Fort Haven and it's residents

Fort Haven is the safest place for miles around, and is constantly visited by travelers.

     In general
  • Meaningful Name: A location variant, as Fort Haven is a very safe place in general.

     Benjamin

Click here to see him before he dyed his hair
A scavenger who travels the wasteland alone, who comes to stay at Fort Haven to do jobs for his childhood friend Anne, who he discovers is living there.
  • DefrostingIceKing: Starts the story fairly cold yet civil, but slowly thaws the longer he stays in Fort Haven.
  • Disaster Scavengers: Looks around the wasteland for supplies, and when he gets to Fort Haven, starts doing scavenging jobs for Anne.
  • Fingerless Gloves: He wears these.
  • Foil: To Felix. Both of them usually work alone, are good friends with Anne and know her father Axton from when they were children, are good fighters, and left their mothers when they were kids, and had to survive in the wasteland on their own.Unlike Felix, Benjamin is less ready to accept working with new people, uses a ranged weapon(a gun), and left his mother who cared for him only when she passed away, and for most of his life from that point on was surviving on his own, and he is aware that Axton is Anne's father.
  • In the Hood: Was first seen wearing his blue jacket with the hood drawn up.As the story progresses, he wears it up less and less however.
  • Not a Morning Person: If this scene is any indication:
Jeff:cheerily*Oh, hey!Ready to get to work?
    Benjamin:(Looking annoyed). . .
(slams the door to his apartment shut)
  • Sole Survivor: He is the only living member of the last group he was in.It's why he has such a hard time letting himself join up with new people.
  • Tragic Keepsake:An unusual variation with his green hair.He dyed it green after members of his old group who had dyed their hair green were unsuccessful in convincing him to join in, later died that same day.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: He had no way of knowing that going on a hunt with the only gun that had ammo in it would leave his old group with nothing to defend themselves from the Giant Mutant Lizard that attacked them while he wasn't there.

     Jeff
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/wastelanders_anonymous_jeff_picture.png
An upbeat, friendly zombie who Benjamin saves from a mutant animal. He goes with Benjamin to Fort Haven to try to find his stolen stuff, and ends up staying as well.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Has blond hair, and is one of the nicest, if not, the nicest character in the story.
  • ImTakingHimHomeWithMe: Jeff provokes this reaction from a lot of WA fans due to how downright adorable he can be.
  • Innocently Insensitive: His childlike curiosity can cause him to ask personal questions about people's pasts.
  • Kind Hearted Cat Lover: Jeff absolutely adores cats, and is overjoyed when Benjamin gets him a kitten.
  • Mutants: As a zombie, he is classified as a "Class Z" mutant, because not everyone who dies reanimates, and thus are a rare type of mutant.
  • Nice Guy: Is very friendly and kind.
  • Our Zombies Are Different: While he is undead, he is friendly, his skin is only slightly discolored, and he isn't showing any signs of decay, and is considered a "Class Z" mutant.
  • The Pollyanna: Despite being undead, Jeff retains his child-like optimism.
  • Scars Are Forever: As a Zombie who cant heal, the cut on his face won't ever go away.

     Anne
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/wastelanders_anonymous_anne_picture.png
A mutant living at Fort Haven who runs a shop of odds and ends, and often gives jobs to people to make runs to get things from the wasteland for her.She is Benjamin's childhood friend and the one who suggests he stay in town.
  • Collector of the Strange: Somewhat downplayed with her collection of pre-apocalypse items. They're not strange, but they're not really useful in a post-apocalyptic world either. However, things do get strange when Benjamin starts talking to someone through a walkie talkie of hers.
  • Daddy's Girl: Loves her father, and he loves her.
    Axton: Heyyy, sweetheart!
    Anne:(Happily) Oh! Daddy!
  • Mutants: Is a Class E (extreme mutations) mutant who looks like a normal human, save for the tentacles coming out of her back.
  • Mundane Utility: Treats the mass of large tentacles coming out of her back as if they're just some extra arms she has.
  • Princess Phase: Had one when she was a kid.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Downplayed with her father Axton; the only thing about the two of them that looks remotely similar is their hairstyle. Wordof God says she looks more like her mother.
  • Quest Giver: Is something of a non-video game version of this, hiring people like Benjamin to do jobs for her that involve going out into the wasteland to find things for her shop, many trips of which end up revealing things about the main characters.

