Like Perón, a century before
"Rosas" is a comic book Bio Pic about the Argentine dictator Juan Manuel de Rosas, who ruled during a great part of the Argentine Civil War.

Tropes

  • A Father to His Men: Juan Manuel de Rosas was not born a gaucho, but took this role with them to earn their trust and support.
  • Cavalry Betrayal: The British seized the Falkland Islands, but Rivero started a riot and liberated the islands. He called for reinforcements from Buenos Aires, but it was of no use: the ships that arrived were British reinforcements.
  • Defector from Decadence: Rosas called to elections in his second term, so that it was made clear that he had absolute support from the population. He won by 9713 to 8 votes (yes, that was not a typo, nor an artistic license). A man shows up, interrupt the TV news anchor (yes, that is an artistic license) and says "I, Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, did not vote him".
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: The cover shows Rosas addressing the people and making gestures with his hands, similar to those of Juan Domingo Perón.
  • False Flag Operation: Rosas orders to kill fellow federal Facundo Quiroga, and then returns to the government by leading the protests against the "savage unitarians" that killed Quiroga. Note that, although the comic explicitly states that Rosas ordered to kill him, it is an actual contested issue for real historians.
  • How We Got Here: The story starts after the military coup of Lavalle against Dorrego. Then it makes a jump backwards and narrates the story of Rosas since the Anarchy of 1820.
  • Kick the Dog: One of the Unitarian generals captured a federal, tied him to the mouth of a cannon... and fired it.
  • Peace Conference: Rosas had one with Lavalle, after defeating him. Unfortunately, the unitarians rejected it.
  • The Remnant: The unitarians rejected the peace negotiations between Rosas and Lavalle. Rosas fired the interim governor Viamonte and took the power himself, to deal with them.
  • Translator Buddy: The Argentine agents, who speak Spanish, ordered a group of British whalers to pay taxes for fishing in Argentine territory. The man replied "God will pay you", in English. One of the Argentine agents had to translate it, and the other ordered to detain them.
