Main Party

    Madeline Karazell/Null
The protagonist of Vanishing World. A member of Zone-B and the main fighter against the Vani.
  • Action Girl: She's one of the most effective fighters against the Vani.
  • Big Damn Heroes: She, Zahalkro, and Charlotte save Target at the end of MacGuffin in the Limelight.
  • Meaningful Name: Her last name is a corruption of the word "carousel", referencing an event in her childhood where she witnessed one of her friends get abducted while she rode one.
  • Sinister Scythe: Her weapon of choice is a scythe with a Vanium blade.

    Alex Creighton/Target
A man who became the target of many scientific organizations, primarily Reversal Co., after his ability to shift between human and monster forms was discovered. After being rescued by Null, Charlotte, and Zahalkro, he becomes a member of Zone-B. He also happens to be the tether of Brayziel, though nobody in the story appears to know this yet.

Target is the primary star of MacGuffin in the Limelight.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: He faced a lot of bullying when he was young.
"The world turned a blind eye
    Even when I was screaming"
  • Power Incontinence: He has his moments where he is unable to control his transformations, usually when he's stressed.
  • MacGuffin Super-Person: He becomes sought after by organizations focused on reversing Monsterization due to his ability shift between human and monster forms. This gets deconstructed, as the poor treatment from those seeking him caused to develop immense trauma and trust issues.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: He's one of the known Weres, or humons who can shift between their human and monster forms at will. He can mostly control his transformations, at least.

    Charlotte Kingsley/STEELHAWK
The tether of Zahalkro and younger sibling of Elliot.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: With Zahalkro. They have a tendency to butt heads with one another, but they do care about each other.

    Zahalkro

Playing with Magnets

Pronounciation: Zuh-HAHL-crow
Human pronouns: He/him
Sembla: Metal
Paradigm: Beltasian
Position: Turncoat, Communications (Formerly)
Tether: Charlotte Kingsley
Brand location: Tip of tail

A metal Vani who was originally apart of the Earth Invasion Team, but defected before the events of the series for unknown reasons. Stationed alone on the moon Titan, he began to send a series of morse code messages consisting of taunts and, eventually, coordinates to his location to Zone-B, wishing to duel with their top Vani hunter. After Null defeats him, he joins Zone-B and their mission to stop his kind's destruction of Earth.

While he has no attack song, due to being an ally, he does have a theme called Playing With Magnets, a track that's associated with his spar with Null.

  • Big Damn Heroes: He and the rest of the main party have one of these moments at the end of MacGuffin in the Limelight, where they save Target from Reversal Co,'s facility.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: He has a major crush on his childhood friend Bellojey, whom regularly ignores or dismisses his advances.
  • Defeat Means Friendship: He becomes an ally to Null and the rest of Zone-B after being bested by her in combat.
  • Gentle Giant: Zig-zagged. He's over 7 feet tall, one of the nicer Vani out there, and is one of the few to outright be against the genocide mission. That doesn't mean he won't kick your ass if it's necessary, though. He's also on the shorter end of the scale compared to his fellow Vani.
  • I Shall Taunt You: His earlier interactions with Zone-B consists of taunts meant to goad them into sending Null to fight him.
  • Immune to Mind Control: Being a metal Vani, he is immune to Bellojey's hypnotizing music.
  • Magnetism Manipulation: This is how his metal magic mainly manifests.
  • Multi-Armed and Dangerous: He has four arms.
  • Nice Guy: When he's not trying to put up a tough guy persona, he proves himself as a kind soul who deeply cares about others around him.
  • Punk Rock: Zahalkro is obsessed with Punk Rock music and fashion.
  • Twice Shy: This seems to be the case with him and Bellojey. For Zahalkro's case, he simply Cannot Spit It Out.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: He and Charlotte argue a lot, him mostly being on the receiving end of things. Despite this, they do care about each other and are described as being "rather attached to the hip".

Vani

A race of aliens that originated from the Kraizenlain, a massive civilization that spanned across the edges of the universe. They were originally a peaceful species known as Kraizen, and had a rich, complex culture. However, after a catastrophic event known as the Brandshock, the Vani were mentally and physically altered into killing machines who viewed life as suffering. They serve as the main antagonists, attempting to wipe out life various planets, Earth included.

