Playable Protagonists

Nathan "Nate" Adams (Keita Amano)

The male protagonist of the games, and the focus character of the anime. Nate is an average boy who, while hunting for insects, frees Whisper, gaining the Yo-Kai Watch and the ghost's loyalty as a gift. Generally seen as unimportant or generic by other characters, which he hates with a passion.

All Love Is Unrequited:
- In the anime, Nate's love is Katie, who he tries to gain the attention of time and time again over the course of the series. Its not that she doesn't like him back, but either through possessions or circumstance, Nate's chances are ruined and he Cannot Spit It Out for some reason.
- In the manga, it is a little different; for example, he goes on a date with a female Yo-Kai in a mini-comic, and is shown chatting up an illusion of Katie at one point.
- Shadowside reveals this ended up becoming averted at some point, with Nate and Katie not just being Happily Married but having two children of their own.
And Then John Was a Zombie: He becomes the Yo-Kai Fuu 2 for a while in the second movie.
Be Careful What You Wish For: In "Dog Days" he thinks that dogs have an easier life than humans and wishes he was a dog. His wish gets granted after opening a mysterious package intended to teach him a lesson.
Berserk Button: Just the word "average" pisses him off if he is in the context.
Beware the Nice Ones: It takes quite a bit for him to get revved enough, but he can whup others good when properly motivated.
Big Good: Is the most frequently appearing human character in the series, making him the one truly recurring human main protagonist.
Bullet Time: He keeps doing this Neo style during the Thronyan episode, to dodge Thornyan's projectile spikes.
Butt-Monkey: Less so than his manga counterpart (who gets pounded on multiple times), but usually if some Yo-Kai is causing trouble, he'll likely end up possessed and/or humiliated by it.
Canon Name: Nate in English, Keita in Japanese
Catchphrase: When summoning Yo-Kai, "Come on out my friend! Calling [Insert Yo-Kai name]! Yo-Kai Medal do your thing!"
Cheaters Never Prosper: In Episode 22, he wishes to stay at home so he can have more time to play a video game. He recruits Duchoo and Coughkoff to make his mom think he's sick. It ends up working, only for Nate to realize he has actually become sick, and as a result his mom deems him too sick to play games and takes his console away.
Color-Coded Characters: He is associated with the color red.
Cosmic Plaything: Sometimes.
Costume Evolution: He started out with a red shirt with a star on it. Later on he switched to a red jacket with an orange version of his original shirt underneath.
Dead Guy Junior: It's mentioned that he was named after his grandfather Nathaniel.
Deadpan Snarker: Can get very sarcastic in response to the antics of Whisper and Jibanyan, as well as other Yo-kai at times.
Death by Falling Over: In the second movie he falls down an open manhole and dies. He's Only Mostly Dead, however and after spending time as a yokai is resurrected by the Time Master abilities of the one who orchestrated his death in the first place.
Forced Transformation: In "Dog Days", he gets turned into a dog by a mysterious package.
Green-Eyed Monster: His worse excuse when it comes to dealing with Yo-kai shenanigans, such as Illoo^note, Duchoo and Coughkoff^note and Ake & Payn^note.
Henpecked Husband: Dreams of being this to a Copperled-possessed Katie in episode 60 of the anime.
The Hero: Seems to be this for the franchise as a whole. He's playable in all the games in the series, is the sole human protagonist in the anime and most of the advertising for the franchise use footage of him defeating or befriending Yo-Kai.
The Hero Dies: In the first segment of the second movie. He gets better.
I Just Want to Be Special: To other characters, he's just so-so, which causes him infinite grief and a desire to impress. Ironically the Yo-Kai Watch grants him a special distinction that sadly, no one but him can see for themselves. Even that gets technically taken away when the subsequent versions of the watch are mass-produced in the anime.
Insane Troll Logic: His and the other boys' belief that girls couldn't fart, which was proven wrong in an episode.
Jerkass Ball: As he is a kid, Nate can have his narcissistic and/or insensitive moments.
- When Jumbelina switches everyone's faces, Nate's face runs away since he went 3 days without washing it. When he ends up with Dandoodle's face, he decides to keep it since it gives him attention from girls.
- In the Christmas episode, he chooses a pair of cleats instead of saving Whisper or Jibanyan and gets called out for it.
KidAnova: In the manga he's gone on a date with a Yo-Kai in a mini-comic, is crushed on a little by a Frostina, chats up a (fake) Katie, and eagerly jumps at the chance to get Katie to like him when a Yo-Kai that makes people fall in love appears. In the anime it's less pronounced, but he still tries to get Katie's attention, only for various Yo-Kai to muck up his efforts
Kid Hero: He's in his fifth year of elementary school (11 years old).
Magnetic Hero: Even though his ludicrously average qualities are pointed out by everyone, they usually note an exceptional talent for befriending yokai.
Nice Guy: He genuinely tries to help and befriend many of the Yo-kai he comes across.
Only Sane Man: Frequently finds himself in this role when forced to put up with the antics of Whisper and Jibanyan.
Out of Focus: If not chosen as the protagonist in the first two games, Nate becomes this, taking Katie's role as the third friend among their quartet (which means his appearances become limited to side-quests and certain story segments).
Paper Fan of Doom: His weapon, which he uses to discipline Whisper and Jibanyan when they step out of line.
Red Is Heroic: He almost always wears a red top, and he's the hero of the series.
Ridiculously Average Guy: A running gag in the anime, which carried over to the sequel games.
- Informed Flaw: While he is pretty average, he isn't nearly as cut and dry as others always say; he has interests, and he has his limits.
- In Yo-Kai Watch Busters: Moon Rabbit Team and the 2nd movie Enma Daioh and the Five Stories, Nate is turned into the Yo-Kai Fuu2 by dying. Fuu2 sounds just like futsuu, the Japanese word for "ordinary". His inspirit ability is a Status-Buff Dispel on enemies as it brings them down to average.
Signature Mon: Nate is associated with Whisper and especially Jibanyan after the second title.
Spear Counterpart: To Katie in the games.
Strong Family Resemblance: His grandmother tells him that he looks just like his grandfather Nathaniel. He was also named after him.
Super Wrist-Gadget: His Yo-Kai Watch.
Took a Level in Jerkass: It's subtle, but over the course of the series Nate has less tendency to try reason with misbehaving Yo-Kai to earn their friendship, and leans more towards beating them up or defeating them to acquire their medals. Ironically, this is pretty much what happens in the games all the time.
Torso with a View: His Yo-Kai form, Fuu 2, has a star shaped hole in his torso. His Soultimate involves firing a laser from it.
Wholesome Crossdresser: In an issue of "Nyanderful Days", he gets inspirited by Dazzabel and starts wearing ball gowns and make-up at school. When he's freed, he's lost a few friends and has no idea what happened.

