability and brash nature meant she NEVER backed down from a fight.
  • Amazonian Beauty: Lillian is very athletic and aptly jacked as a female brawler, complete with the unusual height and bad temper. But she's also quite attractive, especially when she puts the odd effort to wear a pretty gown and do her hair properly.
  • Betty and Veronica: With Heather Hudson/Vindicator. She's the Veronica being assertive and sultry compared to a more modest Heather.
  • The Big Guy: In a different way than her husband or Sasquatch. She was so difficult to hurt that foes had a hard time dealing with her effectively before she could beat them down.
  • Easily Forgiven: Not by Heather Hudson, but by James Hudson, who easily accepted her after she apologized for having a part in his death. This went a long way toward her become a legitimately heroic character, instead of being one out of convenience.
  • Happily Married: To Madison Jeffries.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: Because she's so confident in her invulnerability, Lillian often rushes head on into fights, which can backfire. And during the Necrosha crossover, it ended up being her demise against Lois London/Mortis, whose Death Touch powers can disintegrate and/or disrupt anything, including Lil's bio-aura. It only took one casual touch from Mortis to slay Lilian, much to everyone's surprise.
  • Most Common Superpower: As a female comic character of tremendous height, she definitely had this going on.
  • Nigh-Invulnerable: As stated above, she couldn't be hurt by much and her power was so effective that she couldn't even be screened for breast cancer properly.
  • One Head Taller: Towards her lover Madison Jeffries. She's indeed taller than him due to her being exceptionally tall.
  • Smug Super: A big problem for everyone who acquaints with her is that she knows all too well that she's almost invulnerable. Consequently, she has a tendency to strut around and a clear penchant for starting shit just so she can show off her powers.
  • Statuesque Stunner: Lil is incredibly tall, standing at a height of 6'4''.
  • The Topic of Cancer: Lil found that she had a lump on her breast, but her powers made it impossible to tell what it was. A bit of storyline and a few questionable moral decisions on her part later, it turned out to be something benign.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Had this going with Heather Hudson.

    Windshear

Colin "Colly" Ashworth Hume / Windshear

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/5382428_death_of_wolverine_logan_legacy_002_2014_digital_nahga_empire_019.jpg

Notable Aliases: Chinook

Nationality: Canadian

Species: Human mutant

First Appearance: Alpha Flight #87 (June, 1990)

"Chinook is a type of wind not a— It doesn't matter. I tried to get out of it. I did. But I still wanted to... leave something behind. Thought I'd make art. Touch people with beauty. But there was something about my time as Wind-Shear. The look on the faces of people when I arrived. The feeling of being... bigger. I did... questionable things while I worked for Roxxon. But that didn't matter when I put on the mask. That "silly costume" makes me a symbol, not a man. Those "bright colors" can't be stained by past mistakes and regret. Those colors are a symbol, X-23, for the most uncomplicated, most untainted elements of what truly lies in our souls. In an age of mistrust and divisiveness, we need a few things that are just bloody simple and pure."

Colin Ashworth Hume, also known as Windshear of Alpha Flight, is a mutant with the power to manipulate hard-air molecules. He was depowered after M-Day.

  • Blow You Away: Colin Hume had the mutant ability to turn the surrounding air into "hard air". He could manipulate it into various shapes and forms depending on what he wishes to use it for.
  • Deflector Shields: Windshear could use his "hard-air" defensively. He could create huge hard-air screens to block incoming attacks.
  • Enhanced Punch: Colin could manipulate the hard-air in his hand in order to deliver a very damaging punch. When used on an alien during the Infinity Crusade, the alien's battle armor, flesh and tissue liquefied when it was struck by it.
  • Flight: Windshear's armor has electrically powered Turbojets built into the armor enable Windshear to better control his projection of "hard-air" molecules from his gauntlets and propulsive force from his boots and allows him to fly at subsonic speeds. Later, his armor was modified when he joined Alpha Flight and was capable of reaching Mach 1.
  • Hand Blast: Windshear had the ability to project streams of "hard-air" molecules from his hands as concussive force. He was able to control the strength of the blasts.
  • Having a Blast: Colin could solidify all the air around him, causing a hard-air explosion capable of taking down multiple opponents depending on their range. When first used,he knocked out four men with it.
  • Powered Armor: As Windshear, Hume wore a battlesuit developed for him by Roxxon Oil technicians to fully harness his power.

  • Kick the Dog: He is very abusive with his brother Flex, taking advantage of his shy nature.