    In general
  • Achilles' Heel: Each Vani has a weak spot known as a brand. Attacking it is the best way to harm one.
  • Arch-Enemy: The Omni are this to them, being the primary species attempting to thwart their mission across the universe. Before the Brandshock, this role was fulfilled by the Kval, black, tentacled masses that preyed on the Vani.
  • Mercy Kill: This is how the Vani view their mission. As they believe life only brings suffering, they think their genocide of all life as putting others out of their misery.
  • Nigh-Invulnerability: Vani became this after the Brandshock. The only things that can harm them are weapons made out of Vanium, powerful radioactive weaponry such as nukes, and decapitation.
  • Starfish Aliens: Vani are very diverse in terms of appearance, which can lead to very bizarre-looking characters. They do have a few common features among them though, including ringed eyes colored green, blue, violet, and red in that specific order, a brand with the same colors, and black markings around the eyes. The former two weren't a thing before the Brandshock, however.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: A good majority of Vani underwent this after the Brandshock.
  • Tragic Villain: Save for a few like Luktreal, the Vani were a peaceful species who generally left other civilizations alone. It's due to the Brandshock that they have the genocidal mindset they're better known for in modern times.
  • Villainous Parental Instinct: Post-Brandshock Vani still hold protective instincts towards their relatives.

Living 13

    Alatori
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/illusion.png
"Give into impulse, redirect your prayers!"
Click here to see his true form.

Pronounciation: AH-luh-TOH-ree
Human pronouns: He/him
Sembla: Spirit
Paradigm: Beltasian
Position: Angler
Tether: Elliot Kingsley
Brand location: 4 pins on his backNote

The spirit Vani of the Earth Invasion Team. Using his tether, Elliot Kingsley, he hosts sermons to establish a cult that worships him as a God. He is prominently featured in Arbitrary Sermon.
  • A God Am I: Alatori uses his power over spirits/the spirit element and his way to 'escape' the recent danger to present himself as a God to the humans and humons who attend his shows.
Alatori: "I'm the GHOST MESSIAH; NOT A DAMN PARIAH."
  • The Bad Guy Wins: Due to Null passing out from the pain of monsterization, he manages to escape with Elliot at the end of Arbritrary Sermon.
  • Evil Puppeteer: Alatori can control the bodies of those he used the Mind and Soul Webs on as puppets.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Alatori usually keeps a bouncy, friendly demeanor on him at all times in spite of his actions. He drops the act when Null shows up to one of his sermons, however.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: While "friend" is a very strong word in this scenario, none of Alatori's teammates are particularly fond of him. This is both due to him going against the mission and his attempts to get under their skin.
  • Monster Clown: His puppet form has a clown-like aesthetic to it.
  • People Puppets: Alatori has what are known as Mind and Soul Webs, which can separate an organism's soul from their body. Upon separation, he can then control the body freely, as if it was a puppet.
  • Immortality Immorality: Even though he knows that immortality can cause great suffering, (and is probably doubly aware of that due to the Vani's culture & him being part of the mercy mission) he still grants it to his followers through removing their soul from their body, only caring about what will grant himself 'Godhood'.
  • Sinister Minister: Of a kind. Originally was going to destroy humanity like the other Vani, but while studying humans, he thought he could go higher than that. He decides to create a church and presents himelf as a God to humans.

    Baltzival
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rocky_mountains_min.png
Pronounciation:
Human pronouns: He/him
Sembla: Rock
Paradigm: Devarian
Position: Cornerer
Tether: ???
Brand location: Large spike on his back

The rock Vani of the Earth Invasion Team.

    Bellojey
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fallen_idol.png
"Let me be perfectly... hypnotically... clear."

