Privateer
Grayson Burrows
A mercenary out on the fringes of Confederation society, and thanks to an alien artifact a player in the Gemini Sector. He appears in Privateer and its add-on Righteous Fire- Ace Pilot: Demonstrated in the intro, where he shows Improbable Piloting Skills against a trio of pirates harassing him and manages to kill all of them despite flying in a Tarsus, a light freighter that isn't built for fancy combat.
- Action Genre Hero Guy: A Unbuilt Trope example as a brown-haired Han Solo Expy.
- Adventurer Archaeologist: Many of his adventures in the Gemini Sector relate to finding an alien drone belonging to a lost civilization.
- All-Loving Hero: A potential playstyle as you can eventually become friends with every faction in the game but the Retros. This includes the Kilrathi.
- Antihero: Of a varying type. You can be a lovable rogue who only is out to make a few bucks on the semi-legitimate market or a drug-dealing slaver.
- Archenemy: Of the Retros.
- Cool Ship: Comes with being an Expy of Han Solo.
- Expy: Of Han Solo.
- Little Hero, Big War: In the middle of a multi-decade war spanning a significant portion of the galaxy, his adventures in the Gemini Sector are pretty much irrelevant outside of the sector.
- Nominal Hero: You can engage in piracy against legitimate shipping as well as other less-savory activities, making you as bad as those you fight.
- Odd Friendship: Grayson can befriend the Kilrathi in the midst of their genocidal war against humanity.
- Pay Evil unto Evil: The people you sell into slavery are pirates who formally attempted to attack you.
- Privateer: Of course.
- Wave-Motion Gun: Grayson acquires one of these for his ship at the end of Privateer. Access to this new superweapon leads to predictable outcomes in Righteous Fire as groups immediately try (and succeed) in stealing it for themselves.
Privateer 2
Ser Lev Arris
Played by Clive Owen
An amnesiac Human Popsicle who awakens shortly before a bunch of armed men try to kill him along with everyone in the hospital he's staying in.
- The Ace: Is handsome, an Ace Pilot, Secretly Wealthy, a skilled killer, and loved by almost everyone. This is Deconstructed as this almost results in a bunch of Driven by Envy psychopaths.
- Amnesiac Dissonance: Lev was a horrible person before his amnesia by all accounts.
- Cain and Abel: Is the Abel. Becomes the Cain.
- Fish out of Water: In a World of Ham and Fantastic Noir, he's the Only Sane Man.
- Only Sane Man: Is generally rational and pragmatic in a world of Large Ham lunatics.
- Necessarily Evil: Becomes the new Kronos and takes over the Kindred because the alternative is worse.
- Privateer: Of course.
- Secretly Wealthy: He's apparently possessed of a vast fortune. It just takes him awhile to remember where it is.
