Autobots

The main protagonists of the series, almost all of the Autobots are humans or can assume human disguises.

    Ginrai (ジンライ jinrai
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mf_godginrai_boxart.jpg
Voiced by: Hiroshi Takemura

The protagonist of the series and the leader of the Autobts, the most powerful of the Autobot Godmasters.

  • The Ace: Is seen by both factions as the strongest of the Godmasters.
  • Adaptational Dumbass: In his bio card and Wings Universe, he is depicted as a paranoid jackass who tends to jump to conclusions.
  • Benevolent Boss: He cares deeply for his subordinates after he becomes the Autobot leader.
  • BFG: His God Cannon, which enables him to deal an enormous amount of damage to any adversary.
  • Brought Down to Normal: An interesting variant. Devil Z's destruction means the human Ginrai permanently lost his ability to transform. However, the machine part had gained its sentience with Ginrai's personality imprinted onto it, which means the Autobot Ginrai lives on (Until he's mortally injured by Deathsaurus in Victory). Funny enough, this also applies to the fully mechanical Ginrai too, as since he doesn't have a human bonded with him, he can no longer use Chokon Power.
  • The Call Knows Where You Live: He tries refusing the offer to join, but once those Master Braces are on, they can't be taken off, and the Decepticons start killing his friends.
  • Character Development: Goes from being The Drifter to being a loyal Autobot warrior and leader.
  • Determinator: One of his catchprhases is that he will not be beaten, to the point that he survived a near fatal beating from Overlord.
  • The Drifter: Was this initially, until Hydra and Buster continued to harass him.
  • Flanderization: An unfortunate victim of this trope. In the first half of the series he's a free spirited young man who grows into and accepts his role as Autobot leader. After he becomes God Ginrai, being an Autobot leader is the ONLY thing we see him doing.
  • Flat Character: He becomes this after his God Ginrai upgrade and remains that way till his mortal injury at Deathsaurus' hands. Just an unfortunate consequence of Ginrai's Flanderization into a generic military leader of the Autobots.
  • Frontline General: He always fights on the frontlines.
  • Hot-Blooded: Initially, though he grows out of it.
  • Mecha Expansion Pack: His drone companion Godbomber becomes his armor to become God Ginrai. As of the finale and 'Victory, Godbomber may have been permanently fused with him.
  • Mid-Season Upgrade: First from Ginrai, to Super Ginrai, then to God Ginrai.
    • The transtector that became Ginrai was originally built as a new body for Convoy/Optimus Prime.
  • Super Gullible: This appears to be one of Ginrai's more noticeable characteristics as the series progresses. He invites Sixknight to join the Autobots but Sixknight declined and even remarked that Ginrai shouldn't be so trusting. Ginrai later accepted Clouder into the ranks of the Autobots which was a mistake that cost the Autobots their base. Even after the betrayal, Ginrai accepted (verbally at least) a reformed Clouder's declaration that he wants to work for the Autobots. Finally Ginrai readily saves his archenemy Overlord from Devil Z just because Overlord is human like he is. Luckily for Ginrai, Clouder's reformation was genuine and Overlord did repay Ginrai's rescue by turning against Devil Z.
  • Worf Had the Flu: In Victory, he tries to shrug off the serious injuries Deathsaurus gives him because "Godmasters are immortal". He's forgetting that, since he's a fully robotic lifeform by this point, he lacks Jinchokon, and is therefore much weaker than he was before.
  • Worthy Opponent: Overlord recognizes him as this, and Ginrai has a similar recognition.

    Lightfoot (ライトフット raitofutto
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/getaway_5086.jpg

The second Autobot Godmaster and the Lieutenant Commander of the Autobots

  • Brought Down to Normal: An interesting variant. Devil Z's destruction means the human Lightfoot permanently lost his ability to transform. However, the machine part had gained its sentience with Lightfoot's personality (Or the lack of it) imprinted onto it, which means the Autobot Lightfoot lives on.
  • Flat Character: Lightfoot doesn't really have much personality to begin with, and he inexplicably eases himself into an Autobot military role rather quickly which is pretty all we see of his portrayal.
  • Honest Corporate Executive: His job before he became a Godmaster.
  • Number Two: The most Autobot Godmaster after Ginrai to get the most screentime.
  • Mildly Military: In one episode, he is called the lieutenant commander, but in every other episode he is called "mister".

    Ranger (レインジャー reinjā
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/joyride_6911.jpg
Voiced by: Hōchū Ōtsuka

The third Autobot Godmaster.

  • Brought Down to Normal: An interesting variant. Devil Z's destruction means the human Ranger permanently lost his ability to transform. However, the machine part had gained its sentience with Ranger's personality imprinted onto it, which means the Autobot Ranger lives on.
  • Eyes Always Shut: Subverted. His eyes are open sometimes.
  • Flat Character: After his debut episode, he inexplicably eases himself in an Autobot military role rather quickly - He's just there to serve as another Autobot.