Pronounciation: BELL-low-jay
Human pronouns: He/him
Sembla: Music
Paradigm: Beltasian
Position: Special Ops
Tether: Bahati Tavares
Brand location: Chest

The music Vani of the Earth Invasion Team, and Zahalkro's crush. While still considered part of the team, Bellojey doesn't actively participate in the Vani's mission, nor does he even stay on Earth very much. Rather, he spends most of his time on the Moon performing music, capturing the hearts and minds of those who tune in.

While he has yet to appear in the main song series, he has his own battle theme called Three and a Half Minutes to Madness.
  • Above Good and Evil: Bellojey doesn't seem to care about the vani's 'mission', but doesn't do anything to help humans and Zone-B either. All he wants to do is to continue to play and create music on the Moon. The only time he takes action is if something gets in his way or annoys him.
  • Mind-Control Music: Bellojey's music and singing have hypnotic qualities that render all but ones with strong minds and/or metal sembla beings under his control.
  • Monster Mouth: Bellojey has what's called a "Zippermouth", a very long mouth that can partially open and close itself like a zipper. His also comes with a free pair of Monstrous Mandibles.
  • Punny Name: His name is a combination of DJ, which he basically is, and the word "bellow".

    Deneko
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/factory_worker.png
"Humanity, bow before me!"

Pronounciation: Deh-NECK-oh
Human pronouns: He/him
Sembla: Electric
Paradigm: Krianian
Position: Spawner
Tether: Katrina Giyatiene
Brand location: Tail, minus the tip

The electric Vani of the Earth Invasion Team. Originally a mechanic for a fringe science team before the Brandshock, he now puts his engineering experience into attacking the city of Los Angeles, California, by creating an army of appliance-shaped robots attached to human bodies. He and his tether are the primary antagonists of Cognition Factory.
  • The Baby of the Bunch: He's the youngest of the Vani on the Earth team.
  • Brain Theft: The first portion of his attack was partially done to gather brains, which he needed to power Big Brother.
  • Cats Are Mean: He bears a huge resemblance to cats, and is just as willing to commit genocide as most of his kind.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: Deneko's main skills lie in machinery. Just in his attack alone, he produces automated mechanisms that can replace human heads and turn their bodies into murder machines, as well as his ultimate weapon...
  • Humongous Mecha: ...Big Brother, a massive, cat/dinosaur-like mech as tall as s skyscraper that Deneko pilots for the second half of his attack. On top of leveling the city, it also launches more of the appliance-shaped robots to create more "appliance-headed zombies" destroying the city.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He does care about others, despite his prickly demeanor, but gets annoyed too easily to show any affection most of the time. This is best shown with Katrina, one of the few characters he cares about. When Katrina's killed in midst of their attack, he's devastated, and tries all that he can to keep her alive.
  • Mentor Mascot: Is this to his tether, Katrina's, magical girl aesthetic.
  • The Napoleon: He's a very ill-tempered and impatient individual, and is just an inch short of 3 and a half feet tall, making him the shortest Vani on the team.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Downplayed. Deneko has a huge superiority complex who boasts about his abilities to the point of lying about some of his achievements, but he does have the skills to back up some of his claims. It takes Katrina's death to knock him down a few pegs.
  • Punny Name: His name is a combination of the Japanese words for electricity (Denki) and cat (Neko).

    Insinera
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/heating_up.png
"Though, you know, my dear boy; I'll love you forever."

Pronounciation: Ehn-SIN-eh-raw
Human Pronouns: She/her
Sembla: Fire
Paradigm: Beltasian
Position: Assassin
Tether: Benjamin "Patch" Feuer
Brand location: "Veins" connected to the "heart" on her chest

