    The Protagonist

The Protagonist

The player character of the series, their race, gender, appearance, skills, and personality depend on the players decisions.

    Nephew

Nephew

The player character's nephew, who is staying with them if the player selects the Dependent Child challenge during character customization.
  • Adorably Precocious Child: He is an 8-year-old who seems to immediately realize how dangerous the outbreak is and makes strategies to survive and get food and supplies.
  • The Load: Generally averted; although he often wants to follow the Player Character while they are scavenging or fighting zombies, he obeys when he's told to stay hidden instead. He also helps the Player Character with packing up their things, obtaining water from snow and caring for their pet (if they have one).
  • Parental Abandonment: His mother, who is also the Protagonist's sister, died at the start of the outbreak and there has been no mention of his father.

    Jaime

Jaime

A fellow survivor, and friend of the player character at the start of the game.
  • Big Man on Campus: According to his cousin Woody, he became this as a teenager thanks to his impressive physique and charming personality, after having been a fairly introverted kid. The teen player character also has memories of Jaime as a popular senior in high school who protected freshmen like them.
  • Distressed Dude: At one point he needs to be rescued from the bandits and zombies that are keeping him trapped in the high school's roof.
  • Genius Bruiser: Very big and tough-looking, he's also well educated, intelligent and has a wide array of skills and interests.
  • Gentle Giant: He's 6'10" and 400 pounds, and he's also a genuinely kind person who volunteers with the mentally ill, wants to see the best in people and tries to avoid violence whenever possible.
  • Not Distracted by the Sexy: The player character can try to make out with him while he's working on repairing a motor, but he will often gently point out that he's got other priorities at the moment.

    Madison

Madison Milford

Twin sister to Brody Milford, and classmate to the player character if they are a teenager.
  • Alliterative Name: Madison Milford.
  • Crazy-Prepared: She can use firearms competently and hunt wild game, and she is used to camp in the woods thanks to an uncle who wanted her and Brody to be able to survive rough circumstances. Madison thinks that he somehow knew that the Zombie Apocalypse was going to happen.
  • Popularity Food Chain: She comes from the richest family in town, she's attractive and on top of the popularity ladder. She's generally friendly and level-headed.

    Brody

Brody Milford

Twin brother to Madison Milford, and classmate to the player character if they are a teenager.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Like his sister, he spent a lot of free time with his survivalist uncle. He's not as good at hunting as Madison, however.
  • Lovable Jock: Used to be in a Little League team and he's a pretty nice guy.

    Reilly

Reilly

A man who shows up near the end of Part 1, along with his mother. If the player selects the Bank Robber occupation, he is their partner in crime.

    Julianne

Julianne

A hacker and security consultant, she can be encountered by players with the Hacker occupation, or by players who manage to hack a database for information about the Zeta Virus. She is working with the hacker group LEGIT to uncover the truth about the outbreak.
  • Amicable Exes: Downplayed with the hacker player character (if they are interested in women): they have decided that they are Better as Friends and do not seem to harbour resentment toward one another, but Julianne is not a very amicable person in general and they have not kept in contact for a while.
  • Conspiracy Theorist: She and some other members of LEGIT believe that the government developed the virus for some nefarious purpose.
  • Friendless Background: If the player character says to Deter that they are Julianne's friend, he replies "Friend? I didn't know that she had one of those". She mentions her family, but never any friend.
  • Life-or-Limb Decision: Her finger was injured by a zombie and she cut it off to avoid the spreading of the infection.
  • Not Quite Dead: While she did lose her finger, she isn't as dead as Jason believed she is.
  • Stalker with a Crush: Claims that Jason (a prominent member of LEGIT) became this to her after their first date, and forbids the Player Character from giving him any information about her whereabouts.

    Tommy

Thomas "Tommy" Monroe

A fellow survivor, and a neighbor of the player. Can be recruitable.

    Lopez

Christian Lopez

A wounded soldier who stumbles on the Player Character's house on the second day of the apocalypse.
  • Last-Name Basis: His full name is Christian Lopez but everyone calls him by his last name.
  • Secret Character: In order to recruit him, the Player needs to leave their house to either help him or steal from him.