Katie Forester (Fumika Kodama)

The female protagonist of the first two games. She is Nate's crush in the anime, who while nice, can never seem to figure that angle out. She's also the main character of Yo-kai Watch: Wakuwaku Nyanderful Days, a Shojo Manga centered around her getting the watch instead of Nate similar to the games.

Action Girl: As the female protagonist.
Ascended Extra: An odd example. While Katie was playable in the first 2 games, the one from Nate's world never had a major role in the series. However in Yo-Kai Watch 4 Katie finally gets her very own Yo-Kai Watch and becomes a canon protagonist.
Always Someone Better: Zigagged in episode 67, a dream where she's the watch wielder, as the Yokai she has are rarer than the ones Nate rooms with, but have glaring personality quirks that make them unreliable. Baddinyan is as lazy as Jibanyan and more uncaring, Goldenyan considers every task beneath him, and Shadow Venoct just violently hisses at Whisper. Besides, the fact that she only summoned one yokai before turning to weaponize Whisper rather hints that she's not as successful at befriending a wide variety of yokai as Nate was.
And Then John Was a Zombie: She becomes the Yo-Kai Mifuu in Yo-Kai Watch 3: Sukiyaki.
Butt-Monkey: She's been the victim of several Yo-kai, including one that triggers flatulence.
Canon Name: Katie in English, Fumika (though she's usually called "Fumi-chan") in Japanese. Interestingly, her English name is an anagram of "Keita", Nate's Japanese name.
Catchphrase: Same as Nate's when summoning Yo-Kai: "Come on out my friend! Calling [Insert Yo-Kai name]! Yo-Kai Medal do your thing!"
Color-Coded Characters: She is associated with white and pink.
Costume Evolution: Originally wore a white jacket but switched to a pink jacket later in the anime. Yo-Kai Watch 3 also depicts her in a pink jacket.
Cutting Off the Branches: Yo-Kai Watch 3 outright doesn't include her as the protagonist, instead Hailey is the female playable character. The third game canonized Nate over her. As frustrating as some people find it, it probably has to do with establishing who truly invented the Yo-Kai Watch, as it can't be both Nathaniel and Kenny unless they opted for an Alternate Universe depending on the protagonist.
A Day in the Limelight: Episode 67 of the anime had a "What-If" scenario where she was the one who found Whisper and possessed the Yo-Kai Watch, effectively portraying the female choice in the games. She is shown to be less competent than Nate, for despite having acquired rarer forms of some of Nate's yo-kai (such as Baddinyan and Goldenyan) they are unreliable. If she has any other Yo-kai she either didn't think to summon them or they were unreliable too. She's generally nicer to Whisper, asking after his well-being and trying to help him improve by memorizing the Yo-Kai wiki info.
Distaff Counterpart: She actually gets her own story and a bunch of different dialogue if used as the player character, including living in a different house, which is much more than most games that let you choose your gender. Players also noticed that while Nate is capable of running for longer, Katie's running speed is noticeably faster.
Dude Magnet: Kind of. In the show, Nate's head over heels for her of course, as is Kyubi. In the games, Nate shows a tiny bit of interest, while Eddie of all people gets the much more blatant affection hinting. And then there's the Door of Whimsy where, if Nate's the protagonist, you enter an illusion of every one of his male classmates going ga-ga for her, to her chagrin.
Generic Girl: In the show, she usually doesn't get much characterization outside of being a Nice Girl, occasionally the show shows her own problems, but anything else about her is usually a Yo-Kai's fault, or her just being Innocently Insensitive. In the games,if chosen to be the player character, she's straight-laced and usually willing to deal with problems head-on.
Girly Run: Her run/sprint cycle in the game, arms outward and everything.
Innocently Insensitive: In episode 1, she states that an average-sized beetle clearly suits Nate, who utterly despises that description, and is shocked and hurt that she'd say it (She also calls Nate average and boring in her version of the manga and means it, saying girls want excitement. When Whisper mentions Yo-Kai mostly inspirit the simple-minded, Katie deliberately looks at Nate). Most of the other times she's insensitive, it's usually because a Yo-Kai is influencing her in some way.
- Continues in Nyanderful Days. During an event where, thanks to Baku, Katie was capable of seeing into Nate's dreams, she saw how much being called 'average' bothered him and she was noticeably unaware of her calling him that not helping matters.
Kid Hero: In the games and Nyanderful Days.
Magical Accessory: In the games and Nyanderful Days, she actually wears the titular watch as a pendant instead of on her wrist. When Kenny gives her the Yo-Kai Watch Model Zero in Yo-Kai Watch 2, she wears that on her wrist similar to Nate.