The fire Vani of the Earth Invasion Team. After adopting her orphaned tether, Benjamin "Patch" Feuer, she raises the boy to kill various organizational leaders in Germany using a device known as the Sparkthread. She primarily appears in Anguish of the Patchwork Guardian.
  • Flaying Alive: Insinera had her skin torn off by Zatakva back in pre-Brandshock days after the former accidentally cut off one of the latter's tails while they were in an arena match. Zatakva then turned her skin into a dress.
  • Mama Bear: When she thinks Null will hurt Patch upon her tracking them down, Insinera flies into an Unstoppable Rage and begins blindly attack everything, hoping to kill Null in all the chaos. She ultimately doesn't succeed, but she does burn a whole city down in the process.
Insinera: "Genocide, xenocide, whatever keeps him safe.
My heart bleeds too many sparks to be caring now."
  • Monster Is a Mommy: Insinera becomes extremely attached to her tether, Patch, since she basically raised him. When Null confronts her and tries to retrieve Patch, the thought of losing him causes her to go on a rampage to protect him.
    "Please don't hurt him,
    Please don't hurt him,
    Please don't hurt him,
    Please don't hurt him...
    DON'T YOU DARE HURT HIM."
  • My Beloved Smother: In a well-meaning effort to protect him, Insinera would cast a flame that would burn all but Patch himself around the boy, rendering him heavily isolated.
  • Parental Substitute: She's one to Benjamin/Patch.
  • Punny Name: Her name is a combination of
  • Villain Song: Anguish of the Patchwork Guardian is hers.

    Kalkori
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/korii_min.png
Glass Stained by the Damned

Pronounciation: KAHL-kor-ree
Human pronouns: She/her (Before breaking), It/its (After breaking; appointed by everyone else)
Sembla: Glass
Paradigm: Devarian
Position: Sweeper
Tether: ???
Brand location: Inner row of teeth

The glass Vani of the Earth invasion team. A kind, protective Vani who took care of orphans during the pre-Brandshock days, Kalkori almost found herself another victim of Vauluktreal. She survived, but the whole ordeal left her so traumatized that she broke. It now resides in an unknown area of Earth, attacking whatever comes into its sight.
  • Empty Shell: Like with other victims of breaking, this it what became of it.
  • "It" Is Dehumanizing: Everyone started referring to Kalkori with it/its pronouns after it broke. Justified; Vani have No Biological Sex, and simply took up human pronouns to adapt to their surroundings better. Andiven how breaking erases a Vani's personality, there essentially is no "person" in Kalkori anymore.
  • Living Weapon: Human and Vani alike deem Kalkori in its current state to be one of these. It doesn't communicate nor move unless something enters its vision, which it will then mindlessly attack.
  • Lamprey Mouth: Has an interestingly-shaped one. It starts off as a very long, vertical mouth that then segues into more rows of teeth lining the inner parts of its mouth.
  • Monster Mouth: Has a Zippermouth, like Bellojey, that retracts inward and can rotate 180 degrees. And this one comes packed with...
  • More Teeth than the Osmond Family: ...Several rows of sharp teeth! Even better: Its weak point is one of those inner teeth rows!
  • Time Master: While it can't control time itself, it can control one's perception of time. In its current state, it can make time feel slower than it actually is for its victims, killing them before their mind even processes their last moments.

    (Vau)Luktreal
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/battle_worn.png
Click here to see her as Vauluktreal.

Pronounciation: (Vow-)LUUK-tray-all
Human pronouns: She/her
Sembla: Disease
Paradigm: Devarian
Position: Spawner
Tether: Megan Luvsik
Brand location: Stomach

The disease Vani of the Earth Invasion Team. Unlike her teammates, Luktreal spent most of her time trapping, torturing, and liquefying the bodies of other Vani- 17 of her own teammates included- in a pit known as the Chasm. One day, a meltdown occurred, causing the contents of the Chasm to overflow and suck up Luktreal, turning her into a living, goopy lake of blackened flesh known as Vauluktreal.
  • The Assimilator: Likes to do this as Vauluktreal. She's successfully done this to 17-almost 18- Vani.
  • Body of Bodies: She's far from the only body making up Vauluktreal.
  • The Dreaded: While Alatori is despised by his teammates, Luktreal is feared. Likely justified, given her status as a notorious criminal who would maim others pre-Brandshock, and also given what she did to over half of the team.
  • Karmic Death: Luktreal had trapped various Vani- some of which were her own teammates- in a large pit called The Chasm, where they were tortured and liquefied, but kept alive. Then, one day, a meltdown occurred, and The Chasm overflowed, causing Luktreal to be sucked in as well, becoming part of the hivemind and experiencing exactly what she put the others through, forever. Downplayed, as she isn't quite dead.

