Characters / The Young Turks

Go To

Cenk Uygur
  • Catch Phrase: OF COOOOUUURSSE!! Am I not merciful? Good cop, bad cop/Washington Generals vs. Harlem Globetrotters.
  • Gratuitous Foreign Language: They poke good-natured fun at all languages in general, though Cenk seems to be particularly fascinated with German words. Being of Turkish descent he slips the odd word in from that language too.
  • Spin-Off: Back when Cenk was in MSNBC, most of his interviews were moved onto TYT Interviews.
  • Troll: When asked if making Ana angry was as much fun as it seemed he said yes it is, and the segment was running into the second hour, which Ana hosts, so he was making her mad right now.

Ana Kasparian

Ben Mankiewicz

  • The Coats Are Off: During Cenk's infamous confrontation with Alex Jones during the 2016 Republican National Convention, Ben immediately takes his coat off when Cenk gets to his feet, moving to physically separate the two if necessary.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Ben is extremely deadpan, almost to his detriment as it's often difficult to tell when he's serious and when he's snarking.
  • Demoted to Extra: Due to Ana taking the co-host spot from him, Ben's gradually lost a lot of his old prominence. He's been regulated to guest host and Power Panel member, with Rick quickly taking over as host of TYT Sports.

  • Jerkass: Sometimes. Notably, Ben's views of soccer's lack of popularity in America typically reach Jerkass level. Ben has become notorious for his "Trash Soup" comment during the review of the documentary 'Waste Land'.
  • Nice Jewish Boy: Absolutely turned on its head here.
  • Number Two: During the earlier years of TYT, he was the co-host and confidant to Cenk.
  • Take That!: And a double-whammy, at that.
Ben:"I'm rooting for a German; that's how much I hate the Heat."

Michael Shure

  • Ascended Extra: Beforehand, he was just a guest host that would occasionally show up to fill-in whenever Cenk was away. After literally growing a beard, he's really started getting more prominence, whether it's twenTYTwelve, Epic Politics Man, footsoldier journalism (travels to other states to report from there) or as a guest host.
    • After substituting for Jennifer Granholm, he's now replacing her as the main host for The War Room. Pretty impressive for the guy.
  • Badass Beard: As soon as he's started growing one, he's turned into one of the more prominent members of TYT.
  • Mr. Exposition: His stint as Epic Politics Man.

Richard Eskow

Wesley Clark Jr.

  • Badass Family: Comes from one, considering that his dad was formerly one of the highest ranking soldiers in the most powerful military on Earth, and he himself was also in the military.
  • Cluster F-Bomb:: Definitely not afraid to unleash one. Played to hilarious effect in his rant against Andrew Breitbart (provoked by Breitbart suggesting that a new civil war would be a good idea because conservatives allegedly outnumber and outgun liberals): all of the profanity was bleeped out except for the "fuck you" at the very end.
  • Military Brat: He's the son of the General Wesley Clark of the United States Army.

Jayar Jackson

  • Scary Black Man: Usually not, just don't try to break into his house. Seriously, don't.

Rick Strom

Jill Pike

  • Decoy Protagonist: Somewhat; she was the main female co-host, before Ana came along, though she's gone MIA right now.
  • Jerkass: Jill was much more feisty than Ana and on some videos she would act snobbish and ramble on and on about topics without giving Cenk a chance to speak or would argue with him over the topics. Cenk even seems to be holding anger back in some of the videos with Jill. These are some examples.
  • Meganekko: She weared glasses.

Dave Koller

Tom Hanc

Misty Kingma and Jacki Bray

  • Spin-Off: Misty is now the main host for TYT Interviews.