Nice Girl: Despite everyone else viewing Nate's average-ness negatively, she likes that about him.
Not So Above It All: Out of all of the girls in Nate's class, she's the one most likely to join in on the boys' antics. She also has some moments of this sort in the games, which contrast with her usual Straight Man tendencies. Often they involve a paper fan and an orange cat (although since the second game clearly takes influence from the anime, it's likely that this scene was made more with Nate in mind) soaring through the air with the grace of an eagle.
Oblivious to Love:
- A subtle version of this happens at the beginning of Yo-Kai Watch 2: if you're playing as Nate, when he meets with Katie for the first time in the game, he blushes while greeting her. Meanwhile, Katie's version of the events doesn't include any blushing from either of them.
- Exaggerated in the show. Not only do all the boys in her class pine for her, but in certain episodes all three of her guy friends have all shown signs of being attracted to her romantically. This extends to even certain Yo-Kai having the hots for her such as Kyubi, who was actively trying to make her fall in love with him. Somehow, Katie fails to notice any of this.
- Also in the games to some extent. Kyubi's attempts to flirt with her in 2 sail clean over her head at all points where they interact in that game.
One of the Guys: In the games and the anime's English dub. She's perfectly comfortable around Nate, Eddie and Bear. And in the first game, at least, Eddie's the only one who's had anything approaching romantic tension with her among the crew.
Out of Focus: She seems to disappear from the middle of season 1 to the start of season 2. Season 2 also marks the appearance of the female protagonist of Yo-kai Watch 3, Hailey Anne. In the games, Nate seems to have surpassed her as the de facto canon protagonist as she isn't playable in Yo-kai Watch 3. Which means as far as the canon's concerned, Nathaniel Adams created the Yo-Kai Watch Model Zero, not Kenny Forester. In Yo-kai Watch 3 Sukiyaki Katie is playable again, however Nate is still the main playable character. Katie can only be played in a section of the game.
Paper Fan of Doom: Can pull this one out when her primary yokai buddies are getting a little too out of control, pulling it from Hammerspace no less. It's also her melee weapon as a playable character in Yokai Watch 4.
Pink Means Feminine: Her Yo-Kai Watch is pink, her raincoat is pink and she wears a pink ribbon in her hair. The rest of her outfit is mostly white, although in the anime she eventually starts wearing a different jacket that's, you guessed it, pink. This also extends to the color of the interface she has in the games, though Yo-Kai Watch 2 allows you to change the color of the interface. Even Katie's Yo-kai form is pink.
Promoted to Opening Titles: Appears alongside Nate summoning Yo-Kai in the intro movies for all versions of Yo-Kai Watch 2.
Promoted to Love Interest: In the first game it's implied Eddie may like Katie (or the other way around), while Katie and Nate are just friends, and not particularly close ones either. The anime made Nate crush on Katie with the games following the anime's lead.
Put on a Bus: In the third game since Nate's story involves him traveling to America. Outside of optional dialogue, Hailey never meets her either.
- The Bus Came Back: Confirmed to be playable in Yo-kai Watch 4.
Signature Mon: Official artwork and marketing associates Katie with Komasan in order to contrast with Nate and Jibanyan. However, as a player character, Katie is more associated with Whisper and Jibanyan than Komasan.
Straight Man: Her personality in the games. Unlike Nate (who tends to just get swept up in things) she generally tries to stay serious in the face of all the yo-kai insanity invading her life (and living in her bedroom), and even has a "what." face◊ when things get particularly ridiculous. Which, in this world, is pretty often.
Tomboy:
- Somewhat more prominent in the games, but true to various degrees in both media. She is the only girl in a circle of otherwise guy friends, she enjoys the same things as the boys of the group do (such as catching bugs)((this is only true in the English dub, she says something different in the Japanese anime)) say, and she's very much one of the gang. Her outfit is also, pink ribbon and heart aside, fairly gender-neutral at least, and it's definitely put together with active play in mind first and foremost. She's also shown as being fairly close with Alex, who is similarly tomboyish, but much more obviously so. When she's the actual game protagonist, all these tendencies are more clear.
- This gets some special attention when she goes back in time in 2 - while her tomboyish traits and clothes aren't especially remarkable in the 21st century, in the mid-20th attention gets drawn to her appearance.

