The titular character of the series. Iruma is a weak, yet kindhearted human boy whose parents sold his soul to a demon named Sullivan when he was fourteen. Now living in the netherworld as Sullivan’s adopted grandson, Iruma begins to attend Babyls Demon School - all the while learning that demons like to eat humans. As such, he desperately tries his best not to stand out so that none of his peers and teachers discover his true nature as the only human living in the netherworld. Iruma’s initially very reluctant about all of this, yet his hellish time with his parents has left him unable to say no when people ask for favors. However, through his numerous encounters with all sorts of demons starting with befriending two noteworthy demon students in Azz and Clara, Iruma gradually grows accustomed to his new lifestyle.

During his initial days at Babyls, Iruma's placed in the Misfit Class due to the trouble he caused on the first day when Azz chose to duel him. He's also forced to start at the lowest demon ranking due to the ranking owl not knowing how to judge him. Instead, Iruma's given a mysterious ring, which turns out to be a Ring of Gluttony that not only allows for Iruma to use magic as a human in the netherworld, but it also houses a mysterious spirit within it that doesn't remember its past. Since Iruma doesn't quite know what his overall end-goal is, he's advised by Ameri to start with rising up the demon rankings to help figure out his path.

Iruma's school journey up the rankings results in Iruma becoming the leader of the Magical Tools Research Division, and he becomes adapt in archery thanks to the training he received from Bachiko. However, Iruma's biggest claim-to-fame is him becoming the defacto leader of Babyls' Misfit Class due to his efforts in helping everyone in the class rise up the demon rankings despite their flaws that deemed them as troublesome misfits who had no motivation to become better. Overall, Iruma's fast growing achievements at Babyls has resulted in him being named as a candidate to one day become the Demon King.

    A-D
  • Achievements in Ignorance: He successfully casts a spell as part of his start-of-school speech that could have killed him if he had mispronounced it, while not knowing what he was actually doing.
  • All-Loving Hero: He feels kindness and sincerity towards everyone he meets, always doing his best to help others no matter who they are.
    • Even in situations where demons do something seriously evil, such as Kiriwo Amy's attempt to blow up the school and kill thousands of demons in the process, Iruma feels little more than disappointment, as well as hope that the perpetrator can eventually become a better person.
    • When he gains skills in archery, he has no trouble shooting magical beasts or targets, but dislikes hurting other people. In the Heartbreaker Competition he aims only to pin Sheeda to the wall by her clothes but not any shot which can harm her or kill her. When she easily rips free from the arrows binding her to the wall, she calls Iruma a coward for his unwillingness to aim for the kill when facing an enemy.
  • Aloof Archer: Following his tutorship under Bachiko, Iruma takes up archery, a skill that is pointed out to be something that most demons avoid due to how difficult it is for them to be patient while shooting an arrow. This greatly complements his abilities, allowing for a fighting style where he avoids close combat and attacks from a distance. However, interestingly enough, Iruma is a near-complete inversion of the usual characteristics associated with an archer. Whereas the archetypical archer is cold and calculating, semi-averse to following orders, and mainly works alone, Iruma is quite kind-hearted, mostly subservient to others' whims (though he's gradually growing out of it), and works best when he’s on a team.
  • Aloof Dark-Haired Girl: Wicked Phase Irumi constantly gives off this atmosphere according to the other evidols, with her aloof yet confident personality making her "cool yet unapproachable". That said, she inverts the other tropes associated with it aside from probably her hair, being short rather than tall and lacking in figure (because "she"'s not even a girl to begin with).
  • Amazon Chaser: Towards Ameri, who he grows to admire for her charisma and super strength and beauty.
  • Attractive Bent-Gender: "Attractive" is perhaps underselling it - when he crossdresses, he's pretty enough to compete with professional evidols (demon idol singers), and when he enters his Wicked Phase during an evidol contest and starts acting outright seductive, he can make an entire stadium audience's jaws hit the floor.
  • Audience Surrogate: Being a stranger to the strange netherworld, he naturally serves as this. The audience learns more about this version of Hell and the people who inhabit it along with Iruma.
  • Awesome by Analysis: He's shown to be very good in analyzing students and situations. This is most evident when he goes through a wicked phase that Arikled induces and then uses his knowledge of his classmates to secure their end goal.
  • Badass Adorable: He's an adorable, dorky Nice Guy who's always open to helping others and absolutely cherishes the family and friends he's gained in the netherworld, even those that act antagonistic towards him. He's also almost untouchable due to his reflexes, in addition to having a great deal of potential power thanks to his magic-eating ring. He's solved many crises that nobody besides his adoptive grandfather, one of the three strongest demons in the netherworld, could've done anything about.
  • Badass Boast: In chapter 248, when he is about to shoot an arrow at Robin and inhibit the teacher's attack on the First-years trying to stop Sullivan's awakening, Iruma has this to say.
    "My arrows never miss!"
  • Badass on Paper: The accomplishments that got him his ever-growing in-universe reputation as a colossal badass are very real and his close friendship with some students and private tutor Bachiko gives him incredible political clout, but you'd never guess it from looking at him.
  • Batman Gambit: During his Evil Cycle, his first target to get the signature of teachers is to have him and Jazz steal from Kalego. This results in a gambit leading to another gambit.
    • When Iruma approaches Kalego with a familiar summoning seal and muses how he might use it to force Kalego to give his permission, Kalego is furious and forgets about Jazz, allowing Jazz to pilfer Kalego's journal without the teacher noticing.
    • With the journal in hand, they then find Mononoki, knowing her huge crush on Kalego will make her want the book and not question their claim of just finding it, and successfully get her to agree to give them her approval in exchange for the journal.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Upon his departure from the Student Council, Iruma wishes he knew more about Demons and their Wicked Phases as he falls asleep. Cue Arikled, who listened to the whole thing, deciding to have some fun with him and force him into a Wicked Phase for a few days. When he finally went back to normal he was understandably mortified, and spent the next several hours repeatedly apologizing to everybody, even though nobody faulted him for what they perceived as venting his built up stress, especially since they found him cool that way and he helped them gain the Royal One classroom due to it.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: The primary reason he grows closer to Ameri, because she helps him want to better himself for himself, pushes him to stop being such a doormat, and gently instills desires for his own ambitions and wants rather than only following the wants of others like he was raised to do. This is also implied to be the reason why he starts desiring to get to know her better than most of his classmates, even having started gaining romantic interest in her.
  • Becoming the Mask: This is what happens when it comes to his stints acting as an evidol. At first, he simply did it as a way to help Kerori when she got sick, but over time he develops a high level of confidence and commitment to his skill at charming the masses as a cute girl. This comes to a head in the "Evidol Games", where after being called "ugly" by Gyari, along with Kerori being told to quit, he feels genuinely insulted, to point of being fired up towards winning the competition.
  • Big Damn Heroes: While Iruma tries to stay in the shadows and not in the spotlight, he ends up drawing attention in big ways when he saves the day.
    • In the Battler Party Arc, Iruma takes the magically-amplified fireworks shell from Kiriwo's machine and races past the demon to get out a window. He then uses magic to throw the bomb straight up, but when the shell is unable to penetrate the strongest of Kiriwo's barriers, Iruma unleashes all the magic within the ring for one concentrated attack, shattering the barrier permanently and pushing the shell high enough for the blast radius to do no immediate harm.
    • In the Walter Park arc, when the fused form of the the magical beasts is about to explode and take out dozens if not hundreds of civilian casualties, Romiere Ronove draws its attack away from the civilians but is at a lose what to do next. Iruma rushes between the creature and Romiere, then uses the Ring of Gluttony and Ali to absorb all that powerful mana, and thus saves everyone in the vicinity.
    • Part of his training for the Harvest Festival is in archery. His tutor Baicho Barbatos describes being a great archer as one who can change the course of a battle with a single arrow. Iruma fulfills this when he learns Orobas is targetting Clara. He races to find her and when atop a cliff sees her in a great distance about to be attacked by a monster and she is likely being afflicted by Orobas' Trauma power and cannot fight back. He steels his resolve and uses his last arrow to fire the distance and kills the creature in a single shot, breaking the illusion cast over it, and saving Clara.
