Go To

Project Superpowers: Fractured States is a miniseries published by Dynamite Entertainment and written by Ron Marz and Andy Lanning. Though inspired by Dynamite's Project Superpowers franchise, it is set in an alternate reality.

Thirty years into the future, America is falling apart from a combination of environmental disasters and political divisions, and the cruel new bearer of the American Spirit mantle, the Revolutionary, has been making things worse by murdering the surviving patriotic heroes. When amnesiac John Doe wakes up in the ruins of a Florida theme park, he discovers that he has superhuman abilities, and decides to use these powers to try and find the remaining Superpowers and bring them together.

This series contains examples of:

  • Affirmative Action Girl: The Black Terror mantle is now held by multiple people, including a woman named Bobbi.
  • Amnesiac Hero: When the series opens, John Doe wakes up with no memory of who he is or how he ended up in Walter World.
  • Bad Future: America is in rough shape in 2052. Much of the coastline is now underwater because of climate change and a terror attack from the Mad Monk, and what's left of the country is embroiled in a civil war.
  • Canon Welding: The Fractured States miniseries tries to bring elements from Warren Ellis' Blackcross miniseries and the Vol. 2 miniseries into its continuity, despite their deviations from Project Superpowers canon, with Blackcross being revealed as a shadowy organization behind the Revolutionary and Imani Cooper (from Vol. 2) being retconned as not having become the new champion of the American Spirit yet.
  • Cool Ship: The Black Terror organization still makes use of the Galleon, its namesake's old flying ship.
  • Flying Brick: John Doe has demonstrated superhuman strength and durability as well as flight. Whether that is the complete extent of his powers is unrevealed.
  • Monster Clown: The Clown has all the psychopathy of your standard circus-themed supervillain, but also has a superhuman physique... except that the source of his enhanced musculature causes his body to burn out, forcing him to keep transferring his consciousness into clones.
  • Never Found the Body: In this universe, Samson was last seen fighting Dynamic Man in the Cyberstate.
  • Practically Joker: The Clown, old enemy of the Golden Age hero Magno, kept his criminal exploits going by getting into real estate, and has been keeping himself alive by transferring his consciousness into clones.
  • Wretched Hive: Florida has become a zombie-infested swampland thanks to Clownco dumping chemicals into the water. It's called the Zombie State for a reason.