Hailey Anne Thomas (Inaho Misora)

The new girl in town who is a major sci-fi geek. She's led to the new Yo-Kai Watch U Prototype by USApyon as part of his attempts to help out his old friend Dr. Hughley.

Arbitrary Skepticism: In the events of 4, she thinks time travel is too science fiction to be real in spite of everything else that she has experienced. At the time, Nate decided it was not worth trying to convince her otherwise because of one of the Watch users from the future fading out of existence.
Bat Deduction: She comes to conclusions by overhearing conversations and forming solutions based on what they say. For example, she overhears someone say "It’s cool" and in her head, it turns into "It’s school" which makes her decide the Yo-kai they’re looking for must be at a school. Hilariously, her answers are always right despite making no logical sense.
Catchphrase: It depends on the language of the localisation. Her original Japanese catchphrase "Chiwatchi!" and gesture is a reference to Ultraman, and was translated to "Watch up!" in Wibble Wobble. In English, her catchphrase in the anime is "Hold the phone!" and in the game it's "Psych!"
Cuteness Overload: She just cannot stand the extreme cuteness of Blizzaria.
Demoted to Extra:
- She has a minimal amount of screentime in the third movie. She just has a live action scene playing with her chemistry set.
- Her role in Yo-Kai Watch 4 is far smaller than it was in Yo-Kai Watch 3. In the later, she was the Deuteragonist and was a fully playable character with her own quests like Nate. In Yo-Kai Watch 4 however, she's no longer playable and only has some screentime helping in a few quests and teaming up with Katie after she gets a Yo-Kai Watch.
Early-Bird Cameo: Appeared in Wibble Wobble to promote Yo-Kai Watch 3.
Genki Girl: She's incredibly cheerful and full of energy.
Hero of Another Story:
- She attends Nate's school but has yet to truly meet him outside of the intro and credits, always just passing him. Meanwhile, she's been having her own Yo-kai adventures with USApyon.
- However, she has already seem to have met him in the 2nd movie, but it is unclear whether or not the two will meet in the anime since the five stories are largely disconnected from each other.
- #119 and 120 avert this. They both compete in the Yo-Kai Grand Prix and battle each other for first place in the former. The latter has Jibanyan ask them for help involving Snottle. While Nate doesn't notice Hailey or USApyon, they at least see him interacting with Snottle.
Innocently Insensitive/What the Hell, Hero?: She definitely has at least one of these moments in the Detective Agency segments once Phantom Thief Kopin arrives. Episode 101 deconstructs it to Black Comedy-levels when Kopin steals Peckpocket's feathers and Hailey tries to cook her in various ways.
Kid Hero: Alongside with Nate.
Lethal Chef: Attempts to make Valentine's chocolate for a celebrity crush in episode 107. Key word: Attempts.
Once per Episode: Pressing poor USApyon's Berserk Button until he snaps by any means. Good thing he's a yo-kai, otherwise Hailey's setting him off would give him high-blood pressure.
Out of Focus: She suffers this badly after Yo-Kai Watch 3 and the end of the original anime. Once Shadowside started airing, she and Usapyon weren't even mentioned or seen once and it didn't change with the reboot of the original series. She also gets a very small role in Yo-Kai Watch 4 where she loses a lot to screentime in favor of Katie becoming a protagonist.
Otaku: Her glasses and interest in space and sci-fi.
Promoted to Playable: In Yo-Kai Watch 3 Hailey replaces Katie as the female playable character.
Punny Name: Her English name sounds like alien. Her first name can also be a reference to Halley's Comet. Both referencing her love of space.
Signature Mon: Hailey Anne's signature yo-kai is USApyon.
Small Role, Big Impact: Despite her lack of screentime in the third movie, USApyon uses a potion she created to power up Robonyan F.

