    ”The Heroine”

  • Action Girl: Upgrades to this during Saitou's Kekkonroku Drama CD. Specifically, during the latter half as she stayed and decided to fight together with him.
  • Age-Gap Romance: Potentially with Kondou and Hijikata, as both characters are in their early 30s at the start of Mokuhiroku while she is implied to be of the age of 18 to 20. In Hiyokuroku, she can also potentially have this with Yamanami Keisuke (who is at the same age range as both Kondou and Hijikata) and Itou Kashitarou (who is in his early thirties).
  • And Now for Someone Completely Different: The heroine in Gyofuuroku is not the same heroine as the heroine from the Mokuhiroku volumes and its continuity. The heroine in Gyofuuroku is more prone to being clumsy and lacks the Determinator trait that the heroine from Mokuhiroku and its continuity has.
  • Bad Liar: Noted to be one in several installments.
  • Beautiful Dreamer: Yamazaki comments on her beauty even in sleep when he visits her during his Mokuhiroku route.
  • Broken Bird: Suffers a Break the Cutie experience through the death of her parents in the aftermath of the Ikedaya affair and spent a good chunk of time mourning until one of the Shinsengumi members warm up to her.
  • Determinator: One of her strongest points is that she is easily strong-willed and will get back up on her feet to try again. This is one of the reasons why some of the Shinsengumi men started to like her. Especially with Saitou, who had come to love her for this.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": Several. She is simply called as "Woman" in some drama CDs (Saitou in Mokuhiroku, for one), while Kondou calls her "Miss" and Nagakura calls her "Little bird".
  • Featureless Protagonist: Since it's a situation CD. All that we know from descriptions are that she has pale skin, long hair and, in Hiyokuroku, described as decently pretty. The closest thing to a physical appearance of her is this official art in the staff's old Wasurenagusa blog.
  • Friend to All Living Things: She's been noted to feed common critters around headquarters such as birds and cats. They come back frequently for her meals.
  • The Hero Dies: Gets this treatment twice in Kekkonroku. First, she dies at the end of Harada's story, killed by the Shinsengumi's enemies, and second, at Nagakura's, having fallen ill.
  • Mistaken for Prostitute: Sanosuke certainly thought the heroine was during one of their first encounters, or at least thought she'd also be available for sexual favors because of the fact that she's the only woman in headquarters.
  • Mistaken for Spies: In the beginning of certain routes, the heroine will be accused of being a spy for the Choshu by some of the captains.
  • Naïve Everygirl: The heroine, of course. She has little experience with men and only truly got to know them after her parents died. She's also rather plain and average, but she doesn't seem to know when men are interested in her.
  • No Name Given: Obviously. The closest thing you can hear of her being addressed is based on the nicknames the Shinsengumi characters give to her or what they call her.
  • Raven Hair, Ivory Skin: Despite coming from a plain background, nearly all of her love interests comment on her beautiful pale skin and dark hair, marking her as a Japanese beauty.
  • Stock Shoujo Heroine: While she isn't influential or very aggressive herself, the Shinsengumi members value her for her feminine strengths, such as her tidiness, her cooking, and her comparitive purity. She's also noted to be good with animals, and is very attractive despite knowing nothing about her own beauty.
  • Tomboy: The heroine may be this, as she sees no problem in taking up swordsmanship in order to get back at the Choshu, she's generally outspoken and talks back to the other figureheads, and she's uncouth in terms of eating.
  • The Voiceless: Due to being a situation CD, the heroine has no voice.