    • In the Heartbreaker Challenge Arc
      • Iruma finds and snipes Robin Balse right as the teacher is about to shoot some first years who are close to completing their mission. His intimidating aura distracts Robin to lose his focus and then Iruma's shot destroys Robin's sniper nest, thus saving the First Years and stopping Sullivan's entry into the competition for the Teachers.
      • This is soon followed up when he, unknowingly, saves Asmodeus's group from Kalego when he transforms the teacher into a familiar right before he was about to unleash a devastating attack.
  • Big Eater: Iruma is capable of eating impossibly large amounts of food like it was nothing. It's no wonder he got a magic ring associated with Gluttony. By the later chapters of the story, even Azz and Clara are calling out his snacking habits and he resorts to hiding in empty classrooms so he can eat more snacks in secret. And then in some points, he was astonished by the food in a restaurant for high ranking demons Ameri invites him to, and during the Battler recruitment, he was seen eating noodles from the Food Battler. It technically becomes a plot point during the Thirteen's Dinner arc, as the Thirteen Crowns get insight on the Demon King candidates, Iruma included, based on how they eat, with them considering Iruma to have a bottomless amount of Greed after being the first to ever ask for seconds, with even Baal terrified to think of someone with that much Greed as the Demon King.
  • Book Dumb: He has difficulty understanding the questions on his tests, causing him to actually score lower on them than Clara. Justified since he’s a human in a demon school (which has very different educational standards from a human school), and even disregarding that fact, he likely never got much of a chance at formal education in the human world anyway thanks to his parents' exploits.
  • Borrowed Catchphrase: When he is pulling a Big Damn Heroes moment in chapter 248, he announces himself by using Bachiko Barbatos' declaration, "My arrows never miss!" For bonus points, his target is Robin, Bachiko's cousin in the branch family, who initially felt Iruma's threat to be just like when Bachiko is poised to shot her target.
  • Butt-Monkey: Life apparently had it out for poor Iruma, seemingly viewing him as a Cosmic Plaything to dump as much misery on as possible, with most of his past circumstances portrayed in a Hilariously Abusive Childhood way. Even after developing Super-Reflexes to avoid getting hurt and gaining a better life from being Happily Adopted by Sullivan, the universe still manages to figure out ways to make him the butt of jokes for its various forms of comedic slapstick.
  • The Cape: Iruma finds himself slowly developing into one from the start of the Walter Park through the Heartbreaker Competition. In order to unlock a strong enough desire that would allow him to summon a bow of his own style, he confesses he doesn't want to be left alone as the others in his class grow stronger. His high levels of empathy for others help him become admired and loved by many around him, and this in turn makes them grow more empathetic to others as well. He grows to being the leader of the Misfits, and when it comes to the Heartbreaker competition, he outright admits he wants to be seen as a hero by the younger students.
  • The Chains of Commanding: During his second-year as he is the highest ranking member of the Magitools Battler, he is their leader and he takes that job seriously. When their presentation for this year hits a roadblock and requires Sylvia to put herself in serious danger in order to achieve their desires, he knows this has to be a careful choice and it weighs on him. He also knows they will need the teachers and Sabnock's sign-off before they even attempt it.
  • Character Development: For a good chunk of the early story, he really didn't have much character to him beyond being a nice guy with a horrible childhood. His inability to say no to anything left him very prone to being manipulated by others, including those whom he would later become close friends with. Ameri actually calls him out on this, telling him he needs to find his own desire and better himself. From that point onwards, he slowly begins to develop a backbone and some personal ambitions.
  • Charles Atlas Superpower:
    • Iruma's uncanny ability to dodge any and all harm coming at him. He gained this after so many close calls with death from working the countless jobs that his worthless parents dumped onto him.
    • Less glamorously (but perhaps equally impressively) his high-energy, high-stress, low-budget upbringing has left him as a Big Eater and Extreme Omnivore of superhuman proportions, able to inspire both fear and awe in even the mightiest demons through his colossal and expansive appetite. Eating contests stop being contests when Iruma enters the fray.
  • Chekhov's Gun: His blood once managed to cure a wound of one of the king of the valley's offspring. During the Harvest Festival, he uses his blood to accelerate the growth of a plant into colossal size to get out of an underground cave.
  • Chekhov's Skill:
    • The skills he gained from his life of hardship and survival before he was adopted becomes very useful during the Harvest Festival, which is a four-day endurance test of survival in the wilderness against the elements, dangerous flora and fauna, and the sneakiness of other students trying to make each other fail.
    • Bachiko forcing him and Lied to team-dance in woman's dresses during the special tutor training seemed like just a comedic moment at first, but the Iruma/Lied team-dance ended up playing a key role in the Harvest Festival using it to convince Kerori to provide them the information they need to search for the Legendary Leaf.
  • The Chessmaster: During his "Wicked Phase", he single-handedly maneuvers his classmates into using their skills to get the signatures needed to have his class transferred to the King's Classroom.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: In addition to being an Extreme Doormat, Iruma being an All-Loving Hero compels him to help out however he can whenever he sees somebody having problems, the best example being when he was pissed off by how nobody was doing anything to help during the Walter Park disaster, which he responds to by trying to save everybody himself. Even as he grows out of his old Extreme Doormat mentality, this compulsion remains, and in fact grows even stronger as he moves away from his old self because he comes to willingly choose to help people.
  • Cloudcuckoolander's Minder: Both he and Asmodeus serve as this for Clara.
  • Clueless Chick-Magnet: Ameri completely fell in love with him and has trouble trying to hide it, Clara gets confused feelings about him at times until the girls-only party where she admits that she wouldn't mind marrying him, Eiko keeps stalking him to try and talk in part due to her crush on him, Kerori has taken to occasionally blushing around him, Chima has a crush on him after he saves her, and several other girls in the school have considered him to be cute. It's gotten so bad there are rumors around the school about him having at least ten girlfriends, yet he is completely unaware of this. However, he seems completely oblivious to all of this so far. This is possibly due to the fact he had no life outside bowing to his parents' whims before coming to the netherworld, leaving him completely unprepared for even noticing, let alone dealing with, romance.
  • Coat Cape: Wore his coat like this during his Wicked Phase.
  • The Conscience: While unintended on his part, him acting as a normal human with normal human empathy and introducing the term "friends" to Azz and Clara starts him on the path to being this for his classmates and even some teachers. Both Clara and Azz grow from his example and kindness into more mature and wise individuals. He rejects the demon's Lack of Empathy they have when somehting is too dangerous and they don't have a sufficient connection to intervene, and will risk his life for others, which draws his friends to act in similar ways.
  • Covert Pervert:
    • Ameri thinks he is one due to how she keeps accidentally stumbling upon him in a frilly outfit. Given how much of a lady-killer he is during his "wicked phase", she might actually be on to something with "normal" Iruma, but in a Right for the Wrong Reasons kind of way.
    • Gets another case of being mistaken for this when Lied and the guys are coming up with ideas about how to get closer to Elizabetta, and Iruma suggests going to a water park. The fact this would involve going there wearing swimsuits has the guys outright calling Iruma a pervert, which troubles Iruma into wondering if he truly is one, since that's the place he went with Ameri for their "date".
  • Cowardly Lion: He's normally terrified being around Demons in school full of them (which is a given since he's a human), yet when people he cares about are in danger, he manages to put those fears aside to protect others. Part of his Character Development revolves around him growing more accustomed to the demon world and standing up for himself to others.
  • Crash-Into Hello: How he meets Ameri. Downplayed on his part due to his obliviousness, but the two become good friends (and even date once) through the Hatsukoi Memory reading sessions that this initiates.
  • Curtains Match the Windows: He has vibrantly blue hair and bright blue eyes.
  • The Cutie: A rare male example. Beyond looking the part, Iruma is genuinely kind to everyone he meets, and always tries to resolve situations as peacefully as possible. He can also act endearingly childlike whenever he’s really excited or curious about something, such as going to an amusement park for the first time. This has helped to win him the respect and admiration of many demons - Lied even outright calls him a cinnamon roll at one point!