    Road King (ロードキング rōdo kingu
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/slapdash_2586.jpg
Voiced by: Kaneto Shiozawa

The fourth Autobot Godmaster.

  • Brought Down to Normal: An interesting variant. Devil Z's destruction means the human Roadking permanently lost his ability to transform. However, the machine part had gained its sentience with Roadking's personality imprinted onto it, which means the Autobot Road King lives on.
  • Flat Character: After his debut episode, he inexplicably eases himself in an Autobot military role rather quickly - He's just there to serve as another Autobot.

    Doubleclouder (ダブルクラウダー daburukuraudā
Voiced by: Takeshi Kusao

    The Autobot Pretenders
Voiced by: Katsuji Mori (Metalhawk), Ryoichi Tanaka (Lander), Yuji Mikimoto (Diver), Masato Hirano (Phoenix)

A group of Autobots who chased the Decepticon Pretenders to Earth, and stayed, taking on human form. They consist of Metalhawk, Diver, Lander, and Phoenix.

  • Demoted to Extra: Metalhawk starts out as the leader. After Ginrai comes onto the scene, he and the others are shoved into the background.
  • The Generic Guy: Metalhawk stands out as the leader. Diver gets to introduce Ginrai to the series, and Lander is the comic relief one. Phoenix... is just sort of there. And even "there" is pushing it.
  • Going Native: All four of them have adapted to Earth, taking on human guise, but Lander's adapted the most. By the time the series starts, he's living the high life in New York, even occasionally going on dates.
  • Sue Donym: Metalhawk the alien robot disguises himself as Hawk the human.

    The Autobot Headmaster Juniors
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sirenart_319.jpg
Shūta Gō
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hosehead_4533.jpg
Cab
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/minerva_0.jpg
Minerva
Voiced by: Yumi Touma (Shūta Go), Hiroko Emori (Cab), Yuriko Yamamoto (Minerva)

Three human teenagers who ally with the Autobots, becoming Headmasters via their own version of Masterbraces. They are Shūta Go, Cab and Minerva.

  • Combat Medic: Minerva's role.
  • Disappeared Dad: Shūta's father is killed by the Decepticons early on in the series.
  • Henshin Hero: Unlike Western depictions of Headmasters, here the Headmaster Juniors use Masterbraces to turn into their Transformers forms like this.
  • Missing Mom: Where's Shuta's mom? The series never says.
  • Punny Name: Due to naming convetions, Shūta's transtector is called Shooter, making him Goshooter when transformed.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: Cab is prince of a small island nation, but joins the fight anyway.
  • The Smurfette Principle: Minerva is the only girl on the Autobot's side, managing to beat out Arcee to a physical toy release by several years.
  • Those Two Guys: Shūta and Cab, in stock anime fashion.

    Grand Maximus (グランドマキシマス gurando makishimasu
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/grand_maximus.jpg
Voiced by: Ikuya Sawaki

  • BFS: His weapon is a smaller version of his brother's Master Sword.
  • Palette Swap: He's a repaint of Fortress Maximus. This is also true for his version of Cog, with Onomisu being a repaint of Gasket and Koka being one of Grommet.

Decepticons

    Devil Z (デビルZ debiru zetto

  • Bad Boss: One of the very first things he does is zap Blood for sulking, before we even know he's an actual character. He gets worse when he takes over BlackZarak's body, which causes pretty much every human underling he's got to turn on him.
  • Big Bad: Once he gets a body.
  • Demonic Possession: Spends the last part of the series in a cozy BlackZarak suit.
  • Fantastic Racism: Devil Z despises humanity, and as the series goes on, his plan moves to wiping them all out.
  • God-Emperor:
  • God of Evil: Both Western and Japanese materials list him as one.
  • Made of Evil: Literally. According to 'Transformers: Legend' The Matrix of Leadership, invented by Primacron, was designed to be a receptacle for the bearer's wisdom, absorbing it and converting it into energy. When its original bearer, the Oracle, was physically destroyed, he transferred his wisdom to the Matrix and used it to travel to the planet that would later become Cybertron, emptying the Matrix in the process of becoming one with the planet. When the Quintessons sealed the Oracle in Vector Sigma and used his power to create the Transformers, they also acquired the Matrix, which became filled with their wisdom, an evil form of energy. When the Transformers rebelled, they recovered the Matrix and emptied its evil contents, forming a malicious and vengeful entity that sought revenge against the universe for being disposed of.
  • Orcus on His Throne: What with being a pulsating ball of light, there's not much he can do.
  • Red Baron: Devil Z's official title is "Supreme Leader of Darkness" (闇の総統 Yami no Sōtō).
  • Unreliable Expositor: All details given about Devil Z are given by Devil Z himself. And most of those details are pretty darn vague to begin with.