NPC Protagonists

Buck Hazeltine

Nate's best friend in BBQ. He can also see Yo-kai, but he believes that they're aliens he can see thanks to the mysterious UFO stone he found the day before Nate moved in. He loves adventure and anything mysterious, and drags Nate all over BBQ hunting down and trying to solve various mysteries, effectively serving as his guide.

Adapted Out: Buck doesn't appear in the anime at all, Jerry serving instead as the token (much worse) American.
Blatant Lies: He tells Blunder and Folly that he Nate were on a stroll to avoid revealing the location of his secret base to them.
Cool Shades: He wears a nice pair of black sunglasses.
Deuteragonist: Is this in Yo-kai Watch 3, specifically in Nate’s plot line.
Dynamic Entry: His first spoken line was for everyone to "Git out the way!" as he spectacularly crashes his bike. The subsequent fall gets enough air time for him to do a flip and everything!
Expy: Apparently he's based off Tom Sawyer, the main character from The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain.
Fiery Redhead: Not so much on the temper (although Bob did chide him to not throw hissy fits) but he fits the outgoing and outspoken charcateristics to a T. And, of course, he has the hair.
I See Dead People: He can see Yo-kai too, and that's what kickstarts his friendship with Nate.
I See Them, Too: Nate got quite the surprise when Buck described Whisper and Jibanyan to him. To be fair, Buck was also astonished about Nate being able see them, so it was a surprising affair for everyone involved.
Forgotten First Meeting: Not forgotten, but the fact Buck was kind of a jerk to Nate when they first met is kind of ignored by everyone. And how Buck was seen spying on Nate before his official introduction isn't explained either.
Genki Guy: Has shades of this. Doesn't know where Nate's house is? Easy peasy, he'll just knock into everyone's house until he finds it! He has also run off in excitement, leaving Nate behind, many, many times (this is lampshaded by Nate and Jibanyan)
Friendship Moment: After they resolve the Den of Djinn mystery, Buck reminisces about all the fun and exciting things he did with Nate, and officially declares them best buds.
Non-Action Guy: Unlike Nate or Hailey he never does get a Yo-Kai Watch so he's not able to assist during battles.
Put on a Bus: Due to BBQ not being in the setting of Yo-Kai Watch 4, he unfortunately couldn't play any role in the game.
Secretly Wealthy: There are hints to this before the big reveal, but I don't think anyone expected for him to live in a manor situated on their very own island!
Signature Laugh: "Hyuk hyuk hyuk!"
The Only One I Trust: A lighter and softer example of this trope, Nate is the only one Buck trusts with knowing the existence of his secret base.
Youthful Freckles: He's 11 and as a scatter of freckles over his nose.

Nathaniel Adams (Keizou Amano)/Kenny Forester (Fumiaki Kodama)

Nathaniel is voiced by: Romi Park (Japanese), Meyer deLeeuw (English)

Kenny is voiced by: Nana Kouno (Japanese)

Nathaniel is Nate's grandfather, Kenny is Katie's. The Anime of the Game follows Nate, so Nathaniel appears in The Movie based on the second game and plays a major role.

Aloof Ally:
- Let's just say he doesn't take too kindly to Nate and is very reluctant to help Nate when Jibanyan is kidnapped by the Wicked tribe Yo-kai.
- He also refused to be friends with anyone (though not without reason) whether they're human or Yo-kai.
Batter Up!: In the first movie, fighting Wicked tribe alone, he uses a wooden post carved into a bat coated in chili paste.
Catchphrase: "Moxie!"
Defrosting Ice King: He becomes a lot nicer at the end of the movie.
Happily Married: With Nate's grandma.
Identical Grandson: Although compared to most examples, there are some noticeable differences between them like Nathaniel being tan.
Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Even with his initial refusal to have friends, he was quite gentle with Nate's grandma and he was willing to help innocent Yo-kai in need of help, which is why many Yo-kai wanted be friends with him in the first place.
Living Shadow: His yokai form is a Super-Deformed black silhouette with yellow eyes wearing a cape.
My Greatest Failure: When his friend was being bullied by a couple of thugs (actually possessed by Kin and Gin), he was called out on being a coward and said friend ditched him.
Posthumous Character: He died before Nate was born. As a twist on the trope, in the present day, he's now a Yo-kai of the Brave tribe named Moximous N, living happily with his wife.
Touched by Vorlons: Flavor text for his yokai form implies becoming one is somehow related to befriending thousands of them.