  • Dare to Be Badass: Gives one to his class during his wicked phase, in an attempt to convince them to share his ambition in transferring to the King’s Classroom:
Iruma: Yes, you all prefer “having fun”. You’re faithful to your “desire” alone. And those demons who take pride in being outcasts and different, those dangerous demons who drown in their desire, are like a clutch of fledgling primal demons. Royal One should interest you all, shouldn’t it? A place sealed off for all centuries, forbidden to all, the pride of Babyls…the classroom holding treasures of untold value, pristine relics of the Demon King…don’t you all want to use it? It would be pretty “fun”, right? There are tons of other people who’d love a chance to go in. Also, the facilities are simply excellent. I hear there are some unique rooms, like a nap room and a gymnasium. There are fixtures of great value and taste furnishing the restrooms. It might make you popular. If we’re going to stand out, anyway, let’s truly be abnormal.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Though bits and pieces are sprinkled through the manga, it's really telling that being sold off to the Legions of Hell is a vast, vast improvement. Not only that, but when he gets lost in Walter Park and a shady person tries to drag him into a dark alley, he doesn't think "I have a bad feeling about this" or "I believe this is wrong." He thinks "my experience is telling me this is a bad thing!"
  • Deconstructed Character Archetype: Of the Extreme Doormat trope. While Iruma has had a crappy life up until Sullivan took him in, he's highly submissive towards others around him, making him unable to just say no to anyone. Here, he gets adopted by a literal Demon and brought to the Netherworld where he might get eaten, showcasing the consequences of his utter inability to just refuse other's requests, making him come off as so easy to manipulate that he'll do anything for anyone if they just ask hard enough. While most doormats are like this, Iruma shows that his inability to deny other's requests makes his situation partially his own fault because he just wouldn't refuse someone's favors.
  • Delayed "Oh, Crap!": In the ending of Season 1 of the anime, Iruma happily goes through all of the routine of a normal day, even singing the School's Anthem without a care. It isn't until he gets home goes to bed does he realize he has gotten way too comfortable in the Demon Realm.
  • Determinator: Regardless of anything else others might think or say about him, and no matter where he is in terms of his Character Development, a consistent aspect of him right from the very beginning is the fact that if he sets his mind to something, there is literally nothing anybody can do to discourage him from accomplishing what he wants to do, with him only stopping if he chooses to. Whether it's completely every task given to him to the best of his abilities, giving his all when it comes to things he genuinely wants to do, or refusing to stop when somebody is doing something bad until either he's saved the day or died trying, once he's decided on his course of actions, it's not a matter of if he will succeed, it's when.
    E-I
  • Empowered Badass Normal: Right from the start he already had some decent skills, such as incredible reflexes and a high capacity for completing anything that people asked of him. Then he acquired his Ring of Power, which gave him the power to absorb and use magic, allowing him to become a legitimate badass in his own right. This later becomes deconstructed, however, as it's a consistent sore point for Iruma that all of his mana is effectively borrowed, and unlike his classmates he has no bloodline magic to rely on. If Sullivan weren't around to top up his ring every now and again, he would just go back to being a regular human with no magical powers. This is partly why his training in archery is significant: even if the magic he uses isn't his own, archery became something that only he could do as a result of his Training from Hell.
  • Endearingly Dorky: A significant part of why so many demons flock to him and enjoy being around him is because he's a Nice Guy with a weird and whimsical mindset towards everything, especially by demon standards. Ameri most especially, as not only does she find his personality appealing, the fact he also is a fan of the Hatsukoi Memory manga means she has a kindred spirit in her geeky hobby.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: In-Universe, his "Irumi" persona becomes instantly popular among evidol fans, despite only appearing once as Kuromu's opening act.
  • Even the Guys Want Him: While under his alias "Irumi-chan" several boys thought he was cute, much to his embarrassment. Beyond that, Asmodeus and even Kirio have some pretty, er, passionate feelings about him. The charm and charisma his Wicked Phase oozes makes even the hearts of boys skip a beat just like the girls.
  • Even the Loving Hero Has Hated Ones: He's a major case of an All-Loving Hero that always tries his best to see the good in people, and even performing morally reprehensible actions like attempted murder will normally only make him disappointed. But there are two people in Iruma's entire life that he makes quite clear, even in spite of his Extreme Doormat Nice Guy personality, that he hates the guts of so much he wishes to never see them ever again: his absurdly neglectful and manipulative Abusive Parents, who are the entire reason he started the series with zero backbone or self-esteem and the cause of so much trauma in his life. His uncharacteristic hatred towards his parents is such that, when he was sold to a demon and made to live in a society where revealing his humanity risks him being eaten, it was something he personally views as a massive improvement over living with his parents.
  • Every Man Has His Price: Played for laughs in his second year. When other Battlers are trying to keep Iruma's from gaining lots of freshman because of his popularity, the food battler delays Iruma with lots of yummy food.
  • Everyone Can See It: His relationship with Ameri slowly becomes this over the course of the series. As they interact with each other more and grow closer, a few characters (such as Opera, Lied, Asmodeus, Henri, Purson, and even Clara) have noticed that Iruma cares for Ameri more than he thinks. It's not until Ameri hugging him at his Deviculum debut where Iruma begins to really question his relationship with her, becoming unsure of whether or not she's just a friend to him.
  • Exactly What I Aimed At: By the time of the Heartbreaker Competition in his second year, Iruma has become proficient in his aiming skills where it seems like he is missing his target, but in truth he is aiming at Sheeda's clothing to pin her and not actually harm her. She realizes this partway through the attack and while he does pin her, it is only momentarily as she rips herself free, though at the cost of her clothing being ripped off. She then chastises him for this tactic and not aiming to hurt her, calling it cowardly.
  • Extreme Doormat: Boy, is he. Not only does he have an extremely hard time saying no when people ask for favors, he will be both physically and psychologically compelled to help others if they ask using certain phrases, as explained below in his Weaksauce Weakness entry. Even when he goes through his magically-induced wicked phase and becomes a far more assertive and confident version of himself, the most he can do when being requested for something is to try and resist it, and even then he'll comply if pushed a little further. He becomes less of this as the series goes on, however, even managing to actually decline Ameri's offer to stay in the Student Council in order to pursue his own ambitions.
  • Extreme Omnivore: Due to how poorly his parents treated him, especially in regards to feeding him, his stomach has apparently gotten to the point where he can eat pretty much anything, so long as it's edible.
  • Famed In-Story: Constantly, despite him desperately trying not to be. His first day at school consisted of him successfully chanting a forbidden curse, before using said curse to take down Asmodeus, the freshman class’s honor student, to the point where the latter dedicates himself to serving him! And Iruma’s name only spreads further across Babyls through his other completely accidental exploits as the story goes on. Part of this is actually invoked by Sullivan, Iruma’s own grandfather, mainly out of the sheer pride he takes in finally having a grandchild. Iruma chanting a forbidden curse in front of the entire school was partially Sullivan’s own doing, and when Iruma manages to stop the terrorist attack at Walter Park with the help of his friends, Sullivan openly credits and brags about Iruma on live television.
  • Feather Motif: Instead of his usual Flower Motif listed below, he gets black feathers around him when he temporarily goes through a wicked phase.
  • Fish out of Water: Besides the general danger that he's in simply from being a human in the demon world, he's also completely ignorant of said demon world's history, culture, and customs. He initially does horribly on his school's tests because of this.
  • Flower Motif: He has flowers appearing around him whenever he is happy or simply being a nice guy.
  • Foreshadowing: It's been hinted several times that he will become the next Demon King, mostly based on an ancient prophecy that foretold what will happen to him.
  • Forgotten Birthday: In chapter 182, it is revealed that Iruma's birthday is October 4th, which at this point in the story that was 21 days ago. He actually wasn't sad they forgot, and given how horrible his own parents were, its sadly implied he was used to not even having his birthday acknowledged. When he experiences one while surrounded by loved ones, it causes him to cry tears of joy.
  • Fragile Speedster: Due to his tiny stature and comparatively weaker Muggle constitution, he knows he'll be very messed up if someone lands a hit on him. If they can, anyhow.