The light Vani and current leader of the team. Previously known as Noktavia, she was originally a special ops agent, though following some undisclosed trauma and the previous leader being absorbed by Vauluktreal, she stepped up as the team's leader and changed her name to sound more intimidating.
  • Light Is Not Good: Wields light magic and is the leader of a team attempting to wipe out all life on Earth.

    Xelzerin

"Don't you dare go and crush my dreams!"

Pronounciation: ZEHL-zuh-rihn
Human pronouns: He/him
Sembla: Plant
Paradigm: Devarian
Position: Spawner
Tether: Kaylee Tagetes
Brand location: Horns

The plant Vani of Earth team. Before everything went down, he was a forager who'd harvest fruit and vegetables from an extremely dangerous agricultural forest that would then be sent to his main city. Now, however, he's residing in a remote garden located on the edges of the Florida Everglades with Kaylee Tagetes, his tether whom he abducted while she was young, the two of them creating an army of botanical abominations known as Faunaflora to wipe out southern and easterned United States. He ends up being the first Vani Null fights in the series, appearing the main antagonist of Perennial Crisis.

  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: He's around 30 feet tall, making him the second tallet of the Earth invasion team.
  • The Brute: Xelzerin is a massive Vani known for his strength and ill temper. He's also the first Vani Madeline faces off against.
  • Dumb Muscle: He's not particulary known for his smarts.
  • Gentle Giant: Though mostly averted now, he played this straight pre-Brandshock. His huge figure also came with a massive heart, extending kindness to even those many would turn a blind eye to like thieves.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: He doesn't take anyone doubting his power very well, and he'll throw a violent tantrum about it.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Despite being a loud and boisterous Vani with a massive ego, he cares a lot about Kaylee. He made sure that Kaylee grew up healthy and well-educated and is said to gush about her accomplishments when being interrogated by Zone-B.
  • Pride:His biggest flaw. He thinks he's so great and powerful, that any word doubting such will more than likely lead to him destroying you.
  • Super-Strength: He's considered this even among the notably strong Vani. It's why he was assigned to work in an extremely dangerous forest pre-Brandshock.

    Zatakva
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/on_brand.png
"Ad hominem is not attractive, dear."

Pronounciation: zah-TALK-vuh
Human pronouns: She/her
Sembla: Water
Paradigm: Beltasian
Position: Assassin
Tether: Ágata Tufão
Brand location: Stomach

The water Vani of the Earth invasion team. Due to her legs being broken by Insinera long ago, she is largely unable to fulfil her team's mission. So, she takes up residence in the cavern of a deserted island off the coast of Brazil, kidnaps her tether, Ágata's parents, and forces her to do her bidding under a promise of returning them to her once the job is done.

Her main role comes in Sleeping with the Fishes, where she's the main antagonist.

  • Establishing Character Moment: Her first appearance in Sleeping with the Fishes has her happily welcome back Ágata and talk about how much she missed her, only to immediately snap when Ágata (seemingly) asks to leave the island.
  • Fake Boobs: Her "breasts" are actually just pectorals she flexes around to make them look like boobs.
  • Faux Affably Evil: She calls others "darling" and gives many compliments, but it's ultimately all just shallow words.
  • Jerkass:She regularly belittles her tether, projects her issues onto others, and is said to discard those that no longer mean anything to her.
  • Killed Off for Real: Ágata kills her at the end of Sleeping With the Fishes, making her the first major character death in the series.

Submerged 17

    In General
The Submerged 17 refers to 17 members of the Earth invasion team who were engulfed by Vauluktreal prior to the events of the series. Although they seem dead at first glance, their bodies and minds are very well-intact, and it's been hinted that they're may be a way to save them...
  • And I Must Scream: All of them are in a state where they have no autonomy over their bodies, but they're minds are still somewhat functional and able to feel the immense pain that being apart of the lake brings them. Lwozwendo is hit with this especially hard, as she is the only one fully aware of her situation and is completely powerless to stop it.
  • Body of Bodies: They are the bodies that make up Vauluktreal.