In the game Yo-Kai Watch 2, meanwhile, Nathaniel and Kenny play a rather different, and much more important, role: you meet them as kids when you travel 60 years into the past. Hovernyan recruits you to assist your own grandfather, and upon going back in time you must help your respective granddad build the Yo-Kai Watch Model Zero and fight back the Wicked Yo-kai who are threatening both Harrisville and the greater Springdale area. Though the adventure doesn't quite end there...

Nathaniel and Kenny are exclusive to one another, depending on who the player chooses as their protagonist. They do largely share a story and character traits with each other, however, and the tropes below apply to both of them unless specifically noted.

Adapted Out: Neither Kenny or Kelly appear in the anime. Katie's grandparents use Generation Xerox designs instead.
Badass Adorable: They're about your age, and they take on Wicked-tribe Yo-kai armed with nothing more than a stick covered in pepper juice. And they routinely win. Their sheer badassitude does not escape mention during the story.
Badass Crew: They assembled a crew composed exclusively of extremely famous yo-kai before you even showed up, including such heavyweights as Faux Kappa (AKA the proper Kappa), Pallysol (the classic Karakasa-obake) and Mermaidyn (Ningyo). The crew included the heroic Hovernyan, too. It's this crew getting broken up via defeat that leaves "Grandpa" in the state you first find them in. There is, granted, a bit of Gameplay and Story Segregation here, in that Faux Kappa and Hovernyan are the only members of the crew who go above "D" rank without evolution of some sort. Well, fame's gotta count for something, right?
Family Theme Naming: Nate was named after Nathaniel. Katie's name is similar to Kenny's
Gadgeteer Genius: They invented the freakin' Yo-Kai Watch! At age twelve! Their "secret base" treehouse has some other impressive things for their era, too, like a ham radio on the roof and a water-wheel electrical generator built mostly from spare wooden components.
Heartbroken Badass: Partly because their greatest failure moment is rather more powerful than Nathaniel's was in the movie: when their team of Yo-kai friends tried to take on Kin and Gin, all of them save Hovernyan got turned into stone, and the curse is too strong for "Grandpa" to break in their own time. As a result, they've taken to training and fighting alone, not wanting to risk anyone else getting hurt because of them, which is why they push Hovernyan and the protagonist away at first.
Identical Grandson: Still pretty true with Nathaniel and Nate, all things considered. It's less obvious with Katie and Kenny (their hair is nowhere near similar and isn't even the same color), but they have similar facial casts and most importantly the exact same eyes.
In the Name of the Moon: "Defeat the evils of the world with love, moxie and courage! Moximous Mask! Invincible champion! Defender of all!"
Meaningful Name: In Japanese, their names are written in katakana but their given names both share a first implied kanji with their respective protagonist partners. The non-shared implied kanji tend to be a bit descriptive of the two boys - the "zou" in Keizou can mean, among other things, "image", "portrait" or "appearance", referencing how similar he looks to his grandson. The "aki" in Fumiaki, meanwhile, can mean, among other things, "weariness" - which reflects how worn down Kenny/Fumiaki is by his struggle and its sacrifices.
Mid-Season Upgrade: Provides it by building the Yo-Kai Watch Model Zero for you, giving you a host of new battle commands.
Not So Above It All: They're still enormous Moximous fanboys and pattern their heroics after the comic.
Unwanted Assistance: Their attitude toward the player at first. It stems from having previously lost their yo-kai friends to a curse, and not wanting to get anyone else hurt on their crusade.
Vocal Dissonance: Nathaniel and Kenny's English voices both sound deeper than most eleven-year old boys.

Adaptational Jerkass: Unlike in the games, he has traits of a bully in the manga.
The Bully: Has a shade of this in anime and manga, where he sets up an eraser prank, and punches Nate when he erases his memory with Wazzat and makes him fall for the prank. Utterly absent from his game incarnation, though, who is much more a Gentle Giant and arguably even the biggest softie of the group.