  • Freudian Excuse: His inability to say no to anything and his shy demenor stems from his harsh lifestyle and his abusive parents who put him through all kinds of hell. Because of this he was easily manipulated in an effort to survive and not be left alone. Part of his Character Development revolves around him learning to Grew a Spine and be more assertive.
  • Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse: While Iruma has a legitimate reason for being so meek and timid around others, due to his parents's horribly abusive raising of him, that' still no excuse to be such a doormat to others who ask him to do something because of his inability to say no. Being adopted by Sullivan is a prime example, letting a literal Demon take him in as his adopted grandson and going to an all Demon school where he could be eaten at any moment all just because he couldn't say no. Ameri (who doesn't know the full details of his past) calls him out on that, lecturing him on how his lack of an ambition makes him so meek towards others because he doesn't think for himself, needing to be more assertive for himself.
  • Got Volunteered:
    • Initially, because of the abusive conditioning by his human parents, he will go along with being volunteered with something by being asked.
    • Anytime someone asks who is the leader of the group, said group will usually volunteer him as the leader.
    • While he initially became Irumi to help Kerori, nearly every other instance of dressing as Irumi is because Kerori needs his help shows up demanding he dress up again.
    • After the Magic Item Research Club is temporarily disbanded, Ameri made Iruma become a member of the Student Council till he got a letter of recommendation.
  • Grew a Spine: His character arc as a whole. He slowly becomes more confident in his ability to take charge in life instead of letting people walk all over him. It's still slow enough that he's the Butt-Monkey in most situations, but he's at least going in the right direction.
  • Happily Adopted: It's really surprising just how much better his adoptive demonic grandfather treats him when compared to the blood-related trash that was supposed to be his human parents.
  • The Heart: Iruma almost always goes out of his way to help anybody in need (even if it's due to his Weaksauce Weakness), winning over the admiration of many different kinds of demons in the process. Both his introverted-yet-kind personality and his altruistic actions have made him the glue that holds many of his newly-formed friends together.
  • He Cleans Up Nicely: While normally meek and cute rather than on the handsome side, during the Music Festival and having his hair done and in a suit...hot damn he looks fine.
  • Heroic BSoD: Despite showing his competence as a leader and being able to overcome all odds, there are times his confidence gets a nosedive:
    • During the Harvest Festival arc, he falls in a cavern, but sees illusions of his friends (namely Ameri, Clara, and Azz) leaving him, his parents suddenly showing up out of the blue causes him to cry his heart out. Luckily he snaps out of it.
    • After the Heartbreak Competition, he personally felt like he failed his team after Vine gets his heart balloon popped, thus eliminating him in the process, and Ameri sees him at his most vulnerable. Ameri then told him she planned to ascend to higher ranks, and this encourages him to be in the same rank as her.
    • During the Deviculum arc, his confidence once again takes a nosedive when Fenrir (who is actually Narnia in disguise) tells him about his views on humans and thinks they should die completely shakes him up to his core, which gets Amaryllis involved, and slaps him on the dance floor for it. Once he is alone, he displays his insecurities to Paimon. However she tells him to not let it intimidate him if someone hates him.
  • Heroic Resolve: Ameri gives him one after feeling down for his elimination from the Heartbreat Exam. When she tells him she plans to climb to higher ranks, it was enough to perk him up to go for the same rank as her and be her equal.
  • Hidden Depths: Given some implications, the demonic "wicked phase" that Arikled forcibly induced in him just involves amplifying and bringing to the forefront all of his inner vices, along with removing his inhibitions, rather than actually making him evil. Going by this, right from the start there's been more to him than simply a sycophantic nice guy, such as an impeccable ability to notice and understand everybody around him, a slight disdain towards anybody that looks down on others, and a deeply-buried yet highly-capable playboy side.
  • Hilariously Abusive Childhood: His human parents left him to fend for himself on his own two feet. Literally, since they considered him independent enough to do so as soon as he could walk!
  • Hope Is Scary: He used to live his life in constant peril with little-to-no chances for genuine happiness thanks to his awful parents, which didn't bother him since that's how his life had always been. But ever since he came to the netherworld, he began experiencing numerous things that he never knew before, including a happy family, genuine friends, and a proper education where he gets to interact with people who treat him with respect. However, now that he's gained something worth living for, he also gained something that he could possibly lose, and in chapter 123, experiencing an illusion which displays his greatest fears causes him to break down crying, making him despair over the possibility that everybody learning he's actually human will sever his ties to the netherworld, make everybody hate him and force him to have to go back to his terrible old life.
  • Idiot Hair: He has a sickle-shaped tuft of hair that sticks out of the top of his head.
  • Idol Singer: His Evidol persona Irumi is one when he genderswaps.
  • I Just Want to Be Loved:
    • His childhood was filled with parental abuse and neglect, and so he never got to experience any type of love or affection. After being adopted by Sullivan, however, he's come to have the family he's always wanted, friends to adore him, and a place he can call home, even if it is in the Netherworld.
    • This also becomes a case of Dramatic Irony, as Iruma's oblivious of the clear romantic affections that he's gained from Ameri and the crushes that Clara, Kerori, Chima, and Eiko have for him.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends:
    • Played with. Due to the many different dangerous tasks that his abusive and neglectful parents forced him to do, Iruma was never left with enough time to build bonds with other people in the human world. Upon entering Hell and attending Babyls, this is initially downplayed, as Iruma didn’t want to stand out at all for fear of being eaten by his demonic new classmates. However, he soon meets Asmodeus and Clara, whom he would later dub his “No. 1” and “No. 2” friends, respectively. He then goes on to make a sizable number of friends over time as a result of his various adventures and encounters (all of whom he cherishes greatly), learning the value of having ones to both connect with and rely on. He also comes to realize, with complete terror and dread, that he can potentially lose all of the friendships that he's spent so much his time forging.
    • This has become Iruma’s deepest, most embarrassing desire by the time Bachiko begins to tutor him, and it is what allows him to persevere despite Bachiko actively trying to make him give up on her as a tutor at every turn.
  • I Know Karate: He learned martial arts as a means of defending himself, due to getting into dangerous situations thanks to his horrible parents.
  • Impossible Task Instantly Accomplished: During his First-Year Harvest Festival, he must either defeat Thoth the Genie in combat or tell him a story he hasn't heard and moves his heart. After only a few seconds of thinking, Iruma decides to enact the first volume of First Love's Memories with some props and Naphra. He succeeds so well that after being given the seed, Iruma mentions more volumes and prompts Thoth to try and take the seed back to hear more stories.
    • Iruma tops himself in the aftermath of the Deviculum. The Netherworld faced a crisis after the President of the Barbatos Clan sent a furious letter to the Thirteen Crowns in response to the insult against Bachiko, threatening to bring the Three Hero clans to clash against the Crowns if they weren't appeased. The situation was so serious that the Crowns were cautious about approaching the Barbatos lands in fear of being attacked. But just as they began making plans to forestall the dangerously close civil war, the President arrived at their meeting with Iruma in tow- saying that the boy had visited him uninvited- and offered a compromise to end the tension.
  • Implied Love Interest: To Ameri. While numerous girls have shown varying degrees of romantic interest in him, none of them are as pronounced as hers. Iruma, for his part, has personally asked Ameri out to what was essentially a date, and he would later invite her to his house so the two of them can bake cookies together. Most of their other interactions together mirror those from Hatsukoi Memory. Despite all of this, there’s little to no concrete indication of him harboring romantic feelings for her. Until Chapter 180, that is, where after being embraced by Ameri out of her desire to get closer to him, he starts questioning how he truly feels about her, to the point of blushing at the thought of it.
  • Informed Flaw: One that's more for laughs than anything serious. It's a small running gag that Iruma has started to gain weight from all the eating he does, so Azz and Clara have started confiscating his snacks, leading him to hiding them wherever he can. However visually, he's just as thin as he's ever been and he doesn't seem to be having any issues fitness wise either.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: His eyes are blue, which fits well with his innocence and kindness.
  • Innocently Insensitive:
    • Is this when he tells Kerori (who works incredibly hard at being a famous "evidol", or demon idol) that he's jealous of her for not standing out at all in school, while he keeps drawing attention without even trying.