Cacophony Within Arm's Reach
Click here to see her before her injury.

Pronounciation:
Human pronouns: She/her
Sembla: Alarm
Paradigm: Devarian
Position: Sweeper
Tether: Alex "Target" Creighton
Brand location: Scar-shaped mark on her stomach

The alarm Vani of the Earth invasion team. Due to a condition she gained at a young age, she constantly hears loud noises that overpower every other sound around her. Her solution to this was to scream to counter the noises, but that only led to her ears bleeding, and eventually her hands becoming affixed to her ears when the blood hardened. When she tried to pry them free, she instead ended up tearing her arms off her sockets, which is how she gained her rather unique appearance. It is unknown has she became apart of Vauluktreal.

While she doesn't appear in any songs thus far, she has her own battle theme called Cacophony Within Arm's Reach.
  • Cast from Hit Points: Brayziel's screaming is extremely powerful, but it also tends to cause her physical pain. It often gets painful to the point where her body, particularly her ears, starts to bleed.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: When she was young, she was caught up in the middle of a Kval raid and got struck by some Kval shrapnel, which in turn led to her getting a condition known as Alarm ESP. She's never known peace since then, and her efforts to alleviate her condition ultimately just led her hands getting stuck to ears and her arms torn off.
  • A Day in the Limelight: The comic ''The Source of Brayziel's Hearing Issue'' is entirely focused on her dark past mentioned above.
  • Death Seeker: There was time in her life pre-Brandshock where she fought in the arena as a Ferality, or Vani self-deemed insane or a freak and allowed themselves to be killed in combat. She'd later quit the act thanks to Pypilawa, however.
  • Make Me Wanna Shout: Her primary method of attack is to scream extremely loudly. Deconstructed, as it causes her extreme pain.
  • Terrible Ticking: She constantly hears loud noises in her head due to her Alarm ESP, and it's definitely taken a toll on her sanity.

  • Above Good and Evil: Much like Bellojey, Tanombri doesn't care that much about the mission. He's much more into stealing shiny objects for his personal collection than anything.
  • Tanuki: Tanombri is primarily inspired by tanukis, and is most likely where the "Tan" part of his name comes from

  • A Day in the Limelight: The comic ''Ventrava's Mindset'' is one for him. It's dedicated entirely to exploring his character and well, mindset, as well as how he was engulfed by Vauluktreal.
  • Deadpan Snarker: He tends to fall into territory whenever someone especially gets on his nerves.
  • Hospital Hottie: Ventrava is extremely attractive by Vani standards. A number of his patients would flirt with him while he's trying to work, much to his chagrin.

Tethers

    Ágata Tufão
The tether of Zatakva. After being rendered stranded on an island off the coast of Brazil, she is forced into killing specific targets by Zatakva under the promise that she'll be reunited with her parents after 1,000 kills. She's one of the main stars of Sleeping with the Fishes.
  • The Dog Bites Back: Upon learning that her parents were Dead All Along, she immediately turns her back on Zatakva and kills her.
  • Forced into Evil: She was forced into doing Zatakva's bidding, both because the Vani held her parents hostage and because she was stranded on the island with no way to escape.

    Benjamin Feuer/Patch
The tether of Insinera.
  • Trope:

    Elliot Kingsley
The tether of Alatori and older sibling of Charlotte.
  • People Puppets: Elliot is very unwilling to be Alatori's tether or helping him in any way. So, to keep them from running away & causing trouble for him, Alatori has turned them into a literal puppet, although that's not easily seen by others.

    Katrina Giyatiene
The tether of Deneko. She helps her Vani amass an army of appliance-headed zombies to destroy Los Angeles.
  • Punny Name: Her last name is a corruption of the word "Guillotine" which is what she uses to decapitate her victims before adding appliances to their heads.
  • Magical Girl: Zig-Zagged. Instead of a girl with magic powers, Katrina was a girl that came from an extremely wealthy family with parents who would throw money her way so she wouldn't bother them. She used anime, and especially the magical girl genre as a form of escapism, and that helped Deneko be able to convince her she was a hero and what they were doing was for the best.