     Felix
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/wastelanders_anonymous_felix_picture.png
A Plague doctor who lives at Fort Haven. He is a friend of Anne's.
  • Abusive Parents: His mother was not happy knowing that he is a mutant, so he was physically and verbally abused by her.
  • Badass Long Robe: His Plague Doctor robe.
  • Cool Mask:His Plague Doctor mask. It breaks in a skirmish with some creatures early on in the story, and he has not replaced it yet, most likely because of his suspension.
  • Cute Little Fangs: Has these from time to time, usually when he forgets to conceal his Scary Teeth.
  • Foil: To Benjamin. Both of them usually work alone, are good friends with Anne and know her father Axton from when they were children, are good fighters, and left their mothers when they were kids, and had to survive in the wasteland on their own.Unlike Benjamin, he is open to working with new people, uses melee weapons(his scythes), and had to leave his abusive mother while she was alive, but did not have to survive on his own for long as he was quickly found by Axton, who dropped him off at Fort Haven where he grew up and presumably befriend Anne, but somehow didn't know that Axton was Anne's father until several years later.
  • It Was a Gift: His Plague Doctor's hat, which was given to him by Axton to make Felix feel better when he was being dropped off at Fort Haven when he was a child.
  • Mutants: Is a Class M (minor mutations) mutant, with sharp teeth and pointed fingers being the only visible difference he has from normal humans.
  • Nice Hat: His Plague Doctor top hat.
  • Parental Abandonment: Inverted, as he had to leave his mother because of the she was abusing him.
  • Scary Teeth: His teeth are sharp and pointy, a trait he has due to being a mutant. Word of God says he feels insecure about them, so he tries to hide this fact about himself. When he is shocked, his teeth sometimes show, leading to Cute Little Fangs.
  • Sinister Scythe: Dual wields Plague Doctor scythes. He forgets one of them in a dangerous place, and it contributes to the decision to have him suspended.
  • The Voiceless: As a Plague Doctor, he does not speak. Until his mask comes off, and he is subsequently suspended.

     Eva
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/wastelanders_anonymous_eva_picture.png
A friend of Anne's who goes into the wasteland often, and occasionally does jobs for Anne.Several other people find her. . . Strange, to say the least.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Is considered weird or scary by several other characters, and doesn't always seem to take things seriously, but as a scavenger is very good at sneaking, climbing, fighting, and accessing dangerous situations.
  • *Click* Hello: How she is introduced.
  • Cold-Blooded Torture: Eva does this during a flashback to the people who killed her parents. When she thinks back on this after meeting one of the dead men's father, she tells Benjamin that she's a terrible person.
  • Disaster Scavengers: Often does scavenging jobs in the wasteland for Anne.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Can offend others very easily, but it's because she's usually having to much fun messing with people to notice.
  • It Amused Me: A lot of her actions have this as her motive.
  • Knife Nut: When dealing with the people who killed her parents.
  • Moral Event Horizon: She seems to consider her torture and killing of the people who murdered her parents to have been this for her, as she tells Benjamin that she's a terrible person, and that he should keep that in mind.
  • Nerves of Steel: Even when being held hostage at gunpoint, she makes fun of the assailant with a smile.
  • The Nicknamer: She has a nickname for just about everyone, although she'll drop or change them if she realizes it makes them feel bad.
  • Parental Abandonment: Her parents were murdered when she was young.

The Plague Doctors

"An order of people who basically keep peace within communities. And a force to be reckoned with.Creepy, silent, don't usually remove their masks. . ."

Benjamin, on Plague doctors.

The closest thing to law enforcement in the wasteland, The Plague doctors are a well known yet mysterious order whose members are both feared and respected for the work they do.

     The Order in general
  • Cool Mask: All of the Plague Doctors have these as a part of their uniform.
  • Badass Long Robe: Regular Plague Doctors wear black robes as a part of their uniforms, and the Plague Doctor leaders wear red
  • Nice Hat: They all have Top hats as a part of their uniforms.
  • The Order: The point of their order is more or less public safety.Plague doctor roles shown so far are:
    • Regular Plague Doctors: Police the towns they're in, investigating crimes and dealing with criminals.
    • Wandering Plague Doctors: Travel around the wasteland to make it safer for people to travel through.According to Axton, the rules are more lenient for them.
  • Sinister Scythe: These are standard Plague Doctor weapons.
  • Visible Silence: Since Plague Doctors do not talk when in uniform, this is the only thing in their speech bubbles.
  • The Voiceless: None of the Plague Doctors talk. After Felix's mask breaks, he reveals that due to taking a vow of silence, they are not allowed to talk when they're in uniform

     Felix
A Plague doctor working in Fort Haven. For information on Felix, see his folder in "Fort Haven and it's residents" above.