    • When he receives a subtle love confession from Chima Crocell which he mistakes as a declaration to become number one academically in front of Ameri, he tells Ameri he hopes the girl gets her desire. Ameri, who realizes what the girl is really saying, is shocked and angered by his statement, to Iruma's confusion.
  • Insecure Love Interest: While it's ambiguous as to his supposed obliviousness towards other girls, there are subtle hints he's more than aware of some of the girl's interest in him yet because of his harsh life up until now his self-esteem is seriously low self-doubt in himself as to believing he doesn't deserve such love and affection. His growing relationship with Ameri is a prime example, as most romantic moments they have together shows him either unsure as to what to say or just trying to change the subject all together out of confusion as to what to say. Possibly the biggest example is their dance at their first Deviculum where she hugs him nearly confessing her feelings for him, and the face he makes shows how shocked and possibly insecure with himself to the point he can't even look at her but staring at the ground almost as if he feels unworthy of another's love.
  • In-Series Nickname: As he learns in his second year, his nicknames among the first years and other students are "The Top Score Killer" for his getting the attraction of the most recent top scoring students (Ameri, Azz, and Chima), and "Demon Swooner Iruma" for having an ever-growing harem of demons who are incredibly strong and will do things for him at his beck and call.
  • Instant Web Hit: His idol persona, Irumi-chan, is surprisingly popular among the male students at his school.
  • In Touch with His Feminine Side: He's a big fan of shoujo manga, his Hilariously Abusive Childhood left him as a highly skilled potential House Husband (not that he tends to have much opportunity or reason to do the chores at home these days with Opera around), and while he's not exactly what you would call an enthusiastic crossdresser, he's remarkably willing and able to do so and to get into his role as 'Irumi' whenever the situation requires.
  • Is This What Anger Feels Like?:
    • Experiences this upon seeing the immediate aftermath of demonic beasts destroying Walter Park, as well as seeing a child cry for help yet receiving nondue to the inherently selfish nature of demons. He clutches his chest as he tries to understand the stinging, aching feeling in his heart. Upon seeing a picture of his friends, he realizes the anger at the situation boiling within him and resolves to do something about it.
    • Has a similar experience later after his first tutoring session with Bachiko Barbatos, where she treats him like a manservant before calling him an idiot for his dedication. Afterwards, he spends the rest of the day confused about how he couldn't get the person out of his mind, with it only being when he's in bed and has time to think that he realizes he's feeling extremely frustrated at how she treated him, to which he decides to go back and give it his all as a light form of spite.
    J-P
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Whenever he's put into an artificial Wicked Phase by Arikled, it makes him become much more smug, aggressive, and overall, very assertive, constantly speaking how he truly feels and displaying a bit of an attitude. In spite of this, said assertive attitude never results in him being condescending or brutish, always making clear that he cares for the people close to him, and most of his aggression and smugness is directed at anybody that would look down on others, whether it's him or anybody else.
  • Karmic Jackpot: His status as an All-Loving Hero has frequently resulted in his various acts of kindness and aiding others producing massively beneficial results for himself, especially since the very concept of selfless kindness is so foreign to demons that receiving it makes them joyfully dumbfounded, such as his Androcles' Lion incident with a baby monster bird resulting in both the prestige of befriending a massive and infamous demon beast and the permanent respect of Sabro, or him being Nice to the Waiter resulting in a Big Damn Heroes moment from the entire school faculty when it looked like the Misfit Class weren't going to succeed their goal of acquiring the Royal One classroom.
  • The Leader:
    • He most prominently leads his classmates during his magically-induced wicked phase. During this period, he’s actually one of the rare few who manages to exhibit traits from all four types:
      • Mastermind: He’s extremely adept at analyzing his situation, as well as the people around him. His plan to collect every signature of approval to transfer to the King’s Classroom made full use of his knowledge of the school, putting his classmates in situations where they can utilize themselves to their fullest.
      • Levelheaded: He managed to almost entirely keep his cool when faced with a near impossible task - not only by coming up with a detailed plan to tackle it, but also being willing and able to act when he feels it necessary to. Not to mention that he’s working entirely in the best interest of his classmates, mainly out of a sense of pride he has in both who they are and what they can become.
      • Headstrong: He was absolutely determined to do whatever it took to achieve his goals - even if it meant convincing both Jazz to outright steal their own teacher’s diary so that they could trade it for a signature, and Ameri, a widely-known strict disciplinarian, to show some favor by signing a letter endorsing the class’s room transfer.
      • Charismatic: With a mere speech, he managed to get his entire class to share his ambition of making sure they all stand out in a good way by gaining signatures of approval from the each of the entire Babyls faculty in a mere three days, something that his classmates themselves previously thought to be virtually impossible.
    • Even after the above incident when he is his normal self, his classmates listen and defer to him. They trust and respect him so much that when Amduscias, a judge for the Music Festival and retired member of the Thirteen Crowns, notices the growing anxiety in the class over someone or something missing before their performance, Iruma, in a sleeping stupor from some medicine Opera gave him, states Purson will be there. In seconds, Amduscias notices all the anxiety vanishing. This is acknowledged outright in Chapter 224, where Kalego tells Iruma directly that people view him as the leader of the Misfits Class.
    • He is also seen as the leader of his Battler. During his second-year after Yabashi, Chima, and Sylvia join the Magical Apparatas Battler, he files the paperwork with Ameri about the new members and she calls him "Captain Iruma."
  • Like Parent, Unlike Child: His parents are extremely lazy, selfish, and irresponsible while he is known to be hard-working, kind, and somehow more mature than they are.
  • Long Hair Is Feminine: This is invoked when he takes on his Irumi persona, where the only part of his Paper-Thin Disguise as Irumi that actually makes him look different from his real self is that Mar and Kerori apply hair extensions to make it long enough to reach his hips, with the length helping add to his feminine cuteness. It also helps add to his beautiful and sultry image as Wicked Phase Irumi.
  • Long-Range Fighter: When it comes to combat, Iruma has zero ability for melee fighting beyond dodging attacks until his opponents wear themselves out, with the closest he's ever gotten to genuine physical combat being him suplexing Azz in their fight. Conversely, his capacity for ranged combat, whether it's throwing things, firing mana from his ring, or shooting arrows is pretty strong, with his Super-Reflexes allowing him to easily avoid attacks while he prepares to fire back his own.
  • Luminescent Blush:
    • After his dance with Ameri when he wishes to get to know her better and she hugs him due to wanting the same, he gives a very surprised and flustered reaction to her response, implying that she now means more to him than he initially thought, given when Lied asks him what she is to him the following day, Iruma is unable to properly answer.
    • He blushes deeply during the Heartbreaker Competition when his attacks to merely pin Sheeda to the wall and avoid lethal shots causes clothing damage. When she chastizes Iruma about his weakness in not going for a kill shot, she realizes only her undergarments are still on her body and quietly calls Iruma a perv.
  • Magnetic Hero: Mainly to his class, which even includes some of the teachers! Whenever the class has a shared goal in mind, Iruma manages to inspire them to work harder to achieve it. Sabnock, Kerori, and Balam in particular end up working to become better demons after their encounters with him. Most notably, his two best friends are demons with wildly different backgrounds and personalities, and yet both are equally and feverishly devoted to him.
  • Martial Pacifist: Prior to learning demonic archery, Iruma is skilled in avoiding and deflecting attacks because of his many years of harsh survival training. After becoming skilled in archery, he has no trouble shooting beasts or demonic plants, but refuses to wound a person. He tries instead to shoot the clothing to pin the person and then use magic to knock the person out. Sheeda, infiltrating Babyls as a teacher calls him out on this. She says he needs to overcome his cowardice and resolve to hurt his enemies when he fires.
  • Minor Living Alone: Prior to the series, Iruma used to live in the wilderness by himself, which his parents made him do. Fortunately for Iruma, this eventually became subverted when Sullivan took him away and adopted him as his grandson.