    The Decepticon Pretenders
Voiced by: Kōji Totani (Blood), Daisuke Gōri (Dauros), Masaharu Sato (Gilmer)

A trio of Decepticons, Blood, Dauros and Gilmer, who fled to ancient Earth and were sealed away by the Autobot Pretenders. They're freed by Devil Z, kicking off the series.

  • Goldfish Poop Gang: What they become by the end of the series. As dangerous as they start off as, they're no match for the Godmasters.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: Blood was sealed in a pyramid, Dauros in the Nazca Lines, and Gilmer in Atlantis.
  • Starter Villain: Initially the only Decepticons around. Then come the Headmaster Juniors, followed by Buster and Hydra.

    The Decepticon Headmaster Juniors
Voiced by: Keiichi Nanba (Wilder), Kōzō Shioya (Bullhorn), Akari Hibino (Cancer)

    Darkwings (ダークウィングス dākuwingusu
Voiced by: Yoku Shioya (Buster), Ken Yamaguchi (Hydra)

  • Combining Mecha: Their jet modes can combine to form the spacecruiser Darkwings.
  • Complexity Addiction: Hydra, Hydra, HYDRA. The guy's never happy with the idea of just killing his opponents with guns, he's always got to create an overly elaborate scheme first. But his best example of this would be his plan in Ep 21. To whit; kidnap every doctor on Earth, to make people realise how short life is, to make them lose the will to live. Somehow.
  • Cybernetics Eat Your Soul: Subverted. While Mega and Giga certainly seem to think this, it doesn't actually seem like there was much soul to begin with.
  • My Species Doth Protest Too Much: They are the only human Decepticons who willingly choose to permanently lose their human components and become fully machine.
  • Palette Swap: Their Transtectors look the same as Dreadwind and Darkwing, mostly changing the teals for reds.
  • Pet the Dog: The one saving grace Hydra and Buster have is that they deeply care for each other.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Ever since Ginrai's arrival, they gradually lose their edge among the Decepticons. Blaming their own weak human bodies for that, they approached Devil Z to transform them into fully machine. This seems to be a Broken Aesop regarding the series' recurring theme of Humans Are Special as a fully robotic Hydra and Buster proved to be capable of overwhelming Super Ginrai.
  • Villain Decay: Hydra and Buster, while still threatening, quickly become a lot less of a danger in the second half of the show when there are more Autobot Godmasters, and when Overlord and BlackZarak take active roles in the field, in stark contrast to how they were portrayed in the first half of the season as the Autobots' most dangerous enemies. This decay was arrested when they requested to become fully machine in hopes of combating Ginrai more effectively.
  • Vile Villain, Saccharine Show: Hydra and Buster in the first half of the show. In stark contrast to the comedic Headmaster Juniors and Pretenders (though they have had their fair moments of being serious threats), Hydra and Buster were portrayed as utterly serious threats. This ended in the second half of the show, where their threat level minimized in comparison to Overlord and BlackZarak.

    Overlord (オーバーロード ōbārōdo
Voiced by: Keiichi Noda (Giga and Overlord), Rihoko Yoshida (Mega)

    The Seacons (シーコンズ shīkonzu
Voiced by: Masato Hirano (Turtler)

An army of Decepticon drones shaped like sea creatures, led by Turtler, the only sentient Seacon. Despite looking identical to their American counterparts, the Masterforce Seacons are considered different characters due to their names and characterization.

  • Butt-Monkey: King Poseidon is the only Decepticon combiner in this series and is a considerable threat. After Ginrai becomes both Super and God, his threat level is practically non-existent, but only to him. Others such as Headmaster Jrs., he's still a threat to.
  • Combining Mecha: Turtler can combine with any four random Seacon drones to form King Poseidon.
  • Elite Mook: King Poseidon, essentially.
  • Made of Explodium: They explode with the slightest touch.
  • Mooks: Where they come from is unclear, but the Decepticons sure do have a lot of them. Which is good, because they go through them like toilet paper.
  • Villain Decay: King Poseidon stops being quite as threatening when Ginrai beats seven bells out of him every other day.
  • We Have Reserves: The Seacons are droves of mindless drones who show up, fire a few lasers and then explode.

    Browning (ブローニング burōningu
Voiced by: Fushigi Yamada

Other

    Sixknight (シックスナイト shikkusunaito
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sixknight_boxart.jpg
Voiced by: Show Hayami

A wandering warrior who's drawn to Earth in his quest for a fight against the most powerful beings there are.

  • Fantastic Racism: Initially looks down on humans. He's pretty surprised when it turns out Ginrai is a human, and has just kicked his butt.
  • Four Is Death: He appears in four episodes across the series. The final time ends with Devil Z exploding him with lightning.
  • No Body Left Behind: When he dies, nothing is left behind, just a smoldering crater.
  • Palette Swap: He's a repaint of Quickswitch.