Amnesiac God: Somewhat, as the Enma family's Yo-kai are considered extremely powerful and god-like, however, Lucas seems to be very weak.
Back from the Dead: In the Yo-kai Watch 3 side quest "Enma Note Part 2" where he was revealed to have been murdered, explaining his absence during Yo-kai Watch 3, he's eventually brought back to life at the end of the quest.
Demoted to Extra: True, Nate's classmates were extras to begin with, but its more noticeable with Lucas in the anime due to his role in the first game.
Distressed Dude: He often seems to be put in danger since being a heir to the throne of the Yokai World tends to make him an obstacle for Yo-kai with less than wholesome intentions.
Dreaming of Things to Come: This is the very reason he approaches Nate/Katie during the last chapter of the first game, and why he gives you the quests Back To The Yo-kai World and Nightmare Revelation in the post-game of the sequel as he has dreams that show prophecies of calamities and destined events to come.

Lovable Jock: She plays sports and says she practices karate in the second game.
Love Triangle: A side quest in 2 has Eric and Kenny inspirited by Terrorpotta, resulting in them developing false crushes on Alex. They both send her a letter asking them to meet her. She lets the player choose which boy to meet only for the other boy to show up resulting in an argument. Alex cries to stop their fight and with Terrorpotta discovered and dealt with, Eric and Kenny come to their senses only to develop real crushes on her.
Masculine Girl, Feminine Boy: The masculine girl to Kenny's feminine boy. A side quest has Alex ask for a "Think Karate" book while Kenny asks for a "L'il Angel Heals". When exploring the Old Mansion, Kenny is clearly scared while Alex is excited about exploring.
One of the Boys: At the beginning of the second game, she's playing soccer at school with the boys.
Tomboy: Of the athletic variety and has the outfit to match.

The Leader: He is the one you have to talk to in order to start the detective side quests and return the hidden badges to.
10-Minute Retirement: He vows to disband the Springdale Detective Kids Team if Nate/Katie solves their last riddle. He does and immediately reunites the group under the name "New Springdale Detective Kids Team", because he only said he would disband the group, but never said he wouldn't recreate it.

Casey (Hideo “Hidepon” Yoshida)

A boy who gets into an argument with Nate during the Tattletell scenario.

Spear Counterpart: He replaces Sarah during the Tattletell scenario if Katie is chosen as the player character.

Chelsea (Chiyo Suzuki)

Another girl who often hangs out with Katie.

Daniel Anderson

A boy in Nate's class. He makes up the Springdale Detective Kids Team with Andy and Mark.

Cloudcuckoolander: He often suggests that the boys play a sport, only to comment how funny the word sounds, not knowing what is is, or states he was just joking and claims said sport isn't real.
Dub Name Change: Averted. He's one of the few (if not the only) human characters to not have their name change. Justified, since he already has an English name in the Japanese version.
Token White: Possibly. He is the only one to have a Western name in the Japanese version.

Eric (Takumi Ito)

A boy in Nate's class and the best dancer in the anime. In the first game, he's a victim of Spenp and wastes errand money on toys.

Lina (Rina Maede)

A blue haired girl in Nate's class. She becomes friends with Zoey due to their mutual love of the supernatural and spooky subjects.

Eyes Out of Sight: Her eyes are covered by her hair.
Nice Girl: She may giggle at nothing on occasion, but she's really this. The fact that, in 2, she is the one to offer to become friends with Massiface says it all.
Tomboy and Girly Girl: The girly girl to Zoey's tomboy.
Wide-Eyed Idealist: She's way nicer about Nate's/Katie's explanations for the strange goings on being the fault of Yo-Kai when she lets them join her club. She accepts that there are many things she might not be able to perceive and believes Nate/Katie anyway despite having no proof to back up their claims. Whisper notes how impressive her open-mindedness is.

Determinator/Honor Before Reason: He's playing the arcade's crane game, but since he's possessed by Chansin, he keeps losing. The clerk is worried about him and offers a prize for free since he already blew tons of money. Matt refuses since he thinks prizes are to be won.

The Fashionista: Sarah claims that she's the trendiest person in class and she's part of a sidequest to help a boutique clerk pick out a fashionable outfit for a customer.

Gentle Giant: Aside from Bear, she's the biggest kid in class and about as nice as everyone.

Katie's most frequent friend in the anime. In the games, they get into a fight during the Tattletell scenario (if Nate is the player).

Bookworm: She first shows up in a bookstore (if you're playing as Katie) and comments her love for books and wishes she could buy more.

A quiet, shy, girl in Nate's class. She's initially ignored by her friends due to a Dimmy making her invisible.

Scary Shiny Glasses: In the games, her character portrait portrays one eye normally, but the other is hidden behind her glasses lens. In the anime, the glasses always cover her eyes.

Mythology Gag: Wyatt was Buck's localised name in Wibble Wobble. The gag is kept no matter the localisation, for if Buck is called Mac or Wyatt this classmate will be called one of the other two names.