Introduced in Mokuhiroku

    Saitou Hajime

Third Squadron Captain

Voiced by: Naozumi Takahashi

  • Break His Heart to Save Him: Saitou attempted this to break away from the heroine to protect her during Kekkonroku. It didn't last long when the heroine decided to stay regardless.
  • Declaration of Protection: Towards the heroine in Kekkonroku.
  • Does Not Like Women: Downplayed, he can interact with them just fine, but prefers not to interact with them for a longer time period than necessary. Mokuhiroku is a good example, as he often mentions how annoying women can be whenever he gets the chance. He makes an exception with the heroine over time, though.
  • First Guy Wins: He is chronologically the first Shinsengumi character to interact with the heroine, as he rescued her and brought her to Shinsengumi headquarters after the Ikedaya affair. Should one follow through his Situation CD route, then he is this.
  • Hidden Depths: Among other things, he is good at doing tongue twisters.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Saitou initially comes across as rude at first, but in actuality he is stern, has a strong sense of justice and cares for the Shinsengumi members.
  • Not So Above It All: The Animate Tokuten drama CD for Mokuhiroku reveals that Saitou is prone to joining in on hijinks as much as some of the cheerful members when prompted.
  • Rescue Romance: Hajime was the one that found the Heroine at the start, and in Mokuhiroku she seems very fixated on him from the beginning. He's mentioned offhand in every other member's CD in relation to her.
  • The Stoic: Generally serious and a no-nonsense person. All that said, he is Not So Above It All.
  • Teacher/Student Romance: In a way. Saitou taught the heroine swordsmanship when she asked him to teach her at the start of his Mokuhiroku volume and along the way, they eventually fall in love.
  • Tsundere: A straightforward one, as he is prone to getting frustrated with the Heroine and complimenting her in the same breath.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: The Stellaworth short stories reveal that he doesn't do well with ghosts, as much as he likes to deny it.

    Okita Souji
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/graph_chara1_3.jpg
First Squadron Captain

Voiced by: Tatsuhisa Suzuki

  • Bittersweet Ending: Big time. Due to his Tuberclosis, he acknowledges that he won't live long at the end of the volumes' timeline but vows to make most of the time he has for the heroine.
  • Cruel to Be Kind: Towards the end of Souji's first two CDs, he admits that he's mean to the heroine because he doesn't want her being hung up on a man about to die.
  • Defrosting Ice King: Starts out cold, dismissive and rude towards the heroine but eventually warms up to her and let his heart slip at times, such as when Hijikata and Kondou are involved in a conversation.
  • Hidden Heart of Gold: Okita has a sharp tongue for a sick man, but he does worry about Kondou and Hijikata and wants to put his all into serving the Shinsengumi. It only becomes more apparent as the CDs go on.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: He does start to warm up to the heroine in time, but purposefully treat her cruelly so she could be happy with another person who would live a longer life than he is. It didn't stick should one go through his Drama CD as the heroine stays with him no matter what.
  • Just Friends: Okita and the heroine's relationship in Gyofuuroku, though as time passes it's clear that the trope gets subverted. Despite this he still insists that they're only friends by the time he's about to leave.
  • Undying Loyalty: Souji's loyalty to the Shinsengumi also goes hand in hand with his loyalty to Kondou and Hijikata, both of whom he wants to continue being of use to. We get to see how he comes to devote himself to Kondou in Gyofuuroku.
  • Your Days Are Numbered: Just like the historical Okita, he is ailing from Tuberclosis and is on threat of dying from sickness because of it.

    Kondou Isami
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/graph_chara3.jpg
Leader of the Shinsengumi

Voiced by: Kazuhiko Inoue

  • Companion Cube: Kondou's sword, Kotetsu, is sometimes treated as a separate entity but kept close to him at all times. When he and the heroine make love in Kekkonroku and Kotetsu falls down, he treats it as if he were making his child turn away from the deed.
  • The Ghost: Is Put on a Bus throughout the Hiyokuroku volumes and is only mentioned.
  • The Leader: Of the Shinsengumi itself.
  • Never Got to Say Goodbye: While in prison, Kondou mentions that he regrets not saying goodbye (or any other romantic thing) to the heroine before running off the night after they made love.
  • Sweet Tooth: Has a love for sweets that is well-known throughout the Shinsengumi as a whole. He's still under the impression that nobody knows yet.

    Toudou Heisuke
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/graph_chara5_0.jpg
Eighth Squadron Captain

Voiced by: Hiro Shimono

  • Belligerent Sexual Tension: With the heroine should one go through his Drama CD route, as the heroine is far more prone to hit and touch him at certain points.
  • Heroic Bastard: He is the illegitimate son of a daimyou but sides with the Shinsengumi.
  • Start My Own: One of the four members that goes on to form the Gouryou-Eiji. His storyline in the first three CD series is about leaving the Shinsengumi behind.