  • Mirror Character: To Kiriwo Amy, who claims Iruma as his Destined Enemy. Both have been abused by their biological parents, were shunned and eventually abandoned by them, are incredibly weak magically with their only natural strength being defensive actions, Kiriwo using barriers while Iruma dodges things, and have magical tools which allow them greater access to magical abilities thanks to the magic of an adoptive figure in their lives, Iruma possessing the Ring of Gluttony imbued by his grandfather's power, and after his escape from Walter Park Baal had a ring-shaped tag made for Kiriwo and imbued with his own power. But whereas Iruma wants to make the Demon World a better, happier place like Bablys and is a Hope Bringer to many close to him, his Mirror is a Hope Crusher who seeks to destroy the stability of the Demon World and make it a chaotic nightmare. The Detection-Warding Glasses he wears to avoid attention on his way to the first day of his second year even cause him to look like Kiriwo.
  • Misery Builds Character: Before his being sold to Sullivan, this is the core of his being. In his youth, he suffers from abusive, neglectful, dangerous parents who would use him in any means to gain money and power. He is forced to work with horrible bosses to get money (and one time is even shot at while running away). All of this teaches Iruma one key fact in life: Despair won't do a damn thing. If he wallows in despair at his misfortune, he would starve in the wilderness. Because of all of these horrific experiences, he refuses to give into despair and fight to survive. When he is confronted with the depths of his Mirror Character's heinous plans, rather than break down at the sight of a close friend being so evil, Iruma gets off the floor, dusts himself off, and keeps fighting.
  • Mistaken for Badass: Most demons who aren't aware of his human nature (i.e. anyone not Sullivan, Opera, Ameri, Balam, Bachiko, and Baal and two of his subordinates) would come to see him as something of a badass who no sells attacks from powerful demons and subverts the wills of those even more powerful than that, all without breaking a sweat. In truth, he's just a very lucky boy with some magical nudges here and there from his newfound "grandfather", who happens to be one of the strongest demons in the Underworld. He does become more of a legitimate badass as the series goes on, though.
  • Moment of Weakness: He shows his vulnerabilities in front of Ameri when his team was eliminated during the Heartbreak Exam, and Ameri knows what he's feeling. She gives him a Heroic Resolve by telling him she plans to ascend to higher ranks, which motivates him enough to do the same and be her equal.
  • Muggle: Iruma is the Token Human of the demon world and, as such, has no innate magical powers.
  • Mundane Luxury: Living in a mansion aside, he was amazed at the realization that he'll be able to have his own room, as well as go to school, like a normal kid.
  • Never Gets Fat: He inexplicably stays thin despite chowing down more food more than the champion of an eating competition. Although according to (a drunk) Clara in Chapter 198, he has been getting a little fat in the stomach area. Iruma openly denies this.
  • Nice Guy: So nice that he suffers from being an Extreme Doormat because of it. Even with his adoptive "grandfather" being one of the highest ranked and wealthiest demons in the netherworld, who constantly spoils and dotes on him, this does nothing to change his kind and caring personality. Even when Arikled puts him through a "wicked phase", Iruma at his absolute worst turns out to still only be a Jerk with a Heart of Gold.
  • Nice Mean And In Between: A downplayed example between him and his two best friends. Iruma obviously fits the role of the Nice one (being the All-Loving Hero and Extreme Doormat he is), and both Azz and Clara are Jerks With Hearts Of Gold, Asmodeous can fit the bill as the Mean one due to starting off as a Smug Super Jerkass but mellowed out after his fight with Iruma a bit and is now undyingly loyal to Iruma who's mostly anti-social and aloof towards anyone that doesn't involve the topic of his "master" while Clara can fit the bill as the "In-Between", she can be sociable and nice towards demons, even if they don't involve Iruma, but is mostly here because of her being herself.
  • Nice to the Waiter: He is nice to everyone, which includes all of the staff at Babyls from the teachers to the janitors. Even when he is in his "Evil Cycle" he cannot refuse the kind request of the maintenance team to help with some gardening. Thanks to that, he was able to get all of the permission slips needed for the transfer to the Royal Classroom when they all come at the last moment to submit their signed slips.
  • No-Sell: To Clara's "Toybox" technique. While he is reverted physically to a small child inside and plays with Clara the fact he has no mana inside of him personally means the mana draining aspect of the magic doesn't harm him at all. He ends up playing with Clara inside to her exhaustion.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: When Iruma successfully gets around Opera's refusal to allow him to attend a Deviculum by getting Azz and his mother to be his protectors during its duration Opera states Iruma is very greedy like his grandfather.
  • Oblivious to Love:
    • Played with. He's definitely not all that familiar with romance thanks to his awful upbringing, and he certainly seems oblivious to the multiple girls who've developed a romantic interest in him, but the story drops a number of hints that he's more clued-in than he lets on, and it's more a matter of his rock-bottom self-esteem preventing him from responding (or causing him to deflect away from the topic) most of the time. Certainly, the massive boost in confidence from his Wicked Phase turns him into quite the ladykiller, and he's a little more sensitive and thoughtful in dealing with serious romantic gestures (especially from Amelie) than you'd expect from someone who's truly Oblivious to Love.
    • When Iruma becomes a second-year, new first-year student Chima Crocell tells Iruma she wants to "seize the number one spot." Iruma thinks she is talking about her academic career and supports her. Ameri and Sylvia, who are watching, both get the girl's actual meaning.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • He has a huge one when he first meets Ameri. When he sees her Hatsukoi Memory manga and reveals that he can read it in front of her, he immediately realizes the fact that such a thing would be impossible in the netherworld, since demons can't read human languages. By that logic, this would mean that he just gave himself away as a human in front of her. Thankfully, due to Ameri's desire to understand what Hatsukoi Memory is about (and later her growing feelings for him), she kept the secret to herself.
    • He later has a few more upon meeting Balam, for more or less the same reason. The mythical creature teacher discovered that Iruma lacked wings, a trait typical of demons, and promptly took him to the other teachers for investigation. Luckily, Arikled managed to fool them into believing that Iruma had them, albeit extremely tiny. Later on, Iruma outright told Balam his secret after being touched by the latter's kindness, before promptly covering his mouth upon realizing what he just did.
    • With only Five-Second Foreshadowing, when his Spider-Sense kicks off at Atori's impending attack Iruma is scared but is able to use his one-second available to defend himself.
  • One-Note Cook: Iruma’s understanding of cooking doesn’t go much further than “put in all the ingredients or anything that’s edible together and warm it up in any way”, without any regard for if the final result actually tastes good or not. This is justified due to the many dangerous situations that his biological parents put him in, Iruma often had to resort to using whatever he can find to survive. While this works for soup and hotpot, following a simple recipe on the other hand is too much for him without proper guidance. Opera has outright banned him from the kitchen in later chapters.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: After his tutor calls him an idiot for following all of her orders, he becomes so frustrated he doesn't change his expression for the rest of the day.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: As "Irumi" the evidol, none of his classmates (including Ameri who was in "her" first concert) somehow didn't realize who "she" was, even Lied despite being a big fan. But during the Evidol Games, every single characternote  we see turn on the TV to watch the Games recognizes him instantly and are all shocked by his appearance there. Though do note that the latter characters are all adults.
  • The Paragon: Most of the demons whom he encounters and/or befriends are inspired to better themselves in the process, and often manage to either form or improve their relationships with others as a result. For some examples of what things would be like without Iruma entering the picture, Asmodeus would remain a haughty, if talented, Jerkass, Clara would remain a weirdo who’d allow people to use her for free stuff, Sabro would get into more trouble trying to prove himself to be as cool as the Demon King and possibly dead, and Ameri would continue to only show her intimidating exterior towards her fellow students. All of them would largely have remained friendless as well, as none of them would’ve likely experienced real friendship to the point of becoming more approachable to others and forming new relationships on their own.
  • Parental Abandonment: The worst possible kind there is at that. Granted, things went very swell for Iruma, but what kind of parents would gleefully sell the soul of their son to a demon in exchange for money?
  • Please, Don't Leave Me: Tearfully says this word for word in chapter 123.
  • Power Gives You Wings: Any time he uses the full extent of his Gluttony Ring-granted magic power, whether blasting it directly from the ring or channeling it through his bow, he'll temporarily sprout a magnificently large pair of demon wings to demonstrate just how badass he's being at that moment, before they vanish when he calms down.