All Love Is Unrequited: She fancies Nate and tells him so, but Nate doesn't have any dialogue lines responding to it. If you take a look at Dorothy and Katie, Sue Ellen doesn't seem to really match his type either.
Love Confession: She starts fancying Nate while he's possessed by Dandoodle, and doesn't make a big deal of telling him so. And even without Dandoodle inspiriting Nate and making him handsome, if you talk to her after the quest she'll tell Nate she likes how bold he is.

She's still got the loose, flowing hair, the younger facial cast, and the fashion sense of a college undergrad (that scarf!), and on top of that she also gets into knowingly goofy shenanigans for her son's sake (like the beginning of episode 3) and has a very close bond with him as a result, and in the show is also only about six inches taller than Nate, if that. She's supposed to be in her thirties, but you really gotta wonder sometimes...
Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: If talking about Nate's underwear in front of Eddie, Bear, Katie, and Sarah is any indication.

Mr. Goodsight is the owner of Timers & More, a timepiece place just down the street from Bear's home in Blossom Heights. He may be an old man, but he's in charge of Yo-kai Watch maintenance and upgrades.

20 Bear Asses: To get your Watch to Rank C and above, Mr. Goodsight will hand out Requests that task you to fight 3 specific Yo-kai with the same Rank your Yo-kai Watch is set currently as in specific locations. However, the one for Rank S is not available until the post-game.
Adapted Out: He doesn't appear at all in the anime.
Fetch Quest: His debut chapter consists of this. To get the Rank D Yo-kai Watch in the first game, you'd have to get several parts around Blossom Heights needed for Yo-kai Watch tuning, then to get back Goodsight's lucky underwear from the Hot Springs at night.
Full-Body Disguise: Goodsight admits that he's actually a Yo-kai when Nate asks how he can see Whisper when you first need his services.
Godzilla Threshold: Whisper tells Nate about Goodsight after the battle with Slimamander ended with Venoct saving their collective bacon.

The Wonka: As stated above, this guy's the go-to person for upgrading the Yo-kai Watch, and is also a normal watch fixer. Just be prepared if your watch gets added parts when you get it back..

The Fashionista: She wants to be a fashion designer.
Girlish Pigtails: Had these as a child.
The Ghost: Outside of the second movie and the past when Jibanyan was sent back in time in episode 25, she only appears in flashbacks.
How Dare You Die on Me!: In Yo-kai Watch 2, she shouts "That's so lame! Lame lame lame! Why did my cat have to die?" during the flashback where Jibanyan learned how he actually died.
Motherly Side Plait: Her hairstyle as an adult.
Nice Girl: Just look at how she took care of Jibanyan when he was alive (as Rudy).
She Is All Grown Up: In the second film, traveling to the future Jibanyan meets a much older Amy, and the two reunite with each other.

Mr. Batham (Gatarou Gaman)

The old man who inadvertently helped Nate deal with Sproink, Enduriphant's instructor and the Directator's Yes-Man.

Alliterative Name: In the Japanese version.
Continuity Nod: He can be seen with what one can only assume is an identical twin alongside the dancer trio during the boss fight against Sproink in the first game. In the anime, he replaces Mr. Goodsight as being important to the Sproink scenario though in this case it quite thankfully did not involve his underwear...
Satellite Character: He only tends to appear sparingly and when he does, it's usually either to further the plot to be a running gag. While he does have his own personal motivation to a certain degree in his first appearance in the anime, his actions ultimately proved to be more important than himself as a character and the second time he appeared, he again had his own motivations and actions, but they again only served as a means to a resolution that was ultimately more important than himself, with Enduriphant ultimately overshadowing him.
Yes-Man: Every time someone questions the Directator's decisions in the anime and in a quest in Yo-Kai Watch 2, Mr. Batham gives Directator an "OK" hand gesture.

Occult Detective: He technically qualifies, even though he lacks the investigation part.

Thatchet

The president of the Dandai toy company who hires Komasan when he's looking for a job.

Benevolent Boss: When Komasan asks to resign when his job keeps him from spending time with Komajiro, Thatchet actually accepts and takes back his job as president, even though it would keep him from spending time with his own family.
Easily Impressed: He gets inspired to make his next toy line based on just about anything Komasan says, and instantly promotes him to executive.
Parental Neglect: He states himself that he has been a terrible father, who is consumed by work and has little time for his daughter.

Director Phonius (Yarase)

Voiced by: Paul Greenberg (English)

A TV show producer who uses Komasan and Komajiro to star in a show about discovering mythical creatures, which is really just a bunch of cheap special effects.

Enforced Method Acting: He has Komasan participate on the show without telling him that all the creatures are fake so that he reacts with awe and excitement at "discovering" them.
Well-Intentioned Extremist: He only created the show to spark the imagination of people worldwide, even if it meant lying to them.