     Axton
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/axton_for_tvtropes.png
"That was sure close, huh?"
A wandering Plague doctor, and Anne's father.
  • Badass Long Robe: Wears a standard Plague doctor's robe.
  • Cool Mask: Has a standard Plague doctor mask, but he usually wears it off to the side of his head, rather than on his face.
  • Cool Old Guy: Is older than the main cast by at least a decade, and is a pretty good fighter.
  • Eye Scar: Has a scar just under his left eye, which has a corneal scar.
  • Knight Errant: Is something like this, as a Wandering Plague doctor's job is to make the wasteland safe for people to travel through, so he spends very little time in towns, and goes around the wasteland helping people in need.
  • Nice Hat: Had a Plague doctor's top hat, that he gave to a young Felix when dropping him off at Fort Haven.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: When a young Felix tells him he can't (and more importantly, won't) go home because of his abusive mother, Axton is understanding of the situation, and drops him off at a safe place-Fort Haven.
  • Rugged Scar: Has a scar just under his left eye.
  • Sinister Scythe: Like other Plague doctors, he fights with a Scythe. What sets it apart from the ones the others use is that it is a two handed weapon rather than a one handed weapon, and that the blade is aligned horizontally to the shaft rather than vertically.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Downplayed with his daughter Anne; the only thing about the two of them that looks remotely similar is their hairstyle.
  • The Voiceless: Averted. Unlike regular Plague doctors, wandering Plague doctors like Axton do not have to strictly follow the "no talking in uniform" rule.

Benjamins flashback backstory characters.

Characters that appear in flashbacks as a part of Benjamin's backstory. The first two folders in this section contain unmarked spoilers for the chapter "Green".

Benjamin's previous group (contains unmarked spoilers
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/benjamins_old_group_for_tvtropes.png
"St.Patricks day!"note
Benjamin's old group, who took him in after saving him in the wasteland. They are only shown in flashback, because they all died long before the main story starts, and their story explains Benjamin's cold attitude at the beginning of WA.
  • Death by Irony: They were killed by a Giant mutant two headed lizard- The same one Olivia saved Benjamin's life from.
  • Friendly Sniper: Olivia was this, With some of her actions being, but not limited to:saving Benjamin from a giant mutant lizard even though he was a complete stranger at the time, offering to let him stay as a guest at her groups base for the night even though he was still a complete stranger, and then deciding that Benjamin (complete stranger) should join her group simply because:
    Olivia:It'll be fun!
  • Mentor Occupational Hazard: Olivia is shown in the flashbacks teaching Benjamin how to improve his aim with guns. She does not survive the attack by the Mutant Lizard.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: Olivia saves Benjamins life from a mutant lizard. The lizard later comes to their base and slaughters them all.
  • Similar Squad: All of them, in noticeable ways to some of Benjamin's current friends: Olivia was fun loving and kind like Jeff, but a little odd sometimes like Eva, Dan was silent, like Felix (when Felix's mask is on), And Brian was just a nice person in general who seemed to stay home a lot, like Anne.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Whoever kept leaving the door to their home base open in a wasteland filled with mutant monsters and various criminals. Before he goes out to hunt, Benjamin notes that they need to remember to keep the door closed, and closes it himself on his way out- but by the time he gets back, someone had opened it again, which let the Mutant Lizard walk right in.
  • To Serve Man: The Mutant lizard started to eat their remains after killing them
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Along with Too Dumb to Live above, whoever left the door to their base open.

Olivia:- and you have the approval of Dan!
Benjamin: Wh- He hasn't even said anything!

"SSSSSSSS . . ."
A giant, mutant, Two headed lizard that tries to eat Benjamin, but is killed by Olivia. . . Or so she thought.
  • Death by Irony: The true killing blow to the lizard is dealt by Benjamin-the person it was trying to eat in the first place.
  • Extra Eyes: Each head has about three eyes.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Olivia kills one of the lizards heads. The second head survives, finds Olivia, and kills her and her group-minus Benjamin, who comes home in time to find it eating their remains, and shoots the remaining head dead.
  • Multiple Head Case: Has two heads. When both were alive, they seemed to want to eat Benjamin purely out of predatory instinct, but the head that later gains dominance of the body seems to have tracked down Olivia's group to kill them as first priority, only eating their remains after slaughtering everyone in the base.
  • Not Quite Dead: Was shot in the head, but comes back later. Justified as it is a two headed giant lizard, and Olivia only took out one head.Word of God says that the surviving head gained dominance over the body.
  • Revenge: Kills Olivia, who shot one of it's heads dead.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: At the most basic level, The lizard is just a predator doing what predators do: Kill and eat prey. It just so happens that trying to eat Benjamin resulted in him befriending his savior Olivia, and learning how to survive better from her, and the lizard's killing and eating of Olivia and the other members of her group (sans Benjamin), causes trauma for Benjamin in regards to joining with, and opening up to others.
  • To Serve Man: Begins to eat the remains of Olivia's group after killing them.