    Hijikata Toshizou
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/graph_chara4.jpg
Vice-Captain of the Shinsengumi

Voiced by: Yoshimasa Hosoya

  • The Dreaded: He is the Demon Vice Captain after all. He has such a reputation that scares many.
  • The Ghost: Is only mentioned in Hiyokuroku and Gyofuuroku, with no drama CD in sight in those series.
  • Hands-On Approach: One of the bonus drama tracks for Mokuhiroku has Hijikata teach the illiterate heroine how to write. He does this with a kanji that contains all of the eight main brush strokes used in symbol writing, but also uses the opportunity to flirt with the heroine and put his hands on her while she's trying not to get distracted.

    Yamazaki Susumu
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/graph_chara8.jpg

Voiced by: Toshiyuki Morikawa

  • Crazy Jealous Guy: He's the type of love interest that would rather not be separated from his lover on punishment of death—hers, not his. When he spots the heroine feeding Saitou, he burns with jealousy so much that he gives her an aphrodisiac to have his way with her.
  • Last Guy Wins: Yamazaki is usually the last of the Shinsengumi members to get his Drama CD disk released and the last to officially interact with the heroine in Mokuhiroku. Should one continue on with his drama CD route, he is this trope.
  • The Medic: In addition to his surveillance duties, he also plays a small time apothecary for the Shinsengumi. He has access to the whole squad's medicine and was able to treat the heroine's lingering injury from the Ikedaya incident.
  • Vague Age: His age is listed as "Unknown".

Introduced in Kekkonroku

    Harada Sanosuke
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/graph_chara2_5.jpg
Tenth Squadron Captain

Voiced by: Shinnosuke Tachibana

  • Belated Love Epiphany: While he wasn't entirely sure he was in love with the heroine in Kekkonroku, he was definitely on the way the night they made love. Tragically, he's only fully able to comprehend his feelings for her once she is killed in front of him.
  • Blood Knight: Nothing can truly satiate him outside of battle.
  • Characterization Marches On: Initially introduced as a Jerkass in Kekkonroku and hid a lot of his thoughts and feelings, he had become much more kinder to the heroine in Hiyokuroku.
  • Downer Ending: Gets hit with this hard in comparison to the other Shinsengumi members during Kekkonroku. An enemy gets the jump on him and the heroine when they're taking a walk together, and manages to fatally wound her. Harada is enraged with grief, and promises to wipe out all of his enemies on the battlefield, and then kill himself to be with the heroine once all is said and done. This is in stark contrast to how the rest of the characters had a Bittersweet Ending at best during Kekkonroku.
  • The Eeyore: He takes the chaotic era he's been thrust into and only sees people dying pointlessly for beliefs he neither has use for nor cares about. The world is a World Half Empty to him, and the only thing that can bring him joy is the sight of his opponents' blood spilling. Even some Shinsengumi members find him to be a drag emotionally.
  • Hidden Depths: In Kekkonroku's official tokuten CD, Harada shows surprising competence in acupuncture and massage. He mentions that he's gotten praise from many of the men in headquarters for it, including Hijikata of all people.
  • Odd Friendship: The gloomy and cynical Harada is friends with local flirt Nagakura.

    Nagakura Shinpachi
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/graph_chara6_7.jpg
Second Squadron Captain

Voiced by: Tomoaki Maeno

  • Bittersweet Ending: His Kekkonroku debut CD ends with the heroine dying from illness.
  • Characterization Marches On: While Nagakura is a flirt in both Kekkonroku and Hiyokuroku, he's much more openly affectionate with the heroine in Hiyokuroku.
  • Drowning My Sorrows: Happens in his Kekkonroku route. When Nagakura heard of Heisuke's desire to leave the Shinsengumi, the former tried to drink away the anger he felt at the possibility of fighting Heisuke as the opposition. Despite his gorging, Nagakura never got drunk off of it all, making the feeling worse. The events happen differently in Hiyokuroku, though.
  • Grow Old with Me: The subject of Nagakura's proposal in Hiyokuroku. He talks about how he wants their married life to be so joyful that they won't even realize they've gotten old until much later on.
  • Ladykiller in Love: Nagakura makes a point of telling the heroine that he's a womanizer and gets women to fall in love with him by being kind to them. However, as he gets to know the heroine he genuinely finds a soft spot for her.