  • Punny Name: The kanji for “Iruma” (入間) is nearly identical to the kanji for “human” (人間).
    R-Y
  • Rags to Riches:
    • In the human world, he was forced to work constantly (even as a child!) in order to make ends meet due to his parents being extremely neglectful and putting their financial burdens on him. Once Sullivan buys and adopts him, however, he's constantly showered with love, gifts, and food - things Iruma had previously never known about.
    • For a more literal take on this trope, Iruma goes from having to constantly fend for himself to survive to living in the mansion of one of the most powerful figures in the netherworld, complete with his own butler!
  • Rags to Royalty: He starts out as being forced to work and fend for himself to being a Demon King Candidate.
  • Rank Up: Due to the oddity of being given the Ring of Gluttony instead of a starting demon rank from the ranking owl, Iruma's forced to start at Rank 1 (Aleph).
    • Iruma achieves Rank 2 (Bet) by winning the Cannonball Execution exam, in which Iruma proved to Kalego that he showed good judgement on attack and defense.
    • Iruma achieves Rank 3 (Gimmel) by winning the Battler Party's Tricky Prize; a newly introduced Battler Party reward where despite one specific team, the Magic Tools Research Division, breaking many school rules, it can't be ignored that they were able to win the overwhelming support of the students through their efforts. Kalego states that the Tricky Prize is a rank increase for said division's representative, which fellow division members, Azz and Clara, push Iruma forward as their leader to accept it.
    • Iruma achieves Rank 4 (Daleth) by winning the Harvest Festival alongside Lied. The two of them became said festival's young Kings by finding the Legendary Leaf worth 100,000 points and getting it to bloom.
    • Iruma achieves Rank 5 (Hé) by winning the Music Festival with his Misfit class to the point of impressing Amduscias, a master of music. While it's not outright stated why he ended up with a higher rank compared to everyone else in his class, it's implied pretty heavily that its the sign of him being the leader of the Misfits that helped everyone in his class achieve Rank 4 (Daleth) by the end of just their first year at Babyls.
  • Really Gets Around: In reality, he doesn't, but the fact that others have noticed a lot of female demons around him caused rumors to reach the teachers that he has ten girlfriends.
  • Ring of Power: The Gluttony Ring allows him to both absorb and expel magic. This allows him to masquerade as a demon by making it seem as if he possesses innate magical abilities.
  • The Rival: Sabro considers him to be one for the position of Demon King. That said, they are very much friendly with each other and will happily help each other towards a common goal.
  • Rousing Speech: During the Music Festival arc, Amducias, former member of the Thirteen Crowns and head judge of the festival listens to the heartbeats of the entire Misfit Class. He recogizes their anxiety at something missing and frightens them further by pointing out how they will never gain his approval and respect if they are missing some key part. While in a sleepy stupor, Iruma says five words, "Purson-kun will come for sure." Immediately his classmates mood changes, they become firm in their victory and their anxiety vanishes.
  • Saying Sound Effects Out Loud: When he's reading Hatsukoi Memory to Ameri.
  • Secret-Keeper:
    • Due to Iruma noticing Kuromu's thumb-in-hand trait being similar to a certain classmate, along with Kuromu giving away some pretty obvious hints during their meet-up, Iruma ends up as one of the few people that knows that his misfit classmate, Kerori, is the famous evidol, Kuromu.
    • Due to the Evidol Games, he also knows about Ameri and Lied helping Team Kuromu out as evidols "Amelie" and "Lindy."
  • Sham Supernatural: After being adopted by a demon and sent to an all-demon school, ordinary human Iruma has to pretend to be a demon so that he doesn't get eaten by his classmates.
  • She Is Not My Girlfriend: States this to Arikled when he assumes the opposite about Ameri and Clara:
Arikled: Lucky you, Iru-boy. What a girlfriend you have!
Iruma: Girl-! You've got it wrong!
Arikled: (transforms into a version of Clara) Ah, the weird one?
Iruma: That's not it either! Please stop this!
  • Sheltered Aristocrat: This is what other demons think Iruma is since for all they know, he only lived a sheltered life with his rich and powerful grandfather, Sullivan, which is boosted due to Iruma's surprise at things that are mundane for demons.
  • Ship Tease:
    • He gets a considerable amount of this with Ameri. He's helped Ameri save her position as Student Council President by reminding her of her ambitions, something which he admires about her. From their very first meeting onwards, some of their interactions end up directly mirroring scenes from Hatsukoi Memory, the shoujo romance manga that he reads to her. Case in point, the two shared an intimate moment on the rooftop of a hotel following the terrorist attack at Walter Park, where he (likely not realizing the implications) asks her out on a date after he talked about his ambitions with her. Said date ends with him giving her a Bridal Carry, and the two later bake cookies together (with Opera's help, as they both are quite bad at it). Chapter 180 features the two in a dance at the Deviculium and with him admitting he'd like to get to know her better has her hugging him nearly confessing her feelings for him. She tries to take back what she said, but it shows Iruma blushing heavily from her words. The next day even has Lied asking him what Ameri is to him with Iruma not even sure, heavily implying her feelings may be more than reciprocrated, which seems to be the case as Ameri walks down the hallway with a big smile on her face and renewed vigor at her feelings for him.
    • He also gets some of this with Clara. Most notably, when Clara simply acted like herself while trying to seduce him (after she had previously tried more traditional methods), she manages to make his heart skip a beat. The "Clara's Toybox" trap is likely the biggest example of this trope between them. Clara grabs Iruma and holds him into a tight embrace, their faces close while Iruma's heart is beating in the background. After playing in a magical imaginary land Clara actually confesses her feelings, leaving Iruma flustered, embarrassed, and curious as to what exactly Clara meant in her confession.
  • Shipper on Deck: At the receiving end of this. Throughout the story, several characters notice Iruma's closeness with Ameri, and they more or less support his relationship with her. It goes without saying that even Sully himself sees this and refers Ameri as his lady in chapter 292.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: Many of the girls interested in him are attracted to him due to his kind and selfless personality, which is basically alien to the demon world since demons tend to be more selfish.
  • Sobriquet Sex Switch: When acting as an evidol, he goes by the slightly-changed name of "Irumi".
  • Social Services Does Not Exist: His parents forced him into working various jobs and dealing with various situations that could quite easily kill even experienced adults, let alone somebody like Iruma who has been doing stuff like this since he was barely able to walk and think for himself, especially since it is illegal in Japan for companies to hire anybody younger than 15. It becomes very questionable why none of his co-workers ever bothered to call social services in order to look into why his parents have been sending him off to do these kinds of things.
  • Springtime for Hitler: All of his attempts to not stand out fail miserably, and getting expelled only ended up adding to his reputation throughout the school as a badass, as well as making him an honor student.
  • Spider-Sense: As he narrates in the opening of chapter 261, Iruma explains how he has lived a life constantly in danger. As a result, his body has instinctively developed an awareness when something threatening is approaching and his years of experience can tell him how much time he has and what the best course of defense is.
  • Stepford Smiler: He does his best to act as The Pollyanna, going through life trying to see the best out of every person and situation, but occasionally he shows that he has a lot of deep-seated issues caused by the way his parents "raised" him, and there are times where, despite his best efforts, he breaks down in tears out of fear and sadness over everything that's happened in his life which led up to where he is now. He always gets back up afterward, and since coming to the Netherworld he's developed a system of love and support to help him maintain and strengthen the will to keep going, but his fears and traumas always remain in the back of his mind.
  • Stranger in a Strange School: He is the only human in a school for demons. While the school teaches everything a normal school would teach: math, science, biology, etc, it also teaches stuff no normal human would have to deal with, such as the fundamentals of magic.
  • Stronger Than They Look: Downplayed as his short stature and thin appearance, he's able to carry Ameri, who is close to twice his height, bridal style. Something that she very much liked. Iruma used the spell Fractal to make Ameri lighter and easier to carry.
