Robin Griffin

Portrayed By: Elisabeth Moss

A Sydney detective specialising in sexual assault who is visiting her remote New Zealand hometown of Laketop, agrees to investigate the pregnancy and disappearance of a local 12-year-old girl, Tui Mitcham. Her ability to empathise with Tui's circumstances is based on a horrific event during her own teenage years.

  • Broken Bird: Robin is carrying a lot of damage from her past.

Al Parker

Portrayed By: David Wenham

An old-school and well-liked detective sergeant, based in Queenstown, who also manages a café where young offenders are given a second chance.

Matt Mitcham

Portrayed By: Peter Mullan

A Scotsman and head of the Mitcham family. He is the informal leader of the town, feared by the townspeople, but with a complex inner life.

  • Abusive Parents: He doesn't treat any of his children very well at all.
  • Ax-Crazy: Matt is much less in-control than he appears to be; he's deeply unhinged and damaged, prone to bursts of violence.
  • Badass Grandpa: He might be in his later years, but he's incredibly dangerous and doesn't shy away from getting his hands dirty.

Johnno Mitcham

Portrayed By: Tom Wright

Matt's estranged youngest son, and Robin's teenage sweetheart. He recently returned to Laketop after serving eight years in Bangkwang, a Thai prison, for drug possession.

  • Old Flame: For Robin.
  • White Sheep: He's the only halfway decent member of the Mitcham family, who are either outright malicious or callous screw-ups.

Portrayed By: Holly Hunter

An androgynous Swiss spiritual leader, arriving at Paradise with a group of troubled women, who hope GJ and Laketop will help them rediscover themselves.