    Jillian

Jillian

A survivor who can show up on the protagonist's doorstep shortly after the outbreak, along with Lyle. Can be recruited.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: She pretends to be a nice woman but she is after your supplies.
  • Freudian Excuse: During the Mother's day dinner, it's subtly implied that Jillian does not or did not have a good relationship with her mother. She's now involved in some...shady activities, to say the least.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Well, she can join your group of survivors if she and Lyle decide to inform the player of their con.
  • May–December Romance: Is in a relationship with Lyle, in spite of the fact that she initially poses as his granddaughter.

    Lyle

Lyle

A blind survivor who can show up on the protagonist's doorstep shortly after the outbreak, along with Jillian.

    Rachel

Rachel

A woman that can be encountered on the third day of the outbreak. She is the cousin of one of the player character's neighbors. Not much is known about her past.
  • Action Girl: Excels at killing zombies.
  • Ambiguously Trained: She is very good with firearms and has an huge arsenal of cool weapons, including katanas and bombs. This causes some member of the group to mistrust her, thinking that she's not who she claims to be. She's later revealed to be a CIA agent
  • Good is Not Nice: She's pretty cold and bossy and often critical of other characters. Some of them find her behaviour off-putting, but she genuinely wants to protect the group.
  • It's All My Fault: She blames herself for not discovering the existence of the Silverthorne militia before and for not having been able to defend the group against them, despite her CIA background.

    Woody

Woody

Jaime's cousin, he is an unkempt man who is skilled in construction.
  • Embarrassing First Name: Seems to strongly dislike his given name, Moses.
  • Killed Off for Real: this can happen in the battle on the hill, where he, Benji, and Bailey can end up dying. This is particularly sad because unlike the other two, the player character has the chance to get to know Woody fairly well before he bites the dust. Jaime will still be upset about it during the pharmacy run mission.
  • Parent with New Paramour: His parents divorced when he was 15, and his mother remarried, was widowed and later had a Native American boyfriend who inspired him to get into the field of anthropology. He describes both of her mother's partners as generally nice but dumb- her husband was bitten by a rattlesnake he was peeing on, and her boyfriend lost three fingers in a blender.
  • Southern-Fried Genius: He's from Arkansas and has a pretty heavy accent, and he's an Anthropology PhD with a Masters in Statistics. He's also skilled in electronics, programming and crafting.

    Dillan

Dillan

Leader of a small group of raiders, he has commandeered a armed military jeep and is using it to rob survivors. He was an orderly at a mental hospital. After the medical and security staff abandoned the facility, he left with several patients, including Driver and Rosie.
  • The Corrupter: Took advantage of Driver and Rosie's mental health problems, their isolation and fear to make them join his gang and do pretty vicious things.

    Driver

Driver

A member of Dillan's gang, and usual driver of their jeep. Can be recruited near the end of Part 1 if he is not killed.

    Rosie

Rosie

A member of Dillan's gang, she typically operates the jeep's .50 caliber machine gun. Can be recruited near the end of Part 1 if she is not killed.
  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: When a large group of zombies corners her while she's chasing the protagonist, she pleads with the protagonist to save her life.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: If she is not rescued, she falls into a horde of zombies and is eaten alive.
  • Dark Action Girl: The most violent member of Dillan's group.
  • Fiery Redhead: She's repeteadly mentioned as having flowing red hair and she's very hot-headed.
  • Rape Is a Special Kind of Evil: Hacker characters can witness Dillan trying to abduct a female survivor with disturbing implications, however Rosie steps in and forces him to let the woman go. She even appears to contemplate killing him after the incident.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Does not seem to hesitate when firing into a group containing teenagers or a child.

    Nathan

Nathan Mubasher

A survivor recruited by Rachel, an affable fellow.

    Benji

Benjimin

A survivor recruited by Rachel. He's a dark-skinned man who hails from England, and is a doctor.
  • Killed Off for Real: Can die during the battle for the hill, if defences aren't adequately strong enough. Even if he survives the hill, he'll be torn apart by wolves with Nathan later on.
  • The Medic

    Bailey

Bailey

A survivor recruited by Rachel. She's a quiet college student from California.
  • Character Tics: She wrings her hands when she's nervous.
  • Killed Off for Real: Can die during the battle for the hill, if defences aren't adequately strong enough; Rachel Mercy Kills her as she's being eaten alive.
  • Shrinking Violet: Generally one of the quieter and less hardened personalities of the group.