  • Summon Bigger Fish: After the events of the Heartbreaker Competition, it is clear to the adults that know he's human in Iruma's life someone is targetting him. When he wishes to attend the Deviculum with Ameri, Opera refuses as no one will be there to guard Iruma at all times. Sullivan will be busy at the party and unable to protect him at all times, Opera is tasked with guarding the school, and Balam is off on another mission. Strong as Ameri is, she is inadequate against the strongest demons in the realm. Rather than give up, Iruma calls Azz, who calls on his mother to help guard Iruma at the festivities. After demonstrating her protective powers to Opera, they relent and permit Iruma to go.
  • Super-Reflexes: Due to him having been in life-threatening situations for as long as he could walk, he is extremely good at dodging. This is described as his Evade stat being infinite while his Attack stat is zero.
  • Tareme Eyes: Befitting of his Nice Guy personality. During Arikled's magic-induced wicked phase, they become Tsurime Eyes instead.
  • Taught by Experience: His ability to adapt during the Harvest Festival is due to having to survive in the wilderness by himself no thanks to his god-awful parents. In fact, he was able to survive the Harvest Festival because of that experience that he teaches Lied what to do when they need to survive. In contrast, several students outside the Misfit class could barely survive an entire day, let alone at night, and gave up once day two started while Iruma and Lied were able to function properly.
  • Tears of Joy: His 15th birthday results in this. Being surrounded by loved ones and his friends, all of which are giving him gifts and genuine affection, something he never received from neither his parents nor anyone else in the human world, causes Iruma to be overwhelmed by all the love and cry from happiness.
  • Tempting Fate: He tries to constantly avoid drawing attention to himself, especially after hearing his fellow demonic schoolmates singing about eating humans. Unfortunately, the things that happen around him end up drawing more attention to him, such as when he thinks being given the lowest rank wouldn't make him stand out. (Normally this may have happened, but in this case the school newspaper wrote an article about what he did during the ranking test.) Everyone being subjected to his ring's demonic howling didn't help matters either. His grandfather (the principal of the school and one of the strongest demons in the netherworld) will also unintentionally draw attention to him as well, such as taking him to school in a fancy wagon, complete with Opera rolling out a red carpet and announcing that he's arrived.
  • Tiny Guy, Huge Girl:
    • The Tiny Guy to Ameri’s Huge Girl. Ameri (usually) stands nearly two heads taller than him when he’s standing, and the two are closer in height when she's the one who's sitting down. This causes complications during their “date".
    • This gets brought up again during his dance with Ameri at a ball, where he can't dance with her properly due to her being so tall. She solves this by having the two dance on the steps to even out the height.
    • The January 2021 databook clarifies it: Iruma is a diminutive 158cm (5'2")note  while Ameri is 190cm (6'3").
  • Tiny Schoolboy: His actual height notwithstanding, Iruma’s one of the shortest boys in all of Babyls Demon School. Possibly justified by his physical growth being stunted through a combination of his parents poor treatment of him growing up, having to fend for himself since he could walk, and having very poor eating habitsnote  resulting in some level of malnutrition. It is implied he will grow normally now that he has a more healthy living environment.
  • Token Human: The only human in the entire series (disregarding both his parents and minor human characters from flashbacks, since they are never seen presently interacting with him in the story).
  • Took a Level in Badass: After learning how to use the Ring of Gluttony properly and raising his rank, he's learned how to use magic more efficiently. Even more so is that by the Harvest Festival Arc, he now is skilled in archery and continues to make a name for himself in and out of school.
  • Twice Shy: After his dance with Ameri at the Deviculum Iruma blushes to the point he can't even look at her, while Ameri is shocked at the same time, but also due to her discovering her feelings for him may be more than reciprocrated than it looks.
  • Universally Beloved Leader: In contrast to how he was treated in the Human world, Iruma is highly respected by his teachers and students alike, to the point that many view him as both The Leader and The Heart of the Misfits Class, who rally behind him in moments of crisis. This actually comes in handy on his part when all the faculty members willingly give him the signatures the class needs in order to move into the Royal One dorms.
  • Unluckily Lucky: It's very difficult to know where Iruma's luck actually lies.
    • In many ways, he can be considered unlucky: His terrible parents made him learn how to survive unfortunate circumstances since he was a toddler, and even after he's adopted by Sullivan, he's almost constantly getting into dangerous situations. All of his attempts to stay unnoticed (out of fear towards being eaten if anybody figures out he's a human) fail in ways that make him stand out more and more. This has happened often enough for a few demons to eventually catch onto the fact that he’s a human.
    • However, he can also be considered equally lucky: Following his adoption by Sullivan, several things in his life seem to chance upon going happily for him, such as gaining Asmodeus and Clara (among many others) as friends, speeding through the demonic ranks due to stumbling upon various things and situations, and winning prizes for lottery-type things quite a few times. Virtually all of the demons that know or suspect that he’s a human have kept it a secret out of the sheer affection that they have for him.
  • Unwanted Harem: Over the course of the series he gains the love of Ameri, the crushes of Clara and Kerori, her little sister Chima, and a handful of other girls in the school such as Elizabetta find him cute. However, Iruma is rather uncomfortable with this due to him never experiencing such concepts of feelings for girls, as a result of his harsh lifestyle. Lied even points out to his face at one point how he's practically got a harem after him (via Ameri, Clara, Kerori and Elizabetta) despite Iruma's protesting that he's just friends with all of them. His second year even has a first year Garson call him out that many talk about him having a harem despite Iruma denying this. Which just leaves Garson even more terrified that he'll get dragged into the harem too. That said, it's all played for laughs, as Iruma has only only ever showed any real interest in Ameri, he seems largely unaware of his growing reputation as a casanova to the school.
  • Wall Pin of Love: He does this completely unintentionally when trying to get Ameri to sign a letter of recommendation during his Evil Cycle. She signs it and admits her mind went blank after he did that while he thought throughout the conversation he was on a razor's edge.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: The three deadly phrases: "Please!", "Help me!", and "I beg you!". Iruma is physically and psychologically compelled to lend a hand whenever somebody speaks any of these words. Even when influenced by Arikled to be "evil" and without inhibitions, Iruma can only really resist the urge before begrudgingly giving help when asked a couple more times.
  • When He Smiles: His genuine heart-felt smile is so adorable, it melts the hearts of demons! To say nothing of the fanbase.
  • White Sheep: Exaggerated. His parents are both greedy sociopaths with a Lack of Empathy, Iruma's an All-Loving Hero and a teenage example of The Paragon.
  • Wholesome Crossdresser: Regularly wears a frilly dress as his "Irumi" persona, usually to help Crocell with her idol work.
  • Wistful Amnesia: It is unclear if it is because of his human nature or something else, but he has moments of deja vu when hanging around Sheeda when she has infiltrated Babylys on Baal's orders, despite the fact Wett's ability should be able to completely erase all traces of the Fingers. When he tells her about this, she forcefully warns him to never speak of it again to anyone, for fear that Atori would kidnap him, as Baal also ordered them to do if Iruma got suspicious or learned of anything. He later refers to Sheeda saving him on more than one occassion to Balam with him flashing back to her saving him from Atori and a more faded moment when she first saves him from the demons in their Evil Cycle in Walter Park.
  • Worthy Opponent: He's seen as this to Sabro after he saved him from the Leader of Kanakiri Valley. He saves Sabro not with strength and beating the demon bird, but compassion and kindness Iruma gives to the leader's injured offspring and now the offspring is helping them in return.
  • You Remind Me of X:
    • During the Music Festival when Iruma plays the piano Amduscias finds Iruma's playing of the piano horrible and distracting from the otherwise perfect performance. However, as he criticizes Iruma, he nearly breaks down as the look of Iruma's pure joy at playing with Soi and his friends and the sound of Iruma's heart reminds Amduscias of Derkila and playing with his former friend.
    • While Iruma doesn't hear Robin's mental thoughts, the fellow archer first notices Iruma ready to snipe him and mistakes the energy and power to be like Bachiko Babartos's.
  • Your Size May Vary: Poor Iruma can't seem to keep a consistent height other than “short”. At the start of the series, he's taller than Clara, reaching Asmodeus's shoulders and Ameri's chest level. In later manga chapters, however, Clara seems to match him in height, and Asmodeus has two heads on him. Especially noticeable with Ameri, where he manages to fluctuate between her navel and her hips - on the same page.
